Great position and views
Very tired accommodation and could do with an update Bedding was clean, poor pillows, very flat Basic breakfast Restaurant very basic menu Staff very nice
Room was clean and beds comfortable
Breakfast was lpoor
It’s in a perfect position overlooking Carlyon Bay. There are seats outside, or armchairs inside huge windows that enable you to sit peacefully at any time of day and just admire the views. Owner and staff were lovely, the food was good. The bedrooms were spacious, comfortable and extremely keen.
Nothing.
The property is dated, but the views are timeless! The staff are generous and helpful. I would definitely book again for the location. But, if the property wasn't located with the epic scenery, I wouldn't prioritise another stay. It's located along a gorgeous walk on the Coastal path to Charlestown, with several restaurants available.
Everything is just very dated. The breakfast was ok but not for the health conscious: the yogurt was all high sugar vs. a non-sugar/greek option, or another healthy choice like fruit or hard-boiled eggs. The snack station is equally lacking in healthy options. The chef was away for the evening I stayed, which I didn't know so didn't have a lot of options immediately in the vicinity. The on-site option was pizza, which was also not an option for me due to healthly eating preferences.
An excellent hotel situated on the cliff top with superb views of St Austell bay. Our sea view room was roomy, well appointed and spotlessly clean, The bathroom was also well appointed and spotless. The room was serviced each day to a very high standard which was appreciated. We had dinner in the restaurant on two of the evenings of our stay and the food was reasonably priced and delicious. Breakfast was simple and nice, but we would have liked a cooked breakfast option, even with a supplement. The coastal path runs in front of the hotel and we made use of that to walk to Charlestown harbour which is well worth the effort (10 mins down the cliffs). In the other direction Carlyon Bay beach is a 15 minute walk, it is sandy with some nice food and coffee huts. The staff in the hotel are friendly and helpful, we enjoyed chatting to them. We would definitely stay there again if we were going to Cornwall.
Its location overlooks the ocean, a private road … so no traffic noise
There is nothing not to like
View from our bedroom was fabulous. Food was great. Location was good as it was close to several tourist spots, ie Eden project and Charlestown
The room was incredible and the staff were very friendly from the moment we arrived. The owner, George, greeted us as we arrived a bit late and our interactions with him definitely contributed to a wonderful stay. 10/10 will definitely visit again.
There was nothing to dislike about our stay whatsoever.
Beautiful setting and hotel building. Staff so helpful beyond the expectations. Would recommend to anyone.
Can’t really say there was reason for criticism.
Amazing location. Great views.
The building is very dated, needs a refurb but has a lot of potential. Breakfast was included but very basic, again a lot of potential.
Spectacular View, very helpful and friendly staff especially the lady Receptionist and the owner, complimentary breakfast was unexpected as it wasn’t meant to be included according to our booking. It was very basic, (cereals, toast, yoghurt, coffee and tea), but as we never expected it was nice touch. We will definitely return 😊
Can’t really find anything, but perhaps the car park could do with levelling up a bit as it’s quite bumpy. However that is cosmetics and absolutely just a suggestion.
A nice, quiet location close to local amenities and close to a stunning beach. The view from the hotel was superb and the food was very good value for money.
My single room wasn't aired enough possibly and there was a smell coming out of the wooden wardrobe.
colazione
I liked the lovely view - I had a direct look over the sea by Charlestown. There are also two coastal paths closely by where you can walk to two different beaches, which was very nice. The room had a TV in which was nice for a light watch (I hadn't watched live TV in a while, so was a nice change for me!). I liked the light complimentary breakfast (toast with condiments, fruit, yoghurt, cereals and tea and coffee). However other breakfast items aren't available to order e.g. Eggs, bacon etc. I liked the (mostly) friendly staff - they were great about explaining things, and accommodating for me and my needs.
The hallways were a bit narrow and a teensy bit difficult to move down. There is no lift to go to the upper floors, which makes it a struggle if you have mobility issues or heavy luggage. The bedsheets were clean but smelled quite stale, like not enough detergent was used to wash them. The mattress was also a little stiff, which I didn't mind too much at first but was difficult to sleep on from the second night (after lots of walking at the nearby Eden Project!). I didn't like the very dirty bathroom, especially the shower. It had lots dirt and grime between the tiles. It looked like it hadn't been cleaned properly for a while. It wasnt built in dirt either - it could easily have come off with a cleaning spray and brush. I didn't like the hotels policy of no takeaways - you also weren't allowed to bring cutlery to your room to eat snacks bought from the supermarket. One staff member was very rude when I asked to take a teaspoon for some tea in my room, and insisted I use the wooden stirrers instead (which aren't good for removing teabags). The location can be difficult to get to if you're travelling via public transport - the nearest bus is about 10 minutes walk away, but it can run infrequently.
Position to coastal path and beaches
Though comfortable and clean the room I was in needs updating
Location is stunning, fantastic view from the front
Incredibly dated room and communal areas, damp, fire doors that don’t shut, poor state of repair throughout, missed cleaning, cracked bath, dirty shower seal, gunk coming out from the plug hole, stained chair, tiny tv with no remote, light fitting with 3 different bulbs and only 2 working, incredibly basic continental breakfast “buffet” consisting of cereal, tinned fruit and a half hearted offer to make toast. Some staff friendly, but one told us we can’t eat our breakfast outside to enjoy the view (the one good thing about the hotel). Didn’t expect too much for the price which is very good for the area - we would have accepted dated but clean & comfortable, however it is well below standard and we didn’t stay the second night as it spoiled the start of the trip and made us feel uncomfortable. My complaint wasn’t really heard by the receptionist, certainly didn’t seem shocked. Since heard it’s being demolished for housing which is a shame, but probably for the best. It’s criminal a place in this location has been left to rack and ruin,as it could be spectacular.
I enjoyed my stay at the Porth Avallen Hotel. The view from the hotel was nice and its location is very convenient as its not too far from the nearby Tesco and other shops/restaurants. The staff were really accommodating and ensured that if I needed anything, to just ask. The Wi-Fi was fast and reliable as it never cut off or showed signs of interference at all.
Although what was available was fine, as I'm on a plant based diet, it would have been good if there were more plant based options for breakfast and dinner.
Pre dinner drinks on the terrace with the most beautiful view every evening and eating outside one evening.
Breakfast could have been better. We only had the cereal and toast option with tinned peaches, but that was our choice.
Friendly, helpful owner
Bedside table light reported as faulty on visit a week before still did not work.
Nice old building interesting. Bedroom not over large nice bathroom with bath and walk-in shower comfortable bed nice balcony with views overSt Austell bay. The staff lady was very nice and seemed to do everything.
There was very little staff, the tv was a flatscreen but quite an early model. The dining was a little restricted and taken in the bar area . The food was unexciting and the breakfast advertised as ‘continental’ was cereals, toast, tinned peaches and yoghurt tea coffee and juices. No meats, bread, croissants, cheese or pastries.
Die wunderschöne Lage.
Frühstück sehr übersichtlich Toast, abgepackte Marmelade abgepackte Butter,Dosenpfirsiche, Cerealien, aromatisierter Joghurt, Wasser, Milch, Fruchtsaft.
The location
Poor customer service Rude man at the bar
The view, albeit one of the windows was ‘blown’.
The mattress was very uncomfortable - I could feel the springs and had to put a blanket inbetween the mattress and the sheet. The decor requires improvement, not only because it is old and dated but it’s very untidy in places and marked in others. The two winged chairs were dirty. The wardrobe had a broken handle. In the bathroom, the bath panel was cracked and there was a double sink with one pair of taps both having blue indicators for cold and the other pair two red indicators for hot!! One of the double glazed units was blown impairing the view to the bay, which was the best thing about this room and indeed hotel overall. The ‘continental’ breakfast was underwhelming, a choice of 3 simple cereals, tinned peaches, toast (that you had to work for) diluted orange juice and yogurts. Tea and coffee was left in insulated jugs that were barely warm. The room in which we ate was in poor condition.
Everything
Location amazing. Ten minute walk along the coastal path to Charleston. Reception staff lovely. Bar, restaurant and outside area was lovely.
We booked two rooms. One was fine, bit of damp on the wall but view amazing. The other room, a single room smelt of damp. The bedside light didn’t work. There was no plug in the sink and the shower didn’t work. Staff on reception very apologetic, but very disappointing as left at 10am that morning so couldn’t shower or wash.
You pay for the view, and if you remember that then you can live with the things that dont come up to par. In Room 6 the view is spectacular. The location is ideal to access the SW coastal path down to Charlestown or Carlyon Bay beach. The fish and chips as an evening meal would highly recommend (although pricey). The peacefulness is lovely. The room was clean.
There are some tired furnishings, and the radiators could do with some improving.. The included buffet breakfast is so basic its like stepping back in time. Don't expect any pastries, or if you want cooked you pay extra. Whilst the rooms are no smoking you can smoke in the grounds, so lots of fag ends in the car park which look unsightly. Also when people smoke under your open windows its a shame to have to close them
Location and the views were beautiful. Lovely and quiet
Location beautiful
The view was amazing
Felt like I'd gone back to 1985 as the place needs updating. Bathroom had mould in it and breakfast was laughable. The orange juice was definetly watered down and only had the option of toast or cereal.
The breakfast consisted of a choice from three plastic containers with labels stuck on the front Cornflakes, Brandflakes, Muesli. Yoghurt strawberry or mango in a bowl with ice under individual strawberry jam or marmalade coffee in jugs tinned peaches toast 1 and a half slices per person didn't try cooked breakfast which was £15 and had to be ordered by 5pm night before as did the buffet breakfast.
The view from bedroom window which was the sea and coast line
Very clean
Colazione scarsissima, posizione buona
Location and view are amazing
The paint has peeled off the wall in the corner due to dampness.
The position on the cliff top over looking the sea
Property condition, black mould spores in the first room I was allocated to, electrical issues in the second room, had to move to a third room. Property very tired and run down both externally and internally . One member of staff covering reception and the bar so sometimes a long wait to be served. Was verbally abused by the owner when I highlighted the concerns with the rooms. He was rude, aggressive and racist.
Die Lage
Das Bad
The setting was absolutely beautiful and perfect
Old building but it was set out nice to have breakfast sat looking at the sea amazing
The location
Too many stairs, the breakfast was too late in the day as we had to leave really early, plus it wasn't a cooked breakfast, it was only toast.
The breakfast was good but you can add a little more to it, eg eggs, bacon etc
Sehr schwach.Zimmer sehr in die Jahre gekommen.
Absolutely stunning location, the view of the bay from our large sea view room was just incredible. It is an old building, with some great period features. The downstairs reception and lounge area was very pleasant and comfortable . The gardens were pretty and looked well looked after. The staff were all lovely and helpful with the exception of what I presumed was the owner who did not make us feel welcome at all. We rather quickly nicknamed him Basil!
The property and the room are looking dated and in need of some tlc. The room was clean and bedding and towels were also fresh and clean. I didn’t mind the old furniture in the room, but the sink and the bath were both cracked. The light fitting was coming away from the ceiling. There was a sign in the bathroom asking you not to use the bath due to a boiler problem , looking back at other reviews this sign has been there for at least 8 months. We were told that they were too busy for cooked breakfast so it would be continental only which was fine, but this consisted of just toast a choice of cereal and a large bowl of tinned peaches, the same peaches were put out 3days running. We ordered food one evening which took one and half hours to come out, it was poor quality and very expensive.
The view from the rooms balcony.
The complete mess the owner and his staff made with issuing us with our room key. No room key when we booked in as the key was missing. Got told a key would be cut but it wasn’t. No apology from the owner.
It is located in a beautiful place, the view and the terrace are very worth it.,the staff service is very polite and nice
Unfortunately, there was mold visible on the wall in the room, there was a musty smell, it was very difficult for me to breathe and I was very disappointed
The location was fantastic and that was it
Basil Faulty eat your heart out, because the owner of this hotel mad him look like a saint., his people skills are shocking to the point of dam right rude, our first evening there we are pretty sure he was drunk. Breakfast a continental apparently (which we should be grateful for, according to the owner) was abysmal, toast, yogurt, cereal (cornflakes, branflakes or muesli) and tinned peaches was it, no fresh fruit, pastries, cold meats, cheeses & not hot food. On one morning there was only toast, bran flakes or muesli available despite asking for the missing items to be refilled. We booked dinner for 6pm, we finally had our orders taken at 7.30pm by the owner and our food served at 8.30pm. Although the food was OK it was very over priced for what we received, combined with the service we didn't eat there again. As I have said the owner is shocking, he insisted we put our drink on our room and was not happy when some of us wanted to pay there and then, at tge end of our stay we asked to settle our bill the night before as we were going to leave early, this was a huge inconvenience to the owner who asked us why we couldn't wait until the morning,The rooms are dated and need a complete refurbishment, our bed was like sleeping on concrete while our friends room needed several repairs, there mayress was so old the called it the banana bed as it had a clear dent in the middle, when laying down there feet was almost above there head it was that bad. I can go on for hours listing all the problems with the hotel and all would of been forgivable had the owner not been rude with about as much charm, customer service as a flip flop, intact a flip flop would out class him any day of the week. I have pictures to back up the state of the rooms and I think you can gather from various other reviews the owner is the main problem . Would I stay here again? absolutely not, a night in the car is more appealing.
location, view aspect from bar and breakfast room
very tired and outdated and falling apart in places, breakfast table for continental very limited with lots of things missing or empty and long wait for service
Location is exceptional and the reception staff were very cheerful and friendly.
Breakfast was dire 😢 just cereal and yoghurt. Toast was burnt. Service was very slow. Hotel needs some TLC. It was clean and the bed was fairly comfy, however, thats about it. It feels like its still in the 1980s with the decor. Did not feel comfortable having to leave our room key on the main unmanned reception desk when we left for the evening, as it was left accessible so anyone could pick it up and enter our room.
Lovely quiet location with an excellent view
It was further from St Austell than we thought, perhaps a little isolted
The location and view were stunning.
The staff, the room, the service, the cost. Every time we would ask for something, it would always get forgotten or they wouldn’t be able to help. Clearly the place has seen better days judging from the photos years ago they had on display.
The room had mould, I left on the first night and asked for a refund. This was refused
The hotel, dirty, mouldy and should not be open due to health and safety reasons
Charmant an toller Lage
Great location, really liked the hotel overall
A very strict rule against bringing takeaway food into the hotel. I wouldn’t do that anyway, but I found it a bit odd when one day I walked in and the manager immediately asked me if it was me who had been bringing takeaway food in. I thought this was rude. Presumably I looked suspicious because I had a shopping bag (containing a beach towel and a book).
The hotel was beautiful and the view was amazing.
Nothing.
Bahnreisende sollten nichts erwarten.
Stunning view ☑️ Attentive friendly staff ☑️ Cold Peroni ☑️ Food ok
Small portions half a bowl of soup which was delicious wanted more Burger and chips deserved a side salad Room dated but didn’t matter no bottles of water 🥵or biscuits
The manager was so rude. We left after one night of a two night stay
Great location, lovely views and central to all the places we visited Food very very good and staff were very helpful a really nice comfortable place to stay definitely return next year
Nothing
It was a lovely hotel on a quiet road, with a beautiful view of the sea from the front. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable and there was plenty of parking.
Perhaps a fan in the room would have been nice, as the weather was exceptionally hot.
The location was easily accessible and had beautiful views. It was very central so it didn't take long to get to local places as well as places further away. The staff were very friendly and there was always someone available to help answer any questions we had. They were accommodating and curtious to everyone. I would highly recommend staying here and we would gladly go again.
Good location and room with sea view. Plenty of free and easy parking. Good location but beach not easily accessible
Everything else, not in the likes. Facilities poor. Very basic and limited tea and coffee. Room was stifling hot and no fan. Apart from the sea view, the room had nothing else, no pictures and the double glazing had failed, so lower windows wrre misty. It was noisy from early each morning. Banging, clattering, loud voices outside, crunching of gravel by people walking and car tyres, as the rough carpark also at front of house. No breakfast included. Overall poor value for money. Moody manager. Beach not easily accessible from hotel. Note; exit room by 10am.
The location is superb and the views across the bay are stunning
The chairs in our room were badly stained and dirty, to the extent that we didn't even want to leave our clothes on them, never mind sit on them. The divan base was torn in several places which really just needed a valance to cover it but a lot of it felt like the owners aren't bothered. Breakfast was very poor. We certainly wouldn't go back.
I liked the amazing view from our bedroom window and when sitting on terrace
poor choice of breakfast - no cooked breakfast and cold items didn't vary
Position of hotel is excellent and view wonderful.
The car park is rough and dusty; room keys and directions to them given at Reception but no help with bags offered. I am 80. Room 34 was small and airless even for a single room, with mould evident on the ceiling of the tiny bathroom, a radiator leaking into a plastic container, no plug in the washbasin, no tea/coffee facility. The bed was so hard and lumpy that I did not get to sleep until 3.30am having turned around to put feet where head should be. After breakfast I complained and was moved to a twin room which was much better, although the television could not get a signal and the shower was in an old corner bath and functioned off the taps which had to be adjusted for heat of water. The bed had a mattress topper on it, which is probably what was missing from the one in the single room. We had supper in the hotel on Sunday. Fish very overcooked. When I got home I found I had not packed a top which I had been wearing the previous day. I had forgotten that I hung it in a wardrobe. I immediately rang the hotel and someone went to check the room. It was not there. A final infuriation to add to the least pleasant stay I’ve ever had in any hotel anywhere. No financial concession for that first, ghastly night.
The location and view over Carlyon Bay is exceptional
The overall service was poor and breakfast was not available unless PRE-BOOKED the night before!!
Position food and very friendly staff
The hotel has lovely sea views and the reception staff do a great job in what must be trying circumstances.
We had the misfortune to encounter the owner who was reluctant to fix the window in our room which malfunctioned just before we were due to go out: I went to close it and it partially collapsed. As there was no safe in the room, overall security had been compromised. On asking the owner about this, my wife was met with a "what do you want me to do about it?" attitude and a reluctance to even look at the problem. After some back and forth, he asked whether my wife "had a pot of gold" before assuring her that there was no crime in the area, despite Sea Road possessing million-pound properties. We were not reassured although he did fix the window during our absence. The room itself had dated and faded decor; the bedding consisting of a top sheet and a blanket. We didn't partake of the bar nor the restaurant and didn't bother with the included continental breakfast on the morning after our arrival. The receptionist told us that a cooked breakfast could be ordered for £12.50 a head but we decided againist. Indeed, the hotel seemed very quiet and we didn't see anyone dining or using the bar. Upon reflection, we decided to cut our losses and checked-out the next day; cutting our losses and moving to the much-better Pier House In Charlestown. We were later informed that the hotel had been sold and would be demolished. The staff were well-acquainted with the shitty attitude of the owner and seemed resigned to their impending redudancy.
View and location faultless staff really lovely rooms were clean and towels where soft large and clean very white
Tired decor and in need of serious update. Beds two put together no mattress topper to assist with join were also very hard and uncomfortable if you have back-issue. Buffet breakfast was basic and not a lot of choice.
Location was very short distance to the sea with a great view from the front of the hotel
The rooms are at the back with no view. Corridors are worn and dirty. Room smelled mouldy and parts of the shower was. Bed was just hard springs.. Chef did not turn up for breakfast next morning, no receptionist either just a worried young female waiter not knowing what to do. I booked elsewhere the next two nights despite this being non refundable.
Our room was lovely and the position could not have been better. We loved it's old fashioned charm and would have liked to have spent more time relaxing on the terrace, enjoying the view, but as mentioned there was only hard picnic furniture. We would have spent more money in the hotel if they served coffee/tea throughout the day and possibly light lunches.
The buffet breakfast was poor, especially the coffee, also when I asked for coffee after dinner it was a big deal to turn the machine on and it took at least 30 minutes to heat up! The gardens and terrace were beautiful but there was no comfortable seating.
The cooked breakfast that is an extra £12.50 was awful, the egg had been cooked for so long it was hardly recognisable as an egg. The sausage looked like it had been boiled, the bake beans seemed to be a spot the bean competition, staff said I don’t blame you when I cancelled our following mornings cooked breakfast and seemed embarrassed. So staff great but horrendous owner
The bedroom was clean and bed comfy
Wallpaper peeling, chip board covering damp patches, never seen a continental breakfast with no pastries or fresh fruit (just tinned peaches) and two halves of toast is extreme rationing. Bar ran out of cider, bar tender could have been from faulty towers… extremely rude nothing to laugh about here
Läget och utsikten!
Nedgånget hotell, endast varmvatten i duschen.
Great views, great location, good parking.
No towel in bathroom.
Location was fantastic, Staff and Owner very helpful.
Excellent location for the South West Coast Path and wonderful view across the bay. Lovely soft towels and large room.
Breakfast was mediocre and the cooked breakfast particularly poor - couldn't cook eggs properly and burnt the toast. The general staff were friendly and tried to be helpful but it was very unprofessional of the manager/owner to have an argument with a guest in front of other residents.
Lovely receptionist who deserves more. Good evening meals.
We were checking in with the receptionist, who was very professional and had booked us in for evening meals when someone (who could have been the handyman) was muttering " no takeaways in the bedrooms". It turns out he was the owner. We had asked for storage for road bikes when booking but were offered a railing fence to padlock bikes to outside. When asking the owner for storage somewhere inside he said "we're not the Marriott you know" Nice drink and food all served by the owner in a tribute to the style of Basil Fawlty. Breakfast was the worst of a 14 day trip through the country. Could have passed as a pre school breakfast from the 70s but not acceptable now. Cleanliness level is low. Dirt, food and mess on the base of every table in breakfast room despite not having been used. Cleaning is not a priority it seems like a cursory vacuum is about all the hotel gets. Hotel was probably last decorated and upgraded about 30 years ago. Visit for entertainment purposes to see how hotels were run back in the day.
Stunning views of the bay, easy access to Charlestown and other places of interest. Plenty of parking on site. Clean if a little tired room
Continental breakfast very basic and cooked breakfast not good value for money. Very low pressure shower
The staff were really friendly, check in was a breeze, great free parking, good location (easily accessible). I hadn't realised a basic breakfast was included, which was a nice bonus! Good value for money. When I stayed, St Austell was in a fog cloud, but the views over the bay would be STUNNING on a clear day. I got back fairly late and the property was still easy to access via a different entrance. I'd definitely stay again for a night!
Attention to detailed cleaning is required. There was a lot of dust and cobwebs in the room. The room would have benefitted from blackout blinds/curtains, as a lot of light came in at sunrise. I was woken up by a bin lorry at 0500 🙈 There was no hot water during my stay, but I was told about this at check in. Not a huge deal as I'd showered before I checked in, but would've been nice to have a warm shower after being at a gig the night before.
Everything
Breakfast could have been better
Marvellous outlook and location Pleasant ambience and staff
Some maintenace required eg wall damp rouhhly painted over and window unclosable.
Staff very pleasant. Great views overlooking the sea
The hotel is in a prime position, clean and comfortable, breakfast was good, cant comment about the evening meal. Hotel has a bar. The only thing I would say it could do with a make over, my room had seaview, and all the facilities it could benefit from decorating.
Friendly and helpful staff on front desk Room clean with nice sheets
Radiators not well regulated. Room cold o n arrival. Radiators only turned on for short period and then boiling hot. Restaurant food not good.Expensive for what it was. Limited selection of wine and expensive
Friendly staff. Clean.
Food a bit average.
George and his team were very friendly and professional at all times, nice relaxing break even if the weather wasn't ideal.
