Location, facilities and staff were welcoming and polite

Nice quiet and comfortable room and outstanding breakfast.
I love staying here when I’m passing through Newbury , it’s a lovely old hotel in a super location with ample parking . Staff are always very friendly and helpful.
Fantastic location great atmosphere pleasant staff more than adequate parking for a centre of town hotel
The size of the room, we all slept comfortably.
Got a bit warm at night but the hotel did supply fans. So was fine. You cannot leave windows open if you are a light sleeper.
2nd time here, great location in the town as a base, lovely hotel and stay overall and will return again.
Shower over bath may need to be changed soon as water was splashing out when in use and quite a lot leaked out onto the floor that needed to be wiped up.
The breakfast was very good staff so helpful and friendly, could have done with a stronger fan in the room it was not very powerful it was very warm ,love the hotel and staff and I must say the gardeners are fab and keeping the outside spotless and a pleasure to sit in the garden ,we will always keep coming back thank you so much xx

Great location

Location, clean room.
Rear entrance from car park not very inviting on arrival as it is dirty & used as a smoking area which you have to walk through on arrival! Room large shower head not secured , fell off when turned on . Not useable & dangerous . Room 104. Very noisy with heavy traffic as facing out to main road.
Friendly, helpful staff. Very nice breakfast buffet.
Staff super friendly, The garden was nice and close to the facilities
The room was tiny, so I had to hop along a box just to get in and out of bed, The room needs a rework,. The shower leaked badly and the bathroom fan sounded like it was about to take off,
Otima Localização. Quarto excelente. Funcionários atenciosos! Super limpo!
Location
Run down. Quite dirty rooms and bathroom
Location was excellent
Breakfast was like warm and worst I have had for a long time
We unfortunately broke down at the hotel and the hotel let us park for two weeks while we boarded our cruise ship. We called the AA on our return, who got the car going. We can not thank the hotel enough for letting us leave our car there, and will definitely book again when we cruise again next year.
The food was very good and at a reasonable price. The staff were very helpful in letting us leave our broken car for two weeks. Room was good for our needs with everything we needed.
It’s location
Steps up into the bathroom Slip risk getting out of the shower, needed a rubber mat in the bath , and it was difficult stepping out of the bath as the side was very high. Breakfast not the best, cold fried eggs! And the waiter never smiled!
Very conveniently located, decent breakfast, very spacious rooms
It was very hot, with only a small fan in each room. The building was old and carpeted with a lot of stairs and no elevator
Location Parking on site
Needs a little TLC in places
Convenient and secure parking for motorbikes
Bathroom tired
Location and friendly staff
Noisy, road outside was quite noisey.
Breakfast was good value, and we appreciated that the room was quiet, and had a fan. Hot on the 2nd floor! shower and bath were great water pressure.
mattress was quite old and pillows were uncomfortable
Helpful staff and good location with free parking.
No A/c and only one fan rooms very hot and many stairs. Rooms bed an update but good size bathrooms
Dry dull needed refurbished
No lifts as no accessible for disabled
Position and parking
A little bit worn
Handy location for town, decent value for money. Staff were friendly and welcoming
Room was a bit grubby (stains on the walls and carpet, frayed curtains, mouldy bathroom blind), but the sheets were clean. Room was very hot, they did provide a fan but it was an uncomfortable night.
Location and helpful staff
None
Newbury seems to be an excellent base for the surrounding area and the Chequers is within walking distance of the town centre. Food at the hotel was good with an excellent choice for breakfast and the staff were very friendly and helpful
Great location very friendly staff

Extremely disappointing stay and poor customer service I have stayed at the Chequers Hotel numerous times over the years and have always recommended it as part of our annual trip. Sadly, this stay was extremely disappointing. Room 115 was wholly unsuitable for two adults. The bed was so small and positioned against the wall that my partner was unable to sleep in it and ended up sleeping on the floor, waking in considerable discomfort. The room was also excessively hot and stuffy, and the fan provided made little difference. Neither of us had a proper night's sleep, which significantly affected our weekend. After complaining, we were moved to another room, which had a large stain on the bedsheet that was urine, mould in the ceiling corners and peeling paint. I also found the original room extremely distressing and suffered panic attacks as a result. I complained to the hotel and requested a full refund. Rather than addressing the cleanliness, maintenance and sleeping issues, their response focused on the fact that we had booked a “Cozy Double”. We were offered just £20 compensation, which was completely inadequate. Despite sending further emails asking them to reconsider, the hotel refused to respond any further. Our party consisted of 10 people, and as a longstanding returning customer, I found the way this matter was handled particularly disappointing. I have photographs documenting the issues. Having shown the receptionist the pictures she advised I could claim back a refund via email and she was shocked to see the state of our room. Having since done this they are refusing to reply. After years of staying at and recommending this hotel, this experience has completely changed my opinion. I would not recommend the Chequers Hotel and would not stay here again, it is certainly nowhere near 4 stars.. 2 at very best.
Location and free parking
Room in need of update (204) electrical work required, not all plugs worked, toilet needs repair, kept filling or not filling
Very handy for Newbury. Room was clean and comfortable.
TV was not tuned in so couldn’t watch anything. Basin plug did not seal so water drained out.
A well positioned, well kept hotel in a very good location, with nice friendly staff.
The room / hallways looked a bit old / weathered, probably in need of a good renovation / refurb, but this hotel delivers in every other way and does the job nicely.
Location and free parking
Very tired and needs decorating, poor cleaning. Poor staff training. Didn’t reply to emails.

Convenient, clean and well kept
Price
Not great to be told when checking in that a DJ will be playing until late at night. Room had a weird smell, like a bag of cheesy crisps. General condition of the room was poor
Location Parking
Clean hotel in a central location
Un hotel correcto con personal amable. Desayuno bueno
No tiene ascensor y es un poco caro
If was kind for staff to put a floor standing fan in the room
The person managing the breakfast table/food could have been more 'enthusiastic'!
The room was spacious and very clean. The breakfast was a buffet self service style and was adequate for our stay. The Hotel is well positioned for the town and the parking was free once you logged your reg number. The staff were all very friendly.
The hot water from the sink in our room was luke warm with a poor flow rate and the water did not stay in the sink. The Hotel decor and carpets are tired and must be due an upgrade especially the carpets. For the price we paid though was reasonable.
Room comfy everything you need. Iron and ironing board
Room at front so noisy and very hot. Breakfast poor.
l friendly staff
lots of queues to start with only one receptionist and she was doing a phone booking whihc we all had to listen to. parking is a tight squeeze and some cars took 2 spaces. no lift and very higgledy rooms- got lost. main areas were tired but room was good enough. Beakfast was already run out at 915 on sun am so a long wait and it came in bits not altogether but they did do a scrambled egg on request.

Breakfast was good value for money. Staff very friendly and helpful. Close to the high street for shops restaurants and pub. We stayed to attend the wool show at the race course which was do doable 45 minute walk. Throughly enjoyed the weekend.
The bath room sink took a while to empty.
All the staff were very friendly, and the breakfast was lovely
Ein gepflegtes Haus in zentraler Lage mit kostenlosen Parkplätzen.
Das Frühstücksbufett könnte man noch etwas liebevoller und abwechslungsreicher gestalten.
The location was amazing and the reception staff amazing Other staff hmmmm
Dangerous when having a shower in the bath as it was to small and you are having a fear of falling water pressure was very poor and bed uncomfortable
Old charm
Parking was rubbish - there was an event on and I was forced to park in the nearby parking station.
The hotel is right in the middle of Newbury, ideally located for all that we needed. The hotel is a mixture of buildings, put together over time, some older than others, has some character for sure.
The challenge for the property is the accessibility for the majority of the rooms, however there are ground floor rooms. It looked like the bar / public areas had recently had some renovation, but the rooms were tired, yet functional. Bedroom was clean, but needed some repairs.
Good location for centre of town
We had to pay £12.90 for parking at a different location as parking at hotel was full. Extremely frustrating.
Comfortable beds
Two floor up and no lift. On a noisey busy street.
Das Hotel ist zwar renoviert aber das schon wahrscheinlich vor 20 Jahren, Zimmer und Badezimmer sehr groß, sehr nette Personal. Frühstück ok
The hotel was in a perfect location, in the middle of Newbury and in easy walking distance of the local shops. Parking was excellent with its own car park. The staff were great, helpful and friendly. Everything was spotless and the towells were beautifully soft.
With the building being old, the internal decor and fabric of the hotel was a bit worse for wear. The bathroom was tatty and the woodwork was disintegrating in places. Being elderly, stepping out of the bath for a shower was rather risky. The bed was rather hard.
Location free parking
Comfortable rooms good and good food
Lack of lift
We had stayed at this hotel for the last four years, it's convenient for are onward treval. It's very friendly hotel breakfast is great too.
I don't think you could of done anything we were very happy to stay there.
Great location near centre, good value on a clean seat serviced room.
Parking a bit cramped
Good location & value for money
Radiator in the bathroom would not turn off, was in the midst of the heatwave and easily became very uncomfortable. The bathroom was not the cleanest.
It was a regular place I stayed, and I got consistency which was important to me. The receptionist are always friendly, and always on hand to help!
I think the rooms probably need a few upgrades and made a bit more modern, other than that they are ok.
Een ruime kamer, schoon en aardig personeel. Er werd 's ochtends speciaal een glutenvrij ontbijt voor mij gemaakt.
Very good bed and friendly helpful staff
Depressing dining room And a difficult climb up stairs to bedroom
We chose this hotel for its location and free parking, it is located a 10 minute walk from the main shopping area and several good restaurants. We stayed here mainly due to its close proximity to Highclere.
The Wi-Fi was intermittent, our room was on the 2nd floor, there is no lift and the fire doors are awkward and heavy to open. Our room had no air conditioning just a few fans which didn’t do very much.
Convenient location, comfortable room.
It's a little tired, notably in the reception area where the lighting is poor and the carpet could do with replacing. Recetion should be bright and inviting but unfortunately it lacks a welcoming ambience.
Location Great
Bit noisy Near Main Street
Bedrooms and hotel were adequate but tired looking. Staff were friendly and helpful
Price Breakfast was lacking certain products that staff told us had not been delivered yet.
Excellent location and parking. Staff pleasant and friendly and room comfortable.
A little untidy in parts but it is an old hotel.
Staff were friendly, but not always able to help. Location and availability of on site parking.
Pillows were lumpy and uncomfortable, which the staff stated could not be replaced. Had to move room twice in a 3 night stay due to first room stinking of cigarette smoke. Fittings & Fixtures functional but in need of replacement/upgrade, whole hotel feels 'tired'.
Big private car park, central location. Friendly staff, v accommodating to us and helpful. Bedroom great
We had a huge family room for 3 of us. The room was bright but this also meant hot with the sun (we were in a heatwave). There were 2 fans available but no air con.
We stayed in room 309 on Tues 11 August 2026. There was some thumping and banging around 1700 and we went out for a meal and when we came back it was fairly quiet. The next morning the banging and crashing started at 0600 and was reverberating through the walls and floor. I went and spoke to the night porter at reception and ha came out with me but there was no noise. However as soon as I went back to the room it started again. Looking on Google maps showed that the business backing onto the Annex is a gym and the racket comes from weights bouncing off the floor. I spoke to the receptionist on checking out and she admitted that complaints had been made before about the noise in those rooms. We were on the first floor and the rooms underneath have old wooden doors that stick and need to be slammed when anyone goes in or out. This noise also contributed to make it a very unpleasant stay !
Good location close to town centre with car parking on site as well as bar and restaurant. Clean and comfortable accommodation and staff were very obliging and friendly.
There was no air conditioning in the rooms which were extremely warm overnignt. Whilst they provided fans this really didn’t make much difference at all but it was an extra hot few days during our stay and in cooler weather this wouldn’t be an issue.
Fantastic stay. Great rooms, great bar and the staff are amazing.
Absolutely nothing.
It was clean
Didnt think it judtified cost paid
Room 301 - Awful! We opted for the 'courtyard' due to mobility issues and there not being a lift. Bathroom needs a serious clean and regrout. Photos attached. How they can sell a room with the bathroom in the state? We were woken at 6am as its adjacent to a gym, so we could hear dumbells etc being dropped and music. We also could hear this later in the afternoon. This was reported to reception but due to lack of rooms and our reasons for choosing the 'courtyard ' (we didn't realise was the car park until we arrived) we couldn't move. The room was extremely hot, 1 not effective fan was issued, our friends were next door in 302 and they had the same issue with the heat. Due to being in the car park you cant have the windows open for security reasons. The noise was reported to reception and they gave us the email for the company. 2 emails have been sent, no reply received. The hotel needs a referb as very tired looking and pretty basic. Only good thing...location.
Incredibly noisy from road - unable to remain at the hotel as impossible to sleep with windows shut to help muffle the noise as rooms have no air conditioning (in itself not a criticism)
Very friendly staff Comfortable room
Staff very helpful
Our toilet didn't flush no maintenance as weekend but waited /Bar man helpt No atmosphere to encourage eating there Bigger plates needed for breakfast Toasters were rubbish so slow
Central position; good car parking; clean .
Room on the second floor; lots of stairs and hard to push heavy doors between floors; room along a maze of corridors as far away from reception as it could be. Hotel a bit tired; very little choice if we wanted a continental breakfast; we were told the bakery delivery hadn’t arrived at 9am and just some slices of ham and cheese on display.
Nice located hotel to the town Bed was a bit hard ,personal preference but yes made it uncomfortable to sleep But clean enough and great value for money stay
It was local for everything
It needs a few new carpets and tired in places but didn’t take anything from stat
The food was excellent
The lack of bedside electricity ports
Great value, excellent location
Proximity to the town with free parking.
Breakfast could be improved
The room was well equipped with everything you need . Staff were polite and it was in a great location
Breakfast was okay. Some items not replaced and the coffee could have been of higher quality.
Good location friendly staff. Arrived late in evening, so didn't use all the hotel amenities. Free parking good.
Hotel is a little dated. Bedroom okay. Was really hot weather, no a/c and fan for room was useless. Had to get another fan at 2am from receptionist
The hotel is ideally placed to access the town centre and its shops and restaurants etc. The lovely canal and park are only 5 minutes walk away. It has 1 EV charging station but very slow. The reception staff were very friendly and plenty of free parking.
Although the breakfast is free with the accommodation it fell well short of expectations. Chef not being able to cook a poached egg. We stayed for 4 nights and no sausages available one day, no fruit other than oranges and apples. No croissant available one morning.
Grande suite pour la chambre familiale Joli lieu, ville tranquille. Jolie terrasse. Parking. Grande salle de bain
Peu de choix au petit déjeuner et essentiellement du salé.
Location was great
The hotel was tired, decor needs refresh, the light in bathroom was faulty, plug sockets sparked, the floor is uneven with a strange slope. Ceiling cracked with peeling paint.
The location was great to walk into the town , rooms were a good size All the staff were really lovely and the breakfast was very good, would definitely stay here again x
No fridge in room and beds not clipped together but we did that so no a problem really .
Staff were very friendly and helpful. We had a very large room in a separate block alongside the car park, with plenty of storage space. During our last night there was a power cut, so no electric available in the room in the morning. In the main hotel some of the lights were out, but the breakfast area was lit and the staff did really well to ensure we had breakfast. Juice, cereals and pastries were laid out for us to help ourselves and if you wanted toast, or a cooked breakfast you placed an order with the server and the main kitchen would cook it for you. The staff did well under the stressful circumstances. Hotel was in a central location in the town, with the high street a short walk away.
The tiles in the bathroom had become stained and looked dirty even though we could see the bathroom was clean. Some of the woodwork needs a little attention. A hook beside the shower entrance would be useful to hang your towel on. As we were on the ground floor, we felt we couldn't leave the main window open, for security reasons and it was a very warm night (we did leave the small upper window open). There was a tower fan provided thankfully, though the oscillate function did not work. A light above the mirror over the desk would be handy to see better when applying your make up.
Nothing about the hotel was appealing
Hotel was utterly filthy and the room smelt of sick. Toilet waste black and the shower hadn't been wiped in an age and was disgusting. Suggest the cleaning regime was to change the poor quality bobbling bedding for more bedding of the same quality.. learn from my mistake. Don't do it to yourself. I arrived at 8.30pm and left at 10 with no recompense as the receptionist wasn't able to give a refund.. just incompetent and dirty.
