Provider-sourced guest reviews.
Lovely friendly atmosphere. The bonus of having a small pool to go to in the morning was great. Room very comfortable. I also like the use of disposable cups in the room instead of crockery. Some people might not but I though it was good. Saves on time of turn around and staff not being run ragged. Thumbs up from me.
Lovely location
Room at the back looking out onto the bins on the ground floor- lots of noise from floor above
Staff are always fab and great with the product they are paid to deal with.
Room was dated, bed was extremely old and evidently had been repaired in the central portion as it peaked in the middle and rolled off either side.
Lovely hotel with great parking. Pool was an added bonus. Would be great if they could put in a jacuzzi and sauna. Food was good and there is a pleasant bar. Highlight was the friendly, helpful staff.
Lovely friendly welcome, all staff we interacted with were lovely. Good size room, good shower. Dinner was tasty.. Breakfast also good.
We had a room on the front by the main road. It was busy during the late afternoon and early evening. Traffic lightened off a little overnight, but there were still trucks going past at 4am... And they definitely were not doing 20mph!
Great hotel with friendly staff, great food, and great facilities. Located on the main street in Newtonmore, it also makes it perfect for exploring the village.
Full service property with lift.
Rooms a little cramped. Not a great value for the price.
Bar & restaurant
Can not fault the hotel for the food room and service.
On arrival we were greeted by a very nice gentleman. The first room we were given overlooked the street and had a window that didn't close properly so you could hear traffic noise quite loudly. My husband asked about the possibility of another room and we offered an alternative at the back of the hotel so we were very pleased. The staff here were all lovely and they did their upmost to help and nothing was too much trouble. The rooms are basic but clean and everything you would expect, tea making facilities, iron, hairdryer etc. The food was good, great service and overall we enjoyed our stay here. We didn't use the pool so can't comment on that. Car park is across the road from the hotel and did get full so a couple of occasions we had to park on the street but not a big deal as ample places. Would definitely stay here again.
Very comfortable and charming hotel with great staff , tasty food and well appointed rooms Good quality bedding and a huge bathroom with walk in shower , bath and a large vanity unit for all of our stuff Nice big fluffy white towels and got an extra one to use at the pool which is very small but I was the only one there , so no prob We had breakfast and dinner both days and we really enjoyed the food Well presented and very tasty Staff were so friendly and happy to help I read previous good reviews and they are all true , so go ahead and book this wee charming place . You will be well looked after and for a very reasonable price Would def return and highly recommend
Staff were amazing, helpful and knowledgeable and despite being busy were lovely to everyone. Restaurant great and food amazing. Breakfast also great. Thank you. Beds were very very comfortable
Very noisy, doors slamming, rooms not great soundproofing. Tea and coffee pretty basic for the amount of money paid, not enough for 2 people.. One set of hair shampoo and soaps, not enough for two people. Pool is very small and no towels available. Need to make it clear at checkin how to use the pool. Very expensive for what you got. Upstairs quite tired looking.
Great wee pub, pool table, dog freindly & lovely staff.
It was traditional, comfortable and spacious. We loved it!
Fantastic hotel. Great facilities, room large and bright, large comfortable bed, had everything we needed including fan which was a bonus as we were fortunate to have great weather. Breakfast great - hot and cold buffet, good selection and evening meals were delicious (fantastic steak pie). All staff friendly and looked after us well. Highly recommend The Balavil. We will definitely be returning.
No complaints at all. Everything was perfect.
Food was cooked OK.
Service could be better. Food choice and presentation could be better.
A warm welcome from the staff throughout my stay. They understood I was a walker and were enthusiastic and supportive. The food was excellent, especially dinner. There were a few problems with my room when I came back in the evening of the second day but they handled these very promptly and efficiently. The location is superb for hillwalking and the town is pleasant and peaceful.
The traffic going past on the road outside my window seemingly all night! I had to keep the windows open because the weather was sunny and warm, and I am not complaining about that; never take good weather for granted in the Highlands. A bedroom at the back of the hotel would have been quieter. The road is a trunk road (A86), so gets a fair bit of traffic. I think it was made worse because of overnight repair works at the west end of town. It is a long, straight road and you can hear the traffic coming from a long way off.
Nice homely, friendly, family-run hotel, excellent food, well-appointed rooms. Extensive whisky and gin menus too!
Excellent, friendly and very helpful staff. Lovely hotel with great food and very comfortable rooms.
I liked that the staff were very helpful and there was a swimming pool for my daughter to use during the stay.
I did not like the price we had paid for what we got, the room was small with 3 single beds, kettle not great, no cups or teaspoons only paper cups with cardboard stirrers. Not the cleanest, we found stuff under one of the bedroom cabinet including someone else’s keycard.
Pool, restaurant, very helpful staff
N/A
Nice hotel, bar & restaurant staff. Clean rooms, nice shower.
No air con or fan!
Ok hotel, but nothing special. Breakfast choice was very limited, with low quality breakfast items (including terrible coffee). I expect much better when paying over £100 a night!
Friendly staff. Scottish themed decor
We loved it from the moment we walked in. Stylish decor, friendly staff, and our room smelled so good! The place was immaculately clean, and it has a small swimming pool, which was just perfect for a dip after a long days' hike, or for morning exercise. There's a bar and a restaurant, well stocked and with really delicious options. The bed was comfy. All great.
The only two things would be for the pool to be open earlier (for a pre-breakfast swim) and for there to be more interesting vegetarian options on the menu.
Just had another fantastic stay at this family run hotel. All the staff are so friendly. It is so comfortable & cosy. It’s an ideal place to stay to explore the area. The food is excellent! We will certainly be back.
The location, the cleanliness and the efficient, friendly staff.
The paper cups in the bedroom - leaky! Perhaps a proper cup and saucer?!
Clean room. Buffet breakfast.
Not enough shower gel or shampoo for 3 persons.
Lovely bar and restaurant
Bed could have been more comfy, bedroom was overall good
Friendly staff, spacious accommodation, good quality food.
All of it. There is a lift to the first floor but we had help with our luggage. Being at the end of the corridor this was a great help. The room was spacious, clean and warm. Tea, coffee, kettle, TV. Bathroom with a shower. There is a swimming pool but didn't use it. We ate in the restaurant. Great for meat eaters but not much choice for non meat eaters. But the food is top notch.Breakfast was a help yourself to fruit, yogurts, pastris, juice, tea, coffee and cooked items came on order.Everything we needed for an overnight stay was great .There is a free car park opposite the front of the hotel.
There wasn't anything that we didn't like about our stay.
Good breakfast Helpful and friendly staff
Room was small and bore little resemblance to the rooms on Booking.com
Renoviertes Bad, Gute Küche und Frühstück
Kind helpful staff Food lovely
I stayed here recently for work purposes. Nothing was too much trouble for the amazing staff at this hotel. From facilitating parking for my larger works vehicle to arranging a later than usual meal, the service was impeccable and went above and beyond. The accommodation was comfortable and the food very nice. I would whole heartedly recommend this hotel.
Fantastic experience the staff couldn't do enough for you. The food was great really enjoyed my breakfasts. Great location with loads to do in the surrounding area. The room was lovely and the hotel even had a pool - wonderful holiday and I would recommend this hotel to everyone. In addition we found the hotel very accessible ( and accomodating) for anyone with a disability. Absolutely a 20 out of 10 experience!!!
We had a lovely stay here recently. Rooms very clean, and bathroom had been upgraded . Had a problem with TV, was fixed within 20 minutes. Great choices on the dinner menu, and breakfast menu is buffet style. We used the small indoor pool, ideal after a day in the hills. Buses come through the village for Aviemore and Inverness. Staff so friendly and helpful
James and the staff were welcoming and friendly. The pool area was clean and the food was delicious and filling. The room was lovely with everything we needed for our stay.
No issues
Staff were friendly and helpful . Food was decent.&
No secure storage for clothes etc in swimming pool changing rooms.
The staff were very extremely friendly and helpful making us feel very welcome for our entire stay.
The Balavil Hotel is an excellent venue in a beautiful village location. The rooms are very comfortable and exceptionally clean. The food is excellent and the service first class. All members of staff make their guests feel very welcome so the hotel has a warm, friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
I liked the friendly staff, and the peace and quietness of the hotel.
Pillows to soft for me, but that is a small negative
The breakfast was excellent couldn't have asked for better
Nothing everything was first class
Excellent breakfast. Dining room nicely laid out.
We really enjoyed staying at this hotel - comfy room with plenty of space. Restaurant and bar was brilliant and the food was an excellent quality.
Staff, the breakfast and the evening meal even though it was overpriced!
Mattress far too soft and the mountain of dust on top of the headboard was really bad!
Great welcome. Good was delicious. Location stunning.
Location, beautiful room. Lovely food
Nice decor, well refurbished. Comfortable chairs, beds, seats everywhere. Everyone was so friendly. Great breakfast. Really amazing bacon.
Situated in a road, so a little traffic noise. The room was very warm at night.
Lovely hotel with a friendly atmosphere. Staff were lovely & the food in the restaurant was fabulous. We really enjoyed our stay.
Only complaint would be room was very warm but it wasn’t really an issue.
Super hotel with a warm welcome and friendly staff. Our room was lovely, clean and warm. Atmosphere is relaxing and very homely with the cosy stove in the bar. The dinners were very tasty and the breakfast great too.
Nice quiet hotel
Can’t fault anything
Friendly staff. Comfortable room and updated bathroom. Comforting tasty dinner. Great location.
We could hear everything happening in the room above us, including the very noisy bathroom fan and sounded like the geyser every time they showered. This was unfortunate because they went to bed really late and woke up early.
A lovely night away, free upgrade to a larger room just because they had availability. Staff were all local and friendly, efficient and professional. Food was brilliant and lounge cosy. Left some clothing in the wardrobe and received it in the post 3 days later. Absolutely brilliant wee place and couldn’t recommend it highly enough. Great place, great food, great staff. We will definitely be back.
I stayed at this hotel recently due to a family funeral in the area. What was obviously a very sad and difficult time was made much easier by the wonderful, caring staff and the clean, very comfortable room. Dinner and breakfast was amazing and piping hot! Thank you Balavil team.
Quiet and comfortable, ideally located for the surrounding area. Staff friendly and welcoming and the breakfast is freshly prepared and plentiful
Thank you for a great stay , clean , warm , friendly staff , food was amazing , will be back .
The hotel is well situated, easily accessible from the A9 and right next door to a coop if you need anything. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, you didn’t feel in any way like an inconvenience. The food in the restaurant and at breakfast was great. Although some of the dinner options were a little unexpected, e.g the haggis starter with a whisky and mustard sauce came in a kid of soup bowl, with the haggis in the middle surrounded by the sauce, almost like a soup. However, it tasted great so was good to have all that whisky sauce! Breakfast was great both days, all your cold stuff and a cooked to order menu too.
Nothing really!
What a lovely find, was a total last minute booking and I’m so glad we did, every member of the team were lovely nothing seemed to much for them. Room was clean and obviously a new bathroom had been put in and looks great. We had breakfast and dinner all had been cooked fresh. Cannot fault anything at all and we will definitely be back. Thanks again for an amazing stay.
The staff were extremely friendly and efficient.
The beds were far too soft and i would have liked to have an armchair in room rather than dining chairs.
Friendly family owned hotel where all Staff were helpful, pleasant, friendly. Would stop and have a chat and recommend things to do when visiting Inverness or other areas Any problems were quickly sorted like not wanting paper cups in our room - they gave us cup & saucer, extra milk.etc. Porridge for breakfast. You only had to ask and they were soon on your case with a friendly smile and pleasant manner. They go above and beyond. Wonderful atmosphere, homely and comfortable. We stayed in room 5 and our only complaint was the floorboards creaking everytime you walked from the first bed to the bathroom, trying not to wake my aunt. Tried avoiding, but found it impossible.
Safe, but not secure, parking across the (quiet) Main Street. Staff were friendly and helpful, the room and bathroom were clean and well prepared. The breakfast was excellent, with plentiful healthy options to choose from.
Such a great little hotel in a cozy small village. Traveling with a friend and our plans got blown away by Storm Amy. We scrambled and found this hotel at the last minute, which was one of the best parts of the trip. Travel weary from hours of driving, we walked in and immediately received a warm greeting, given our room key, and offered dinner in the dining room. The food was so good my friend and I nearly cried. It reminded me of my grandmother’s cooking. The staff were professional and friendly and they even had singers in the bar for evening entertainment. I will definitely book at this place again when I travel to Scotland and always remember the good time I had here.
Very basic rooms, not particularly clean. Breakfast food average, evening meal bland and not made with fresh ingredients. Gluten free options are sorely limited even with advance booking. Staff uninterested. Glad to get home.
inchecken
We went here for dinner last night absolutely excellent pub meal at reasonable price. The venison stew is amazing & definitely worth trying. Desserts were also good & staff professional & friendly. Definitely try this place.
Gorgeous old building, lovely clean room and bathroom. Great food in the restaurant!
Nothing it was impeccable, great value
I had an outstanding stay at this hotel. From the moment I arrived, the service was warm, professional, and attentive without being intrusive. The team went out of their way to make me feel welcome, and nothing was too much trouble. The room was immaculate and extremely comfortable, giving me one of the best night’s sleep I’ve had in a long time — the bed was perfect, the room was quiet, and every detail had clearly been thought through. The food was equally impressive, with a menu that was both varied and delicious. Everything I ordered was fresh, well presented, and full of flavour. Combined with the excellent service, it made for a thoroughly enjoyable dining experience. Overall, this hotel delivered on every level — comfort, food, and hospitality. I left feeling completely refreshed and already look forward to returning. Highly recommended!
Very friendly atmosphere, had a lovely quiet room away from noise, food very good, large collectoln of whisky.
Perfect location , The Atmosphere was Amazing with Friendly Staff . Very comfortable bed, Good value for money, very clean spotless and shower room. Noise level really low, even with a Big Celebration happening on the public bar. Highly Recommend a stay in the Balavil if your visiting Newtonmore 👌
Personnel accueillant et serviable Piscine Restaurant et petit déjeuner La ville Soirée musicale
Chauffage excessif dans la chambre et bruit
Very good friendly attentive staff. Prioritised you a place to book evening meal as they get fully booked by walk-ins & as their food is exceptional. Good breakfast service
The 1 only thing that let the experience down was the uncomfortable bed leading to uncertain sleep.
Comfortable and an excellent value. Staff are very welcoming and gracious.
The property was warm and clean and well situated in Newtonmore
The lift still included stairs to the room
A staff member named Isla was outstanding: always smiling, helpful and proactive. The food was delicious. The hotel decor was traditional with comfort in mind. There was a good buzz in the bar and dining areas. I had a great, hot shower with good pressure and the bed was clean and comfortable.
Chosen because of the great location for touring the area, competitive pricing and also that it has a bar and restaurant so no need to go hunting for somewhere to eat after a long day. Friendly welcome and excellent service from all the staff throughout the hotel during our stay. A warm and comfy feeling to the hotel, from the attractive muted tartan fabrics and the dark wood to the leather chairs. A cosy bar with staff who were very knowledgeable and helpful with an impressive choice of whiskeys that were available (reasonable prices too). Large room with double aspect windows (room 26) and high ceiling. Very comfy bed and duvet. I did ask for a foam pillow (instead of feather) and one was immediately provided. Excellent choice of items at breakfast included in the price of the room (best black pudding I've ever tasted!) that set us up for a busy of day of touring the area. The dinner menu always included daily specials too which offered a good choice of items. Tasty food and good service. Would recommend booking a table rather than risk missing out as the restaurant is very popular. I would certainly recommend the Balavil and be very happy to go back and stay again.
Staff were lovely. Comfortable hotel. Lovely room. Nice atmosphere.
