Great location, lovely breakfast with polite & helpful server, comfy bed
Unprofessional & completely uninterested staff at check-in. We felt as though we were an inconvenience. Upon asking about the lack of hot water for a shower, we were told to let it run & it will eventually come through & a facetious comment about it being a 16th century building & it takes a little time!.....wasn't aware that they made combi-boilers in the 16th century.....😏
The staff were lovely and the building was nice as it was old
It didn't feel clean the room I was in felt damp and unclean very basic
Bed was comfortable with clean linen. Bath and shower were lovely and hot.
Box skirt around bed was dirty and extra satin quilt on the bed had holes in it. Coffee making facilities hadn't been checked and no milk supplied. Lock to the room was horrendous to open and shut, thought we were going to stuck inside. Door to the room rattled all night and continously woke us up. One of the bathroom window panes was not supported at the bottom as the wood was rotten and had cm open gap. Breakfast was okay but not cooked well. Never once asked if everything was fine or were we enjoying our stay and breakfast
The team were all very welcoming
The room was in the attic which we knew when we booked but with the rooms below we could hear every conversation (word for word!) and even the kettle boiling, so we had disturbed sleep all night and then in the morning. We had the worse night sleep. The toilet seat was badly stain and should have been replaced with the bathroom needing updating. It felt clean in the room and the communal areas but the banisters just need a wipe.
Great location, staff were all super nice and helpful, characterful and cosy.
Wasn't as clean as we would have liked and getting a bit tired. But given the location and other good points, was good value for price we paid.
Location on old town area by steps
Staff absolutely not interested that I had mobility issue this was questioned at booking regarding lowest floor to accessible issues too high to walk. they said 3 flights to climb! Friend was in a mobility scooter!! The room bit tired and very dirty in my eyes compared to older inns stayed in. Drink tray had debris in it, tables dirty, plugs used extension leads hanging down, the toilet was disgusting in that the fixings were rusted and look awful plus the bath had stains in it not very pleasant. The bed valance was stained. The man who booked us in not bothered no names, so miserable and unhelpful not interested about concerns and was quite flippant ln his reply about my concerns . Will absolutely never recommend staying over. The only person nice was the waiter who served us breakfast he was pleasant anc attentive.
Good breakfast but some toast would have been nice. Room was ok. Bed comfy. Nice bar with good beers. Quaint cosy dining room.
Pillows were inadequate. Noisy toilet cistern. Shower head not stable.. Stairs to the top floor steep and no assistance offered by staff for heavy case. Chairs in dining room not comfortable.
Love the locality ..very convenient
They forgot to leave milk in room for teas coffees and there was no hairdryer in room I could see. After doing a 25 km walk just needed to rest. The reception phone number wasn't in room and they didn't answer anyway. Had the smallest coffee for breakfast . They should have asked if it was to liking- personally hate fried bread!...but staff rushing doing other things...obviously short staffed ...would rather spend hard earned cash and stay in hotel.
Its history and authenticity. Hot shower, comfortable bed. Super nice and helpful staff especially Ben.
The place has a great history and is a lovely place to stay..Great location.
Nothing..if I was to be really fussy, the room could have done with a fresh lick of paint, but not a big issue.
Breakfast very well presented. The room was comfortable and location in town centre the best. Staff were friendly and helpful and catered to our needs as we only had to ask. It was a great stay in town centre and we look forward to visiting every year.
Although the room was clean the carpet could do with replacing
Great location, very central, very old and charming
Breakfast okay - location excellent
Rooms need refurbishing, bed was lumpy , pillows very poor
Breakfast was excellent on all three days we were there. Staff are very helpful and friendly. Very relaxed atmosphere. The building is a lovely old coaching inn with many original features and bags of charm and character It also has two dining/function rooms tastefully decorated in keeping with the old wood panelling, flagged floors and fire places. The bedroom and bathroom were of a good size and the beds were comfortable.
More attention could be given to the cleanliness of the bedroom and bathroom eg dusty lamp shades and cobwebs in some corners. Although the room was a good size providing everything necessary, the paint work was tired and would benefit from repainting.
The age and history of the building
Although it is an old pub could have done with a bit of a freshen up
Brekfast was lovely, good quality products. Staff friendly and helpful. Bed comfortable and quality bedding. The location brilliant.. The hotel/pub is quirky with alot of history, lovely tiled/wooden floors in bar and restaurant..
The room especially the bathroom was dirty and needed some updating. Radiator rusty and peeling. Shower needs updating hot and cold water not running consistently.. Door frame dirty and stained...
Welcoming and old style.
Few cracks in bedroom ceiling comes with ache.
Check in poor Room changed Very run down
Just about everything
Location , perfect for a visit to Whitby , food and staff were excellent.
Room was in keeping with the age of the building , 16th century, dark and very atmospheric.
Ottima posizione, molto caratteristico
In the heart of Whitby, right by all the hot spots. Quirky old building, real cosy vibes!
Lovely character building great breakfast and lovely staff .
Staff d food
Very bad access no lift! Noise pollution both inside and out. Room cleaning poor. Bathroom window nailed open ! Shoddy bathroom very unclean. The only good thing the bed was comfy but after a long hike up the stairs it needed to be !!
The breakfast was amazing
We arrived at check in time but our room wasn’t ready for 90 minutes which was a bit disappointing. Rooms very outdated
Location is close proximity to the main part of Whitby so this is the reason we choose this accommodation The staff were as helpful as possible
It was grubby, requested milk for the hot drinks and got fresh milk but No fridge it was off so only had one hot drink in the end. The room needs TLC curtains Not attached properly Hook missing Needs painting Window sill falling apart wood Needs repairing as it’s dangerous! Toilet roll holder was loose and eventually fell off. We had a dog friendly room but in the end my sons dog didn’t use the room There was a flea found it jumped so that room Needs a deeper clean!. The pillows were flat!. The whole building in general was sticky and when I used a wet wipe it was dirty!. We appreciate if us an old building but repairs and painting and cleaning are expected as standard. Asked if we could have a bacon and sausage sandwich to take away that was refused Not sure 🤔 why as it would off been cooked if we sat in for breakfast First morning had breakfast which was tasteless tbh and No toast very strict in the set menu Filter coffee or tea could even do a cappuccino!. Poor quality produce Not impressed
Bags of character. Fantastic location. Well equipped. Very comfortable.
Loved it all - parking tricky but we were warned and made it work the advice given by the hotel was spot on so it was not a problem.
The beds were clean and comfortable. Breakfast was great when it arrived but it was a long wait.
We had to look for someone to check us in. Had to wait ages for breakfast and a cuppa. Staff were unfriendly clearly under staffed. The stairs were extremely steep, the guy could see I was disabled yet didn't offer to help me carry my bag.
Good location great staff and clean
To many stairs ti attic
Location
Nothing
We were close to the centre and great for the folk festival
Nothing
Great location and quirky
The staff were welcoming the pub was nice food was really good
The room was outdated, grubby and the walls were dirty and the bath was dirty marked didn’t feel clean so my partner didn’t use shower . The cost of £125 is too high and I won’t stop there again really disappointing.
Good location, lovely staff, great breakfast
Bit too old and run down
Location is amazing The kids like the ghost stories Breakfast was ok
We stayed in the top family room was really dusty with cobwebs every where Needs a new sofa in the room Needs new flooring in bathroom Needs a lick of paint everywhere Breakfast was ok but poached eggs were rock hard
Old quaint hotel. Basic accommodation. Comfortable bed. Breakfast was excellent.
Squeaky floorboards, but understandable considering the age of the hotel. Carpet could have been vacuum cleaned as their were bits lying around.
Location. Nice bed. Good breakfast
Very tired decor, not very clean.
Quaint old coaching building set in the old town.
Breakfast content & serving was a bit random eg, no cereal/juice, number sausages as per menu, delayed toast until repeated requests, no cafetiere coffee.
Très calme et magnifique vue sur les toits. Un hôtel très British avec de magnifique salle.
Rooms are located in 18th century inn, very clean, spacey, fully equipped and, as rumoured, haunted :-) Just few steps away from Whitby Abbey. Nice staff. Good food. Great view.
Location
Nothing I didn’t like.
Location and pub itself
Lovely old style hotel, perfect for what we wanted for our stay
Nothing I didn’t like
Lovely old pub, restaurant and hotel. Good beer and food
Nothing, thought ere was a lot of climbing to our attic room, but we expected that when we booked
Lovely quaint hotel, lots of space for a family room & great wifi

Bella posizione Struttura un po' datata ma nel complesso confortevole
La colazione purtroppo è solo English style

La colazione
Excellent location and friendly staff . Also an excellent cooked breakfast.
We did notice that the accommodation both in our room and other places needed a new toilet seats as they look very worn. Also our room was an attic conversion room. and there was no electric cooling fan in there which luckily for us . It was not to hot . We will definitely go again thanks for Great stay.
It was quirky, evening meal and breakfast was plentiful and hot. Ample space in the bedroom. Clean bedding.
I booked a twin on booking.com but was a double when we arrived, nothing was done to rectify this. The room was dirty and mouldy, ripped bath mats, streaky mirrors. Restaurant and bar very dark but this was to go with the old building. No hot water, excuse was "because your in the top room".
Close to everything in Whitby, really good place, very comfy bed
No massive issues at all, parts of breakfast were a bit cold, the shower did cut off midway through but probably down to the water pressure when everyone is getting showered at the same time.
Central location Room was cosy Lots of stairs up to our attic room but we were made aware if that prior to our stay. Fantastic breakfast Friendly and professional staff
NA
The accommodation was clean spacious and well stocked . Near amenities easy to get to. The staff were extremelyhelpfulandfriendly . Only gripe was top floor large bedroom had a bad odour , this was reported. Would definitely recommend.
The top floor large bedroom had a bad odour.
The restaurant was nice and the food was lovely
Bedroom very outdated
Beautiful and historic building, very central.
The bed wasn't very comfortable. The breakfast came without toast, I have never had to ask for toast before, and there were no pots of jam on the table. So disappointing and too basic considering the cost of our stay.
Good location
Dirty, very tired room, hot water didn’t work, several plugs didn’t work
Posizione ottima ai piedi dell'abbazia e non lontana dalla fermata dei bus, inoltre, relativamente tranquilla la sera. Camera con bagno enorme dotato sia di doccia sia di vasca. Ottima la colazione
Location was great with old world charm. Good breakfast.
The location was central and easy access to everywhere
The window in our room had a broken section in it and was taped up with clear cello tape which wasn’t very attractive and there was a hole in the floor under the carpet that we kept stepping in and stained carpet, there was a lot of dust on the arm of bedside lamp. When we went for breakfast the first day we had bacon sandwiches which we found dry, the second day we went for breakfast we ordered eggs Benedict one eggs well done and one runny and the well done egg was runny and the runny egg was uncooked was a white jelly, the front of house young man was very apologetic and he asked if we wanted it redone we said no as we was put off so ordered toast instead and we got warm bread so left and had to have breakfast elsewhere also we were served our tea in chipped and stained teapot and we were sat near the kitchen which the kickboard and window was dirty, as being a head chef myself this is what l noticed and it’s not a case of just being picky.
Breakfast was poor not enough choice and restaurant was dirty
Cleanliness, breakfast either cereal or cooked no offer of fruit and had to ask for toast.
Fantastic breakfast
Room was tired and dirty bed was uncomfortable walking into the actual room was unsafe as there was no easy access as it was an attic room paint was peeling off the walls due to damp very noisy
Nothing
Location, quirky.
Few electric sockets in room.
Excellent location, great breakfast, friendly staff, nice room. Stayed for the second time and would go back for a third.
The seagulls are noisy but that isn’t the hotel’s fault or anything they can ‘fix’. Part of the experience, I suppose!
Room was as lovely as ever. I love this hotel. Always stay here when I visit Whitby.
5 mornings I asked for toast with my breakfast, order was taken and got my toast once. Also the eggs Benedict was on what looked like sourdough bread rather than the English muffin it's been on in previous years. Seems to have gone down hill from my previous stays which is a shame as everything else was lovely.
It’s quirky style
Only the stairs as I’m 61
Location
Little bit dated
The location was perfect Hotel was quirky
I appreciate the hotel is very old, which i loved but it definitely needs a lick of paint it is very tired looking. The mugs in our room were dirty and stained absolutely no excuse for that and the toilet seat was yellow looking, it certainly put me off.
Great location and the staff were amazing
Very noisy on our first night however the England match was on
Absolutely nothing
The property was dark and uninviting, the room was filthy, extremely outdated and in need of total renovation.
The history of the building.
Carpet was dirty. Not sure if it was old or had dogs been in the room.
Le lieu était plaisant et typique du pub anglais. Le personnel gentil et acceuillant. Jy reviendrais avec plaisir !
It was very old i thought comfort suffered
The history
Accogliente Letto Super Staff disponibile e gentile Colazione buona
Mancava un frigorifero in camera
Breakfast was ok
Not very clean
Excellent location and full of history Room was lovely and clean and ideal for our overnight stay in Whitby
The bathroom door wouldn't close properly Needed attention But apart from that no complaints
Excellent location
No milk for tea/coffee in room. Arrived late after strenuous day, assume needed to request from bar but too tired to do so as needed to prepare for early start the following day
The staff were welocoming, the room was clean and comfortable and good value for money. The breakfast was also lovely.
We really liked the quirky olde-worlde building and room layout, and the location in Whitby old town was perfect. Staff courteous and helpful at all times.
Breakfast was a little disappointing. Eggs Benedict was over cooked, on underdone toast. Toast order didn't arrive, and there was no juice offered, just tea and coffee (which took 20 minutes to arrive). Didn't bother on the second morning, sadly.
Nice staff
Bathroom had a step immediatly opening door which husband fell straight up no warning sign on door
Oh no, our favourite place let us down! We have been coming here for years and always book an evening meal for every Whitby visit. Every time has been wonderful. We decided to pop in for lunch this week and have the crab sandwich. What arrived was shop bought brown bread slices slapped together with a scraping, and I mean a literal scraping, of crab paste. No crab meat. Nothing else, no garnish, just a small basket of chips. The sandwich was dry and looked like a cheap packed lunch. £15!!! The older man serving was miserable and abrupt too. No wonder the place was empty. Do better WH&G.
Location was good in the middle of the old town although somewhat noisy from 6am delivery vehicles fridges running and bin collection of a kind every day
Was clean and tidy but definitely needed updating but really old world if you like that sort of thing
Location and it’s history
Tired and needs repairs
Great location
Small bedroom/ shower room
Lovely location, amazing staff, very attentive, delicious breakfast
The rooms were a little noisy - not the hotels fault though
We loved the location as the accommodation is right in the heart of Whitby. The building is wonderfully old and original, which gives it that certain charm. Breakfast was good and staff where great. Lovely shower with lots of hot water and nice clean towels. Tea, coffee and biscuit in room was appreciated.
We appreciate the building is old, but the bedroom we stayed in was needing renovating, painting and cleaning. General cleanliness was awful including the bed which was disgusting, the actual bed was really dirty and pillows were flat and well worn with no protectors. We wouldnt book again sadly.
Lovely room, friendly staff in a great location for exploring heart of old town. Lovely breakfast with veggie options.
Parking is difficult but they did give clear options. We were at the top of the accommodation, so up several stairs, but again it was clearly explained in advance, so we knew.
Excellent restaurant and staff were very friendly and very helpful. Food excellent and atmosphere super. Location was just perfect in the old town with huge character/
Was not a lot to dislike - a great break and location and Inn.
History of building, qwerky bar. Friendly staff. Nice breakfast. Great decor. Felt very comfortable stay.
Pillows could have been puffier to be more comfortable & improve sleep.
very old building with lots of character
Property is very neglected in terms of upkeep and decoration, room not clean at all especially the bathroom, breakfast ok but again the tables weren't clean, very sticky.
Old authentic Inn, had a rustic charm, which suited the area.

Good location
The room was grubby
The antiquity of the place, the history of the building, the staff! :D
Great location in the heart of whitby and amazing value for money
Location, staff and good food
It’s very tired and needs a freshen up in the rooms and hallways to bring it back to its original glory
Location was brilliant right in the heart of the town.
Bar closes at 10pm
Historical building.
Poor greeting and service from staff. Room full of cobwebs. Burnt throw on the bed. Windows didn’t open in 25 degrees. Desperately in need of decoration, stains and chipped paint everywhere. Poor breakfast, no care over service, no water or juice served after it was ordered. Visited pub on Friday night and the beer was flat and the guiness tasted off. Left and drinks and went back to our room.
