Provider-sourced guest reviews.
Location was ideal for us, 1/2 way between our holiday and our house.
Great location for attending our friends wedding plus lovely food for the wedding breakfast and breakfast the next morning was great too. Room (40) very nice and bed comfy.
Our friends stayed in a bensmoor cottage and it was very run down and needed refurbishment with stained wallpaper and carpets. Room also smelled of dogs.
Very pleasant location. Staff always happy and assist with any issues.
Nothing
Location rooms
No food after 8.30pm nothing offered when arriving late no room service Breakfast ok orange juice warm
Breakfast basic buffet but nice.
Meal at dinner was poor value and mistakes were made but rectified. Drinks at the bar were expensive
Large clean room, restaurant was lovely too
Room 21 is right next to the kitchen fans so a droning noise till 11pm couldn't open window because of the noise, also couldn't put air con on as it was really noisy and rattled a lot, also the bathroom smelt very damp, mentioned this on check out and was told if u stay again don't except room 21,
Convenient location. Extensive parking. Courteous staff throughout. Beautiful room and facilities. Well maintained and decorated throughout. Good bar range. Extensive and vibrant lounge seating. Tasty breakfast with good choices. Hotel runs an attentive but relaxed atmosphere. Very enjoyable in every way
The room was beautiful! Had most things you need a handy little area to keep things and not have a messy room if you have lots with you. Hair dryer iron The salon staff were fantastic all so nice and helpful! Views are lovely as long as your on the front of the hotel the back looks onto a motorway but we didn’t hear it much tbh.
The bed was very hard The pillows where terrible The travel cot mattress was a a waist of time my daughter slept with us as it was basically just a wooden board The food was poor we have just been to a 2 day wedding so had 2 meals and 2 breakfasts the the pastry’s and things like fruit yogurts and juice were fine but as for the actual hot breakfast that wasn’t very good quality
Location
Staff were reluctant to serve us tap water
Without exception, every member of staff we interacted with was friendly & helpful. Special shout out to the girls in Spoilt Spa who fitted me in for a pedicure at short notice. It’s the pedicure I’ve ever had and my feet felt very soft afterwards. The restaurant food was excellent and good value too. Our room was spacious, and well equipped.
Staff and room was excellent, our evening meal was exceptional
Only disappointing thing was breakfast, we know it might have been busy but being a self service breakfast there was a shortage of plates at toast station, also when we arrived which was about 9 there was a shortage of eggs, sausages in fact everything that there was supposed to be for a breakfast.
What a lovely hotel! I booked this last minute when travelling south and despite being there a short time, it was a great experience. Lovely room and bathroom, very polite and engaging staff, and super breakfast, particularly as I can't take gluten and hadn't put this on the reservation. The chef did a bespoke plate, which I really appreciated. The breakfast waiting team were very helpful too, and super friendly. The bedroom was spacious and nicely decorated. This time I was travelling solo but I'll definitely return with my husband in the future. The location for the M6 or A74(M) is super too.
Nothing for me.
Lovely hotel, good quality rooms and furnishings etc, comfortable beds, great shower and bathroom
Breakfast was a bit of a let down, lots of staff not really doing much, had to do everything yourself and even had to go and ask for cutlery and plenty of food but just above average not great
Location
Staff reluctant to serve water at the dinner table
Having stayed at this property before, I knew what to expect. The hotel is nice and modern, clean and tidy, with ample parking just away from the main road. The restaurant is nice, and the food selection for dinner and breakfast is good. Room was very comfortable and spacious again, with all the amenities. Will definitely stay again.
Some rather noisy children in the dining room/restaurant area were a bit disruptive for myself and other guests eating, but minor issue really.
I love the hotel food really good and very clean
Nothing
Room smelled of dogs, had to keep windows wide open. Not enough cutlery. Mould around bath. Room was very dark
Great location and lovely rooms
Staff could have been a bit more friendly but they were busy with a wedding
The food was fantastic and the most comfortable bed and clean rooms
Air-conditioning was not working, so had to open the windows, but the motorway traffic was noise, but it won't stop us from going back
The cottages were very spacious and comfortable. Great location for exploring either Scotland or England. There are a block of 6 cottages, each with its own parking space so no worries about parking. The kitchen has most of what you need for cooking your meals.
There wasn't much to not like but the cold water tap in kitchen was always luke warm and the cigarette bin on the outside wall which we didn't use, was full and wasn't emptied during our stay. Also, the addition of netflix to the tv would be a great option.
Excellent room, well laid out with the kids bunks tucked around the corner with their own TV. Nicely decorated and good facilities like an ironing board, armchair, full length mirror etc The meal in the hotel was delicious
Unfortunately we were at the back of the hotel in very close proximity to the motorway and the noise was horrendous! Also we were above maybe a kitchen and every 10 mins a noisy vent came on. I had to sleep with a pillow over my head to drown out the noise. Such a shame as it was a lovely hotel
Cottage was clean and well presented. The food at Smiths is very good as is the service.
Nil
Light bright clean and good food
Everything was good
Cleanliness and size
Lacking kitchen basics, no dishwasher tablets and lacking basics like can opener or bottle opener.. Also very hot!!
The room was very comfortable and clean although a bit cold, only way to heat it was a small electric fan heater which didn't really have much impact.
The public toilets on the ground floor were very smelly.
Comfortable and clean. Breakfast was fantastic
I had a lovely stay in the hotel, rooms are amazing, staff are very professional, Special thank you to Roberta for making my stay special and taking the time to chat with both myself but my elderly parents.
Everything. Friendly helpful staff, great location for a stop over when travelling north, rooms, bed and bedding very comfortable, we enjoyed our dinner and excellent breakfast. Thank you.
Lift was slow, accessible room was good except beds a bit close to the wall on one side and the only sink was very low - the shower and toilet grab rails were excellent for our very elderly parents but the sink was positioned for wheel chair users only so was a bit low. Not all people who need assistance are wheelchair users.
We returned to Smith's for our 10th anniversary having got married at Gretna Green and stayed at Smiths before. The staff are always friendly and welcoming, the room was comfortable and had everything we needed. The bed was super comfy and huge! Breakfast was included and had a great selection of items from pastries, cereals, toast, and hot items. A range of teas and coffees as well. We booked dinner as well which again was great. We had two mains, a side, two desserts and drinks all for under £70. I had the fish and chips and my husband had the steak which was cooked perfectly. The hotel is located a matter of minutes from the famous blacksmith's area so no need to drive once you've parked in the hotel - which has ample parking as well. There isn't anything we'd change about the hotel or our stay and look forward to staying there again.
Nothing. Wouldn't change a thing.
Rooms are huge
Bed is uncomfortable
We attended for a wedding. The layout of the family room was great with the bathroom between the adults and child spaces. The TV in the children’s room was also a welcome The room was clean and tidy. The noise from outside though was absolutely horrendous. The hotel is next to a busy road and you could hear every car. The room was above the large air con fans and bins which added to the noise. The air conditioning unit in the room sounded like a jet engine when it was on and even when it was off you could not close it to the outside noise as it was on the external wall. Avoid room 17
Brilliant hotel for weddings or just a base to see Dumfries and Galloway staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful food in restaurant very good
Limited menu same each day and on occasion staff slow to respond between courses
The room was really spacious, clean and comfortable, the bathroom was immaculate and provided high quality soap, body wash, conditioner and hand cream. The breakfast was buffet style and had everything you could want both hot and cold. An added bonus of provision of a teapot for tea rather than the usual teabag and mug.
I cant think of any negative aspect of the hotel, there was some road noise from the Motorway but we were aware of the proximity when booking. If we stay again we would request a room facing away from the motorway.
Superb location. Opposite the Blacksmiths . One parking space is allocated per room. Massive vaulted room with full facilities. You can go into Blacksmiths museum for free if your staying at Smiths hotel and receive 10% off any shop purchases. We were not told this and paid 2 Adult entries into the museum. Staff are friendly and helpful.. It is a magical place to stay and attend a wedding.
Sadly large cobwebs, and an uncomfortable bed, with springs jutting out LHS, which catch your legs when getting out. And not informing us about guest benefits are only small details missed by staff but enough to reduce from 5 to 4☆.
Easy to locate and good for a nights break whilst driving from north of Scotland to England
Nothing
Lovely hotel, stayed for 2 nights, rooms clean, comfortable with tea/ coffee making facilities, hair dryer, iron etc. good breakfast buffet. My only criticism is that the wine for our table ( pre booked meal with drinks package) was served as we had almost finished our main course!
The service the atmosphere and also our group had a drama and the way the hotel dealt with the aftermath was excellent
We stayed in one of the cottage’s. Absolutely perfect, a great space.
Nothing
Location
Could of been cleaner
Friendly approachable staff
Air con not working in some rooms and balcony door broken. Pricey for alcohol
Perfect stop over on our journey. Easy access from motorway, room and bathroom excellent decor. Walk in shower excellent. Bed super comfy. Warm welcome and nice ambience. Couldn’t fault it
Nothing I can think as a negative.
Really good value for money. Clean, comfortable rooms, nothing to much trouble for the staff.
likes the bed room clean, tidy, staff were amazing
great location for a wedding and shopping
The bed was comfortable. That'd it.
The cottage was dirty on arrival with visible lumps of dust. Dirty towels and urine around the toilet and over the side of the bath panel. Holes in the carpets with mouse bait boxes on show, also no working air conditioning. The bin area had ehat I hope was tea stains and the bun was dirty on top. I requested to speak yo a manager or housekeeper multiple times, and they were never on duty. Sent an email while there with no response and left my number. Again, I've heard nothing back. Very poor service, rude staff bar a young man seving in the bar and a receptionist called Tom.
House keeping staff where lovely
Drinks are very expensive and the breakfast food is slow on topping up the items also alot of tea cups was dirty
We had a fantastic break , after a torrid few months , great hotel, great staff , clean comfortable and a fantastic shower !
We ate in restaurant 2 nights , first night excellent. Second night my wife and I were really looking forward to a scotch steak , how disappointed were we ! We both couldn’t eat at least a third of the steak, it was inedible. I spoke to the staff. Very apologetic. We will be returning but not eating the steak !
location was fantastic. Room was lovely and spacious
Had to take a ten minute walk to a nearby hotel for breakfast which was not acceptable. Only found this out by reading a sign on the reception desk on our arrival. Nothing on the website and no notification prior to arriving.
Staff are nice to be fair. Had to move hotels. Had blood spots on my bedding. Staff said might be wine. I don’t care not chancing it. Might have aids hiv. Then ask me to drive to sister hotel I said I can’t drive had a beer. I alcohol in Scotland. But one of staff did dive me to other hotel.
We were greeted by the most pleasant lady who was ever so helpful which made our stay extremely pleasant & enjoyable thank you Flo for all your help & useful information about the place you made our stay worth while looking forward to seeing you again Mrs slinger.
We've just spent 2 nights here as guests of a wedding couple. Room 29 was very comfortable and had all we needed for the say and wedding prep (iron/board). Room only has a shower but it was very good having the drencher option as well as hand held. The air con isn't, cooled ventilation at best so in this weather the room is quite warm. The window opens onto the car park with A74(M) beyond so it can be quite noisy. The bar service was very good as was service and food for the reception. The room didn't get serviced for the second night. I forgot to mention this when checking out and didn't report it at 23:00 when we retired as I doubted there were any chambermaids/ housekeeping staff on duty at that time.
Location was ideal, helpful staff, clean & bright hotel & the food in the restaurant was excellent.
Small negative was the noise from doors along the corridor during the night, disturbed sleep.
We had our wedding reception in one of the private dining areas at Smiths Hotel. The bar staff went above and beyond! Nothing was too much hassle for them and they were soo attentive! Special shout out to Riley, Bradley, Ciaran, Alfie, Dixie and Rosie - these guys were amazing and we are so grateful for everything they did for us! They definitely deserve a pay rise 😉
It’s a great location, not just for weddings but for Greta village. Loads of things to do, and an excellent shop nearby. The rooms are large and beautifully furnished, the on-site bar and brassiere has a varied menu and was good value for money. All the staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good and had a various amount of choices.

The cottage was prefect
Extremely warm lol
Lovely hotel, comfortable beds and clean modern rooms. Staff were very friendly
No EV charger
Ambience
Traffic noise
A stop over whilst travelling through the UK. We stayed in the cottages attached to the hotel, kids loved having their own room, open plan kitchen and living room was spacious, 2 bathrooms:walk in shower and bath options- perfect for families. We had an à la carts dinner in the restaurant- delicious food and generous portions in the kids menu. All staff were lovely and friendly. Wish we could have stayed for longer
Nothing!
We've just spent 2 nights here as part of a package getting married across at the Blacksmiths. Such a fabulous experience throughout our stay - the wedding planners being on the ball given the number of other weddings going on, fabulous food with the afternoon tea & 3 course meal after our ceremony plus plenty of choice for breakfast. We stayed in the Ash Suite which was huge and had a comfy bed. Thank you so much for being part of our wedding - we certainly had no issues & chose wisely. To any couples thinking about it, get it booked!
Great location. Very relaxing atmosphere.Lovely breakfast.
Room was far too warm, had to keep the fan on.
Le confort, les équipements, le côté atypique du cottage, le calme
Rien, tout était parfait
we stayed in a amazing 2 bed cottage. it had everything we needed. breakfast in the main hotel very good. the Gretna green experience a short walk was also well worth visiting.
绝对有品质的酒店,我们特别幸运的临时赶上了前往这家酒店,值得专程前往,早餐也特别丰盛!服务也优质!

Room, location
Everything was excellent, superb location a few minutes' walk to Gretna Green forge etc. Staff were welcoming and friendly. The room was just the right temperature given the very hot weather.
Conveniently located, well kept, modern and clean.
Breakfast was good although would have liked more selection of fruit
A hook in the bathroom to hang dressing gown or clothes on. A set of drawers would have been nice for smaller articles of clothing.
Rooms were big. Bathroom was lovely. Air con in room was great as it was a hot weekend.
Liked it all
Nice large bed with a very comfortable firm mattress.
1st night the room was very noisy, it sounded like pipes banging or possibly an air conditioning motor or pump. It started at 2 in the morning and went on till we got up.
Location.
Dining room was closed . No dinner breakfast or room service had to walk to nearby hotel .
The room was clean and comfortable. It is a good location if you wish to visit the Gretna Green Blacksmiths Shop.
On arrival we were informed that the hotel restaurant would not be open for dinner. This was disappointing.
The hotel was set in a great location, surrounded by lovely well kept garden. The rooms and the hotel were very clean and spacious the staff were brilliant and the food excellent, would recommend and stay there again
Nothing
Food at dinner and breakfast was very good as was service. Room was lovely especially shower room.
Home from home in cottage 1
There were no EV chargers.
We got married in the Coach House and had our function at Smiths. We had 28 guests and had the most amazing stay!!! We where treated like royalty and cant fault Smiths whatsoever (if we where to be not picky maybe some extra electrical plugs in the Mackie room) lol. Big shoutout to Alf, he was fantastic!!! Thanks so much!
Breakfast was low quality products ie sausage and fatty bacon
Evening meal……Prawn cocktail was Shrimp the same as being served to the wedding party . The price of Haddock and Chips was over £17 for this price I would expect fresh fish not a piece of frozen fish wich was dry and tasteless
the room was very good and the shower excellent, need;s new gass strut so the hall door closes quitley going to rooms no2 breckfast could do with better type sauages other wise very good all round, the meal for the wedding dinner was excellent you staff were polit and attentive, complements to your head chief and his team, very enjoyable stay thank you rosemare and stephen bone

Staff were fantastic, nothing to big or small they will help
Fantastic service. Callum is a great bloke! 👌🏽
The service was fantastic and everyone was so friendly! Calum specifically was so helpful, overall, sensational!
We had a fantastic weekend at smiths, the hotel manager Calum was fantastic, catered to all of our needs and made us feel extremely welcome, highly recommend smiths hotel any issues grab calum
Great staff, food was very good, parking was easy, nice hotel
Bed was too hard for us but we find most hotel beds are
Close to the venue we were attending a function at
Cottages we booked we unavailable due to water issue which meant we had to stay in the hotel instead. My daughter has food intolerances and we booked the cottages so we could store - prepare food for her. The rooms didn't even have fridges in them so this made eating difficult.
Very clean and organised
A couple of staff were quite abrupt to our wedding party. But this was also due to lack of communication between departments.
Excellent stay with extremely attentive and helpful staff at every point. Particularly Callum, bar manager.

Location is perfect. Rooms are large and very clean. The modem bathroom was beautiful.
I think the breakfast could be improved. Hot Items. Quality of the bacon and sausage was really good the way that they are presented in casserole pots lacked care. When I visited the hot food counter the beans and mushrooms had to be scrapped up and there were just 2 old fried eggs. No one around to ask about fresh eggs or eggs cooked another way. Bread section. Just sliced bread. That’s it. No crusty bread or bread rolls available. Very basic. Good selection of cereals and juice. Again the fruit salad bowls were empty and the yoghurt selection poor so I did not have any. I was not late down. I arrived for breakfast at 8:50 I think that more care is required. It felt like a works canteen not. 4 star hotel dining room.
Stunning hotel
Liked it all
Lovely comfortable room
Disappointed that the cottage we booked for our anniversary wasn't available
Room size and modern facilities
Sat nav and google didn't pick up hotel location from the postcode
Location
No hot water
We stayed in a 1 bedroom cottage. The location was great for us stopping over. Flo on reception was lovely. Breakfast was nice.
I had to request sheets & pillowcases to make the sofa bedding up to be used, I wouldn’t expect to have to do this and we couldn’t use the bedding without sheets. We found a lot of rubbish under the sofa bed and the bin in the bathroom had not been emptied. The freezer was unusable and needed defrosted. This was very disappointing and made me question the cleanliness of the rest of the cottage. I brought this up with reception and handed them the items we found.
Modern & clean, great location.
Location good for wedding at the blacksmiths shop . Great shower/ bathroom. Huge comfortable bed . Plenty of complimentary tea/ coffee .
The road noise meant i didn’t sleep well .
We were in the cottage annexe, really spacious and comfortable, superbly presented
Impressed with everything
Very modern
Was noisy as the road was next to our room
Excellent breakfast, choice varied and offered both English and continental options. The disabled bathroom facilities were some of the best I’ve ever experienced in a hotel anywhere. The staff were helpful and friendly
The height of the bed, could get in without assistance as I have mobility issues. Would have liked a second easy chair for my husband to relax in rather than a desk chair.
Breakfast was good
Evening menu limited and grossly overpriced
Excellent hotel will definitely stay again
