Provider-sourced guest reviews.
The staff were so friendly and very accommodating. We train and then the bus around the corner here and it worked as planned. The location of the Inn is amazing, right on the main strip of the quaint, picturesque village. The Inn was clean, classy, and way more than what we were expecting. The food at the Inn was also great and we would absolutely go back in a heartbeat to stay here.
The room and extremely comfortable bed
Nothing
Central location great to get around Alnwick. Comfortable
No one manning overnight. Stay was very noisy. Other guests were up till 4am and very loud and there was no staff to remind guests to be quiet and have consideration for other guests. We were unable to get a good nights sleep before heading off on a very long planned walk the next day
Great position with friendly staff and comfortable room.
I booked a room with twin beds but had a king size double which I wasn’t expecting
Location and friendly staff
Having to enter through the back external stairwell after 23:00 which would have been okay but the stair mid landing was very slippery (like black ice) after rain and my partner slipped and hurt herself.
Breakfast was fantastic
The room was lovely and spacious and set up as a twin as we requested. The Plough is brilliantly located for the town, and for Alnwick Castle and Gardens, and it is only a short walk to Barter Books too. The staff were excellent, really friendly and welcoming and we ate in the restaurant on the first night and the food was brilliant too. A really lovely place to stay and I would definitely stay there again if/when I go back to Alnwick.
Nothing, everything was great!
Location and staff super friendly
Slow drain from the shower
Room was exceptional large and so comfortable. Loved the names of the rooms we were in THE GADGIE !!!
Nothing
Excellent location and parking facilities, friendly staff.
Free wifi was advertised but you have to subscribe to sky network supplying your personal details which I wasn’t prepared to do so we had no internet during out stay.
The location. The staff were friendly and helpful
The room was quite small. Toilet very noisy and overall a lot of noise from the pub. There was also a dog yapping somewhere in the building.
Central
Bit tired Tea and coffee in room not replaced after first night Shampoo was next to the basin and no where near shower Fire door exit had exposed cables Fire door had a large hole in the bottom and stair from it felt unsafe
Suited our needs for a stay on the way home from Scotland. Central town location
Room was a little smaller than expected
The Inn and room were lovely, tastefully decorated and very comfy bed. The room was a really good size and the bedding was very good quality. Toiletries supplied were also very nice. We had breakfast and dinner whilst there and the food is excellent with fresh local produce. They have an on site smoker, so we would totally recommend trying their smokehouse dishes. The staff were all friendly, great hosting and a good selection in the bar with a good knowledge of beverages. Dog friendly if you have a furry guest and they have a good selection of dog treats and even a roast dinner to purchase for them. Location is great, with only a short walk to the centre, castle, gardens etc, easy access out of town if you want to explore the Northumberland coast, which is only 30 minutes away.
We had to wait longer than comfortable for our breakfast to be served, but that was forgiven once we received it as it was seriously good! Housekeeping could do better in general areas of the property and focus on detail ie; stairs, floors and lobby areas. I would also say it may not be suitable for some guests with mobility issues, due to stairs to all rooms and out of hours access via the fire escape, however, they do clearly specify this in their advertising.
Lovely stuff, particularly the young man in the pink cowboy 🤠 hat who checked us in. He was very nice helpful and just a generally likeable good conversationalist.
Super dusty, poor parking, very expensive special much more so than the regular meals. Shower had hair in it. Broken lights in shower room.
Staff were lovely and welcoming. They tried their best to help in a rubbish situation. They temporarily fixed the shower so it was still usable, and they were super appreciative that we weren’t upset or angry with the issues in our room. Just want to emphasise this isn’t a moan at the venue. It is a great location, the venue has so much potential and the team are working to the highest regards they can with the issues they have. It’s a great atmosphere, a friendly team, and we made light of the issues we had. I only mention them in the hope they get them fixed.
Shower pressure was rubbish, shower didn’t drain, shower head too heavy for the holder so cracked it, and when staff tried to fix it, it came off of the wall. Shampoo wasn’t filled up. Dusty. Paint looked like room was unfinished, cracked plaster around door, scuffs all across wall adjacent to door, hatch to attic covered in muck, tv didn’t receive signal for channels and WiFi didn’t work so weren’t able to use streaming services either. Fridge on first floor for water and milk; first day no milk, second day nothing. Basket kicked around hallway after it was abandoned. Wanted to support a local pub, and I understand it is being renovated but I believe the breakfast we were offered didn’t cover the £210 that was paid for our stay and the issues we had. Was told the shower would be fixed whilst we were out the next day and it wasn’t, no cleaners came in.
Breakfast was very good
Lock on inside of bathroom door didn't work properly. Heater did not work. No chair to sit on.
Central location
The staff are excellent - very friendly and professional. The bed was comfortable (had I been able to actually sleep)
Housekeeping and general maintenance are lacking. Initially the room looked nice -but it was found to be very dusty (top of bed, blinds, door, cobwebs in bathroom, marks on walls). There was mould behind the toilet and large damp patch on the bathroom ceiling. I was woken up at 05.50 by repeated loud noise from bin collection or beer delivery and could not get back to sleep so terrible rest. To add insult to injury, upon a very tired check out I found too late that there was no toilet paper in the stall in the ladies. Definitely not worth the £117 paid to stay in dirty room and not have a restful sleep. The car park is very tight to enter/leave but that is due to the building.
Ideally situated with free parking
Sub standard double room not what is shown on your website it was to small even for a single bed
Staff were outstanding- so welcoming and helpful. Everywhere was really clean which matters a lot to me.
There wasn't anything we didn't like.
Loved the character of the building inside and out loved our room
Confusion in the dining area. Didnt have a lot of the food at lunch but wasnt told what was NOT available until we ordered. and it was only 1pm. Staff seems a bit confused of how to seat us..drinks were late as they forgot about them. Staff didnt know if they did coleslaw. They didnt do coleslaw..they did do coleslaw. By the time we got it we had mostly eaten our food. Just staff erros although they were all really lovely. Especially the lad with the pink cowboy hat. Didnt get his name but he was trying to do everything. He is worth his weight in gold so its only fair to mention him. He made us feel very welcome. What a lovely lad he is!! No iron in our room or my daugher's who also stayed at the same time they couldnt find 1 although each room shud have had 1. Toilet wasnt cleaned properly and had scale near the bottom in the corners. I wud stay again but not for dining
Location was brilliant. Friendly staff.
Resturant menu was ok if you liked burgers. But what we had was delicious.
Location style
No air-conditioning
Comfortable bed. Free bottled water you could help yourself to.
Staffing level was poor. Wait for checking. Bathroom could have been cleaner. Very noisy electric shower.
Location was very good. The room was small but had everything we needed.
Constant background music. Arriving back after a day out we ordered coffee, the music was so loud we took it upstairs. There were very few people about so the music appeared to be for the pleasure of the staff. On our last night the music was so loud ,on the ground floor, we could hear it in our second floor room.
This is in a good location with good parking and the staff are very nice and friendly
The room was very small and in the hot summer months the room gets very hot making it a bit difficult to sleep. The ironing facilities listed is not true as it is not in the room and the staff do not know where the iron actually is. The shower was not very clean and it was extremely loud when in use. There was an unpleasant smell from the toilet and it was very loud when flushed
History of the building, location, comfy beds, welcoming staff
The sever staff at times felt a little inexperienced for example when asking for a slight amendment to an order the staff were quite unsure, but did politely and quickly go and check with more senior staff for clarification. Needs to be a kids menu offering smaller portions, would be nice if hotel had bath robes, and properly was a little aged in parts such as some of wallpaper coming off, but only slightly in this regard, one of the rooms the telly wasn’t working and strong smell from nearby outdoor vent to back of property.
Location was brill
Fire escape was not the proper way to come& go from the hotel fire doors should not be closed. Hard work going up& down the stairs to top room
It was a very comfortable room and the staff very helpful.
We didn't know they were unable to serve breakfast until we arrived.
Breakfast was not available. Despite understanding this had been requested. Nil staff presence in the morning. Evening meal was limited to a ‘Texas barbecue’. Not appropriate to our family. Rooms not serviced. Told by manager ‘we hadn’t put label on the door’. Yet no label available in either room. Saturday 11 July, we were all kept awake around midnight by a member of the public (guest ??), battering the fire escape door for 2 hours, and yelling foul abusive language. Endeavoured to call the ‘on call number’. Phone switched off. Was on point of calling police. Door was damaged. No staff present when we departed to share information with.
Minimal customer service, and we were lied too. Manager stated she would ‘investigate the servicing of the rooms’, and update us. We are still waiting.
The location
No reception, bar attender showed us the room. 3rd floor, no lift. A small window in the room. People noisy and disturbing our sleep in the middle of the night. No internet. No breakfast service.
The location was excellent and the hotel was well maintained internally and externally The staff were pleasant and efficient The rooms were comfortable The meals were very good although disappointing that breakfast was not available
The hotel closed at 11pm after which entry was obtained by a wooden fire escape at the rear of the building. The internal doors were locked and there were no staff on duty until approximately 11am when they came in to prepare for lunch. As an elderly female, access by a fire escape was totally unacceptable. If this had been made clear at the time of booking, I would never have considered staying there. On the day of departure I had to arrange for a relative who was staying elsewhere, to come and carry my suitcase down from the second floor as there were no staff on duty. A wooden fire escape with no other means of escape is an accident waiting to happen. I cannot believe that this is actually legal.
Huge room, comfortable bed, lovely staff, good food, fantastic burger
Having to use the fire escape from 10pm until noon. It was very difficult to carry suitcases down when checking out. We got a message telling us about this after we had already checked in. There was a very high bath with shower over which had no grab rails to climb in and out. The water pressure was so low that you would not be able to use the bath anyway. The access to the carpark is very narrow and not signposted.
The room was comfortable and well equipped, the bar and waiting staff were fine and the drink and food good, both for a light lunch and in the evening. There is a pleasant area at the front of the Plough to sit out to enjoy a drink and there is another at the back. The Plough is near the centre of the town so is convenient for all the attractions.
I was astonished to find that it does not do breakfast (but other places nearby fill the gap.). Also, when the front doors are closed (up to lunch-time and late evening) guests enter and leave by an interlocked fire escape which is a bit difficult and steep for elderly guests.
There was no breakfast. We liked the lunch and dinner. The staff were excellent, friendly and helpful. The hotel was spotless and well decorated and in a good location.
I was disappointed that there was no breakfast. I did not like that the hotel's public doors, inside and outside locked at 11pm and access after that was via the fire escape. I did not like that the fire escape was made of wood, had narrow steps and was close to the kitchen. I am convinced that this is not within health and safety rules, and feel it is an accident waiting to happen.I did not like that there was no staff available during the night.
Room had what we needed for our stay. Bed was comfortable.
No breakfast provision. Room was accessed via external staircase at back of building after 10pm. Stay spoiled by some one trying to gain entry by trying to force fire escape door from the outside on three occasions during the night this constituted to loud banging and disrupted sleep.
Being served by George Michael was a real treat. The hotel was clean, inviting and comfortable and situated perfectly.
Location excellent, bus stop outside the Plough to travel to other parts of Northumberland, also Alnwick Castle Gardens playhouse & Barter books all within walking distances. Plough clean ,staff helpful bar area with outside area all good.
Sink in bathroom cracked, shower small ,no air con no fridge ,needed to have windows open as we were on the front of the building there was a lot of traffic noise .
Friendly staff clean rooms, central to everything in Alnwick especially Alnwick gardens and castle round the corner
Welcoming staff, cosy room and comfortable beds with amazing pillows
Ligging van het hotel, eigen parkeerplaats,
Afvoer van fonteintje en douche werken op de 2e niet goed waardoor water snel omhoog komt
A wonderfully appointed position in Alnwick town close to the Castle. A very comfortable room.
Not being told that the kitchen was shut the whole week and no food would be available until we arrived at the premises
The staff were very helpful and polite. The bar area was nice and the outside patio area was very pleasant. The room was spacious and very clean.
The bathroom though clean and tidy could do with some little finer touches with the decor. Unfortunately during our stay there were no breakfasts or meals due to work being carried out in the kitchen which we were looking forward to having as the previous feedback was really positive.
Front doors locked from 10.30pm until noon next day. Only access was through a very tight and steep staircase (fire escape) at the back of the building. The fire escape looked straight into the window so anyone using them could see us in the room. No food was served or in fact available. Heating was on full belt on an already hot night. Shower and sink did not drain. Shower went hot and cold. We struggled to park the car round the back due to the inadequate access. We only stayed one night , even though we paid for 2. Bed was not comfortable either!
Was perfect, lovely pub and top quality rooms
Staff were ok and the place was clean
It was red hot in the room on an evening and the fan they supplied broke after a while. Couldn’t open the windows for some air and ironically enough the air con until outside made a racket all night long. Had very little sleep
Lovely room and very clean
Windows did not open so the room was unbelievably hot. Needed to leave the room early in the morning as couldn’t stand the heat.
Excellent central location.
No breakfast facilities.
Lovely accommodation and location
Breakfast unavailable
A very warm welcome from the member of staff. Looked after our luggage until check in. Clear instructions regarding entering and exiting the hotel. Our room was a good size. It was clean and comfortable.
Our bathroom extractor fan continued running for a long time after switching the light off. An air conditioning unit, outside our room, operated noisily, on and off the entire time. Torturous. It was difficult to get to sleep and stay asleep. I did try earplugs but they were ineffective.
Loved everything about our stay - food, accommodation and lovely staff.
Convenient for the places we wanted to visit and for good restaurants. Staff were very helpful and went out of their way to be of help.
Small things - bulbs that needed replacing and a noisy fan outside one of the rooms we stayed in.
Location
Access - extremely narrow to carpark (no warning), lack of staff competency - twice declined service at the bar as server was under age to serve, premises grubby, dogs in the dining area
The room was nice, good towels, clean, comfortable bed, the bathroom was fine
The room was far too hot and no way to cool it down (no windows could be open and no fan). There was noisy fan unit outside/next to the room that was on and off all night keeping us awake. The appeared to be only one member of staff on, who was friendly but wasn’t around when we sat in the bar for service for around 10 minutes.
Staff were very accommodating and friendly c
Couldn't get into my room immediately due to mix up with the keys
The staff were exceptional changing the room from a king size to a twin. xxx
Not so keen on the noisy toilets
Location
No food or breakfast available as advertised on the site
Chambre confortable dans une rue tranquille au coeur d’Alnwick
Les velux n’étaient pas occultant, problème avec le débit d’eau de la douche
Bed was comfortable
I booked this for my son and his partner for a 2 night stay. On the 1st night the toilet flush broke in the en-suite. There were no staff available until the next morning and they were told at 9am that someone would come and fix it within 30 minutes. When they left the hotel at midday nobody had spoken to them and they were told that a plumber would be coming to fix it on Monday. The hotel is closed after 10.30pm with no access to shared areas so they were essentially left without a working toilet for more than half of their stay. On top of this the room was unbearably warm and there was no access to open a window and no fan provided. Staff were unavailable most of the time and rude and unhelpful when they were. This was £170 for 2 night so not cheap. I then emailed the hotel to complain and didn't get any response. If I were the people running this hotel I would be embarrassed.
Excellent location , very clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
Cold shower
Staff were friendly and helpful, there was a problem with our room but it was sorted out to our satisfaction. Rooms were very comfortable and clean.
A lot of stairs to the rooms and only way in and out between 10pm and 10am is via the fire escape stairs. Also we had booked dinner for 7.30 and unfortunately our food arrived before our cocktails ( yes I know this is a 1st world problem) , staff apologised and then didn’t get offered a dessert or further drinks. We went to the bar for drinks but we had to leave at 9.45 which seemed a bit early for a pub on a Saturday night. Also there seemed no offer of breakfast even though it was mentioned in the booking information. Not a problem though as we went to Barter Books for breakfast.
The position.
Our room was nothing like the room in the photos. The furniture and wallpaper were good but the bed was incredibly soft. The room was next to a fire escape door which is used as the way in for everyone once the bar has closed. It was noisy but worse still was that the window blind didn’t fall to the bottom of the window so everything and everyone in the room was on view to anyone using that way in. In fairness, a member of staff did manage to free it after struggling with it for some time. We were also surprised that a hotel didn’t offer breakfast.
A breakfast service would be good.
Convenient location in centre of Alnwick. Onsite parking.
Rooms are quite small. No breakfast available though we had breakfast at the nearby Barter's bookshop (in converted railway station) which was fun.
The hotel was clean and well decorated. The location was excellent.
The hotel did not provide breakfast not even a breakfast box to eat in the room. Also we had to leave via a fire escape as no staff on duty downstairs in reception and front doors closed. Also we stayed for dinner one night and at least four options were not available and a few beers were not available. Very disappointing.
The staff was friendly and helpful, rooms were nice and comfortable, restaurant was lovely to eat in
No problems
The bedroom was excellent.
The fact that food stopped being served at 16:00 and the bar closed at 20:00 as the Hotel was not busy.
Comfortable bed
Below average food Very dusty room No chance of breakfast nor facilities to make your own Loud fan in bathrooms could be heard all night
Excellent location, clean and comfortable rooms, good food and drink options and great staff
Nothing.
Lovely room. Comfortable bed. Great location.
We loved the warm friendly welcome at the reception when we arrived. The staff were extremely attentive and we felt totally relaxed. The food was just wonderful, freshly cooked to order with big portions. We stayed in the "Muckle" bedroom and it was really quite sumptuous, spacious and warm. I'd say it's the comfiest bed we've slept in any hotel. We look forward to staying in the future on our visits to Alnwick.
There was nothing to dislike at all.
The few staff I met were friendly and efficient. The room was fine, bed comfortable. Appreciated coffee/ tea making facilities
The fact that eg cups were not changed daily Being' locked in' in the morning. I appreciate that for security reasons it is necessary at night but would hope to be released by 9.30am!
The room was lovely, very comfortable, and ensuite bathroom was good. Great location, very central, and check-in was simple & straightforward.
Not much information provided on check-in (e.g. about wifi, restaurant, etc), car park was tricky to find but in a good spot once we'd found it - through a tiny archway into the back of the pub!
Lovely location being a little way out of main centre
No option of breakfast. It was easter sunday attending a wedding and had to go looking to see what was open that did breakfast.
Great location and wonderful facilities
Some confusion using fob to enter rear entrance. Pub closed at 9pm.
Very cosy comfortable room. Bed, pillows, duvet all very comfortable and good shower with plenty shower gel, body lotion etc
I enjoyed my stay. Nothing at all to dislike!
On site parking
The shower was no better than a drizzle. You cannot get out through the main building and had to exit via an outside fire escape with cases
Nice, comfortable rooms five minute walk to Alnwick town centre. Bonus of free car parking.
Nothing
Great location and value for money.
Lovely hotel room, felt very welcome by staff. Bedroom clean and comfy bed. In a great location, up the road from barter books! Very nice decor downstairs, parking available. Can’t wait to return :)
Check in was very quick and efficient
Our room (coble) was very hot, inadequate water pressure for the shower. Something woke us at 4am the first morning, it sounded like a pump going off every 25 seconds. This continued for a couple of hours. The next morning, at 1am, rowdy guests trying to get back in through possibly the wrong door which wouldn't open for them but was right next to our room. This continued for approximately 1 hour.
Nice decor friendly staff comfy beds
Stairs lots of them ' check out system not great
Very comfortable bed and pillows warm and cosy room . toiletries were lovely .
Would have liked breakfast available .
The room was beautiful, the bed was comfy. The extras were great tea, coffee hit chocolate and biscuits Extras in the bathroom and a Fab shower Parking on site too
The external door was near our room and other guests were in and out late at night banging the door. The walls were very thin and you could hear extractors in other rooms. Loud music was played in the morning from the kitchen too. Bad nights sleep due to noise.
Friendly, helpful staff, especially Connor. Clean comfortable room, close to everything.
Using fire escape for entrance and exit between 10 p.m. and 10 a.m.
Location was perfect might be worth highlighting to guests that the car park is to the rear of the property through a narrow entrance easily missed we did.
Would have been nice to have wifi during our stay. Bit confused on this one there appears to be routers located around the property but when asked the staff said wifi was not available
Good location nr to the theatre
Having to use the fire escape to leave the building
Room was comfy and big enough, bed was so comfortable, visited for work so was concerned if could hear bar noise but none. Upstairs access through fire escape with fob so secure. Clean and great shower. Everything I needed. Warm enough. Car park a challenge but I managed with my car, but not everyone would !
Traffic noise started at 5 am, I was there for work so it didn't matter too much, up at 6, but could go with double glazing. No view.
Location
Everything, great team, comfortable rooms and delicious food! Many thanks Team Plough!!
N/a
Comfy bed/pillows and clean.
The location was great, parking was free,.
Water pressure was poor, we were top floor. Trying to get in to check in was hard. There was a skylight window we couldn’t open as there was no stock/pole to open it.
I stayed at The Plough for three nights while working in the area and had a very comfortable and enjoyable stay. The staff were exceptionally helpful, nothing was ever too much trouble and they made me feel genuinely welcome throughout. A special mention goes to Conner and the rest of the team, who were particularly friendly and accommodating during my visit. The room was clean, well-maintained and kept to a high standard throughout my stay. I also appreciated the generous supply of tea, coffee, and biscuits provided. I dined in the bar restaurant and really enjoyed the food, especially the fish and chips which were excellent. Overall, I had a very pleasant stay and would happily return in the future.

Very nice, clean and very comfortable
Nothing
Bedrooms beautiful, clean,well equipped.
Having to use the fire escape to enter the hotel after 22:00. Also leaving before 10:00, in the morning climbing downstairs with suitcases.
The room was great, everything was clean and the bed was very comfortable
The check-in instructions were terrible, we were shown our room and given a key and then left, that would not have been a problem if the access to the rooms was not so difficult after the bar closed or if we'd even been told you couldn't access the room from the reception or bar area. We were almost left without a place to stay as we could not access our room when we returned at 23.30 and the only key fob we could find wouldn't let us into the hotel. Luckily we got help from the bar tender at the pub across the road who informed us there had been others in the past that have had similar trouble and allowed us to wait in the pub until we found a resolution, We tried calling all the numbers we could find and she tried a personal contact she had but could get no answers. In the end I saw another couple in their room and had to knock on their window to get them to let us in. The night access is up the fire escape stairway and They showed us a second key fob located on a railing behind you when you were facing the door. In the morning the main stairway and exit was locked off and we had to just leave the key in the door of our room and leave via the fire escape. My wife was very worried about where we would end up when we couldn't access our room as we were both unfit to drive by the end of the night, our keys were in our room, in fact we were very lucky to finally get access and even then feel bad for the couple who we had to disturb after midnight to let us in.
The room was clean. But got nothing affter after the first day.
The fire escape to get out of the hotel in the morning to go out for breakfast as the hotel was locked until after 10 .
