Close to local race course and main routes to other attractions
No food availability upon arriving at 3 pm should have bar snacks ie rolls or sandwiches and light food then wouldn't have gone to the next venue to eat out .hence the Rose & Crown lost a possibility of more income.
Great location and peaceful
A bit dear
The room was spacious with plenty of shelf space. The bed was really comfortable with a beautiful view. The bathroom was large with a good shower and we really liked the soft light that came on automatically when we used the toilet in the night. The breakfast was good too.
I am not sure what could have been improved upon really, everything was good. The only thing was the black pudding was missing at breakfast!
Lovely scenic location, lovely view from room (that we had) to river. Good room size (superior). Easy and scenic route to walk (10 mins) to Salisbury cathedral.
We paid for breakfast (15 quid each) which was the worst breakfast of our holiday for us (we don't do English cooked breakfast, just "continental") as there was not even any decent (non-toast) bread, nor cheese or ham :-( Poor choice of cereals also. we actually asked for a partial refund but were turned down flat.
Location and parking
Size of room, position of room Room was not particularly clean Breakfast was unappealing
There were two twin beds put together- very lumpy
Miła i pomocna obsługa, wygodnu pokój.
Riverside location
Flat 9A door way in need of painting
Location is brilliant Staff are excellent Breakfast was fairly good
Bathroom needs updating No fried eggs at breakfast

Great setting & location . Short walk across the river to the cathedral. The hotel went out of their way to make our anniversary stay special. All of the staff were so friendly. Ellie & Becca on reception "went over & above" in ensuring that we enjoyed our stay . The housekeeping team & the maintenance man provided a very good service. The restaurant staff , particularly Deepak were lovely. This was our second visit & we would love to come back.
The location was beautiful. The room was clean and spacious.
Being charged for parking.
Location ideal for our needs, regular visits to the cathedral over the weekend.
Hotel appears to be in transition. It is generally 'tired'. Needs some investment. Room was "dull", decor not contemporary or in keeping either the style of the old part of the hotel. Broken tiles on floor and wall of the bathroom. No air con and fan provided was inadequate Table lamp reported U/S on our arrival and wasn't addressed until we were leaving. Shower temperature needed Housekeeping and a spanner to adjust the temperature. An unfortunate omission with he booking of a meal was partially redeemed by an apologetic glass of wine. Dispensers and coffee machine at breakfast all needed "topping up" and we had to ask for this to be done on more than one occasion, when it should be monitored during service. Not enough staff? The food generally was excellent, good choices and quality. Would we stay again, probably not!
Location ideal for walking into Salisbury. Outside seating ideal for joining with family. Friendly staff, special mention for George.
Location
Could do with a good clean
Lovely historic hotel only 10mins easy walk into Salisbury. Our room was quaint with beams but I would agree that the windows needed some attention as it was impossible to open them. Beautiful setting on the river. We very much enjoyed sitting out on the lawn having a drink or two in the evening. Breakfast was very good but could do with a bit more choice on the pastry front. Staff were all very helpful and informative I wouldn't hesitate to return Also I would agree parking should be free for guests as you had to give your registration anyway. A bit penny pinching.
Location, nice big rooms and friendly staff and breakfast was amazing
Nice next to the river
Very nice environment and big rooms Closed to the town center
Mini fridge is missing particularly during summer
Stayed here a couple of years ago with travel zoo deal and stayed again August 2026 beautiful location friendly staff the rooms and areas are tired I realise the cost of updating would be expensive and have sympathy with with the owners would we stay again …….yes but only for the location
Always a pleasure to stay here
The view from our room was beautiful and nice spacious rooms
Our room was not completely cleaned, shower didn’t work and the bed extremely uncomfortable
Zimmer ok. Frühstück in Ordnung.
Lovely room with view over the river. Friendly staff.
Would have liked more than one pod each to go in the nexpresso machine. Reverting to instant nescafe for morning coffee was a bit disappointing!
Staff were extremely friendly, location amazing & comfortable stay. Riverside garden is a lovely spot to relax and watch river activities and wildlife
Nothing really, would have preferred walk in shower but appreciate it's an old building so won't have all mod cons.
Alles sehr gut, vielen Dank!
The location is fantastic right on the River Avon, rooms overlooking the river and very comfortable. Would like to see a small fridge in the rooms.
No fridge in rooms and we was disappointed with the food on offer, ended up going out for a steak on the 2nd night of our stay….. No jam on offer / available for breakfast, Prawn cocktail for £10 with cheap ‘glassy’ prawns that were tasteless accompanied by a slap dash wipe of Margarine on the brown bread…..Come on Guys, check out The Chapter house prawn and Crayfish cocktail for £9.50!!
We stayed overnight on a Great Little Breaks deal. We checked into an Executive room which is in dire need of refurbishment. The cleanliness of the room was not of the greatest standard. Toilet bowl hadnt been cleaned just some blue liquid been poured down and marks still there ( needn't say more !) Cobwebs hanging off ceiling and dust all over tissue dispenser in Bathroom. Windows and doors in need of urgent upgrade as could hardly lock the outside door for access to garden. The table and chairs outside the door didnt look like they had been cleaned in months. On the plus side food was really good and the setting by the river is wonderful. To sum up i just think the hotel rooms are in urgent need of refurbishment and make sure you dont have a downstairs room as you can hear every creak from the floorboards above. Not much sleep when they are getting up at 5am walking about and not leaving the room for an hour !
The staff were friendly, the room was lovely. The location and the view was perfect. It was lovely to sit by the river. The food was delicious.
Paying for parking; I think that should be included in the price for residents.
Location, beautiful spot near the river and walking distance to Salisbury cathedral and town.
We didn't like the bathroom being full of tiny flies! Appreciate that the windows were open because it was very warm.
Kamer aan de tuin, grote kamer
Niet schoon, muffe lucht in de kamer
location lovely. Expected a 4 star but got 2 star at best. the rooms we stayed was room 27 which had damp on wall and door and meldew on the shower tray this was my daughters room who has autisim and only told us about it after we checked out. my husband and I stayed in room 21 a very outdated room that smelt of damp the bathroom was very outdated and not clean, The pictures shown by booking.com did not match what we had. we were also charged for parking? The breakfast provided was good.
This hotel is not 4 star and we were given a misrepresentation of what we were given. The rooms need serious attention or the hotel is honest with it's star rating.
Excellent location, friendly welcome, large bedroom, beautiful swans on the river adjacent to the hotel with outdoor seating close by. This good be a great hotel with some investment.
Needs a general refurb, and more attention to detail, hotel was generally clean if you didn’t look too closely. Breakfast was a little disappointing, warm items not re stocked promptly and fresh fruit was limited to a bowl of diced apples, dinner was just ok and very much depending on what was ordered. Garden seating area was unloved.
The room and breakfast are ok. The room was cool for this time of the year, so that was a good thing. The location is nice, Along the stream it is nice to sit and have beer or so.
Nothing special
Outstanding location. Delightful staff. Comfortable rooms. Nice dining offering.
The canned music in the gardens, especially after 10pm.
The location was pretty
Very dated needs a better clean and new paint
A great hotel with a lovely location by the river. Close proximity to City centre via a plant walk. An excellent breakfast and lovely friendly staff throughout our stay. A decent size room and comfortable bed. The evening meal is good value with a reasonable choice. Thank you
The bathroom could certainly do with upgrading around the bath and shower. The grouting and seals were very black in places and mould starting on ceiling. This should be better for a room sold as an "executive suite" The shower mechanism needs servicing as initially it was so difficult to regulate that the water was scolding hot and sprayed everywhere. Be aware that this is a great wedding venue and we had disco music beating out too loudly until 11.30pm
From start to finish, we truly couldn’t fault the service. From our very first meeting through to our perfect wedding day, everything was handled with care and attention. We had several meetings leading up to the day to ensure every detail was exactly as we wanted, and any questions we had were always answered promptly via email. For the price we paid, the level of service we received was second to none. Maisie went above and beyond to make sure I felt completely at ease on the day. She took so much pressure off me by handling last-minute details, and nothing was ever too much trouble. Most importantly, she was always approachable, supportive, and reassuring. The food… wow! Our guests are still talking about how incredible it was. I can be quite particular, and we made a few changes and additions to the menu, but everything was accommodated without hesitation. The team genuinely cared about making sure we had the best possible experience. The dj communicated with us throughout the process also to ensure we had everything we wanted and it’s was set up perfectly for our evening, again he went above and beyond to make sure it was perfect for us. We also booked the punting as an extra as this is also a bonus that rose and crown can offer and this experience for us and the guest was amazing. We will absolutely be returning for meals, along with many of our guests. The hotel grounds are stunning—perfect for a relaxing or romantic meal by the river, not to mention the beautiful views of the cathedral. If we could do it all again, we wouldn’t change a single thing—except maybe to make the day last a little longer! We couldn’t recommend The Rose and Crown enough. A true 10/10 experience.
Breakfast not included Paying to park
buon cibo, stile country stupendo e pulizia ottima

Location is perfect with beautiful riverside gardens. Quick walk to the cathedral. Staff were helpful. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. We had dinner in the restaurant -plenty of choice and our meals were good.
Bathroom was dated. Room was comfortable but in need of an update too. Staff were helpful especially in the restaurant although again it needs some updating.
Lovely location made better by the lovely weather. Quiet and relaxing sat by the river watching the swans. Staff couldn't do more, friendly, helpful and professional all round. Special mention to Ellie on reception. Breakfast was great, plenty of choice, never ate in the restaurant so can't comment.
Room needs a bit of paint and tlc. Outside patio was ideal but very dirty, needs a general clean up ..decor needed upgrading. Bed was very clean and exceptionally comfortable and room included iron and ironing board, hairdryer etc which is always needed.
We arrived at 1pm to a supposedly 4* hotel. The website not only advertised the four stars but said that lunch was to be served. There was no lunch despite the website stating there was. A party had monopolised the entire hotel and, as newly arrived residents, we were not even offered a sandwich. Welcome! It was a very hot day indeed and, having driven for hours, we did not want to walk into a city to find something to eat. We then asked for a fan for our room. We were told that they had all been taken. We later met an American lady who told us that she had asked, and had been given not one but three fans. After a “conversation” with reception they found one for us. I stayed in this hotel frequently a few years ago, and we also stayed there two months before this visit. But never, ever, again. This kind of contempt for repeat customers, when supposedly a 4* establishment, is utterly unacceptable. If they cannot service their residents they should not accept party bookings. By advertising lunch and not providing it they proved themselves contemptuous of their customers. In terms of cleanliness, the gents reception was desperately in need of a complete refit. The urinals were growing black mould. The hand-basins were cracked and stained dark grey. It was filthy.
We had a fantastic stay! We were a Summer Works group of 22 people, and the hotel went above and beyond by organizing a BBQ for us. The food was delicious, everything was well prepared, and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. The staff were friendly, attentive, and made sure everyone was looked after throughout our stay. The rooms were comfortable, the facilities were great, and nothing was too much trouble. A big thank you to the whole team for making our stay so enjoyable. We really appreciated the extra effort that went into hosting our group, and we would happily recommend this hotel to anyone looking for excellent hospitality. We hope to visit again!
The room was hot and poorly lit & ventilated , accepting it is a historic part of the building. Car parking was added as an extra despite not being mentioned in the booking (whereas the breakfast was stated). We waited an hour for our dinner (main course). The staff were very friendly, the location was brilliant and the building was great. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay.
See above
Great welcome, fabulous location on the river and lovely walk into the centre. We booked a suite and had a lovely spacious room with a super comfy bed and great bathroom.
On a very hot day, air conditioning would have been good but there was a fan and me were able to open windows. The place is old and some of the common areas in need of refurbishment. Breakfast was fine but nothing special.
The location was amazing! So quiet and peaceful but yet so close to town centre, we could just leave the car in the car park and walk in. The staff were all so friendly and helpful too, everyone was chatty and kind.
Could do with a bit of a make over as some bits look a bit out dated but others more modern. Also, car parking was advertised as free but we had to pay £5 per day
The staff were excellent, and the location superb.
The decor in the room was tired and the gents loo is in desperate need of an upgrade
The location
Staff were short tempered and offensive. One member of staff was ranting in full view of customers repeatedly using crude swear words. The bedroom was awful and to make it worse we had paid extra for a deluxe room! The windows looked onto the street so we had to keep the curtains closed because everyone walking by was looking in so the room was constantly dark. None of the windows opened and the heat of the room was unbearable - this room is uninhabitable.
Close to the Cathedral
Needs to be updated
Lovely location by the river. Quiet and easy to find.. Good car psrk (with a £5 chsrge) & good food in the restaurant.
Had to wait for 10÷ minutes at reception in order to check in.
A beautiful location on the banks of the Avon River. Good sized room and ensuite. Staff were friendly and helpful. Situated an easy stroll from Salisbury Cathedral and town centre.
Position to river and walking distance to town
All fine thank you. I had breakfast on the terrace. More helpful if the buffet were closer.
The brown colour of the carpets is now looking dated but otherwise the hotel is delightful especially its position overlooking the river.
The location was perfect. We had a very good welcome from the 2 young ladies at reception . Very helpful and friendly. The room led onto a garden with a river which was beautiful and we sat there for most of the evening. Room was large and very comfortable the food was excellent.
The only down fall was the shower was too hot we couldn't turn it down. No fan in room. No usb points . The beautiful hotel made up for that.
Location and restaurant plus breakfast.
Nothing.
We stayed one night on a very hot weekend. The hotel is charming, lots of original features in the old part. The staff were all friendly and helpful. We stayed in the Heath Suite. This room is very original. A lovely four poster bed, two seater sofa and separate table and chairs area. The room leads to an internal lobby to access the wardrobe and the bathroom. Bathroom needs updating. There’s a bath with shower over (good power) and shower curtain. The bath panel was water damaged. There’s tiling looks newer but some mould in the grout line. Basin with handy shelf above and a loo. Toiletries are Dove shampoo and conditioner and hand wash at the basin. The windows in the room can only be opened by staff and they are small so the room was very hot overnight. No air con but a small fan provided. Breakfast was well cooked but a bit disappointing. For the cost of the hotel, the breakfast felt stingy! Small croissants and small pain au choc, hot pans with fresh but not many things. Like there was about 8 rashers of bacon, 10 sausage, black pudding, hash browns, mushrooms, tomatoes, beans and scrambled eggs (no other eggs). It felt like if a family had come before us, there would have been nothing left. The yoghurts were an unknown brand of low fat pots of yoghurt. I prefer Greek. There was fruit salad and defrosted berries. The breakfast/conservatory room is a lovely spot looking down to the river. We took a coffee outside afterwards. The garden area generally is very relaxing for coffee or a pint! I would visit this lovely hotel again, but do think sone areas need an upgrade and the breakfast should match the price point.
Great location, staff where very friendly and helpful
Everything satisfactory, except (see next answer)
Shower over the bath is not good for older people. It can be difficult for older people to climb into a bath to use the shower, including myself.
the staff behind the bar were great on a very hot day, the room was a good size with a good view of the river
Neither bottle of white wine I ordered was chilled for a bottle of wine at £38 this is not good enough
Fantastic location on the river, rural feel and view of the cathedral.
Rooms were hot due to the heatwave. The fan supplied was inadequate. Too low powered and with a very short lead. The room, with terrace, expected wasn't available due to loss of the key.
Very well placed hotel to access Salisbury Cathedral, shops and restaurants. Beautiful view over the river from our room.
The hotel is ready for some updating. I didn’t like the shower over the bath & the shower curtain sticking to you when you are in the shower. I think these showers in the bath could be an accident waiting to happen, especially as you get older.
Pefect location. Close to cathedral and town center. Great breakfast.
Riverside views. Large bedroom. Proximity to city centre.
Bathroom was very hot!
Gute Lage und guter Preis
Etwas in die Jahre gekommen. Die Zimmer benötigen eine Renovation
Mooie ligging, direct aan een stromend riviertje. Prachtig buitengebied met overal zitjes. In de basis een mooi hotel.
Er moet beter schoongemaakt worden. Vensterbanken in eetruimte, glas koepel zit vol spinnenweb. Etc.
Its location is great right on the riverside very peaceful
There is nothing not to like
Definitely needs a refresh a bit run down
Location: The hotel is on the river, and access to the garden overlooking it, with spire in the background. This was the selling point for me. Its a short walk into town via the cathedral, and on to the Haunch of Venison - a fabulous old pub.
The local traffic. The hotel gave all guests a primmer as to when the worst of the traffic was so it could be avoided.
Location. All staff really helpful
Pillows. Wafer thin. Spoilt a good nights sleep. I did ask for more at 2pm but they never materialised
The location. The age and history of the building.
Rooms were very dated.
Size of rooms and bathrooms. The rooms opening out onto a lovely lawn area by the river which was unexpected
The actual bar area was in darkness which was a shame as it looked far more inviting than the dining area which they were using as a bar which felt unwelcoming and miserable
Good location for my parents who had appointments at the hospital.
My parents were very happy with everything so no unhappy comments.
Great location big rooms and great breakfast lawn area was great
We stayed during hot weather and as the towel rack in the bathroom was on central heating we were unable to turn it off so this made the rooms unbearable we had two fans but they were inadequate. The carpet was not clean I asked housekeeping to clean it but they said they would however they did not clean it
Surroundings
Air Conditioning
Sehr freundliches Personal. Essen war ausgezeichnet.
Edificio antiguo muy chulo, desayuno bien, personal muy amable.
Si tuviese aire acondicionado y nevera sería perdecto.
River frontage and being able to fish
in het centrum gelegen, veel wandelmogelijkheden . mooie tuin
This was our third visit. We have always loved the river location, the ease of parking, and the easy walk to the cathedral. Staff are lovely - friendly and helpful. Breakfast more than adequate and we could sit outside and enjoy the river. However we felt the rooms needed an upgrade. Bathroom is basic. No room fridge. No AC. Bedside lights not working. Carpet is dated. But bed comfortable. I feel conflicted with this review as have very happy memories of this hotel, and no criticism of staff, but it has started to feel 'tired'.
Super cute place on the side of a wonderful little stream, that had Swans. Food was good, location was in the middle of “town”, not much to walk to, but easy drive to Stonehenge and the sites nearby .
Historic and convenient nice riverside location
There was a wedding which was noisy and at £266 for bed and breakfast way too expensive
The view over the river was superb and even inspiring. The food was very good. Staff worked hard and seemed on top of their game.
Nothing to dislike
The location was perfect for the cathedral. The staff were great and the food was perfect.
The room was tired and the pillows weren't great.
Beautiful location. Great atmosphere, lovely food and great staff.
Everything was great.
Breakfast was OK, but not really exceptional. Bread & pastries were very bog standard. Hot food was good. Location was excellent.
The whole hotel is looking really dated and in need of a major refurbishment. Bathroom fixtures in particular looking very tired and dated. Who needs a bath? More showers please. The outside of the buildings needed a good clean & sweep. Location & gardens were beautiful.
The location for walking into town and especially the cathedral.
We loved everything about it. Only stayed one night, but the setting is lovely. Its not far to walk to the town centre so it's an ideal place to stay.
