Comfy, clean
Room was small but very classy and clean, great view from the window and windowsill to enjoy it from.

Excellent hotel.
Park across the street is not good, lots of noise.
The room and bed were lovely. The linens were very comfortable, and the room service was great for breakfast. The TV has lots of options to watch, and the staff is also very friendly.
The only thing that could have been better was the shower door did not close properly. Overall, it was not really an issue as there was not a big mess or anything.
I loved my stay here — beautiful room, a charming lobby from another era, friendly staff, and a great location. The in-house dining option — The Grange — is special, with a great bar scene and an amazing menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In addition, lots of dining options within a short walk of the hotel. Highly recommended.
Excelente location, close to cathedral, capitolio, beautiful parks etc Kaitlin in the restaurant its excellent
Staff, room, experience.
Sketchy neighborhood after dark.
Hotel had all amenities and services expected. Adequate room service offering. Valet parking very efficient for busy location.
Hotel has a bit of a formal ambience for leisure travel. Works very well, but clearly focused on business travel.
Great location, comfortable bed, clean room and a very good breakfast. The staff was friendly and we really enjoyed our stay
Nothing significant. Everything met our expectations
The entire staff was very helpful and friendly.
No Pool.
I had such a great stay. The staff were kind and helpful. The hotel and my room were clean and my bed was so comfortable. I love the historical charm mixed with new features that were modern but tasteful. The location is perfectly central to walk 10min to the Capital Building and California Mueseum and 20 min to Old Sacramento. Highly recommend the attached restaurant Grange. Food was delicious and all of their staff were kind too! Love that they provide a late night room service menu.
Just a heads up, depending on the side of the building your room is on you may hear the one-off loud music from cars driving by. Also, this is more for all of the hotels in downtown, but I wish the parking was slightly less expensive. Tip: park your own car in the garage across the street for a $30 day rate vs $50. If a Marriott member the valet may be complimentary.
Wanted to stay downtown walking distance to the capital and surrounding area. The Citizen was a perfect spot, but not the perfect timing as there were concerts in the park across the street and it was loud. The hotel doesn't have sound proofing. Went to the restaurant for quiet. I loved my room with 2 windows, one facing the sunset the other facing the park. Walking about there were many restaurants which was very nice. The drawback is the homeless living right on the streets everywhere.

It was quite not a large hotel very quaint and very comfortable.
The bed was very comfortable
Now this hotel is pretty nice if you just want to go to tourist spots because it’s next to the rose garden, the state capitol and other places, but my family had booked a suite on the 14th floor. We arrived between 11:30-12:00. They said that the room would be ready by 3:00 which was ok because we would be at a birthday party- which was specifically why came to Sacramento for so it was ok - but they texted us that the room was ready at 6pm. Now it was ok because we were still eating and celebrating but if we weren’t we would still be waiting. When we arrived at our room we saw a pull out couch which one of our family members would be sleeping. We didn’t think much of it until we actually had to go to bed. We had called room service about three times by now and no one had come in so about one hour to 2 hours later room service came with our blankets sheets and pillows and what not for our bed but nobody actually helped us set it up so our grandma which was going to be sleeping there had to do it with no help, and she was really tired and cold so that’s another thing. I would like to give out a big shout out to Kaitlyn, which was our server at breakfast, she was really nice and helped us out a lot.
Beautiful historic hotel with many original details preserved
This hotel should have bathrobes!
What a first class hotel! Aside from its overall atmosphere everyone we encountered was cordial and accommodating, from the doorman to the front desk to the room attendant. Each not just acknowledging, instead asking deliberately to help, meet a need, and make sure we had been taken care of. Everyone ended each encounter with a personal message. Clearly people who understand how to make a difference!
Do not trust the valet at the citizens hotel in sacramento. They crashed my car into another one.Left it there for twenty minutes on top of the other car and is now refusing any kind of responsibility for it. The guy that runs the Val service is a real piece of work. He will tell you that it's your fault for something. His company did to your vehicle. He will find any excuse in the book to blame you for something that they did to your car. They get out of it by refusing to talk to anyone. They were refusing to give any information to my insurance company.Their refusing to give any information to the police. Basically , they're going to crash your car and get away with it. This guy is sleazy, and honestly, the hotel is no better. They are refusing to give the video footage to my insurance company as well. The hotel is super loud at night. You will get no sleep here. Please read the rest of the reviews 2.They are bad one car got water damage because of the valley and they did the same thing to them. Trust them at your own risk. But they will mess with you and your car and then stick you with the bill.
We were here for two weekend nights. We like staying in historic hotels, and this one has a nice vibe of history. Unlike many historic hotels, the lobby is not that large, but there is a nice mezzanine area, and the early 20th century feel is definitely there. The hotel elevators definitely reeked of history. As with many historic hotels, our king room was pretty small, as was the bathroom. It did have a nice shower and large flat screen, and everything in the room worked well. Some of the staff were very friendly, but some were just all business. The Grange restaurant in the hotel is one of Sacramento's most highly rated. Breakfast there was excellent. Dinner was good, but not exceptional. Valet parking at $50/night seemed high for Sacramento. There is an OK fitness room. The hotel's location is a bit of an issue. Sacramento's downtown is very spread out. The hotel is just a couple of blocks from the state capitol, but it's an area with a lot of homeless people (although I didn't encounter any panhandling). The park across the street seems to attract the homeless. When we were there, they had a music festival in the park, and the noise was loud. But it was over at a decent hour, and was no bother for us. Overall, we're glad we stayed there.
Bed was nice, room size good
cost of valet
It’s 10 mins walk to Safe Credit Union convention center. There is public parking across the street
The bed was uncomfortable. I got a neck pain and my husband back pain the next morning
Room was not fully stocked. Need robes.
Need to pay for parking
The hotel has a great vibe with old world architecture styling coupled with a staff that is friendly and very helpful adding to the experience, but that is where the goodness ends. I will make sure I check the venue across the street before booking again. I was here for a Friday and Saturday night with both nights having a large street festivals in the park across the street and all I can say is LOAD....the hotel staff were even annoyed. This would have been something to update customers when booking because I cannot emphasize just how load the music and crowd were. Again, everything about this hotel is great; building, decor, staff, bar/restaurant, but the noise from the street festival very much ruined my stay.
It is a beautiful historic building, located at a nice location close to restaurants and the Capital Building.
It was difficult to get information during my stay. I had a hard time getting through to front desk via phone. In addition, there were no maps posted anywhere that told you where amenities like the gym were located. The menu on the TV was no help. No maps or info at the front desk, not in the room, nor in the elevator.
Hotel is nice
Downtown Sacramento is a disaster. Downtown Sacramento feels very unsafe and poorly maintained. The park across from the hotel is heavily occupied by people struggling with homelessness and substance use, which makes the area uncomfortable. There’s also loud drag racing at night, adding to the sense of disorder.
Wonderful, unique and comfy hotel! Love the old styling - just added the best vibe. Room was comfortable and well-decorated. Staff was friendly, helpful and added to the experience. Would definitely stay here again. I'm writing a separate review for their restaurant, which was exceptional as well,
The whole vibe at the hotel is great. It's very calm and welcoming. Staff was great. Shout out to Ludwig from the valet staff!
We have been celebrating my boyfriend’s birthday annually in California for the past 5 years and this was the first hotel stay I’ve ever experienced such sweet hospitality. The concierge surprised us with a complimentary bottle of champagne. It was just the perfect way to start the birthday celebration. Thank you Jarrett!
Excellent customer service, staff was amazing. I had the valet take my car and every time I requested my car, they would bring it out for me right away. The room was beautiful and clean.
The room didn’t have trash bags.
Landmark building for special occasions.
Walls were a bit thin.
The location
The room was small
It’s a beautiful hotel! Location is fantastic. The restaurant is amazing!!
The hallways smell like old marijuana smoke. The walls are paper thin. I had neighbors all night until 3:30 AM partying. I told the staff and they never calmed down.
There was no fitted sheet on the bed and was told they dont put fitted sheets on the bed. Valet garage door broke and i waited an hour for my car. The noise from street and elevators was loud and it was not a restful stay.
Absolutely gorgeous historical building with a phenomenal restaurant attached. Staff were welcoming and amazing!
Sadly, there were many homeless people just across the way in the park: however, the hotel did have security guards at the front doors and the location was central.
The Citizen is a beautiful, historic hotel. It is impeccably clean. I felt safe inside the hotel.
I didn’t hear back from the email I sent inquiring about a possible early check in. It was hard to find a direct phone number to the hotel. Phone numbers were linked to a corporate Marriott center.
I had an amazing time at the Citizen! Ashely and Jarron at the front desk were super helpful along with Izzy at the bar made my experience extremely enjoyable! Next time I’m in the city I’ll be back!
A bit worn. Small reception area
My partner and I stayed at the Citizen over the weekend without issue. However, upon check out, we received a bill that included a $98 charge for a dinner at the Grange Restaurant. We called the front desk to inquire about the charge and request its removal as we did not eat or drink on site. The attendant apologized for the mix up and stated that she would work with the restaurant manager to get the charge removed. When asking if we'd receive an updated bill, we were told "yes, we'll get this removed and send an updated bill your way". Hours later - we still hadn't received an updated bill. We called the front desk again and spoke with Alexis for a status update and were told the charges were still on our bill. Then, she informed us that there was nothing she could do about it as there was no hotel manager on site and that the restaurant manager was likely gone for the day. We asked if we could be transferred to the restaurant managers direct line. There was no answer so left a voice mail requesting a call back. Considering that we were told hours earlier that the matter would be fixed, we called the front desk back to see if there was anyone else we could speak to. Alexis answered again and rudely stated "no" and reminded us that it was holiday and that they were working with limited staff - not our problem. Then, we questioned if the restaurant held a receipt in their possession with our signature on it. Surely an internal/merchant copy of the receipt was retained by the restaurant, signed by the person who received a free meal, and could be easily validated. Alexis rudely spoke over us and held firm that this was a restaurant manager issue that she could not assist us with. Fair enough. Having enough with the lack of service we received post check out and especially during this call, we disconnected. My partner and I are Marriott loyalists who have stayed at this location several times and will never return back. Additionally, we will be filling a merchant dispute the charges we did not make should the restaurant manager remain unavailable and continue to fail on following through with making this right. As for Alexis, hire better front desk staff who practice empathy. We won't be back and may question staying at any Marriott property ever again.
What a great hotel! I loved the check in and Angelica took great care of me. She made me feel welcome and was fast and efficient. I didn't get to meet the maintenance team but my hat is off to them. They keep this 100+ year old hotel (that's what I was told when I asked) in great shape. Everything in my room was well cared for and in working order. That isn't always easy in older hotels. I didn't get to try the restaurant because it was a quick stay but breakfast looked like they were busy. Loved my stay and this would be my choice if I am back in the area.
Alles war traumhaft das Frühstück und das Bett waren das beste
Breakfast was delicious. Cleanliness of the room and everything functioned as expected.
Valet did take a while and I was checked out when I planned on returning same day. I also didn't like that upon checking in, I was not advised that there would be $100 hold per day on the card for incidentals. Also, I almost got charged for valet parking when I was advised upon check in that it would be comped throughout my stay when I sign up as a Bonvoy member for the first time. Also the hotel was a little loud at night from being on the main street.
The staff was fantastic
Feasibly the worst bed I've slept in. The windows don't keep any sound out. Felt like I was outside.
Absolutely loved staying here! It's a short walking distance to the convention center, it's a beautiful hotel, and the restaurant The Grange is lovely to sit in in the early morning to eat the delicious food. As a Marriott Platinum member, I love how this hotel offers you two free entrees daily at their restaurant. Really good service. The staff was friendly and helpful, the room was clean, and the location is in a good place. Downsides I experience, but which would not affect me returning to this hotel: If you're a big guy like me, the toilet seat is something to consider. It's one of those old toilets with a circle seat and not an elongated seat so be ready for awkward bathroom visits. There is only valet parking for this hotel and it can be easy to miss where to bring your car in if you've never been to the Citizen before and don't know where valet is. These criticisms are mostly for myself to remember in the future when I should return to this hotel, but overall it is an excellent hotel and I had a great stay.
The holtel and staff were great
The location is not great.Area seems sketchy.
Valet needs more assistance and line was long.
Stunning
The food in the restaurant is very good. Atmosphere, decor and history of the hotel is what we love about the hotel. Plus some great views too from the upper floors.
We've stayed twice and have had a great experience. The bathroom pocket door on one of the higher corner rooms was a little off and could use a little maintenance to work better.
The property was extremely clean and had a sweat aroma almost like a bakery.
What I like most about the property was the service and the attention to detail in the decor.
I have been booking rooms at The Citizen Hotel (Autograph Collection) almost every single week for the past year—easily 52+ nights annually—for high-profile celebrity clients. That consistent, high-volume business ends today because of one front desk agent’s complete unwillingness to help. On December 14, 2025, my client arrived to check in but had lost his wallet and couldn’t present a physical card for incidentals. I immediately called the desk and offered to provide a credit card authorization form (standard practice in the industry). Agent Anissa flatly refused, citing “policy” for third-party bookings. When I asked her to simply cancel the existing non-refundable reservation so I could rebook directly and handle payment myself, she again refused and told me to contact Expedia/Hotels.com—even though Expedia confirmed the hotel has full authority to cancel or modify. Because of Anissa’s rigid, unhelpful stance, I was forced to book and pay for a second room that same night for the same guest. I lost an entire unnecessary room night due to her lack of flexibility and poor customer service. I escalated the issue to management (Antonio Sifuentes, Director of Rooms), who apologized but offered no refund or meaningful resolution—only the suggestion to book directly in the future. That does nothing to address the immediate financial loss caused by their staff. As a result, I have canceled all remaining reservations for the rest of the year (including this weekend) and will no longer book at The Citizen Hotel or any other Autograph Collection property. You’ve permanently lost a guest who was bringing you guaranteed revenue of at least 52 nights per year, if not more. There are plenty of hotels in Sacramento that understand hospitality means working with loyal guests in reasonable situations. The Citizen Hotel clearly does not. Save yourself the frustration—stay elsewhere.
Location
The staff is really snotty and the room I booked somehow got taken so my room wasn’t what I payed for
The restaurant la Grange
Bad service. The staff did not know anything.
My room at the Citizen was quite lovely. It was clean and had a fresh scent. The connected restaurant (Grange) has phenomenal farm to table food, with lovely staff. Maria and Avalon were my severs tonight (11/23/25), and they treated me and the other guests with respect and friendliness. Very down to Earth people. Matt at the front desk has also greeted me with a smiling face and kindness every time I come in. The valet staff have been very responsive and informative. Overall, great team here at the Citizen Hotel.
We didn't eat breakfast there. It was close to the concert we went to so we could walk. I would stay there again.
The the cost if parking in their garage. They didn't have cups to drink water.
It’s an interesting historic building in the heart of downtown
The rooms are fine, comfortable, just a bit cramped, dated, not very well appointed for the price.
It was handy to most places, room was spacious and comfortable.
Staff was great
Horrible location. Right in the middle of a homeless camp. Tents out front. People sleeping on the sidewalk. Absolutely horrible place to stay and feel safe. Don't bring your family here
Walking distance to Capitol, old town, and great restaurants. Easy parking with valet and parking garage option. If you have an electric car, try the city hall parking structure across the street, free slow charger. Be careful of syringes and razor blades
Nice hotel and friendly staff. Tiny rooms - not for families. Conveniently located downtown but lots of homeless.
The hotel is beautiful and just what I expected for a historical hotel. The only thing that they missed was putting in triple pane windows so you can’t hear everything that is going on downtown. We heard loud music from a nearby event that went on until 2am. It was like we were there the noise was so loud. That was our only con. Everything else was a pro.

Tudo em geral
You would think at the price they’re renting these rooms that they would at least offer valet or validated parking garage. They should really ask the city to keep a quarter mile radius in each direction of their property clear of homeless people. The walk from the property to the available garage was a bit sketchy. The property itself, amenities & restaurant inside the hotel were amazing! Rooms were clean and the character of the brick building were absolutely stunning.
View. Location. History. Excellent service.
Great burger and nice staff! Valets were super helpful, neighborhood a little rough -- walking distance to great restaurants and Golden One Arena!
The hotel staff were friendly and very efficient. The rooms were nice and clean, with a comfortable bed. Valet staff was also fairly efficient but the entire valet setup is a mess due to lack of parking and traffic. We had to double park along with two other cars in order to check in. I might have preferred self parking but it was really unclear on how parking worked. Valet was $49 which also seemed pretty expensive. A parking fee of 20% the room rate just sounds crazy to me.
What a crap show…I booked their second highest level suite. At check-in I asked if any upgrades were available. Brett at the front desk gave me a room he said had a great view. Turns out he gave me a non-suite with a view of a parking garage and a key that didn’t work. I can back down and there was a group checking in while Brett was gone and another team member milled around messing with water bottles rather than help. After 10 mins, Alexa gave me a new key. When I got up to the room I called down to ask why this wasn’t a suite. She informed me that Brett had given away my room and didn’t even make a rate change downward. There is no manager on duty. Overall, I haven’t experienced such piss poor service and an attitude that I screwed something up - not them. Do not stay.
