Die Anlage alter Gebäude am Berg und unsere große Luxury Cave Suite.

Dass die vor unserer Suite befindliche Terrasse mit 2 Deckchairs und Sonnenschirm von lautsprechenden anderen Gästen ständig belegt wurde, die neben uns ein sehr viel kleineres und günstiges Zimmer hatten und für die ein paar Meter weiter eine andere kleinere Terrasse vorgesehen war. Wir hatten bei Buchung und Bezug des Zimmers ausdrücklich die erfragte Bestätigung erhalten, dass die Terrasse zu unserer Suite gehört. Die Rezeption hat uns dann lediglich angeboten, ein anderes kleines - nicht Cave - Zimmer zu beziehen. Eine schriftliche Nachricht über unsere Enttäuschung an den Chef der Rezeption blieb unbeantwortet. Wir haben so etwas weltweit noch nie erlebt. Das Frühstück war sehr standardisiert - täglich die gleichen eingelegten Paprika und 2 Sorten Fruchtscheibchen.

Het personeel van de ontbijt service had er niet veel zin in… ze hebben een TOP terras met een uniek uitzicht maar je MOEST binnen eten in een veel te koude afgesloten ruimte. Heb gevraagd om buiten te zitten in het zonnetje maa dit kon ECHT niet en zonder enige uitleg of reden… even later waren er dan toch al mensen zelf plaats gaan nemen. Ook de kwaliteit van het eten was ondermaats.

We liked everything about this hotel. It thoroughly deserves to be part of the small leading hotels of the world community. They were incredibly accommodating and helpful from the outset, the hotel itself is stunning, the rooms are spacious, comfortable and have everything you need, the setting is out of this world, the staff are warm, friendly and hospitable. The breakfast is varied and delicious. One of my favourite hotels and already planning our return.

Le séjour est contraignant : l’utilisation d’une navette est indispensable depuis le parking surtout si on a des bagages : il faut donc appeler pour indiquer à quelle heure précise on arrive (la reception ne répond pas systématiquement il faut réitérer), puis il faut réserver le créneau horaire pour le retour (on nous a indiqué à notre arrivée que les créneaux du lendemain étaient déjà complets entre 9h30 et 11h30, sachant qu’il ne s’agit pas d’un transport privé)… idem pour le petit déjeuner : à réserver sur des créneaux d’une demie heure… le dîner au restaurant est un peu incompréhensible : tarif minimum appliqué de 100 euros par personne (250 euros pour être bien placé) alors que les plats sont annoncés à 25 €.

Tout était parfait et conforme à mes attentes. Le personnel a été particulièrement aimable notamment le monsieur de l’accueil avec qui j’ai échangé la veille de mon départ.

We had a wonderful stay at this property during our recent trip to Matera. The accommodations were absolutely lovely — our room was spotless and beautifully chic, with thoughtful design touches that made it feel both stylish and comfortable. The breakfast spread each morning was a real highlight — a delicious array of options that set us up perfectly for a day of exploring the Sassi. And the staff went above and beyond throughout our stay, warm, attentive, and genuinely excellent from check-in to check-out. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Matera — we’d stay again in a heartbeat.

I haven’t even stayed here and im having trouble coordinating with them! Its a 5 star apparently, but they claim no one can get there by car now, I asked if there’s porter service there’s no response exactly how wonder am I going to come to this hotel and my lugging my luggage, their communication is horrible!

It was our first time in Matera, I would advise more than one night to find your feet. Hotel Sant’Angelo was in the perfect location within walking distance to local sites, restaurants, shops & bars. Beautifully placed the rooms are built into the caves so they are dotted around and not in a building as such so really different and unique. We had 2 rooms and both were fabulous with beautiful views. Anyone who may have mobility issues I would recommend ground or lower floors and also same applies for small kids! All of the staff were very friendly and welcoming especially, Martina, Flavia, Nicole & Umberto. Parking is nearby at a small cost and there is a hotel shuttle which is very comfortable and efficient which will collect you from your car with your bags, it is suggested to just bring a small bag but if not concierge will help you. All in all we really enjoyed Matera & our stay at Sant’Angela. Thank you again! 😎

We had the loveliest stay at Sant'angelo. The staff were so responsive, kind and helpful from the very beginning. The service was really exceptional. The rooms and property are very special here, each room is unique and different from each other. It's a very special place. A/C worked well during the recent heat wave and the stay was very comfortable. We were only here one night but I would have loved to stay two and enjoy the property/rooms even more and explore Matera more.

Dear Sant’ Angelo team, Review for 5 night stay July 2026 First of all - great you could pre-arrange our transfer from Bari Airport, ~5:45pm direct to hotel - so late in the afternoon. The service has been terrific from the moment we stepped out of the airport, into your transfer van and then into your hotel. The reception team have been amazing, and a big thank you to Umberto for explaining Matera to us and providing us with a local map. ** Google and Apple Maps a little bit unreliable, so we are told 😀. Note… emphasis on Apple Maps being EVEN worse than Google Maps! Such wisdom from your crew. The baggage drop to our room was most helpful. I don’t know how we would have managed to bring our heavy suitcases up the stairs to our beautiful GENUINE cave room - Grotta Panoramica #room 62. Morning breakfast at the restaurant was exceptionally good. Every day we were greeted with a friendly face, explanation of the wonderful foods on offer and custom made coffee to our liking. On a number of days, we were lucky enough to get a table on the alfresco overlooking the gorge. Thank you for the unlimited wine buckets with ice delivered to our room. We really appreciated being able to chill our drinks in such warm Italian weather and sit on the outdoor patio overlooking a breathtaking view. When it finally came time to leave, checking out was a breeze. Again, thank you for organising the bag collection from our room and navigating many stairs with our heavy luggage. Your Porters seem super human in strength! The day before checkout we were able to pre-organise hotel shuttle to the Matera bus station (Don Luigi Sturzo). And lastly - we really appreciate your shuttle driver dropping us off at the bus station for our FLIX bus to Bari. We look forward to another trip to Matera in the future. Many thanks. T&L

From start to finish we had a remarkable experience at Sant’Angelo. It’s the most perfect location for exploring Matera and the rooms, especially the cave rooms are stunning. Not just a stay but an experience. The rooms were spotless and it was a proper oasis. The staff went above and beyond to ensure you have a great experience and nothing is an issue. Breakfast is a great and even better when eating it looking out over Matera in the beautiful restaurant. I cannot recommend this hotel enough. Just incredible! We stayed for our wedding anniversary and they made it extra special for us. It’s an experience that will stay with us for a long time. We hope to return in the future as our stay was just perfect! Such a nonpareil experience being in the beautiful historic Sassi of Matera. Love how SantAngelo thoughtfully respects the architecture, each room elegant whilst aligned with nature. It was a treat to stay in a real cave luxuriously, the rooms kitted out with Ortigia products that smell divine; to walk out into open spaces where one can sit at night and watch the many cats hang out by the old city walls. SantAngelo's breakfast at RegiaCorte is stunning too, I particularly loved the pastries and the selection of cheeses; the dinner service as the sun set was magical, with dishes that elevate the local cuisine. I also loved the pizza at PiuSud, stunningly charred and a flavour experience in one's mouth. The property is located very conveniently within the lower piazza zone, with plenty of food and sights literally at one's doorstep-- Rupestrian churches, views of the Gravina caves, and gelato. SantAngelo's wonderful warm team also arranged everything thoughtfully-- from porters to carry luggage up the sassi steps, a history of the place, to the ApeCalessino tour. Graziemille per tutti!

Everything just works here. They send you a pre arrival message with map directions for their car park. The transfer vehicle is waiting for you, the staff are all super friendly and all make you feel special. Our room and views were just incredible and the breakfast buffet was delicious

The only little niggle was that the pillows were both the same and both super full and firm (I like a skinny pillow!) but I managed!

Der Service war sehr freundlich. Ausflüge Restaurantbuchungen und Shuttleservice wurde alles von den netten Angestellten des Hotels gebucht. Die Rezeption und der Frühstückservice waren einfach top! Der Shuttle vom Parkplatz zum Hotel war pünktlich um mich abzuholen. Das Hotelzimmer war einwandfrei. Sauber, großzügig und hatte ein tolles Design. Das Bett war groß und hatte eine angenehme Matraze. Der Ausblick hervorragend. Die Lage des Hotels ist perfekt und nah an allem dran. Das Frühstück war groß und viele frische Lebensmittel. Leckere Burrata, Gemüse, verschiedene Kuchen und andere Leckereien.

Schönes Hotel mitten in den Sassi mit tollem Ausblick in die Schucht und auf die Felsenkirche. Frühstück war sehr reichhaltig.

Die Küche war nicht besonders gut. Aber das ist ja bekanntlich Geschmacksache ;-)

This hotel was top notch!! So cute with a beautiful view! Service was unbelievable! They arranged a shuttle to pick us up at their parking garage with our luggage, take us to their hotel and then arranged a shuttle ride back! Keep in mind you’re staying in a cave so it’s a bit dark and it was a little warm even with the AC ( but I’m always warm at night! 😂) HIGHLY RECOMMEND

This hotel is absolutely amazing. Martina and the team was very helpful, explain everything and help us with parking, what was realy great. We park car very easily and hotel transfer pick up us in couple minutes. Room was so unique, very authentic cave experience. We have absolutely amazing patio, with jasmine aroud the wall, where you can sit, relax or maybe taste local wine. View during breakfast was breathtaking. Luch in Pizzeria Piu Sud is a must- we had a best pizza ever!!! Our stay in Matera was absolutely incredible and stay in this hotel make it even better.

The property was in a spectacular location.

Our room got a bit hot and the room was billed with a ‘patio’ which made it sound like a private patio not a shared one round the corner.

The location is excellent, right in the heart of Matera and perfect for exploring the city. The staff is outstanding—very attentive, friendly, and always ready to help with anything we needed. The breakfast was delicious, with a great variety of fresh and high-quality products. The view is simply breathtaking and makes the experience even more special. Everything was spotless and very well maintained. We stayed in Room 44, and it was absolutely beautiful—spacious, comfortable, and full of charm. I highly recommend Sant'Angelo Matera and would definitely stay here again!

We wanted to stay in a Cave room. It was a great room, but it also got very hot. The bathroom too was hot and stuffy. The staff did respond to our request for a fan. I think perhaps a fan in the bathroom would be an improvement. We had great dinner on the terrace in the restaurant. Our waiter Antonio was terrific at his job, welcoming, suggested dishes and lots of fun. Thank you

The breakfast was a bit underwhelming and at times chaotic.

A slightly high price for a room with a view that wasn't as panoramic as described (the room was a little set back). Not to mention the ongoing construction (our visit in may 2026) on the church opposite (not Sant'Angello's fault) : A crane spoils part of the magic view, and the construction work generates noise and smokes. But also : - The drilling work near the restaurant during breakfast time; - A bathroom with lingering odors the first day and a wobbly shower tray; - We had to go inside to claim for a coffee on the terrace for breakfast, otherwise no one offers. These are minor details, admittedly, but ones that would warrant higher standards for a night costing nearly €600. On the other hand, the room was very spacious, pleasantly decorated, in a sober and moderne style including a very large alcove bed.

We had a wonderful stay at Sant Angelo in Matera! True luxury in a unique cave hotel. Martina, Flavia, Nicole, and Umberto were wonderful hosts! They were very accommodating and welcoming, answering all of our questions with patience and care. The breakfast was excellent as well. We loved our stay and would highly recommend to others.

I went to Matera not knowing what to expect. What I took away, will forever stay with me. The atmosphere has an unabridged spirit and connection to a far distant yet current day. The hotel was remarkable and the staff, always prepared to assist in making a memorable visit for their patrons. The room that I stayed in, built from the cave dwellings, was gorgeous. I will return there. The people are true treasure. Kind, attentive, aware and appreciative of their home and history, I found my time there a special journey. I recommend anyone to stay and experience the area for their own renewal and growth.

The Hilton Sant’Angelo SLH is out of this world. There is nowhere like it. Its location in the third oldest city in the world - Sasso Caveoso Matera - with its 10,000 year old caves is spectacular. Each room in the hotel is unique. The views are amazing and there is so much to explore. To top it all off, the staff are both elegant and professional.

Staying in the caves was a very cool experience and the rooms were very nice and clean. Check in experience was great and the parking situation was clear and easy. Breakfast was underwhelming and getting back to the car was difficult as you need to take a shuttle to parking and they had a hard time coordinating between the driver and front desk for a pickup before 10:30am. Overall very good stay for 1 night.

Very cool hotel- but be prepared for unusual room configurations and less than perfect temperature control. The lovely staff, amazing food and unforgettable atmosphere are well worth any non standard quirks of the room

San Angelo is a wonderful luxury hotel. It gives you a sense of the geographic region of Madera and the historic perspective as well. Matera beingan ancient city developed over many centuries it’s preserved very well. The staff and restaurant, amenities an experiences at the hotel who offer a luxury and we would highly recommend a stay at San Angelo. The location is excellent, and the views are amazing.

I stayed at Sant'Angelo to celebrate my birthday, and I couldn't have made a better choice. This place is magical, not to mention my room, that was equipped with all comforts and prepared in all details. The whole staff was so attentive and careful and responded to my requests and needs with precision and courtesy. What I also loved about the hotel were the dining facilities Regia Corte and Più Sud that offer delicious specialties of the local kitchen with an impeccable service. It is definitely a place that you cannot miss for the world!

We had the most wonderful stay, this place felt like living in another timeline, our luxurious cave was wonderful to fit my whole family. Service by Flavia in front desk was great. Breaktaking views of Matera. Our room was lovely and large. The breakfasts were excellent. When we arrived, we were first greeted at the front desk by Martina. A lovely young woman wanting to learn the hospitality industry. She was We also met a very industrious young person, Alessandro. We first saw him sweeping leaves from the steps to the restaurant. Later, he carried our luggage down all those steps to the van. In every encounter he was smiling. Definitely an asset for this hotel.very clear and providing us information about this lovely hotel.

We stayed for 7 nights. Room and view = amazing (clean, comfortable, convenient). Get room 55-i !! Staff = amazing...attentive, professional, and understanding. Restaurant = food, selection, accommodation, ambiance, view...all amazing. keep that Greek Yogurt stocked (...Valentina and team...thank you for all your support!). Laundry = only drawback here. **Management...please find another solution.

Sant Angelo hotel was the perfect place to stay for our two nights in Matera. The room was spacious, spotless and incredibly comfortable. The location is fantastic to explore Matera. The only disappointment is the church in front of the hotel is currently covered in scaffolding so the view was not as good as expected. Despite this the hotel is worth it. Martina was extremely helpful and spoke wonderful English. Incredible stay - thank you.

Had a lovely stay at hotel among the historic sassi caves. An experience i absolutely couldn’t miss when in Matera! The staff of the hotel were attentive and professional, and the breakfast service was excellent. Authentic Italian breakfast was included. The room was clean, cozy and set in a real cave! With a private entrance and terrace, it’s perfect if you’re looking for a calm, private stay. I really enjoyed it!

Very helpful and friendly staff. Martina and her colleges were always two steps ahead in making sure we (a family of four) had a pleasant stay. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the location amazing. Just right by the cliff with beautiful views of the caves on the opposite side of the canyon but also right in midst of the old town. For Bond lovers this is the location to be.

There was nothing we did not like.

Magical in every way! From the ease of booking, excellent correspondence with Giorgio (who also organized the best room), the excitement of checkin with Martina, Flavia, Umberto and Nicole - so engaging and helpful, to Nerus who is seriously the strongest guy I’ve met (and who managed our bags up all those stairs)! Sant Angelo was a gorgeous place to stay right in the heart of Matera - five star on every level with super luxurious beds, stunning views and whisper quiet. Plus personally shown to our room which was fabulous. Definitely worth staying two nights - with the first night dining at Piu Sud (wonderful) and then the second night at Fuoco di vino (sublime food and service). Massive shoutout to Biagio for engagement and passion.

We had a really nice stay at this cave hotel in the sassi of Matera! Me and my husband booked a room here at the beginning of April and the area, views and ambience here is something else. The rooms are located in real historic caves, they are beautifully styled inside, so it actually both authentic and cozy. The room had everything we needed, from water and little snacks to bathrobes and toiletries. There is also a thermostat to regulate comfort temperature, that I think it’s important when you stay in the historical area. Breakfast was included, it’s served in a restaurant and has a nice choice of sweet and sour dishes. The whole area and ambience is just so calm and peaceful, we really enjoyed it and left feeling fully rested😌

I have not written a Trip Advisor review for a few years. Our stay at Sant’Angelo was such a great experience that I decided to do one. There is significant novelty to staying in a room in a cave, but that was for us the best way to experience Matera. Our stay at Sant’Angelo started with the Hotel communicating with us a few days in advance of our stay, providing us with the location of the car park. All we had to do was to send them our license plate number and the gate at the car park opened automatically for us. We had given the Hotel the time of our arrival and there was a driver there waiting to drive us to the Hotel. Doesn’t get easier than that. Upon arrival we were treated with a level of professionalism and personal care that we don’t always see. The staff were very attentive to our needs. On our first night we had dinner at Regia Corte the restaurant of the Hotel where we had such an excellent meal we went back again the next night. We met Paolo the manager of the Restaurant and we were treated exceptionally well by both Paolo as well as his staff. We basically watched a clinic on how to make guests comfortable by looking after their every need. The checkout and return to the car park was the same as when we arrived. We were right into the car park by the driver and assisted with our bags. I cannot highly enough recommend this Hotel our experience here was memorable.

Rapporto qualità prezzo. Il bagno è separato solo da una porta scorrevole trasparente. La devono fare opaca. C’è solo un armadio con dentro cinque grucce di numero. E non si chiude e non sta aperto. C’è troppa poca luce in camera. Non ci si vede niente. Nemmeno con la luce artificiale. La ventilazione fa un rumore infernale. Una mattina su tre si sono dimenticati di farci la camera.

ALERT - Hotel Broken Into During Stay - Update II Providing a response here to address the reply from the hotel management for the Trip Advisor community considering booking a stay at this hotel: Management’s reply, in short, is that what we have described (in earlier posts below) is false and we are attempting to steal from the hotel - I have provided 2 photos below that captures our experience that night - The first, shows the location tracker of the AirTag that was in my bag that was no where we had been before, once we realized it was missing at around 9:30PM local time (once Theresa told the hotel the bag had an AirTag in it, it stopped moving). The second is a picture that was grabbed as I was taking photos of surveillance cameras in the area where we found the AirTag, it captures both the hotel manager himself (Biagio, who replied previously) out with us to track it down (we thought it may still be in the bag that could be with the thieves in a cafe or in the trunk of a car), as well as my wife who had injured her foot earlier in the trip (unrelated) and had a cane. Clearly, we would have preferred to not be out there at 10pm on our vacation. Following flagging down police, who took a record of the incident and came back with us to the hotel to investigate. The next day, I went with Biagio to the police station to file a report (at 8:30AM for over an hour, again, just anything else would have been great). We re-arranged travel plans, adjusted our schedules, etc. to deal with this to the fullest extent. To suggest that this was a sham on our part is completely ridiculous. Like most prospective guests reading this review, we enjoy traveling and staying at nice hotels, etc. We were traveling with our standard things, including some relatively valuable items, nothing life changing, and we had them inside our room when we left for a tour with a company that the hotel had arranged. There’s a foundational trust you have when traveling, that a quality hotel will ensure you and your belongings are kept safe on the property. Unfortunately, that was not the case in this instance (our posts below describe that there may have been some degree of coordination between the hotel and the thieves, wether intentionally or unintentionally, they seemed to know when we left and when we would return). To the trip advisor community, we are in legal proceedings with the hotel and we will keep you all aware of the outcome. We have never experienced anything like this before. If nothing else, we are likely to be similarly-minded travelers, you have seen hotel management’s response to this situation and, at a minimum, should consider this relative to other options in the area.

Un soggiorno davvero indimenticabile al Sant’Angelo. La struttura è incastonata in uno degli angoli più suggestivi dei Sassi e l’atmosfera che si respira è unica: silenzio, panorama mozzafiato e un fascino autentico impossibile da descrivere a parole. La camera era spaziosa, pulita con grande cura e arredata con uno stile che rispetta l’identità del luogo senza rinunciare al comfort moderno. Dormire qui è come fare un tuffo nella storia, ma con tutte le comodità di un hotel di alto livello. Il personale è stato impeccabile: accogliente, professionale e sempre disponibile per qualsiasi esigenza o informazione sulla città. La colazione, servita in un ambiente panoramico, offre prodotti di qualità che valorizzano il territorio. Una scelta perfetta per chi vuole vivere Matera nel modo più autentico e suggestivo possibile. Tornerò sicuramente.

ALERT - Hotel Room Broken Into During Stay - Update Providing an update here to my earlier post. The hotel has made no effort to remedy the situation and has not responded to our communications. I’ve seen hotel management do more for guests over slight inconveniences, the lack of response here has been disappointing. We have engaged legal counsel who filed a claim with the hotel. We will keep this community informed of the situation.

ALERT - Hotel Room Broken Into During Stay Took a 90 minute tour arranged by the hotel, came back to find we were robbed. Our room was well up a mountain (a several minute winding walk up hill), not right on the street or any easy opportunity. We have suspicions that this was targeted and there was some degree of coordination between the hotel and the tour company (Ape Tour Matera, our driver’s name was Paolo). There was access to the balcony through a common area on our level of the hotel. The thieves rifled through our things, took an expensive watch, bag, pair of shoes and other small items. The bag had an airtag in it and we tracked it to another location (that we had never been to) where it was dropped on the street, where the police and hotel manager (Biagio, who was helpful) came out to meet me to investigate. We filed a police report, the hotel has video surveillance but has not been willing to acknowledge it. Despite the theft being quite obvious, the hotel owner has not been willing to rectify this in any meaningful way (should that change, this review will be adjusted). It’s a shame. The city of Matera is absolutely stunning and the food/restaurants are amazing.

Took a 90 minute tour booked by the hotel, came back to find we were robbed. Safety is the absolute bare minimum. If you don’t even have that at a 5 star hotel, why bother. Our room was well up a mountain (easily a 7 minute winding, challenging trek straight up hill), not right on the street or any easy mark/crime of opportunity. It was clearly an inside job- either the hotel staff or they vendor they work with saw their chance while we were scheduled to be away for 90 minutes. Either way, filed a police report, will contact the embassy and will ensure everyone is warned about this hotel and tour provider (Ape Tour Matera- Paolo).

Location unica e soprattutto camere speciali! Se si vuole vivere un’esperienza deluxe nei sassi materani è l’ideale e credo la migliore nel suo genere. Camere curate nei minimi dettagli, reception molto attenta e veloce nelle richieste, navetta perfetta.

Onestamente mi aspettavo una colazione più ricca e diversificata. Mi ha colpito l’assenza do tisane e un livello di assistenza degli operatori meno efficiente rispetto alla reception. Solo per questo non ho dato 10!

The location is amazing! right in the heart of Matera with beautiful views. The breakfast area is wonderful with a lovely atmosphere.

There was some mold in the shower, and the shower itself was small and not very new.
