Location was perfect for our trip. Very reasonable price

Staff were excellent. Great location
Some aspects were dated, the bathroom had seen better days.
Excellent service. All staff were helpful, patient and friendly. It looks like a real effort is being made, to improve and upgrade a slightly rundown hotel, so you get good value and cleanliness, but some upgrading needs to be tackled yet. We would certainly come again.
We were a bit put off by the worn bath, but on closer inspection it turned out to be perfectly clean, however could do with being upgraded to make a better first impression. We wish the present owners every success, with such a lovely place and great staff!
Town Centre location
Bathroom was clean but "tired" looking
St James is nicely situated opposite a church and has a good area to have a stroll round. The reception and restaurant area is a good size the bedrooms are easy to get to with a good size bed

I like how central the hotel is smack bang in the middle of the centre right next to Freshney Place walking distance to all the shops and surrounding area.
Smallest TV in the room which didn’t work had really bad signal not even a smart TV. No sockets by the beds at all and the bathroom fan was incredibly noisy. The room is very tired and dated could do with a good renovation.
I have stayed in the hotel many times and I am very satisfied.
Good customer service

Room was clean and the bed was comfortable.
The staff could not have done any more for us… brilliant
The staff

Wasnt overly clean in bathroom
It's a cool place. Supportive in moving my luggages

It’s a great hotel to stay at, beds are comfortable and they do a nice breakfast in the mornings.

Location
Outdated and in need of modernisation
Det lå centralt, venligt personale.
Det var lidt nedslidt kunne trænge til maling og nye tæpper
Good location, close to rail and bus stop. Room a little dated but, clean and comfortable. Enjoyed the breakfast.
Nothing
There was nothing to like was in room 140 and it was tatty the bathroom was not very good with the panel grotty black mould around tiles chip out of the bath no grab rail in very poor condition, rip in the carpet in the bedroom tired looking furniture, the bedroom widow was filthy looking out to a building site and hotel car park the hotel dawn chorus started at 5 not with birds but banging car doors flushing pipes people shouting to each other in the car park I could say a lot more don’t forget your ear plugs ( we did )
All staff super friendly Great location
Room a bit tired
Curatenia
It was near to the train station.
I felt that Receptionist on my arrival was not very welcoming...no plug sockets near to the bed...my room was clean and the friendly cleaner left clean towels and bedding outside my room...the room is very dated...the breakfast was ok...
Location was great and very friendly staff
Very close to train station and bus stop. Good breakfast. Comfy bed and clean.
Friendly/helpful staff and great food
The carpet was in a very poor state and was well overdue a replacement
God beliggenhed
Easy reach to train station, ample parking. Mixed views on the staff, dependent which day/which staff you get. In all they were quite pleasant
In dire need of a revamp. The rooms are grotty looking, but they are clean.
Cost, and the breakfast was lovely.
Room was a little unclean, and the TV screen was rather small !
The location
What an absolute dog hole. I wouldn't let my worst enemy sleep here. Awful room, hard bed, chewing gum on carpet, torn carpet, scratched furniture, random pipes in bathroom, faulty window and plug sockets. Dont bother staying here.
Nothing the bath was dirty and torn carpet in my room
Everyrhing about the stay
The hotel was good value for money comfortable bed spacious room breakfast was tasty
No air con A fan was in the room though so not a big issue
Staff fantastic
Needs updating cappit specialy
The staff at the hotel are so friendly and helpful, they couldn’t do enough for us. Exceptionally comfortable bed and quiet room, we all slept so well. The facilities in the room were perfect, tea and coffee making, an iron and ironing board, TV etc. super hot and powerful shower. All round a pleasant stay. Free parking was easy to access.
Sure the hotel is a little dated and rough around the edges but this is reflected in the price. We had a lovely stay and would stay again.
Very very unsatisfactory .
Everything
Very welcoming on arrival Very helpful according to my needs Lovely breakfast
The location
The poor rundown state of the carpets and furniture
Convenient, very comfy and very good choice for breakfast.
Bathroom was very small.
Room was clean , staff were polite and courteous arrived late on and was able to get food big portions and reasonably priced
Location. Food. Staff.
Mattress was on the hard side.
In the centre and easy to park
No hot water in the morning for a shoeer
Central location. But was like staying at Faulty Towers. Food ran out and drunken yobs in the courtyard opposite. We didn’t sleep all night because of the drunken yobs in the courtyard. The noise was horrendous. Truthfully avoid.
Ran out of food at breakfast, hard beds, drunken yobs outside the hotel
Best thing about the hotel was leaving. Nice staff.
Rock hard beds no - different to lying on the floor, unable to sleep. Caused painful, hips and back. Had a 3 hour inward journey, in pain. Duvet, just a thin, lumpy mess inside a torn cover. Had to fold it up into four in order to get some comfort to lie on the bed which left me with no bed covers .Awake all night with discomfort and pain. Left exhausted and in pain. The whole point of a hotel is to get a good nights rest. Put in the last two rooms directly opposite the building work with the generators going all night and the workmen banging at 7.am. Awful rooms, dirty, more like a doss house. Breakfast expensive and inedible. Other ‘guests’ complaining about the food, getting refunds. Lipstick and coffee residue on the room mugs. Mouldy shower curtains. Hotel manager promised to contact the next day over our experience and complaint. No contact, 6 days later, hence my review. Would have preferred to have discussed this privately rather than a bad review. But there you are.

The staff, friendly and helpful . Breakfast was good
Evening meal menu was limited Bathroom basic, shower area needs a good clean. Generally hotel needs a refurbishment.
Room was clean and had everything we needed , room cleaned everyday and towels , coffee ,tea replenished
No net curtain in the window , our room was overlooking the square where people / kids were sitting and hanging around , they could see straight into our room , didn't like having to draw the curtains and put lights on especially when it was hot , easy problem to fix with nets
Friendly staff
Located next to a public space plagued by anti social behaviour
The staff were pleasant, but i booked 2 rooms and i don't understand why 1 room was booked as Claire Johnson and the other was Johnson Claire. Which led to confusing with booking in.
Room 205- hole in room carpet, no ac, stain in bath, loo was stained, breakfast from 7.30-10am but by 8.30am there were no croissants, black pudding was over cooked on the outside but not completely cooked on the inside. You could hear outside noise (other people talking in hall etc). We had one table fan to cool down the room. Why was there no air conditioning? Also, the double bed in room 205 was too small. Not sure if it was a double bed. There wasnt alot in Cleethorpes for families.
The 2 person sharing plater
The bed was hard for my liking this is a personal preferance i dont hold that against the hotel, didnt get breakfirst on the sunday the card was not collected on the saturday/sunday night.
Not clean bathroom, bath stained. Having drink in bar ,people asking for cigarettes Kids outside smashing glasses, swearing.Overal the hotel needs knocking down and stating again. Manager walking round in his suit with piece paper looks busy!
The staff were very friendly and the hotel was in a good location. A good breakfast was served.
The hotel was a little shabby. There was a hole in my bedroom carpet and the room had was somewhat dated. The bath surround was mouldy and needed replacing.
The breakfast was Lovely, nice help yourself buffet selection, the coffee didn't taste of anything though, was just warm and brown but couldn't even tell it was coffee.
In the room ,the sockets on the dressing table are in acceptable as is tight and can't plug anything in,the light on one side bed switch didn't work and no plug sockets at the side of the bed .
Nice and close to the town.
Good location, helpful and polite staff.
The fact that my window could hardly open and it was so warm. I understand that hotel room windows can’t be fully opened yet literally it was such a tiny gap!
Hotel is perfectly located in centre a few minutes walk from station and Abbeygate which has some lovely bars & restaurants. Staff super nice & welcoming.
Such a shame that this hotel hasn't moved forward since we were here 7 years ago and that it's still living on past glory. Remember that this review is based on our stay and our experience and that others may have about the hotel. For us growing up in the Town the St James Hotel was always a top quality hotel that those with more brass would stay at or those that wanted to have their wedding bash would choose. However times have moved on but this hotel has sadly remained static. Firstly the Pros: • Freindly staff • Complimentary WiFi • Tea & Coffee making facilities • TV • Desktop Fan • Iron & Board • Available room service • Onsite parking at a very reasonable £3 (but remember to remove your valuables as this area has a high crime rate in general) and the car park is accessible from all surrounding walkways. • Onsite restaurant • Close to Town centre (but much building work ongoing for the next year/s so expect disruption. • 3 minute walk from train station. • 7 minute walk to bus terminal. • 3 minute walk to local Wetherspoons. • 6 minutes from A180. •15 minutes from Cleethorpes. Cons: • 3 out of 5 plug sockets damaging cables as too close to desktop so only 2 (which are each end of the room are accessible). • Shower head rail drilled more times than Bonnie Blue • Bath looks like it hasn't seen a cleaner in a few months. • Shower head doesn't extend above 5ft so if ya tall get ready for back ache having to bend down to wash ya head (this was also the same in my sisters room) • Basin doesn't hold water as plug had perished or no seal. • Carpet threadbare in places and stained to high hell. • Furniture totally mismatched and damaged. • Bathroom door step dirty and flaking. • Doors not been painted in many a year. • Bed very soft and not comfortable to sleep on (but again based on my preference) • Bed base dirty and damaged. • So very dated and in need of modernisation. • Breakfast from 06:30 - 09:30 & from the full English items on the hotplates it appears that it's been sat since start of serving. Bacon was overly salty and like cardboard (I appreciate that people like well done bacon), Sausages were very hard to get through as they'd been sat so long, black pudding was like rubber and the scrambled egg was so dry it had totally separated into small bits. If you're wanting a decent breakfast I would honestly advise either cereal and toast or fresh toast with beans or freshly prepared poached eggs. There is also the Continental option. I know a lot of readers will view this and say I'm being picky or overly unfair but the whole point of a review is to give an honest informative account of the experience. Alas this is why the room was as cheap as it was and that you only get what you pay for. The town is currently undergoing a massive much needed face-lift and once completed this hotel will be an unwanted eyesore unless a huge make over is given to it to once again make it a flag ship hotel for the Town.
I like the town centre location
The new car park charges
Without a doubt, this is one of the worst hotels I’ve ever stayed in. The cleanliness throughout the hotel was well below average and honestly felt like the cleaners simply didn’t care. Our original room was already disappointing, but after raising concerns, we were moved to another room — only to find that the new room was even worse than the first. To make matters worse, there was a vile smell of cannabis throughout the hotel, which made it extremely unpleasant and uncomfortable to stay in. It’s unbelievable that a room in this condition would be considered acceptable to give to paying guests. The overall cleanliness and general condition of the hotel really let it down. It felt like basic standards were simply not being maintained. The breakfast was probably the only positive — it was okay and certainly the best part of the stay. I appreciate that not every hotel stay can be perfect, but basic cleanliness, hygiene and a pleasant environment should be the bare minimum. Unfortunately, St James Hotel fell well short of that. Extremely disappointing and somewhere I definitely wouldn’t stay again. I must add the lady on reception although very busy was friendly and clearly knew she was working in a place that needed better standards. She was very helpful.
People and location
The hotel is very rundown and our shower never worked
Noise and run down state of the room
Location
Sadly the pedestrianised area outside the church attracts a LOT of large groups of youths and older who are drinking and swearing until late at night.
Value
Bit dated
Carpark
Room so disappointing . Worn disgusting dirty carpet, Furniture worn, old and marked. Bathroom cheap nasty old fittings, the bathroom required a clean shower curtain & non-mouldy sealant. We love Grimsby/Cleethorpes and the real people, but the area surrounding the hotel is a hangout place for loud drunks, sitting with music and cans of beer, not a safe feeling. You know it is bad when the hotel bar has to hosepipe the doorway to remove all the previous nights mess!
Not a lot
Needs a complete renovation. Mouldy shower curtain, stained walls by bed, generally not very pleasant to stay in. Seemed to be surrounded by homeless/drug users outside the hotel each morning from 7am til late, shame as the view of the minister is beautiful and the staff are very pleasant, can't be nice for them to work around that sort of environment.
The food was lovely and good value for money
Nothing all good
Obsługa bardzo miła i pomocna. Widok na kościół. Smaczne i urozmaicone śniadanie.
Obszar przy kościele jest chyba ulubionym miejscem miejscowych bezdomnych ale na to nikt nie ma wpływu.
The staff were very nice and that's about it
The room was very dated, the shower head is fixed to the wall and can't be moved.not the cleanest place.had the window wide open all night because of the heat and all we could hear is the local homeless crowd until 2am.not value for money in my opinion
Centrally located excellent staff and service. Everything you need for a short stay
The mattress was a little too hard for my personal comfort
Very good location, walking distance from train, Bus and shopping centre. free car park with token at reception.
No fridge in room. difficult in hot weather.
Plus Points: 1. Carpark cheap £3 per day and secure 2. Staff Did their best with a hotel that needs shutting down and renovating 3. Hair dryer 4. Towels changed daily Negative Points 1. Carpets worn and ready for skip 2. Furniture stained, worn 3. Bed small but sheets were ok 4. Room boiling hot 5. Location, at the front, you have to walk through teenagers playing loud music and groups of adults drinking, smoking and shouting, not a nice area (don’t pay extra for a view as this will be what you see and hear). 6. Bathroom, dirty and old, shower curtain even mouldy at the bottom Place needs shutting down and a complete refurb! Those that write great Reviews are either workers, family of owners or are staying in refurbed rooms?? First time not staying at the Wetherspoons up the road - big mistake

Dated rooms
Excellent location with the train station nearby and the shopping centre a few minutes walk. The room was standard and definitely requires modernising. However, it was quiet and relatively clean. The staff were fantastic - polite and friendly. The food was great in the hotel restaurant and I ordered breakfast to my room. The breakfast was standard and the orange juice was actually orange squash. I enjoyed my two night stay, a good location and friendly staff.
Rooms very dated worn carpets and deco stained lamp shades. We had to be asked to move rooms to be able to stay an extra night.
The front of house staff are lovely, engaging and always make time to stop chat offer assistance, a lot of laughter during my stay which was pleasant to see people interacting and engaging both with each other and residents of hotel, great when you are a lonely traveller. Location perfect in town centre with secure parking. The housekeeper throughout my stay on 2nd floor was lovely and very pleasant and accommodating.
Food in resteraunt could be better, was a challenge given I was meeting elderly family during my stay so went elsewhere for food. I would have preferred to have a meal with them in hotel.
The location
The dated and dirty room we stayed in. Right next to a new build, noisy, even on a weekend. Bed not very comfy. Having to wait for staff to check out.
Everything , lovely room , lovely staff very helpful understanding, friendly superb Room was nice and clean , lovely to have tea and coffee in our room Breakfast was delicious Great value for money Cant wait to stay again
Nothing to dislike
Great stay perfect location, friendly staff. Only downfall in this heat the rooms were soo hot, there was 1 fan provided but not enough for a family. Would be nice if there was a fridge in the room also. All in all we had a lovely time the cleaning lady was so helpful and kind. The rooms were decent and the beds were comfy. Would definitely stay again.
The staff was absolutely brilliant. The restaurant staff were very courteous and respectful. We felt the customer service received was excellent. We will definitely be going back to stay there again.
Lovely staff, good breakfast. Warm and nostalgic hotel. Lovely view of the church.
Bathroom could have been a little cleaner. Slight noise as expected in a town centre.
Spot on
Nothing
Central to the town.Enjoyed the view from our window of the church square.
Alot of homeless gather on the seats on the church square, especially at night.plus teenagers, which i can understand its what they do,but throwing and kicking rubbish around for others to pick up,which we witnessed.
Basic available needs such as tooth brush and atleast tooth paste was not provided When we ask they give like very very small size one which is around 2£
Overall excellent staff
Shower was difficult to adjust
Was great room was amazing we slept well
The noisy crack heads outdide
Room with a lovely view
Wasn’t anything to dislike
It's situated at a great spot for town
Reception is lovely but rooms are very tired could do with new furniture
Good location near the station and view of Grimsby Minster. Friendly staff. Good value.
Some noise from outside at times but not a problem.
Nice llocatiob
Good location. Rooms were dated but comfortable enough
Buffet breakfast was not replenished quickly enough so people were constantly waiting for food and drinks coming out.
Pleasant staff and helpful clean place
Rooms are looking tired
Location
A lot of stains on the carpets
Location staff
Rooms bit over price for what your getting
Location car park staff
Rooms bit over priced for what your getting

Dirty smelly dingy hell hole
Location
Nothing
Great location for my work but wow what an experience very out dated and dirty mould around bedroom window carpet dirty no headboard so dirty wall paper. Rock hard bed with an old dirty quilt side board very sticky . Breakfast Luke warm table very sticky stains on chair down and outs outside horrible won’t be staying again
The staff were lovely, the breakfast was lovely. The staff couldn’t do enough for you . Nothing was too much trouble.
The rooms were very old. They needed a massive upgrade. If the owners spent some money it would be a lovely place to stay as it was very central.
