Location, the quirky artwork, large rooms. Helpful friendly staff.
Spongy bed.
The location is perfect, right in the heart of Chester which is ideal! The decor is beautiful and very quirky I loved the bath tub in the room. The staff were lovely upon check in and check out.
I stayed in the Caldecott cottage, there was an awful sewage smell coming out of the sink in the bathroom, the bed was so uncomfortable and I truly can sleep on anything! I’ve slept in comfier beds in hostels. There was also a loud sound through out the night it sounded like a pump and it made it so hard to settle. This was just my experience however, I know plenty of people that have enjoyed staying at this hotel maybe it was just that one room that wasn’t great!
Amazing breakfast
The Cocktail barman was lovely. The Banoffee Martini was the best cocktail I have ever had
Got off to a disappointing start when the Receptionist insisted I had only booked 1 room (not 2). My single booking of 2 rooms via booking.com was bizarrely split up so when my niece's room was finally found on the system it was considered a separate booking (which is not true). We were also put in two completely different parts of the building. Booking.com took the payment 3 days before arrival. I understand cancellation fees for no shows but taking the payment this far in advance is excessive. Multiple plugs by the coffee machine in Room 1 were in a plug adaptor which I was surprised by. Getting an electrician to put some plug sockets on the wall is a small job. Lots of milk, green tea and coffee pods however only 1 English Breakfast teabag in each room. Pepper Street Car Park (even at half price due to being a hotel guest) is a horrid place and maybe shouldn't be recommended. People with big cars did well to be able to park in those tiny 1963 bays.
Friendly staff and lovely comfort able hotel
Quirky and interesting design, comfortable rooms.
Fabulous quirky hotel
Warm welcome from staff, very comfortable bed and great location.
Good central location for exploring Chester and parking was a bonus.
Tired in places especially the bathrooms
Location was super, decor was quirky and fun, bar area was great with a really good selection of drinks and cocktails, some themed, room was fantastic
Liked everything
Fabulous hotel...thanks to Ian and Karina for making our stay special..we took our dog Major so welcomed by the staff...food lovely especially the roast on Sunday..Rooms excellent A/C was much needed..thanks to all hard working staff..we will visit again..all in all brilliant hotel
Nothing to improve
The room for a disabled person was one of the best most suitable one I have come across in a lot of hotel stays, well thought through
Great location. Bar area brilliant
Too expensive. Rooms need some work
Rooms were nice and decor was good
Would prefer carpeted rooms and conditioner in shower. Food was a bit expensive on afternoon
Its location and style !!
Nothing
delightfully quirky, a wonderland style without being an Alice homage. Sunday dinner was delicious Beds were very comfortable parking was easy, close and with a good reduction for guests a great base for exploring Chester gave your day a sense of fun
staff were occasionally less engaged than you wanted only one meat available for Sunday dinner toilet arrangements in the bedroom were not what we are used to
Good location, comfy bed, interesting looking bar area but it was a Tuesday so very very quiet.
For some unknown reason we were given a disabled room, it was a Tuesday night so the place wasnt busy but seemed a bit strange to be allocated this room. We didnt bother to question it as I'd got a good genius rate and we were dashing out to meet friends, but it would put me off staying here again. Its a faff having to dry off the toilet seat and surrounding areas after having a shower, the water didnt want to go down the plug quickly either so the showers had to be quick to avoid it flooding out into the room. We did report that on leaving so hope it got looked at?
Lovely quirky hotel great location and not too noisy.
The only thing I didn’t like Before we arrived I had communicated with the hotel it was our anniversary during our stay. They said the room would have some extra special touches when we arrived. Box of chocolates.. champagne and rose petals. Unfortunately nothing was in the room when we arrived but not to worry as we still enjoyed our stay.
Breakfast was good,location excellent
Came back to the hotel one evening stood at the bar to get a drink ,after 5 minutes I gave up no staff about.last morning went to check out no staff again.Disapointed to find out we couldn't get a meal on Monday our Tuesday evening.could do with a bit more choice at breakfast.
Good location, vibrant hotel and really good breakfast
A wonderful hotel that's perfectly positioned to see the sights Chester has to offer. The staff were most helpful & the breakfast was lovely. Cars need to be parked at a nearby multistorey but the hotel offers a 50% reduction on the charges.
All good & no complaints.
Great location and very spacious! Would defo stay again. Only complaint was blinds needed a dust.
Blinds dusty
Everything.
There was no kettel there and cups to have a cupe of tea.
Location, cost, secret garden
The room we were in, TV kept going light and dark all the time it was on, some of the channels weren’t working (main channels like ITV) just kept saying week signal, there was a stain on the bottom of the bed quilt cover (covered with the throw) looks like a cup of tea stain which would have come out if it was washed so I’m not convinced they were washed before our stay. Some of the staff were very pleasant but there were also staff that weren’t, the way they were with us when we were ordering food and drinks from a customer service point of view felt like they just didn’t want to be there or were having a bad day. The hinges on the shower door in the room look a mess, the toilet seat was very loose and the tap was also loose. I could go on but I will leave it at that.
Early check in - our room was ready prior to official checkin time. Our room was clean and quiet
See through bathroom to bedroom glass wall
Funky , quirky and just different to any other hotel we have stayed in Chester
Nothing we loved it
Brilliant hotel. Pity we only stayed one night as I would have like to stay in the garden for a while. But overall very enjoyable and cool...
Nothing it was great 👍
- very eclectic decor - comfortable bed - great location - very nice breakfast - air con in the room which we were grateful for given the heatwave
- we stayed in room 11; I felt it needed a good deep clean. There was quite a bit of dust everywhere including the walls and sides. The carpet also had bits and sparkly bits on when we arrived (?old decoration) - arrived for breakfast and waited a good while and no one arrived so my husband had to enter the kitchen to notify them of our arrival - not necessarily the fault of the hotel but we were awoken at 07.30-07.45 with a lorry unloading items by our window so it interrupted our sleep - a very loud buzzing in the room; not sure what the source of this was
Quirky decorations
Steps
Set right in the city centre
Great location, fabulous vibe during the day. Room configuration great
Room was dated. Really overpriced for the quality of the room. Water marks on the ceiling that could have been painted for the pricing. Cleaning not great, light fittings dirty and cobwebs on the staircase. For the cost the attention to details was very poor.
Decor of room and public areas exceptional.
Nothing
The rooms and the hotel decor are wonderful - so unique and different from most hotels. The secret garden is a wonderful place to have a drink and the Hugo Spritz was 10/10! The bed was very comfortable, there was a Nespresso coffee machine and my room in bottom of the Garden end was so quiet ! The staff were also lovely.
Nothing
Great location, bedroom was spacious, clean and bed really comfortable. Staff were really friendly and helpful and breakfast was excellent.
Nothing
The staff are exceptional. Attentive, helpful, nothing too much trouble. The atmosphere is very good with plenty of different zones and funky decors. Particularly liked the bar and secret garden. Very competitively priced especially compared with Liverpool where a much inferior hotel cost almost double
Machine sound (air conditioning? Generator?) in bedroom was continuous and a bit obtrusive. We also prefer windows that open to hermetically sealed rooms. Not much natural light in bedroom
Location: right in the heart of Chester Convenient parking. Space in the apartment. Ease of check-in.
Lack of cleanliness - advertised as serviced apartments, the cleaner only emptied the bins, dressed beds and changed the towels daily. Floors were very dirty (not vacuumed or cleaned for the week!). No vacuum or sweeping brush provided to do it ourself. Whole apartment needs a refresh. Dishwasher stank when opened initially. not properly managed (salts etc) despite asking for same. Lots of appliances not working (fan, lamps). No iron/iron board provided despite having a utility room. Only one set of keys provided for 2 adults. We could not travel on the first day, over 1 month noticed provided, and they would not refund that night, despite it being our 3rd consecutive year staying there.
We had an absolutely fantastic stay at Oddfellows. The room was brilliant, and the bath in the room was a real highlight. The hotel has such a unique atmosphere and a really cool vibe that makes it feel different from your typical hotel. The on-site bar was excellent, breakfast was delicious, and the location couldn’t have been better for exploring Chester. The biggest standout, though, was the staff. They were all incredibly friendly and went above and beyond after finding out we’d just got engaged, which made our stay even more memorable. Their kindness really made the weekend feel extra special.
Very little, to be honest. If I had to pick anything, the sofa in the room wasn’t particularly comfortable, and the pillows weren’t really to our liking, which affected our sleep a little. They’re only minor points, though, and they certainly wouldn’t stop us from staying again.
Breakfast was fab, location couldn't be better.
Didn't like the stairs
What a fabulous place. Staff were friendly decor was brilliant. We stayed during the heatwave so walking up to our room we were very apprehensive about the heat but the room had welcome air conditioning!! Food in the restaurant was delicious and well presented. Would stay again and again!
Lovely quirky hotel
Room could do with a but of touching up - tiles lifting arounf shower, sofa very worn etc
Check in was easy, we had an apartment short walk from hotel!! Apartment was fab everythig we needed
Sofa bed was really uncomftable, really needs a thicker matteress on there or maybe a topper
Quirky. The best shower. Great location and good value
The artwork everywhere was wonderful. The room was comfortable and the meals were excellent. The hotel is within easy walking distance of the shopping and dining area of town and the two mile Roman Wall walk.
Had afternoon tea in a private dining room for a family/friends event. It just felt dirty! Dusty chairs, horrible stale smell, bits on carpet, mainly deflated balloon for previous event stuck up on the ceiling… Food nothing extra- probably didn’t enjoy as the unclean room made me question how clean kitchen was!
The location of the hotel was perfect, just a minute walk from the main street of shops. The hotel was quirky with the decoration, which we liked. We had a small issue with a lightbulb, which wasnt a big problem, but they moved us rooms to a better upgraded room for the the inconvenience, which was really nice of them and above what we expected. Breakfast was nice. There was a bar inside and seating outside which was nice to have both options, all both nicely decorated also.
We had afternoon tea here, we gave it a solid 4/5. We requested for the sandwiches to be changed ever so slightly which was granted. They were great, particularly the coronation chicken. The scones were good. We didn’t love the brownies -they seemed to be overridden with coffee which was a shame. The profiteroles and lemon cake were the favourite for us! We also asked for some pina colada type cocktail which were 10/10! Definitely recommend! Would absolutely return 🙂
Location Staff are amazing

very quirky hotel, great atmosphere and lovely garden and bar areas
nothing
Room was very nice, very spacious and the bed was really comfortable
Location was perfect just a lot of steps
There was no parking and although we was in the hotel out 16 friends were staying in the apartments the night after and car park empty don’t see why I couldn’t have put my car there . It cos £20 to park in multi story car park for 12 hours .also was a little odd that we asked for twin beds but was given a room with a bath in the bedroom neither could use ! We booked the stay in march .
In the centre of the city. The hotel is quirky and fun. Loved the interior decor. Staff friendly.
Quirkiness if thedrvor and the good staff.
No marmalade to go with the toast. B
The hotel has a beautiful relaxed feel to it. Immaculately clean, feels quite boutique with beautiful decor. The bed was really comfortable with comfy pillows. The breakfast was really good, there was lots of choice on the menu, we had the full English which was plentiful and very tasty! Staff are all really friendly, check in was fast and efficient. We have stayed in chester a few times and this is by far our favourite hotel.
Nothing to not like, our stay was perfect!
Everything was great. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. Comfortable bed so a good nights sleep and a good breakfast.
Nothing
Die Lage und der große Restaurant- und Barbereich sind super
Die Matratze war sehr sehr weich, bei jeder Bewegung des Bettnachbarn wachte man auf.
Fantastic room, we were upgraded which was lovely! Staff were friendly and helpfull. Location brilliant.
Rooms need redecorating… the bathroom door was awful, glass , I don’t really want to see my partner sat on the toilet thank you. A decent coffee tray in the room with good quality items would be better than the awful coffee machine. Staff were lovely though . Not value for money .
Good location, nice front of house staff.
Rooms were old with no usb ports - for those wanting up-to date extras this is a no-go. The room was also cramped with an oddly placed bath within the already cramped room. We were also not made aware that it was a disabled room with accessible equipment in the bathroom. There was no vanity mirror on the dressing table. There were ants all over the room, on the dresser and side tables, crawling on the bed, and all over the floor. Bed was two singles put together that made a substantial gap. Pillows wear awful - so badly stuffed it almost felt like cotton wool balls rather than pillow stuffing, and bed covers weren’t very warm. However it was clean.
Much more spacious than I expected. Great location
Quite dark inside and the sofa bed was completely wonky. Our guest who was supposed to sleep on the sofa bed just slept on the other sofa.
Very modern
The room was great and the staff super friendly
Nothing not to like
Great location and well appointed room
I thought it was a little toppy at £320 for the night
Location perfect for shops, restaurants & racecourse.
There is nothing not to like.
Rooms were clean, beds are really comfortable, enjoyed our stay,
Loved the quirkyness of this hotel. The room was very comfortable and quiet. The breakfast was lovely. The secret garden is a gem. Very central and a 50% discount for the Pepper street car park just down the road.
Called yesterday for Sunday lunch , all staff lovely ! Starters took over an hour to come out we had to ask for mains at same time as we had a coach to catch . Staff said it was because they had another party of 37 that’s why service was very slow . They shouldn’t have let us book a table if they couldn’t manage . Starters lovely ! Mains cold !
Everything
Nothing!
Location great Was able to check in earlier Good large space for the amount of people Tea and coffee available The bedrooms were very spacious and beds comfortable
The apartments you can tell have been used it was very worn in the bathrooms and walls. The floor was filthy feet were black. we had a sofa bed that was for 2 people but could only fit 1 person so i had to sleep on the couch and the mattress on that was about 5cm , could feel the springs. And it collapsed underneath us. There was damp and water damage on the ceiling Not great for value of money, Needs an update
Large apartment, well enough for 4 adults.
Location, although not too far description was nit clear that apartment was not part if the Oddfelliws hotel. Front bedroom noisy,as near main road.
Waited a long time for breakfast
We stayed in a two-bedroom apartment on Duke Street. It's in an ideal, lovely location, with great, roomy parking right outside. The apartment itself was spacious, which we appreciated, but it is in need of refurbishment. The carpet was dirty, the toilet seat was broken, and the taps just twizzled round, which made them awkward to use. There were also a few basic touches missing. There was no milk for tea or coffee and no bottled water. The apartments were tricky to find as well. Although it said check-in information would explain where they were, an online map and an email confirming when payment would be taken would have been much more courteous and helpful. Payment was taken three days before arrival, even though the booking said cancellation was allowed up to 24 hours before check-in, which didn’t feel very clear. Breakfast was disappointing for the price. It was just one hot meal or yoghurt with granola, rather than a normal hotel breakfast with things like toast, pastries, or cereal. Overall, it felt expensive for what it was. That said, the location was lovely and we did like the apartment’s size, so I would stay again, but only if it was on a special offer.
The staff were amazing and so was the breakfast.
Some of the wall paper needs to replacing in the rooms.
The location
Stayed in the 3 bedroom apartment as part of a last minute break to Chester with two of our children. We stayed in the same apartment a few years ago and remember thinking at the time it needed some money spending on it. When we booked it recently we had hoped that may have happened over the course of the past few years, but unfortunately it hasn’t. The last time we stayed in the duplex room in the main hotel, we also thought the same. Just looked tired and old. The price we paid for the apartment was reasonable at only around £200, but I’ve seen this apartment in summer for over £500/£600. I’d be extremely disappointed paying that once I’d seen it. The fixtures and fittings are old and worn. The toilet seat is broken. The main bathroom door doesn’t close properly. The cups and glasses in the kitchen etc don’t match. There is one nice sofa in the apartment and the other one looks like it has been bought off Facebook marketplace for about £30 and just felt dirty and cheap. The furniture in the bedrooms is cheap ikea flat pack painted to be quirky. The fridge has the shelf missing so you can’t put any drinks in there upright, so if you have opened a bottle of wine, you can’t put it back in the fridge. The TV in the bedroom only receives about 2 channels. There is also a weird banging noise coming from the ceiling the entire time which woke us up, as well as the blinds that let all the light in as soon as morning arrives. It feels more like a high end hostel than a luxury apartment. Which is a real shame, because with a few pounds spent on it, it could be stunning and right in the centre of Chester is a great location too The positives are the apartment is spacious and comes with parking which was useful. We have stayed at oddfellows many many times over the years, usually in the duplex room in the main hotel, but we said last time we stayed in that room we wouldn’t be back until some money had been spent on it and we are now saying the same about the apartments. With the Grovesnor closing there’s a real opportunity for oddfellows to capture the luxury market, but they won’t be able to do that without spending some money on the hotel and I really hope they do, because we used to love it there.
Great location and very quirky hotel. Great staff and lovely comfortable beds. It was my husbands birthday and they even left a card and drinks vouchers for us which was a gorgeous personal touch.
The wallpaper in the upstairs bathroom was peeling away from the wall quite badly.
Quirky, beautiful and exceptionally well presented. We loved everything about our apartment - from the location, to the designated parking space, the glorious decor and spacious rooms - we felt comfortable and relaxed in Chester. Would we recommend? Absolutely!
Nothing at all! We loved everything!
Boutique and charming. The large tub in the room was a treat!
Some of the finishes were a bit dated and worn.
Lovely apartment, great location and perfect for 4 people.
Difficult to find, the directions given weren't clear at all, tried to call the hotel 4 or 5 times but no answer so ended up asking in a pub. We also have one shower down which wasnt a huge issue but worth mentioning. Unable to open the windows in one bedroom which made it quite uncomfortable for us. That being said, would go back and take a fan.
Great breakfast Friendly bar and breakfast staff. Clean and different
A small bed and not the king sized in the description. I am not a fan of glass portioned toilets visible to all corners of the room because of the mirrors One tea-bag in the draw. I know times are hard but.... Shutters above ceiling skylight were open with no way of closing, so we were awake at 6.30am with sun streaming in.
Very snazzy lovely beer garden rooms were funky loved it , and for the price was something like £65 one night but worth it so cute
Nothing
The staff team are exceptional and make every visit so very special! Thank-you all!X
Interior decor is cool.
It feels confused as to what it is. Hotel/ bar/ restaurant/ meeting venue?
Everything . The decor is quirky yet tasteful . Staff were very helpful and happy Bar staff Brill
Absolutely nothing
The location is right in the centre Chester and within walking distance of most attractions. The was very comfortable and well appointed with everything you could need. The staff were excellent - very efficient and friendly .
Nothing to report.
I’m extremely disappointed by the unfair and unsupportive treatment I received from this hotel. Ahead of our stay, I contacted the hotel to request a modest and reasonable accommodation: access to a private, hygienic space in the early afternoon. This was not simply for convenience—I am currently breastfeeding and needed somewhere appropriate to express milk and sterilise equipment. From the outset, my request was dismissed. I was first told to use public toilets, which is clearly inappropriate for something that requires privacy and hygiene. On calling again, I was then advised I could use a disabled toilet for up to an hour. This suggestion was both unsuitable and frankly quite shocking, as it completely ignored basic hygiene requirements and dignity. I made it very clear that I was not demanding early access to our room specifically—any private space with basic facilities (even just a kettle) would have been acceptable. I also offered to pay for early check-in or upgrade, showing I was willing to be flexible. Despite this, no effort was made to find a reasonable solution. Instead, the manager repeatedly referred to “policy” and how busy the hotel would be, with no attempt to accommodate a legitimate need. As breastfeeding mothers are protected under the Equality Act 2010, the lack of willingness to offer any reasonable alternative felt like unfavourable and discriminatory treatment. This was not just poor customer service—it demonstrated a lack of understanding, empathy, and inclusivity. As a result, we felt completely unwelcome and had no confidence that our needs would be met on arrival, so we made the decision to cancel our booking. Overall, a very disappointing experience that highlights a serious gap in how this hotel supports (or fails to support) guests with basic and legally protected needs.
Stopped as we were exploring the area. Very popular and quirky. Afternoon teas and Sunday roasts looked insane. Unfortunately as it was mothers day they were fully booked. We stayed to try a cocktail and returned later in the eve for live music. Great atmosphere. Friendly and efficient staff.
Loved its quirkiness
Could have been cleaner
The style of it
Unfinished
Room was exceptional
This is a quirky place and advertises it well. If you like chain hotels then this is not the place for you. This was a Monday night stay, so very quiet and probably not reflective of the weekend, but it seems like it would be a lot of fun then.
Anything would be rather picky here. Bubble bath for the open bath maybe and probably not enough tea bags for the tea drinking monsters we are. 😆
Location was excellent, hotel was quirky and staff were very friendly
Hotel room listed slippers and robe as included, they weren’t Room had lovely big skylight but blinds were closed with no option to open them No light switch for the bathroom downstairs at the top of the stairs
