Our stay at Schoone Oordt was truly exceptional. The bedrooms are beautifully appointed, with all the five-star amenities you could wish for, creating a wonderfully comfortable and luxurious experience. The four-course breakfast was something I had never experienced before and was absolutely outstanding. Dinner was equally impressive, exceeding our expectations in every way. What really makes Schoone Oordt special, though, is the staff. They are genuinely warm, attentive and lovely, adding those extra thoughtful touches that elevate the entire experience. A truly memorable stay at a beautiful property
We had a fantastic stay at this beautiful hotel. We were only there for one night whilst travelling from Cape Town to Plettenburg Bay, but from the minute we arrived we were made to feel so welcome. All the staff were so attentive, the food was great (the scones are delicious!) and our room was amazing. Thank you for making our stay so enjoyable!
Everything was gorgeous! Comfortable and classy room. I had a fireplace in my room and a stunning bathtub.
What an amazing experience to have stayed at this Country House. Sadly it was just an overnight stop en route to Knysna. The entire experience from arrival to departure was filled with lovely helpful staff, wonderful historic surroundings done with such class. The rooms were so welcoming and comfortable. The dining experience was absolutely first class with attentive happy staff. Thank you Alison and your staff for a memorable stay.
Everything was amazing from the moment we drove through the gate until the time we left. Would highly recommend a stay at this beautiful historic Country House
الاسرة مريحة والمكان نظيف والمطعم راقي للإفطار والطعام لذيذ المكان رايق وآمن وكان توقف لي استراحة قبل التوجه إلى كنيسنا.
This is a must for those on the Garden route. A very warm welcome when we arrived, the house and rooms have a homely feel with a lovely ambiance. The food and service was outstanding. Well done to Alison and her team.
Comfortable rooms with a roaring fire in the fire place and warm water bottle in bed - you can only sleep well ! Delicious Dinner as well as gourmet breakfast . Excellent position walking distance from the Saturday market , the Museum and the shops and Restaurants, but still tucked away in an exquisite garden filled with Koi Fish and birds. Very peaceful .
Wonderful little hotel, food is amazing, service was flawless and everybody went out their way to make you feel welcome. Great hotel would 100% recommend
Definitely worth the money! We really enjoyed the decor and ambience of the hotel. The staff were great at helping us out. The attention to detail in the room was probably my favourite thing. The toiletries and flowers. Amazing! It is very close to the tourist part of Swellendam, some of the best shops are in walking distance. Let's not forget about the food and wine selection! Great for that special occasion when you want to splurge a bit.
We had used a travel agent to help us develop our itinerary in South Africa, which had a very limited duration before we continued onto Safari in Zambia. She had suggested Swellendam and in particular the Schoone Oordt house. It was a unique small town that has a wonderful small national park near it as well as a wildlife area that has trails not for the faint of heart. However, the star was the lodging. From the moment that we drove in and were welcomed to when we left the next day in our freshly washed car. Welcome: we were met by two staff who showed us dorextly to our room where we Kyle settle in prior to registering in the lovely bar/library. Grounds: spectacularly maintained and quiet. Room: large and well appointed with a fireplace ready to have for lit (June was very cold at night). Local wines and craft beer in the min fridge to trim down at night with hot water bottles in our bed. Shower was wonderful and lots of reading materials and place to sit. The library/bar was next to dining which was in the conservatory. The story of its restoration and dedication of the hosts was apparent in every detail (plus they have an awesome book to read about that as well as local things to do). The service was exceptional and food most excellent. We did eat dinner in and I highly suggest the bed and board for breakfast. Sadly we were in our way again the next morning and did an epic early morning hike. A word to US travelers-a moderate rating in SA is more of a black run than a blue!
We wish we had stayed an extra night, as we were made to feel so welcome. The hotel is lovely, a real labour of love from the husband and wife team that run it. Food was excellent- both breakfast and dinner - after wonderful food in Cape Town we were expecting to be a little disappointed but this was really good. Lovely room, open fire with hot water bottles in bed when we got back from dinner. A lovely traditional building that has been painstakingly renovated and is a real treat. Definitely worth spending a couple of nights here.
I really enjoyed staying at Schoone Oordt - the personal approach in this family-run hotel, and genuine care of the owner Alison and her team were special! The highlights for me were a roaring fireplace and a dinner platter waiting for me in my room, upon arrival after a long drive. And waking up to my vehicle washed and pampered after hours on dusty Karoo roads! The hotel is lovely and elegant, and also perfectly positioned to explore Swellendam on foot. Alison also holds dinners and special events, such as murder mystery adventure dinners, at her hotel that I wish to one day attend! I can only recommend it!
Despite the fact that they were in the middle of clearing up to debris from a major storm (trees down on the premises and much of the surrounding area (but not the hotel) without power and closed for business, the staff were fantastic. The little things that make a difference - fresh scones on arrival, car washed next morning (without asking), and the wood fire in the room (lit and then banked up while we were at dinner). Dinner menu (though not large) was superb as was breakfast. Advice on where to go walking (national parks were still closed) made the following morning memorable. All in all a truly amazing experience. Highly recommended.
Beautiful hotel., the staff are wonderful and the hospitality was second to none. Well appointed room , everything you’d need to make your stay perfect. Take an adapter if you’re from the Uk. There is a good hairdryer provided and plug sockets are near the mirrors Breakfast was a pleasure and washing the car was an extra treat Thank you for a wonderful stay
A beautiful boutique hotel. Large rooms, very comfortable. The food in the restaurant was superb, and so were the staff, Carel and Michelle. Going out of their way to make sure all needs are met. We also met the owner and she is just as amazing. Only mistake we made, was to stay for just one night. Swellendam is a lovely little town. Next time we will add an extra night.
Staying here was an experience. An experience of warmth, quality and passion. We felt this was our best stay during our garden route drive. Thank you for thinking about the “small things” which made a real difference. And thanking you for making us feel special celebrating our wedding anniversary. Highly recommended

Zouden hier zo weer boeken – of zelfs langer blijven.
We had only one night at Schoone Oordt Country House but what a stay! From the moment we arrived we were treated like old friends and made to feel very welcome. The accommodation is luxurious and indulgent, attention to detail is perfect. Loved the cafetiere for coffee in our room and the afternoon drinks by the pool. Dinner was perfect and the atmosphere was like an old fashioned house party. Breakfast was on another level, a feast meaning no lunch required. All topped off as we watched our car being washed before departure. Alison is a delight and already feels like an old friend. If we make it back to South Africa we wouldn't hesitate to stay again.
Prachtig ingericht en mooie sfeer
A gem This place is fabulous The staff are amazing and the rooms and gardens a delight The bedding is the best ! The afternoon tea was a pleasant treat We sadly did not eat there but if breakfast is anything to judge then just book to eat Breakfast was a gourmet meal in the conservatory Would love to have stayed longer Cannot fault it Talking to the owners was a bonus they were so nice
Excellent stay in quaint Swellendam. The property is classy, the food is excellent and the staff go out of their way to make your stay a delight. Our car was even washed withgout us asking for it! Very highly recommended.
Nothing to dislike
Excellent stay in quaint Swellendam. The property is classy, the food is excellent and the staff go out of their way to make your stay a delight. Very highly recommended.
What a stunning place to stay, the rooms were beautifully appointed, the food was delicious and the warm welcome from Alison and her staff made us feel as if we've come home. Absolutely loved our brief sat at Schoone Oordt and we will most certainly be back.
Amazing hospitality from staff and Alison especially as we had arrived in not very good health suffering from a bad virus picked up in Cape town some days earlier. Very understanding and considerate to us. A truly tranquil house and location highly recommended would certainly return again.
What an amazing space Alison and Richard have created at Schoone Oordt. The main house has been beautifully renovated and the separate room we stayed in was gorgeous. Dinner was the most amazing meal and the service was exceptional. One of our party is coeliac and they made a point of acknowledging this each time we ate, which gave us great confidence, and they were happy amend the dishes as necessary although this in no way affected the amazing quality and taste of the food. Alison and Richard took the time to chat with us and it was lovely to hear their story about how they have created both a family home and amazing guest house. Swellendam is a lovely little town to visit and we could not recommend more highly a stay and dinner at Schoone Oordt.
Super Küche und extrem nettes Personal!
Freundliches Personal und Gastgeberin, sehr gutes Essen, schöner Garten, hier werden auch die Autos gewaschen,
Just the one night here unfortunately on the way down to the Garden route but so much more than just a stopover and we wish we had been able to stay longer. We were made to feel so welcome by all the staff from the minute we arrived . We had been suffering with a stomach bug since leaving Cape Town so reluctantly declined what looked to be some fantastic dinner options. However we were offered a simple salmon trout dish with rice and vegetables that was perfect for our “delicate” condition. Likewise , whilst we had to temper our breakfasts options, it is not to be missed - you will not need lunch but you can of course return for the complimentary afternoon warm scones! The house and grounds are beautiful and our room was lovely. Our car was even washed before we left in the morning! Highly recommended
It was a brief but very enjoyable stay. We had dinner in the conservatory every course was wonderful. We were taken aback by the 3 course breakfast which was lovely and light. Throughout our stay all the staff were very attentive and looked after us wonderfully.
Loved its luxury, charm, service, incredible dinner, and breakfast, the no tipping policy, (all staff get equal share of 12.5% service charge), there is a feeling of inclusion. The only reservation is it is a challenge for those with mobility issues to navigate, but 100% recommend on all other fronts.
We loved everything about this small boutique hotel. The restoration and decor was stunning . Food absolutely amazing atmosphere in the restaurant beautiful Alison and Richard can’t thank you enough for a wonderful stay .you are a lovely couple .
We stayed overnight on our way to the eastern cape. I can’t praise it highly enough . From the gorgeous scones waiting for us on arrival to the staff member washing our car! Food was amazing. If you are in the area, stay there !
Having visited for dinner in 2025, we decided to stay 2 nights at Schoone Ordt. Swellendam is a lovely little town and a grest place to break up the journey from Cape Town to the places in the east of the Garden Route. Especially of note is the food. It is quite simply fabulous. A short menu (choice of 4 dishes for each course) always instills confidence that the chef is extremely capable. And so it proved. Everything we ate was fantastic. Also the wines are all locally sourced and they were spectacular too. All the staff were wonderful - led by the charming Alison. We will definitely go back when in Swellendam.
The main house, especially the lounge area, is really beautiful with lots of character. Our room was comfortable and spacious.
Dinner at Schoone was totally amazing. Incredibly tasty starters, and “off the Richter scale mains”. All were fantastic and delicious to the last morsel, and beautifully and artistically presented. Well worth a foodie’s visit.
Excellent all round. Good food, great atmosphere and super staff.
This is a must, the most amazing welcome, food and surroundings. Alison and Richard have put there heart and soul into making this the most wonderful restful, but energising stay, Nothing was too much trouble, accommodating needs above and beyond, it really feels like your staying at your best friend’s home, This by far was our special place during our garden route trip. It is a must visit, “simply good for your soul,, Thank you Alison and Richard x
From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, Joany and the rest of the staff were so attentive and welcoming . The hotel was so clean and the rooms very comfy would of loved to of stayed longer but we had a long journey ahead . Would highly recommend if you want a colonial stay in a fabulous warm homely place . Everything home made from the biscuts to the lovley scones . Yum yum . Mr and Mrs Les and Michelle West .
Beautiful country house that felt like stepping back to period in time. Set in its own grounds, with outdoor pool and gardens. The bedrooms and the dining room were superb.
Nothing not to to like
gibt nichts......
Bin n Vegetarier. Das Abendessen war super lecker
Friendly owners and staff who could not have done more for us. Food was exceptional.
A last minute booking for my wife and her friend. They both say the the standard was excellent at every level. The standard is extremely high with wonderful staff Thank you
Staff, service, rooms, dining and breakfast all of the highest order. When looking for a top quality hotel experience in Swellendam look no further. Our 4th visit and looking to our next.
The atmosphere of thios historic building is amazing. Rooims very comfortable and food excellent. Is this the best breakfast in the Western Cape. Staff totally professional and attentive. Stayed many times - comning back next year
As always, fabulous. Alison and Richard and staff are wonderful hosts. Our room was traditional and we love the roll top bath. Food is outstanding, dinner and breakfast, and this time we allowed ourselves time to chill by the pool one afternoon, it's quite the oasis
Brilliant staff, friendly helpful Incredible food Knowledgeable waiting staff Just blissful
Fantastic hotel! Fantastic food and wine! Fantastic staff ! Only wish we could have stayed longer!! The hotel was charming especially the dining room!!
We spent a wonderful one night stay on the way to Franschoek ( most itineraries suggested this) and we couldn’t have felt more at home. Thank you to Alison and her team ; the whole stay was a food fest that I will never forget! Each dish is lovingly prepared, presented and is delicious! This also reflects each element of this boutique hotel: wine, food, ambience, swimming pool- sun loungers, gardens, toiletries etc were all great. Treat yourself and stay here! You won’t regret it!
Alles war super! Ausstattung super! Sehr geringe Deko mit Herzblut. Persönliche und zuvorkommende Bedienung. Ein tolles Team. Danke
This delightful, well run hotel in a lovely part of Swellendam was a joy to visit. We were immediately made to feel very welcome by Joannie who offered us tea and scones before being taken to our room which was perfect. It was spotlessly clean with beautiful bedlinen and everything we needed and we had a wonderful nights sleep. We were served a delicious dinner in the evening and the breakfast was equally excellent and plenty of it! Nothing was too much trouble for anyone and Alison, the owner, couldn’t have been more helpful when we needed to find a doctor. The hotel itself is a beautiful building set in a lovely garden with a swimming pool and plenty of places to sit. One of the nicest hotels in our three week trip. Finally, thanks go to Charles, who not only carried our cases to the room but also cleaned our very dusty car on the morning we left. We look forward to a return visit.
We arrived at this beautifully restored Georgian house after a two hour drive from Franschhoek and were greeted by Joanie’s lovely smile and shown to our room without any official form filling to settle in and asked to join them on the veranda for drinks . We unpacked and headed over to do the official stuff, taking in the view of the beautiful fountains and the Koi swimming in the pond on the grounds . The house is breathtaking and you feel swept back in time while you sit and admire the restoration . Alison came to say hello and made us feel so welcome ! Confirming our dinner reservations and checking we were happy with the menu ( perfection!) Dinner at 730 was excellent , faultless except too much food ! Sat in the conservatory by an open window taking in the view of the grounds . We stayed in the family cottage with a traditional en-suite bathroom , fluffy towels and robes plus high quality toiletries . Bed and bedding superb !! We slept like logs and breakfast the following morning was a gourmet affair , we were moving on sadly but enjoyed every minute of our short stay and would highly recommend this gem of a place with its incredible style , excellent friendly service and exceptional food !!
A beautiful small hotel . Delicious food. Lovely rooms with great attention to detail . Charming hosts . Perfect location to break up the drive from Cape Town to Plettenbug.
Incredible breakfast and dinner
Beautiful surroundings. Well appointed comfortable room. Charming staff
This is a bit picky but hey its feedback Had a cheeseboard for 2 but it was a little thin on the ground....looked like it was for one
Excellent food but the room is not-as good. A little bit old, dark, bathroom requires update .
The rooms ! And the welcome service.
We spent our last night in South Africa here; we were booked in by our travel agent, and were delighted with this selection. We found it excellent and exceptionally good value - the room, the staff, the food and wine and the overall ambience. Our hostess was very welcoming and charming, too. We would so much have liked to spend another night there. However, it meant that we left South Africa on a high.
We spent 4 nights at Schoone Oordt and it was special. The rooms are beautifully and stylishly decorated, and every detail has been thought about. The breakfasts and dinners in the conservatory are superb and all the staff are friendly and knowledgable. It was very hot when we stayed there, and it's wonderful to be able to take a swim in the pool after a hot day out. Alison was very helpful with reccomendations for things to do closer to and also slightly further from Swellendam. A day trip to De Hoop Nature Reserve is really nice to do if you're staying a couple of days. Definitely reccomend staying here if you want to spoil yourself!
It's our fifth visit (we book each year on our road trip across SA) and each time have found the experience doesn't disappoint - in fact we feel more connected with each visit. The service, food, facilities are all excellent with the owners always displaying a passion for what they do.
Sfeervol, lokatie en het eten. Oog voor detail
Nice hotel and evening meal
Wonderful, try to stay for at least three nights as it is a great base to do a wide range of things - wine tasting , golfing, hiking, shopping, driving through mountains, etc
Schoone Oordt is a beautiful setting. We were welcomed with scones, the room was very comfortable with everything you could need, has great style including fresh flowers and a truffle each on the bed, and a private veranda. The quality of dinner and breakfast were second to none. Great detail was given to presentation. We loved sitting at the bi-fold windows which were open looking over the garden. All of the staff were so pleasant and helpful. Our car was even washed. Our only regret is that we had not booked to stay longer. Thank you for one of the highlights of our holiday. Mervyn & Sharon Storey, Ireland.
Alison was really helpful as i got my dates wrong and she helped me sort this out. responded quickly as well. breakfast was good.
it really didnt feel 5 star. Pool area, rooms, location and actual property is def not 5 Star! im sorry but it just isnt. was an expensive stay and really did not feel worth it. we wont be back unfortunatley.
Es ist alles schön gepflegt. Traumhafte Küche. Super freundlich. Dankeschön
Wahnsinnig schönes altes Herrenhaus mit sehr viel Liebe geführt. Alle Wünsche wurden erfüllt, alle so super nett. Essen unglaublich lecker! Drei Gänge zum Frühstück :) Es gab im Zimmer sogar Kinder Spielsachen und am nächsten Morgen wurde unser Auto geputzt!!
We enjoyed our 3 days stay very much. Quiet room with cozy veranda, a few steps to the pool with lovely chairs and shade. Super breakfast and top fine dining with a vast choice of good wines, lovely ambiance and service.
Nichts, es war perfekt!
The food and service here is exceptional. They go out of their way to be hospitable and out of a nearly 3 week holiday travelling across South Africa and Mauritius, the best food I ate of the whole trip was here. I'm still thinking about the mushroom risotto at dinner. And the grapes with breakfast! Also a shout out to the roobois martini! The property is also stunning, it was the most comfortable bed of our trip, and a dip in the saltwater pool in the morning felt special.
My only regret was not staying longer!
I just wrapped up an amazing stay at Schoone Oordt Country House in Swellendam, and I can honestly say South Africa continues to impress me with the quality of boutique hotels. This property is no exception. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel right at home by the owner, Alison, who is an exceptional host and her amazing team. The rooms are truly 5-star quality—elegant, comfortable, and impeccably maintained. The resort is lush and peacfull and a great pool to complete the package. We had an unforgettable dinner, where I tried the local rabbit—absolutely outstanding! The breakfast the next morning was beyond anything you'd expect from a 5-star hotel, served in a beautiful conservatory overlooking the meticulously manicured gardens. Overall, I can't recommend this place enough. I’d give them more than 5 stars if I could. A huge thank you to Alison and her wonderful team. We’ll definitely be back soon! (Paul and Liam Micallef)
We recently moved on from a four night stay at Schoone Oordt. Room 8 is away from the main building, with lovely furnishings, large bathroom with separate tub and rainshower. There is a small seating area and comfortable terrace not far from the swimming pool. The staff are fabulous and well trained although we did not get to meet owners Alison and Richard as they were away on a well deserved break before the Christmas rush. Breakfast is a multi course affair, we actually prefer buffets but we enjoyed the offering by and large. The Conservatory Restaurant serves excellent food, certainly as good as you can get in Swellendam and should be rated in its own right We never sampled the afternoon tea on the verandah as there was ample supply in the room. One point to note is that the steps up and down to the restaurant are quite steep so take care especially when it is wet. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, would certainly return if we are in Swellendam and have already recommended it to colleagues.
What a lovely place to stay, we only had 1 night, but from the moment you arrive you are looked after by Alison and the staff (Lulu). The food was amazing for both Breakfast and dinner, plus we were lucky enough to be staying when there was a tasting session by a local distillery (Whisky & Gin), which was a nice touch pre-dinner.
Nothing
Owner and staff were exceptionally welcoming, friendly and informative. The food was fantastic.
Had a wonderful one night stay during our Garden Route trip, highly recommend this wonderful historic guest house. Pure luxury bedroom and bathroom, incredible local food ( best we have had so far!) and kind , attentive staff. Perfect for a stroll around lovely Swellendam .
Delicious food!!!
Spent an overnight here on our way to the Garden Route. It was just intended to provide a respite from driving, but turned into a great experience. The grounds are splendid and provide a splendid refuge of calm after a busy day. The meals are fantastic and the owner and staff all made us feel really welcome. Took a trip to Bontebok National Park and that is well worth a visit too when you are in the Swellendam area.
Swellendam is a gorgeous little town and Schoone Oordt Country House is a gem of a retreat after a long trip. I really wish that our itinerary allowed us to stay for 2 nights. If anyone doing the garden route is unsure about how long to stay, either travelling from Plett direction or from CT direction, you really should consider 2 nights rather than 1. The conservatory restaurant was phenomenally food, wine expertly advised and vegetarian catered for no problem at all (mushroom risotto was 10/10). Breakfast was a real treat. My first time experiencing courses for breakfast! The rooms are gorgeous, the staff so welcoming and friendly. Thanks Alison, Charlie, Carel and everyone else at Schoone Oordt.
We had a one night stay here whilst on route. The guest house is located at the end of the old town, great location. Set in its own private grounds with a swimming pool and fish pond with a difference!! We were welcomed by the staff and offered scones and jam as part of the check in, lovely touch. We stayed in the family cottage - very spacious with its own roof patio. Lovely roof, amazing bed - best night sleep in years!! We booked in for tgr evening meal - first class and a lovely setting in the conservatory. Next day - breakfast time, 3 course breakfast with choices - again lovely and please allow time to enjoy. The guest house has private secure parking. I must highlight the great hospitality across their whole team - the owner Alison is a true character who clearly loves welcoming everyone - thank you. Good WiFi available. Little gem tugged away - if you passing don’t miss this one
Beautiful traditional old country house perfectly maintained in a lovely garden . Great restaurant for dinner with good food and wines from local winery’s and very good breakfast . Very friendly and kind staff.
We were in the honeymoon suite. Beautiful and spacious room but too dark for my personal preference .
My wife and I stayed here as part of an 8 day driving journey from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town via the Garden Route. Unfortunately our itinerary only allowed for a single nights stay. We wish we had stayed here longer and here's why. On arrival we were greeted by several friendly staff, who were all very welcoming. We were supplied with complimentary scones, butter, cream and jam, and offered some tea, although as it was so hot we chose cold drinks. The homemade scones were amazing. We stayed in the family cottage which was in the grounds a few yards away from the main building. Everything was just perfect - the attention to detail with the little things was wonderful. The cottage was clean and the bed was extremely comfortable. There was also additional facilities, including a sink, a microwave, and a fridge containing water and fresh milk for the tea and coffee provided. The grounds were immaculate and we found it very comfortable relaxing on the spaced out loungers around the pool. Whilst we didn't eat dinner at the restaurant (due to having over eaten for the previous 2+weeks :-) ) the menu did look amazing and if the massive 3 course breakfast is anything to go by, then I'm sure we wouldn't have been disappointed. The quality and quantity of the breakfast was exceptional! This was our first time in SA and when we return again we will 100% be staying for longer at this wonderful accommodation, so that we can make proper use of all the facilities - the bar, the restaurant, the gardens and the pool. Alison, the owner was charming and made us feel very welcome in her home. Can't wait to revisit.
