We had a wonderful stay, everyone was very nice and welcoming
Nice and clean. Staff were attentive.

Friendly staff Good food
Monday morning. Limited staff availability.
Great staff actually one member of staff. He worked very hard and was so polite and helpful. The restaurant and bar were very clean and surprisingly beautifully presented. The room was cosy. Although the shower head was broken, there was no milk and the mattress had a huge dip in the middle.
The staff was wonderful. The breakfasts were delicious. Our room overlooked the main road and was very noisy (we were prepared for that from previous reviews). Because there is no AC we tried to sleep with the windows open but it was impossible. Our room was over the bar and the music started 6:45-7am in the morning and went until 11pm each night. It pounded up through the floor. I got to know the play list. Another problem was that we only had a duvet during our warm August stay. We asked for a light weight blanket and were told there wasn't one available.
Too noisy and our room was too hot.
It was a perfect little bank holiday weekend escape. The room was as quirky as the photos, with a cute little dog bed and treats. The human food served in the bar and restaurant was absolutely delicious and the staff were very friendly and attentive. They were very welcoming towards my dog too. I will definitely be going back!
It was comfortable, clean and cosy
Food good
Wifi not good
Nice environment friendly staff
Room was a bit small and the shower door did not keep the water from the bathroom floor.
The staff were very pleasant and helpful. Hotel was beautiful and decor was lovely. Food in restaurant was great. Would definitely return.
Nothing
The restaurant and food were pretty good.
The initial room we got was very noisy due to the proximity to the road so we move to a quieter room which the staff facilitated with no problems. The second room had a few design issues: the carpet would get wet as there was no lip to stop water seeping from the shower. Another part of the carpet was badly stained and the duvet didn’t have a cover. Fresh was given each day which was a nice touch but no mini fridge in the room to store it and bizarrely a decanter with dribbles of port left in the room. That said the mattress was very comfortable. WiFi quite patchy also
Decor is beautiful and facilities are top quality.
I liked everything :)
Friendly & helpful staff
Floor & skirting board dusty
Was very nice comfortable bed
Bathroom was a bit small, and the carpet needs cleaning or replacing. You still hear road noise from the room occasionally.
Decor very tasteful , comfortable bed.
Top floor attic rooms too hot despite a fan, expensive food menu.£95 for 2 mains and the cheapest bottle of white wine and very little selection of vegetables, just green beans for a roast dinner!
The room was very clean and the shower was a lovely walk in rain shower which we both enjoyed.
We stayed in the Mallard room, as my husband entered the building, he banged his head hard on the ceiling above the stairs. There is no sign as you enter, so it would be helpful if staff point this out when bringing guests to this part of the hotel. My husband is just shy of 6ft tall. I was fine and am 5ft 7. Unfortunately he also banged his head on leaving our room the following day. It seems that the doorway is particularly lower than the average door. Completely understandable in an old building, but wanted to highlight this for other tall guests!
Style & quality great.
room very cramped & close to the road.
Lovely property all around. The main building as well the room. We particularly enjoyed the professional staff and the food. It was the perfect spot for a stop over night on our way to Cirencester. We would go back if we lived in the UK. 10/10
One tiny thing that we noticed is the fact that the shower (great as it was) would leave water all over the bathroom floor. A design fault and not a staff problem.
The Mallard room was nice & quiet & had 2 table fans which was great as it helped to cool down the room! We had breakfast & dinner at the restaurant & food was delicious! The staff were extremely helpful and nice as well!

Beautiful accommodation, staff were very helpful. Location was great, close to newbury, we walked into town. Very quaint, very English.
Food was only ok
Great service and location with amazing breakfast
Couls have had a fridge in the room
Fint sted. God mad og imødekommende personale. Flot indrettet både pub restaurant og værelse. Gennemført stil.
Der var rent og pænt på værelse 22. Gulvtæppet kunne dog godt tåle at blive renset.
Bed very comfortable and spacious. Coffee machine good even though we didn't use it. Fresh milk for tea is a nice touch. Night Manager was very helpful. Breakfast up to 11.00 was very welcome. Decadent in letter request a review misspelt.
Pity only one tea bag per person in room. Shower was lukewarm in morning. WIFI reception virtually non-existent. Decadent in letter request a review misspelt.
Location was good for Highclere Castle, golf courses and Newbury Racecourse . The room was comfortable with some lovely extras like sloe gin , fresh milk and Nespresso coffee . The staff are very friendly and helpful and we would certainly make a return visit .
Room 16 , I didn’t like the bathroom . The shower wasn’t very hot and an impractical wet room set up . The sliding door and automatic light was annoying as well (the light comes on at night flooding the room with light)
It was very cute, cozy and comfortable. A lovely place.
The only thing was the shower head spurted out water in all directions. Otherwise it would have been a perfect stay.
This is a great place to stay . The staff were wonderful . The atmosphere was lovely and the food was great .we would definitely stay here again .
We had a lovely room with all the usual comforts and the gin was a lovely touch . However due to the recent heat waves the building was very warm and our room was a little too warm despite the use of two fans . Nonetheless the bed was very comfortable and the shower was great so all in all we were very happy .
Such a beautiful room we had such a shame we weren’t there longer. We thought this room could have done with an armchair it had a chair but not too comfy too read. Also loved the tea & coffee things but could have done with a few biscuits
Mattress was a bit hard maybe mattress topper can be used. Very well cooked high quality well presented food but a little expensive & lack of choice especially for vegetarian/vegan fussy eater
Lovely staff member greeted us on arrival. Rooms were comfortable and stylish. Food was good and hotel in a good location.
Its not a didn't like more because im not used to but this hotel is on a busy road so it did wake me several times in the night. Can't be helped unfortunately.
Evening meal
The bedroom was too hot Pillows were disgusting .
Very nice and polite staff. Rooms are pretty and tidy.
Staff where very friendly and helpful Food was fantastic
Most of staff friendly and helpful, particularly with handling my luggage. Room was fine except for bedding, see below.
No-one on reception when I arrived. Another guest went to find someone to check me in. Weather was very warm and the duvet - which was dirty -had been taken off and left on floor in a plastic bag, Maybe the intention was to replace it but hadn't been done. Dining room service at dinner was OK but at breakfast was very poor. 45mins to deliver breakfast?? Manager who appeared to be in charge unable to offer an explanation or apology.
Era accogliente , qualità/ prezzo, il ristorante perfetto come pure la colazione
The building was picturesque and well maintained. Everything was clean and tidy. The staff were so friendly and accommodating. The food was delicious both for breakfast and evening meals.

Nicely decorated rooms . Good shower
Very noisy. The cottages are right by the road and the gardens. Loud noise until 12am - not ideal. Need to clear the garden earlier to allow people to sleep.
Staff great, Max was so helpfull
Noisy road but we requested alternative room and that wat perfect, thank you Max
evening meal excellent , hawkestone lager good
breakfast poor , no toast just sourdough too hard to eat , choice of 2 cereal only, poor,
Friendly staff
Very small room , close to car park
We were in the stables, had a king room which was compact but did have everything we needed, food was good had Dinner on both nights, breakfast good too, friendly staff
It was hot so needed window open the noise from traffic v loud, unfortunately first night the Inn had power cut about 19.30 luckily we were in outbuilding and had power but at 2300 v loud alarm and flashing light came on as main power in Inn came back, then again at 23.30, and bizarrely at 0445 a bright light came on by door in the room was on for about 15 minutes, so not a good nights sleep, and as window was open woken at 0700 by collection of bottles, also was charged £4.70 plus 50p for an orange and lemonade drink which we thought was excessive we did ask why it was that price .
Staff friendly. Large TV. Excellent shower . Good breakfast. Nice short walk to Donnington Castle from the hotel.
There was dust on the lamp base and table and cobwebs in the windows and in all the windows going up the stairs to the room. Previous occupants must have been smoking as stale smoke smell in the room. Meals were expensive in the restaurant for the quantity. Tea and coffee facilities limited in amounts provided.
Room 1 is at the front of the original building---it faces the A4 main road---and there is no double glazing due to the windows being older sash windows. Therefore on a warm evening and the windows open----it was noisy. That said the room was very comfortable, clean and spacious. Bar, restaurant and the outside covered area were all very comfortable and the food was excellent---especially the fresh fruit at breakfast. All staff were superb, and could not have been more helpful in trying to make our stay a time to remember.
See comment on Room 1 windows. Many other rooms in the newer buildings had soundproofing, just not in the original Edwardian building------Part of the character of the place (I suppose)
Breakfast was fantastic
Evening meal was just ok step into room wanted a clean
Such friendly staff. Had the Sunday roast which was amazing. Everything was clean and tidy, nice linen and toiletries.
Was a bit hot during the heat of summer. Fans provided helped though.
Staff were amazing last minute booking could not of been more impressed with the staff, service , food everything
Limited WiFi as business traveller
This inn was the perfect place for us when coming to see a show at the nearby Watermill theatre, and was an excellent base for visiting surrounding villages and towns. The staff were professional, friendly and helpful. The amount of thought that had gone into all the details of the rooms was amazing, especially given the price range. Breakfast was fantastic with lots of choice, and we had some excellent evening meals and drinks in the garden as well. Will go back if in the area!
Nothing
Very good customer service, Max checked us in and made us feel very welcome as soon as we arrived, he showed us to our room and checked we’re happy and continued to be great for the two days we were there and he was the same with everyone. He should be commended for the level of service he provided to make everyone stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. We had a Sunday dinner in the restaurant and the food was excellent and my husband is very fussy but he said the lamb was the best he had ever had so compliments to the chef as well. Breakfast choices were top notch too and all included. The bed was so very comfortable excellent shower. We had a lovely stay here ample parking great location for highclere castle.
Nothing
Location was ideal as close to our family
No air conditioning or even adequate ventilation in the upstairs rooms. No housekeeping over a two night stay. Stained carpet and carpet in stairwell and common area hadn’t been cleaned for weeks. I think the Hare & Hounds needs a rethink. Standards have slipped since the initial renovation when it felt as though it was a superior quality ‘inn’. Having said that, the staff were largely lovely and suffering perhaps from a lack of investment and ‘care’ from head office. Will not stay there again and will reconsider our options even for dinner. Such a shame…..
Location was great, easy access to surrounding areas of interest. We attended the Battle proms at Highclere Castle which was a short drive away.
Our room was not serviced over the 2 nights we stayed. We only had milk on one morning for tea, the second morning none was delivered. The coffee machine was well worn and would not work. We could not leave the window open for air at night as the shutters were trapped by the window handle. An error with somebody else’s drinks being merged onto our food & drinks bill.
Beautifully presented in a lovely setting. Plenty of spaces in the bar area and restaurant which provided for privacy . Staff were all very friendly and helpful.
Our room was on the front so a little noisy from traffic (wanted to have the window open as it was so hot but couldn’t do this all the time because of traffic noise). A few more hooks in the bathroom would be good to hang all the towels. Bath robes are provided on request but it was a shame they weren’t offered when checking in as I forgot to ask.
Alles beviel
Clean and stylish
Lovely rooms. Really friendly and attentive staff
Everything was great. No issues.
Excellent service the staff work extremely hard and nothing was too much trouble
The bedroom were very hot but they did have fans in them
Individual rooms, ambience, staff very good. Stayed many times as it’s so good.
The rooms are hot as no air conditioning, however they do provide fans.
Interesting decor
Lacked back up to . Left a note at the desk, no reply
Nice to have a room located away from the main pub.

The Hare and Hounds is absolutely outstanding! From the comfort of the bed to the engagement by the staff, our whole stay was fantastic.
Good food, good staff and location
The room was uncomfortably hot and the fans provided did not help
The design of it
Food very expensive
Large car park Fan in room...weather was hot!!
Getting across the road outside!!
A great location £10 taxi to town the breakfast was outstanding very clean ,it was extremely hot so asked for extra fan one given staff great people. Will definitely visit again .
No complaints
Breakfast excellent. Rooms lovely and clean.Bed very comfortable Staff friendly and helpfull
The rooms are beautiful and tastefully decorated. The food is amazing! The manager and staff are delightful. Highly recommend.
Nothing.
Beautiful restaurant and bar, delicious food but a little pricey
Location
Unclean. Towels were dirty. The coffee machine was useless and not working. There was hair in the sink.
Garden and breakfast
Traffic noise overnight was awful
Great hotel and staff especially Max, he couldn’t do enough for us
Nothing
Beautiful room and setting. Staff were absolutely fantastic
No milk in our room and only 3 sugars cubes. Had to call reception to get more. The breakfast was disappointing. One hash brown the size of a 50p piece!
Décoration des chambres, le resto
Dinner _ I chose 2 starters which were tray served to my room, Tasty soup but I had to ask for bread & a nice Scotch Egg
Slow service Luncheon. I had scallops and bacon. The bacon over powered the delicate taste of the scallops and was very, very salty Slow service Main course was really just 2 sausages on a large bun. Boring and tasteless not the lamb I was expecting Delicious ice creams
Chambre, petit déjeuner, resto , bar
Ontbijt
Geplekte handdoeken.
Always a great stay lovely breakfast cosy rooms
Staff are very helpful and friendly. (Max is a gem) Lovely room and facilities making it feel luxurious. Individual accommodation with own private entrance providing freedom.
Can’t think of a single negative
Easy check in . Bar and restaurant staff friendly lovely meal
Small room very cramped as king bed in there. Constant road traffic noise all night
Lovely gastro-pub with rooms. The evening meal - risotto with greens followed by toffee ice cream was the best I enjoyed on my holiday. Breakfast was also good and my dog enjoyed his sausage! The front of house and restaurant staff were all lovely and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. A good stopover between Devon and North Norfolk and I would book again. The effective fan and removal of the duvet was a sensible move on the part of management and it meant that I got a decent night sleep on a hot evening. Thank you.
The bedroom was tiny. I’m not sure how a couple would manage in it - even my dog and I were tripping over each other due to the lack of floor space. The cost for my dog was steep at £25.00. Although they kindly supplied a dog bed, bowl and a handful of treats the bed was tiny and too small for my cocker spaniel but to be honest the only size that would fit in that room!! The staff were all dog friendly though.
Our room was lovely and clean.
The mattress (for us) was way too hard. We booked two nights but just stayed the one as we hardly slept and we ached….soft mattresses are our personal preference.
The inn was lovely , excellent staff very helpful, food was deliscious
Room was bery small,
All excellent
Nothing
The pub served good food and the concierge was available 24/7
- Severely stained and gross carpet, we were afraid to take our shoes off. - unacceptable layers of dust and filth all over the room, on the sills, blinds, and I don’t think that bathroom extractor fan has ever been cleaned. - cobwebs in the corners like it’s not been dusted, a spider literally came down on its string near my face when I was lying on the bed. - the room was 28’C when the outside temperature was 17, and the windows cannot be opened more than a couple of cm making it impossible to cool down making it a literal hot box torture chamber. - the room is on the busy main road so even after 11pm the noise was high. - the bed did not even have a under sheet so we had to take out the duvet and use the cover, but ultimately this was still too much with the room being close to 30’C. - we requested a room change to one that could have windows that opened but were told you were fully booked, probably why you decided to put us in a room that should not be inhabited in this weather. - Due to all of this we packed up and left, driving home 2 hours in the middle of the night tired and extremely disappointed having loved our previous stay here in May 2024. As you know it is extremely dangerous to drive tired but we felt we had no choice as this room was not an acceptable option.

Lovely property with really nice food and a good selection of drinks. Quality food.
The staff were friendly and welcoming. The breakfast was an absolute delight and truly the highlight of our stay - fresh, well-prepared, and thoroughly enjoyable.
Unfortunately, the downsides outweighed the positives during our stay. The carpet in the room had significant staining, and although we were informed on the morning we were due to checkout that it was due to be replaced, this did impact our experience. While there were some lovely pieces of furniture in the suite, the sofa was extremely uncomfortable—it felt as though there was little to no padding, making it difficult to relax. The room was also very stuffy. Although two fans were provided, one was largely ineffective, and it took a long time to cool the room to a comfortable temperature. The complimentary refreshments felt limited for the price and star rating. The provision consisted of still water (though it was unclear whether this was tap or filtered), four coffee pods—two of which were decaffeinated—and only two tea bags. A small addition such as biscuits would have been expected. We were also concerned about some safety aspects of the room layout. The step down into the wet room (WC/shower) and the slight step up into the bedroom both presented potential slip/trip hazards. This is something that should ideally be highlighted at the point of booking.
everything was lovely, accomadation fabulous, breakfast great and staff so attentive
nothing, very enjoyable stay
Comfortable, clean room, great staff and good food.
best location best staff
it don’t have the aircon and room was not properly cleaned
The staff were very helpful and pleasant. The food was excellent. Parking was good. The bed and bed linen were good quality. Water provided, coffee machine and fan all good.
The converted stable room was very small and hot even though there was a fan in the room. The bathroom was extremely close to the top of the bed. Little room to put stuff down. I'd say it was ideal for one person for one night in Autumn or Spring.
Verder alles top!
Very very noisy There was a party and people were gathered near to the bedrooms Went on quite late Bathroom door was glass which seemed odd
Lovely pub close to nature trails. The staff is really nice and attentive and the food was good.
The King room we booked was very small. The bathroom was lacking privacy as basically part of the room. But still really good value for money.
Sehr guter Service. Gute Atmosphäre. Schön arrangierte Anlage. Alles sehr gelungen. Reizende Ausstattung. Gut draußen zu sitzen.
Unterkunft nicht gut zu belüften.
