The location
The hotel needed modernisation
The bed was comfortable
The smell of smoke in the corridors. The carpet was rather dirty too unfortunately. Needs a make over. Staff were lovely.
Good value had what I needed
Lovely choice of food. Just one little niggle: the oat milk for my cereal came in ‘pyramid’ shapes which when opened squirted everywhere!
See above!
The room was comfortable and cozy. The staff were pleasant and helpful. The food was tasty hot and priced very reasonably Plenty of parking is available. Local town with other means to feed yourself.
Very comfortable beds, evidence that they are updating some of the rooms. Staff very friendly and in a good location.
Comfortable bed
Loud room, people walking up and down corridors, talking, slamming doors etc, could hear all. Bottom floor. Car noise and people on street
Everything
Nothing
Location was great! Just what we needed for a one night stay on our journey through England.
Check-in was easy and room was clean
Nothing
Comfortable and convenient for Froyle Park
Mattresses could be more comfortable and an extra pillow needed
A decent sized hotel, a bit tired in decor but efficient friendly service. Everything was clean and plenty of parking
The bed mattress was not that comfortable and quite a flat single pillow
Lovely ground floor room. Great size room
Everything was satisfactory. The bed was comfortable.
There was some noise from a wedding party.
Staff nice,beds comfortable.
Rooms a little dirty and dated, showers very temperamental.
The room was large
Tv too small No aircon Too many stairs an trips Staff mildly unhelpful Breakfast ended too early Springs in bed dug into our flesh
Staff lovely,beds very comfortable.
Rooms a little dirty and dated. Shower not the best. Car park lights so bright they lit up the whole room even with the curtains closed.
Bon emplacement, hôtel confortable. Chambre calme propre et spacieuse
Oubli de faire la chambre et de changer les serviettes (séjour de 2 nuits) La qualité du petit déjeuner a un peu baissé depuis notre passage de l’année dernière
We asked to stay in room 3 as it is much easier with our dog being able to access outside if needed . This was available for us .
The grouting in the shower could do with a really good clean ( bit mouldy )
Lots of character
Needs some updating - but staff were superb
Clean tidy property
No heating in room or aircon
Friendly and helpful staff
Location was perfect. Breakfast was nice but one member of staff on wasn’t fair in them as it was extremely busy and they struggled to keep up with top ups on the buffet, serving orders and tidying tables.
The carpets in the bedroom and stairs are in need of an update. They were clean enough just tired looking.
It was exactly what I expected for the money. The room was filthy and the breakfast was so bad that we decided not to eat it on the second morning. Even though it was paid for. .
There was no need for the room to be so dirty or the breakfast to be as poor as it was.
L’accueil, le décor très austennien, chambre spacieuse et lits très confortables.
Rien
I like its proximity to the Railway Station. It has a decent sized Car Park . The Bar is well priced and the food is of good quality and quantity and also fairly priced. The staff work hard to keep things going even at busy times like Weddings.
No AC.
Recently had a lovely stay here whilst attending a wedding which was in a most stunning location. Staff seemed lovely and helpful. Room was lovely and very clean, maybe a little dated in places but I enjoyed my stay. Food was delicious at the wedding so was disappointed that breakfast wasn't as nice. No eggs on offer, bacon was awful and the hash browns very dry and seemed overcooked, such a ket down.
The room was large and well furnished. The bathroom was clean and bigger than I expected. Dinner in their dining room was tasty, and the location was great for seeing Jane Austen attractions.
Very clean, and the staff were all friendly and helpful
The breakfast service on Saturday was poor, with not much food, and hardly any seating. The staff were very apologetic, but obviously couldn’t cope with the busy service, once more food was brought out, it was lovely
Great position close to the train station and city centre. Good parking space Room is big
The bed is not comfortable and some works should be done in the bathroom (sink was cracked) The window also needs some repair
Very convenient for where we needed to be and to town
The employees were polite and attentive however, the property is tired and needs a redecoration. The cleaning was definitely hampered by the need to redecorate, grubby on the doors, carpets stained and the table top in our room was sticky.
Location
Road noise as I had to leave windows open because of the heat and the hotel has no air conditioning and a small desk fan
Central for Alton
No usb plugs in our room and small tv.
Location to Portsmouth when coming off Ferry perfect. Safe parking for our motorcycles
TLC required in room.
Breakfast could have been better. Toaster needed replacing. Food left out too long.
See above
The property was good but we had ants in our room
Ants in our room
Cosy little hotel on the high street with modern conveniences. The downside is that you cannot get any food once the bar shuts in the afternoon. I never understand why a simple sandwich can’t be produced as you always have at least one member in the kitchen.
I didn't like that restaurant and bar closed and nothing was mentioned upon arrival only when I was going to use them
The location was great. Close to Waitrose and the station
My bathroom was mouldy.
Our first room shower flooded the bathroom on the first two mornings of our stay and we were moved to another room. The room was in need of upgrade in a few areas eg cracked sink in bathroom. Bed was comfortable and we didn’t have breakfast.

Friday. Staff, spacious and clean room
Nothing, it was perfect
Location is easy to access Pretty garden Clean
Staff mixed up several room bookings - resulted in entering pre occupied rooms and hassling guests. The team made no effort for amends. Did not care about the poor service. No air conditioning or fans for hot rooms in heat wave
Staff were friendly
No air con hot and stuffy one small fan in room no other facilities like a little fridge , we had a broken kettle , very out dated rooms for nearly £100 a night , don’t think you get what you pay for
Clean, comfortable & quiet. Helpful friendly staff.
Comfortable and clean, friendly welcoming staff, nice rooms, good breakfast.
It's a shame they don't do lunches
It was well staffed and clean. The breakfast buffet was very good, well stocked & well organised. The ground floor room was very nice with a little patio outside. Good location & nice to have car parking on site. It felt very secure at night.
The bed mattress was a bit' sunken' in the middle but I did sleep well anyway. The bathroom looked a little dated, but it was functional.
Staff were excellent
The wooden blinds on both windows were covered in dust. Window sills were dusty. The outside ledge of each drawer dusty. Phone and TV dusty.
Breakfast was good. Hotel has lovely original Georgian features.
Attic room small and very hot. Found a Twix wrapper behind bedside locker which indicated room not thoroughly cleaned. Overall, not as good as my last stay 10 months ago. Didn't see that we had to hang a card on door if we wanted the room cleaning.
Matras hobbelig.
Hotel had gone to extent of providing a fan in room in unprecedented heat for UK weather. Staff were very pleasant and welcoming. Room was very clean, well provisioned and comfortable.
No issues.
Worn, superior room does not look and feel like one, parking strreet light is directly on the balcony, so heavy light pollution, with blinds shut, no airflow, noisy fan, broken shower head. Mattress is wobbly and soft, when one turns it throws up the 2nd person sleeping on it. Person in next door room had a series of phone calls at 4:30, that felt like someone is talking in your room, so crazy thin walls. Total sleepless night. 0 value for the money.
The welcome I received , the cleanliness of room and location of hotel were good.
The hotel could do with installation of a lift for guests.
The location to the station just around the corner was great when you’ve got luggage. Check-in and staff were friendly. The room was very spacious and even though it was very hot a fan was provided which was quite adequate. Good supply of tea and coffee facilities.
Location and car parking
The room was hot, but it was 30 degrees outside. It was also rather a small room. I have stayed in nicer places for less.
I have stayed at the Alton House Hotel several times now, and each time I have been very impressed. I am always made to feel very welcome, the staff are extremely helpful, friendly and efficient. My room is always what I have requested and very comfortable. I can honestly say that Alton House is like a second home and the staff are my extended family.
The staff were very friendly and understood our disappointment in the room and breakfast. They respected our request for a refund as had to book another hotel for additional night.
Room in need of full refurbishment. old carpets, bathroom, television, no sockets by the bed to charge phones etc The room just needed an overall refurbishment. The breakfast was terrible, suggest use Premier Inn to bench mark their service and bedrooms.
Really nice place
Not equipped to deal with hot weather. Single glazed windows and a fan which did little to help
Really convenient hotel for train station and local high street with lovely italian restaurant and pubs and cafes and local farmers market on Saturday. The rooms were clean but no Aircon and good size.
No Aircon.
I contacted the hotel a couple of times prior to our stay and found them to be very helpful. The room was clean, and the bed was comfortable. It is quite dated but it's an old hotel. It didn't worry us, as we worry more about cleanliness. The shower was amazing!!! The only slightly frustrating thing was, we wanted a coffee in the morning, but the person in the breakfast room informed us he didn't know how to make it. So we had to go into the town to grab some. First World problems. I would definitely stay here again.
Decor
Slightly jaded decoration in parts
Stayed one night and that was plenty for the price! It was a hot day but the room was absolutely boiling overnight with a fan provided that couldn't be felt unless within a meter of it. It seemed to use so much energy to be the loudest fan known that there was no energy left for it to blow air. The bath filled up with water when using the shower due to failed drainage and there were difficulties trying to flush the toilet. The rooms are dated and old with flattened carpet, a mattress with more craters than the moon. The positive was the friendly, helpful and approachable staff; if only the facilities matched their quality.
Location
Cleanliness in bathroom atrocious. Picture taken.
Dirty. Very very hot. Shower not worked. The fan was not good. T V too small. No lift.
Every thing about above.
Very clean & nice grounds
No help in carrying bags up 2 stairways
Staff seemed nice and helpful.
We came down for a friend’s party and stayed here as it was the only place available. It served a purpose. Staff are fine but there was a wedding on and absolutely no where for us to park. I don’t think they should take bookings if they can’t provide parking. Breakfast was extremely average. Rooms are drab. Outside the front of the hotel was the only place we could sit outside. The tables were dirty and there were fag butts on the ground. The place needs some tlc and a bit of an update to freshen it up. You pay for what you get!
Rooms are ok cheap and dated. Not a problem as cheap and close to work. We have stayed with them often. My problem is with the car park. It’s states it free as long as you put your details in. That we did. No problem. 3 months later get two fines for the car park that is owned by hotel. £170 each straight from debt collection agency no previous letters or contact. So £340 with no chance to appeal and no help from the hotel. Even though the hotel can prove we stayed with them. Manger just keeps saying we can’t do anything
Cheap, functional hotel that does budget weddings. Reception staff are helpful and friendly. They could do with a nice bar area with terrace or seating in the garden at the back. There was a wedding on so we had to sit out at the front. This is particularly grotty. The tables were dirty with old glasses left out and the floor covered in fag butts. The rooms are very drab but serves a purpose if you are just passing through. This is not somewhere you would go for a luxury weekend away. Very, very average breakfast buffet. This is somewhere that with some refurbishment and redecorating could probably be quite nice.
Clean ans spacious room
Nothing
Great value for money, very helpful friendly staff. Have stayed previously and will be staying again.
We enjoyed our two night stay at the Alton House Hotel - a good choice. An excellent location. A tasty, good value evening meal. Helpful staff on Reception. Our room was clean and comfortable.
A lift would have been helpful for the top rooms ie in 35 - but would probably be impractical. People in adjoining room were rather noisy, but settled down… eventually!
Although very tired the hotel is adequate
Bright car park lights and thin curtains meant that the room was not really dark enough. The hotel is quite tired
Not far from the office
Menu
The hotel was located in a coveneient area for us to stay for an event we were attending.
The towel rail in the bathroom was covered in dust and dirt.
The staff was lovely although quite a few seemed newly employed and lacked experience. Parking was good.
Our room was very small for a double This was very very much compounded by the weather being 35° which is of course no fault of the hotel. The hotel has no air condioned areas. The rooms are certainly not air-conditioned.The hotel had provided a fan which was a big plus but frankly the room was unbearable due not only to the heat but because it was so tiny. Passing by when rooms were being cleaned I saw no rooms as small as ours. Breakfast was not very good - everything ran out and took ages to be refilled. The hotel provided scrambled eggs which I found nasty and even fried eggs had to be separately ordered from the kitchen. The hotel electrics need updating so as to provide sockets near the bed for phone charging.
location, good bar, room size, outside sitting area, proximity to railway station.
no air con (very warm weather), breakfast rather basic.
Great location near the Station and also near the Wey Path walk around the lake.
Air con would be nice - but we did have a fan in the room and also patio doors which opened to a nice seating area which was not too hot. And lovely and cool in the evening.

The staff ! Superb ! Its a really comfortable, clean, welcoming homely hotel. 5 mins to the centre. Not bad price. Zero

First stay at The Alton House Hotel. It was a last minute decision as a music fest was scheduled on the green behind our house. The noise is unbearable as, at 150m distant, all we hear is the drumbeat, louder than our tv. Alton is a very pleasant small town and this hotel exceeded our expectations. We observed none of the minuses raised in some reviews. The hotel is maintained in very good order, the staff are all very cheerful and helpful. Our room, booked late, was perhaps one of the smallest on the second floor of the annexe but had ample space, a very comfortable bed, a good sized ensuite and very clean. Ample parking in front and behind but remember to register the registration. We are planning a return.
Niets
De kamer, het diner, het ontbijt
Great location and friendly staff.
Run down room and hotel. Breakfast was disappointing and room was a little dusty/ unclean.
Location
No air conditioning, but there was an old squeaky fan
Great lo ation and dog friendly.
Room decoration was a little tired but ok. Was charged additional for dogs but was under the impression that this was included when I booked through Booking.com originally.
Location - very quiet
Breakfast was ok, not outstanding
Shower was good and powerful
No aircon. The fan provided was not at all adequate. Cobwebs everywhere. Large stained area on the floor around the toilet. Lots of stairs to climb with all our luggage.
Location and access. Situated on the main road through Alton, so easy to find, very close to the railway station. I suggest if coming by road approach from the London end A31 junction even if coming from further west as I believe the one way system in Alton is not good for traffic wanting the head through from the west. There is a decent sized Waitrose adjacent the station car park. Car parking at the hotel is obviously a hot topic, so make sure you register your vehicle as required. The building is a traditional hotel with stairs, steps fire doors etc. There is no lift. Our room was satisfactory. The shower was one of the best we have had recently. We stayed in a hot spell and the room was warm, There is no air conditioning, but the supplied fan made conditions acceptable. We would have preferred a firmer mattress. We ate in the dining room one evening. The menu is not vast, but the food was good, and, to me, the prices were very competitive for what was delivered. There is a bar with a modest range of drinks. Breakfast is from a serve yourself buffet covering cereals to full English. I would suggest investment in a faster toaster would improve the experience. The staff were good. Overall, if we needed to return to the area, we would happily book to stay here again.
Excellent location if walking to or from the train station. Bus stop is right outside (didn’t notice noise). Good location to walk through town. About 45 minutes walk to Jane Austen House and Chawton House (Chawton House called us a cab back). The bus can be taken through town to cut half the walk as the hotel is at the eastern end of town. The continental breakfast (£9+) was adequate. Comfortable beds and well kept air conditioned room.
Could use a little refresher in upkeep (did not affect our stay). Air conditioning in the building was a little uneven [but only noticed in passageway between buildings]. We were able to leave our bags after check out but they had us put them into a meeting room off the entrance instead of taking them into a dedicated room. There weren’t many food items for vegans (even the oatmeal porridge cups had milk in them).
It was good value gor money. The room was fine although the mattress wasn't as comfortable as I would have liked. Everything was as per the booking site
The mattress wasn't very comfortable
It was good
Nothing really
The staff were lovely and we had a good meal in the hotel that evening.
The room was clean, comfortable and warm, but a little bit shabby.
The room was clean and tidy . Was able to have a room with a shower. Able to access after midnight
Small room
We were made very welcome in a good size comfortable room. There was always someone at Reception to answer questions. We enjoyed an excellent evening meal and two great breakfasts. Everything was pleasant and hassle free!
We were slightly shocked at the lack of any green vegetables on the evening meal menu!
Beds comfy and cheap
Noise going all night from kitchen below. Struggled to sleep, room 23 not the one if you struggle sleeping
Pleasant staff.
This hotel was recommended to me as a fabulous place to stay. It was very disappointing. Attic type room- Bathroom in room had very dirty and torn bathmat - not fit for use. Toilet not cleaned. Nowhere to hang or place items in bathroom Mattress dated. Pillow flat, spare in eves-cupboard the same - Very uncomfortable. Dated furniture. Arrived extremely late for one night - Informed reception and cleaning staff of issues in the morning and shared photos with them.
