Provider-sourced guest reviews.
The food was good. The ensuite shower was excellent.
The room was average, the windows would not properly close and rain water came in and stood on the window sills. The walls were cracked, the paintwork was poor and needed renovation work and then painting. Overall needed some love and money spending on it.
Beautiful building! The staff were so welcoming and the breakfast was beautiful! Definitely worth the money!
Could do with a bit more tlc, I know it’s an old building which is why it’s a bit expected, but there was damp around the window and a crack down the wall.. but that didn’t impact our stay at all! We loved it and will be back 100%!!
The only good thing was the helpful staff who arranged a suitable dinner for me on arrival.
The room did not match what is advertised. It was old, shabby, poorly maintained and the carpet was so worn I would not walk barefoot on it. The bath was marked and mould on screen, shower attachment had no power and not adjustable. Panel was coming of cistern. Dirty vent. No lamp shade on ceiling light. Bedside light not plugged in as no socket in reach, curtain not hung fully and bed so old could feel springs in mattress.
Beautiful building, friendly staff and lovely food. Great location.
The lights and especially the mirrored ceiling
The squeaky door and was quite surprised when I ordered only two drinks and the barmaid started adding up the bill with her fingers which was only resolved when I had to use my phone as a calculator for her but everyone was still very friendly
It was a good location for a family visit
We stayed here years ago and looks like it’s been refurbished very cheaply.
Lovely room, very friendly staff & beautiful breakfast. Wud stay again!
Nothing
Bedding was clean and staff were friendly.
Very old and dated. Leak in the bathroom and damp smell throughout.
Beautiful old building - I forgot to tell them that we had the dog but that was no problem - the food in the restaurant is outstanding - the staff lovely and friendly
Nothing
A lovely old building with lots of features. Excellent breakfasts and a friendly team 😊
The setting was lovely, breakfast was excellent and the staff were very helpful.
Staff were friendly and the building was quirky
Room didn't appear that clean and bedding not ready on arrival
The look of the hotel. The staff were really friendly. The breakfast and service was good.
The room wasn't made up on arrival, due to issues with bedding. No towels in room. The room although clean, needs a little TLC.

Atmosphere , bar and lounge buzzing. Breakfast very good and served to table. Shower excellent.
Room decor was a dark theme and not a fan of ceiling lights and mirror.
Old and charming
Needs a reverb
Upon arrival all seems fine. Beautiful grade Il listed building. Through the bar area the theme is much the same, lots of character and friendly reception staff. All changes when you step foot into your cheap and nasty hotel room which feels like you've arrived at another hotel! Besides the decor, the room was dirty, with several holes in the walls and on the floor, cracked mirrors, leaking shower, broken bed and a toilet on the verge of coming away from the wall! We were intending on having breakfast, but after reading other reviews on here, and based on the standard of the room we decided against it. Overall very disappointed with this hotel, and would recommend others take heed before booking!
Peaceful clean comfortable the staff were excellent friendly and always happy to help
Not so much didn’t like but certainly our room could do with some tlc although it was clean and tidy it just had standard wear and tear.
The staff as always
The breakfast is not like is used to be, local products, are not used anymore. The garden lodge, desperately needs refurbishment. Black window frame Front door plinth rotten and came away as we opened the door. Kitchen door hanging off Bath surround very old and cracked. We have been staying in the Great house for many years, sadly its not the same attention to detail.
It was a great stay, all, went well, staff were nice and friendly. No issues at all. Would return again.
Beautiful old Manor House, very friendly and helpful staff
Character
Decor is interesting ;-)
Beautiful hotel
Location not much around without a car journey
Amazing room, friendly and helpful staff. Food was perfect, definitely going again.
Friendly and helpful staff, excellent breakfast
Beautiful building an garden . Loved the dining room and bar .
Nothing .
Great old building, room was different given the overhead lighting show above the bed, maybe not every ones cup of tea but amusing nonetheless.
Time it took to get there from Cornwall. M5 a nightmare, 3 hour journey took 10 hrs, not fault of hotel but rural location didnt help
The staff at this hotel are lovely very professional and friendly nothing is too much trouble. This is our second stay here in 4 days. We liked the atmosphere, and their is a night porter on through the night in case you need anything. I would highly recommend anyone to stay here.
There wasn't anything that we didn't like it really was lovely
A lovely old, historic building in a great location.
The staff were friendly and welcoming.
My Pork Belly was so tough, it was difficult to cut. The chair I was on at my table was broken. The server hair was not tired back. My room could use a little freshen up. I bruised myself on catching the edge of bed because the space between bed and chair against desk was narrow. The toilet had to be sat on at an angle due to one side being up against the wall. The toilet seat needed to be fixed. in the shower, light fixtures were rusted. The worse part was I was kept awake through the night with repeated loud noises like old pipes. I filmed it and showed it to the receptionist in the morning. When I complained to the Hotel via email, no reply.
The staff were really good, on arrival, staying late to keep the bar open just for our party, and especially at breakfast in the morning.
The room and bathroom had numerous issues, including shoddy fittings in the bathroom, broken bedside lamp, and above all showers which took forever to run hot.
Friendly staff Good breakfast Convenient location
Leak in bathroom Broken window blind No hot water Lengthy check-in
The bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was modern and clean with nice toiletries. The room was a little dated however it fitted the character of the building so we liked it that way. The Welsh breakfast was of good quality and very tasty, in the nice restaurant. All the staff were friendly and helpful. Lovely outdoor space with seating. Parking free of charge.
The toilet in room 1 literally touched the wall so your body is squashed against the wall to use it, and the seat was wonky/coming off. Floors were creaky so you could hear everyone's comings and goings, although again the building is old so it is to be expected.
Very good, but could do with a link of paint hear and there. Also the shower tray needs re grouting. Not unclean just needs parts ect.
The outside light came on every few seconds it had a black out blind but it still kept us awake
The hotel was lovely, lovely atmosphere when you walked in to the hotel. Nothing was to much trouble professional but friendly, loved it.
The only thing was no hot water for shower or a bath.
Picturesque, room was very big and very clean. Bed was huge and really comfortable. Staff were all very friendly and professional. Evening meal of burger and pork belly was outstanding. The breakfast was high quality, one of the best we’ve had.
Bath water tap didn’t get hot but the shower did
Good location and the room was very spacious & clean.
Generally the room had seen better days - e.g. cupboard doors were coming off the hinges, neither tv worked (one because it wouldnt connect to the Internet, the other because it had no signal at all), the main light randomly dimmed. Oddly, there was a decent sized kitchen but things like a tea-towel were not provided and the only bin was tiny. It was clean and comfortable but we were glad we were only using it as a base. The garden room is behind the beer garden and sadly on both nights there was a lot of noise from people who had decided to drink using the seating there after hours (I dont think they were staying at the hotel as there were beer cans left the next morning).
Lovely hotel could do with decorating and a bit of a refurb but staff were great and lovely gardens
Breakfast was excellent
rooms a bit outdated
Free parking was good. Decor in the bar was nice. Bed was quite comfortable.
Poor upkeep in room. Chipped paint, moldy shower head, disturbing spray stains on the ceiling above bed, cobwebs in room, dust on most surfaces, broken plug socket behind tv dangerous, hidden charges for taking a dog. Fancy LED lighting in room but actually not that usable hard to see in the very darkly painted room. Weird mirror effect ceiling. Gardeners started power tools at 8:00am waking us up. Reception unmanned on arrival, bar and reception unmanned when we went for a drink later on.
Close to our event
Been charged twice and between the hotel and booking.com I’m still waiting for a refund nearly 7 weeks later
Fantastic stay, welcoming staff members, who looked after us throughout our stay. The food in the restaurant was excellent. We would both highly recommend a stay here. Tip top experience.
As per other reviews the room we had was not at all like the one on the website. We took our Collie dog with us on holiday and were allocated a room next to the car park. Once we managed to get our bags in past a huge Land Rover that was literally parked right in front of the entry steps, it was like walking into garish bridal suite. Marble effect walls, sparkly leather cow hide bed spread and the high(low)light was the ceiling mounted Perspex LED lights and bright red lighting. We had to laugh. We’re we in Amsterdam’s red lighting district, or rural Wales? Even Lawrence Lewelwyn-Bowen wouldn’t have gone that far! We couldn’t feel the springs in the mattress thankfully as per other reviews. The en-suite needs a serious overhaul with mouldy ceiling, sealant and flaking paint. On the plus side the food was fine and the restaurant, though a bit soulless, was presentable. The staff were nice too. If you like weird interior design in a 15th century house then this could be the place for you. Thanks, but we won’t be coming back anytime soon.
Good breakfast
Rooms a little tired and hot but hey it is a heatwave
Great location and staff very welcoming
Tired in second bedroom needed a refresher
Our second time here, on arrival the staff were lovely, room was clean, love the hotel! Bed was sooo comfortable!
Room had a few small inconveniences, one of the bedroom side lights didn’t work, wardrobe only had one dodgy sliding door, bathroom taps weren’t connected properly so kept moving around when turning taps on, normally would have told the hotel directly, but we were slightly intimidated by the very abrupt and unfriendly service on our departure
First time stay here lovely room like in Italy. Dog welcome. Historic building lovely. Gr8 breakfast. Will definitely return
Nothing
The location for what we wanted, the beer garden.
It was filthy and smelly, needs a deep clean.
The rooms were comfortable, and felt modern for how old the house was. It was quiet, the bathroom was modern, wish I’d had the breakfast as it looked amazing and the bar space for it was super cute
There was a light that came on outsisde through the night. The second night I didn’t notice it but just a little negatative.
We recently had a wedding (sat 20th)everything was perfect. The professional way you looked after us was outstanding. All the staff were polite and very hard working. Location was spot on .the food was superb compliments to the chef.the rooms were lovely.you made my wife and myself feel very special. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
Location
No air conditioning in the room
Everything was amazing
The food in the restaurant was superb and the staff were lovely.
The decor in the bedroom and bathroom was poor. The ironing board was disgusting. The glass on the wardrobe door was broken. Carpet a bit dirty. Shower was difficult to regulate the temperature.
Staff were attentive , polite and happy to help . The building was old with history. Facilities were good . Restaurant food was delicious and reasonably price. Car parking was excellent .
Nothing .
The bathroom smelt awful overnight, the shower was a trickle and there was a dangerously loose electrical switch plate in the bedroom.
The outside of the building looked amazing, a Grade II historic building with such charm. Unfortunately, the charm stopped at the front door. Upon entering, we walked to reception in the bar area. The lights were off and the vibe felt strange. But it was 8pm and they cater to locals, so that was fine. The staff were extremely polite and friendly. The ladies were very kind and made us feel welcomed. So hats off to them. We were given our key to Room 7 in the main building and directions to walk thru the bar and up the stairs. Great. Except the bar had a urine smell. There were a few people drinking (no problem) but the smell was worse than Wembley urinals during a footie match. Found out room, opened the door and whoa, first thing noticed was the bed. The decor was outdated but I don’t mind as long as it’s clean and comfortable. The mattress had visible depression marks. It was so thin, it looked like it’s been there since the building was built. I sat on it and could feel the boxspring beneath it! Moving on, the cleanliness was suspect. We saw stains on the drapes, carpet…the dust in the light fixture over the bed was disturbing. The rear paneling of the toilet was cracked and falling off. My partner and I looked at one another and thought, “it would detract from our enjoyment of our holiday”. I have never left a hotel after check in, I typically love quirky, more local accommodation but this was arguably one of the worst places I have ever seen. For the money, you could stay in a soulless chain but it would be clean and cheerful. Anyways, sadly, we left 30mins after checkin. I would have felt dirty sleeping in the bed. The staff were lovely in helping us. No fault of their. But this place old be so much more with a refresh and a deep clean.
Love this place. We got married here
History, quality of room
Nice staff , cozy bar and great breakfast
Rooms smelt a little damp
It is a beautiful building
Bells of the local church go off every hour through the night. The bathroom was dirty and the bathroom radiator was leaking and on all night so windows had to be open. Mattress was broken and worn and only option offered was camping bed mattresses to apply on top. Left 1 day early, they still tried to charge us another £45 for the dog fee. The receptionist reluctantly took this off my account. I wrote a letter of complaint to the hotel and have received no response. Worst nights sleep I’ve ever had any any hotel, hostel or air BnB. Sadly would not recommend.
Location was good for our needs amd accommodated our small dog too.
Room with a mirror above the bed. Mould around shower tray Leaking radiator in bathroom Poor lighting No hot water - the worst thing!
Its a lovely build8ing. Excellent breakfast. Great food in the evening. Nice staff.
Would have been perfect in the spacious garden lodge but there are rats or mice in the loft space that woke us up every night scurrying around.
Nice staff, lovely food comfy bed and a nice shower 🚿
Only let down by dirt on the bathroom door that you could grow potatoes in! An hour here and there with a paint brush 🖌️ and some attention to detail would hugely benefit the accommodation. Have a bit of pride in your hotel as it has so much potential!
My wife and I had an unfortunate experience meaning we spent half the night before we left in A & E. The hotel was very accommodating in letting us come down to breakfast later than the advertised serving times and extended our check out to 12.30 enabling us to get some well needed sleep before travelling home. The food (breakfast) was excellent.
The room did not have enough cupboard space to put our clothes, meaning we had to live out of our suitcases for the duration of our stay.
Clean Spacious room Comfortable
Shower very weak and hot water flow from tap in bath virtually non existent.
Lovely hotel, comfortable bed. Breakfast was great, friendly staff. Fab quirky hotel, great grounds, low ceilings so watch your head.... Adds to its character
The shower took a while to get warm but was fine after 2-3 minutes of running. The room was next to a function room so it could have been loud in the evening but we were out at a wedding so we were late getting in so it was fine.
Nothing
Dirty room Badly maintained - many broken fixtures No smoke alarm No toiletries No TV remote Personal effects in many places
A friendly reception, a big comfortable room, and a delicious evening diner. Perfect place to visit south Wales.
Everyting allright.
Bed was comfy
Cold shower Window wouldn't shut Bit tatty
Quirky. Staff were very friendly and helpful
Nothing really, it was all ok.

Best Sunday lunch ever ! Sunday lunch, absolutely superb. Beautiful food, value for money, friendly accommodating staff. Wouldn't go anywhere else. Can't wait to return ! Highly recommended. A brilliant find

Bed was very comfy Room was clean and shower was great and powerful and hot Breakfast and food catered for me being coeliac. Chef double checked and confirmed about frying food separately
WiFi?
Room was nicely furnished and decorated. Breakfast was excellent.
Same review I did 2 days ago. Just a great place to stay and eat with great staff working there
Nothing
Emily was very friendly and professional, especially when she arrived with a plunger to retrieve the stuck plug. Dinner was delicious and so was breakfast.
Bathroom sink fittings and lighting. Also side cupboards hide electrical fittings and one had to move cupboard quite a way from the wall to access. The correct address should be on Booking.com as we drove up and down narrow Bridgend High Street a couple of times before finding The Great House.
Nice old building with quirky bedrooms. Great location, amazing food and great staff. Thank you and I will be back
Nothing
Friendly staff excellent food
Some rooms are tired
Location was great, and easy to access. Bedding was clean.
Room not clean, bathroom not clean, very thin mattress which was extremely uncomfortable. When sitting in the bed, you could feel the hard base underneath the mattress. Floors not clean, and lights didn’t work properly with one red feeling light not turning off. Bathroom floods when shower is used.
Great stay, friendly staff and a good quality breakfast. Highly recommended
The food was exceptional Breakfast was hot and really well presented - the tea pot was fabulous! The two dinners there were of the highest quality and a real surprise given the venue
The Room 1 was poor. Too hot, the bed very badly made, the toilet too close to the wall, the wardrobe full of other 'stuff' and an electric cable across the doorway at head height!
The building is pretty, nice garden, good parking and nice staff
The shower was awful, no pressure and it was either too hot or too cold. The rooms are a bit dated but the bed was comfortable. It was around 16° on the day and even tho we had the windows open the room was really hot, quite uncomfortable at night, a fan would have been nice.
Stayed here a few times. Interesting old building in a nice village. Spacious room with a big, comfortable bed. Cosy bar with a good choice of drinks. Nice breakfast. Friendly staff.
Room had a few maintenance issues, such as cracked mirror, damaged furniture, non-working reading lamps.
Breakfast and evening meals excellent Loads of plug sockets to use Room size excellent
Room 5 shower barely worked and luke warm water at best Shower door handle broken Complimentary bottle of water showed signs of mould and only noticed just befor i drank some luckily i spotted it.
food very cheap ingredients
Lovely hotel ideal to park and central to Bridgend, clean bright room, great customer service. I will book again.
The staff were super friendly and the breakfast was delicious. Very comfortable bed and only a short drive to Bridgend train station for our trip to Cardiff 😊. Plenty of tea, coffee and even hot chocolate in our room.
Stayed in the annex, poor quality bed, uncomfortable nights sleep
Local church bells ring all night
