Hotel Porta San Mamolo

This place exceeded my expectations so much that I wanted to extend my stay. Didn't, sadly, but I'll be back. The hotel is just inside the old city wall. The unassuming lobby on a small street opens up to a beautiful series of interior courtyards, rooms tucked here and there in private hallways, gorgeous plantings everywhere. The receptionist sent a very nice man with me to find my room and show the features of the property, including 24-hour free water taps (still or sparkling) with carafes to take to your room. We reached my assigned room, which a previous lout had smoked in despite no smoking rules, and they immediately with no fuss moved me to a new and larger room. The rooms have air conditioning, a mini-bar, and nice bathrooms with Bigelow toiletries. All clean and well-maintained. It is a historic collection of buildings, so it's not brand new, but if that's what you wanted, you'd be at a chain hotel outside the centre. Breakfast is a robust buffet in a gorgeous glassed-in breakfast room between two courtyards. You can eat inside, or outside among the palm and pomegranate trees. The buffet has bacon and eggs for the British, cold cuts and rolls for the Germans, cakes and pastries for the Italians, fresh fruit, and made to order and delivered to table coffees, including cappuccini. I slept well, the shower was great, but it was the breakfast table in the garden that I couldn't tear myself away from. Oh, I also reserved an indoor parking spot, which was on the same block as the hotel. It appeared to be a former stable, with vaulted and tiled ceilings. Even my car (with attached bike rack and two bikes) thus spent a very pleasant night at Hotel San Mamolo. There are two appealing-looking restaurants in the same block. I didn't try them and ended up with a sub-par dinner elsewhere. I'm sure I could have gotten good dining advice had I only asked.

The location is great, appx 15 min walk to the city centre, very quiet and calm neighbourhood. Close to the hotel are few restaurants with very high scores. The inner yard and breakfast room is very cozy, lots of trees.

The parking is very expensive - 25 euro per night. The room was very basic but clean. Could be more cozy, on the pictures it was nicer…

Very good location in the city center, situated in old buildings with a small garden. Clean interior and spacious room, helpful staff.

The breakfast room is a bit small for the amount of guests, the variety of the food and drinks could also be improved. If you come by car, be ready to give your keys to the hotel staff, because there are multiple garages under old buildings and a valet driver has to move the cars eventually.

Das Hotel hat die besten Zeiten hinter sich. Ausstattung und Komfort sind alles, aber keine 4 Sterne. Die Zimmerwände sind aus Papier wir konnten unseren Nachbarn bis spät in die Nacht bei allem akustisch begleiten, was er gerade so gemacht hat. An Schlaf war nicht zu denken…

La situation est vraiment appréciable pour rejoindre le centre de Bologne. Un hébergement adapté pour profiter de la tranquillité et du petite jardin extraordinaire, et appréciable en période de canicule.

Une petite table en plus dans la chambre serait la bienvenue.

Sehr nette, saubere Unterkunft in der Nähe des Zentrums, das sehr gut zu Fuß erreichbar ist. Anreise mit dem PKW ist kein Problem, da eine Garage vor Ort verfügbar ist. Der Frühstücksberreich ist eine Orangerie im inneren des Hofes, welche die hektische Stadt vergessen lässt und einen tollen Start in den Tag ermöglicht

Hôtel agréable situé à une dizaine de minutes à pied du centre de Bologne. Il est légèrement excentré, mais cela ne nous a absolument pas gênés : nous avons pu visiter toute la ville à pied très facilement. La literie est particulièrement confortable et nous avons beaucoup apprécié l’excellent petit-déjeuner, varié et servi en extérieur dans un cadre vraiment charmant, qui constitue l’un des vrais points forts de l’hôtel.

Quelques réserves néanmoins au regard du standing annoncé : l’insonorisation entre les chambres pourrait être améliorée et la télévision propose presque exclusivement des chaînes italiennes, sans accès à Netflix ni possibilité de Chromecast. C’est assez peu pratique pour une clientèle internationale et ce sont de petits détails qui dénotent un peu pour un établissement 4 étoiles. Enfin, nous avons trouvé le tarif assez élevé pour Bologne au regard des prestations proposées : c’est finalement notre principal bémol.

Very clean, excellent service, very good breakfast

The hotel is overall nice and the garden is very beautiful. Good breakfast, and the staff were exceptionally helpful, polite and welcoming. On the negative side, I was woken up in the middle of the night by very loud neighbours. The rooms are not well insulated. The lock on my door was also broken/missing, which left me wondering whether the door was actually locked.

Hotel ist sehr ruhig gelegen. Zu Fuss in 5-10min im Stadtzentrum. Frühstücksraum bzw. Orangerie im Innenhof ist sehr schön und idyllisch. Personal sehr freundlich und zuvorkommend. Mit Auto gut erreichbar. Wir würden das Hotel wieder wählen.

I stayed in this hotel multiple times during winter and spring of 2026 when I was visiting the city for work (I tried many other hotels in this price range as well). I think Hotel Porta San Mamolo is one of the absolute best locations the city has to offer. It is a lovely building with a nice little garden and a beautiful/ rich italian breakfast. Especially, the breakfast/ kitchen staff are the nicest. Receptionists are knowledgeable, very professional and helpful. Bologna is a small italian town with not a lot hotels/ bnbs that really understand/ accustomed to handling professionals needs and they may cause small operational complications (no cards, etc.). This hotel has been the nicest place to stay for me by far!

The hotel has a free filtered water tap at the breakfast area which you could fill your own bottles from, the rooms are clean, comfy, spacious and have great Aircon. The staff are very helpful and friendly

Ruhige Lage und toller Garten. Für uns war es auch wichtig, dass das Hotel eine eigene Garage hat. Die 25€ pro Nacht waren in der Lage gerechtfertigt und hat uns den Aufenthalt erleichtert.

Schade, dass es keinen Kaffee oder kleine Snacks am Nachmittag gab.

The location was awesome! About 10 min on foot close to the central area. Hotel staff made arrangements really quick in order to register our car for ZTL entrance. Hotel staff was friendly!

The pictures are quite different from reality. The minibar was extremely small, with barely enough space to store any of our own items. The room also had a noticeable smell of dampness. The location of the A/C unit does not allow it to cool the entire room effectively. The bathroom is in serious need of renovation and, in our opinion, definitely does not meet the standards expected from a 4-star hotel. During our stay, the shower head actually broke off while in use, and the toilet seat was visibly dirty upon our arrival. Soundproofing was another issue, as we could clearly hear guests on the floor above walking around.

Estancia muy agradable. Las instalaciones están muy bien, la zona es súper tranquila y la terraza interior es muy bonita. El desayuno también está bastante bien. Destacar sobre todo la amabilidad de la chica de recepción y del personal del buffet, todos muy atentos y agradables. En general, buena experiencia y muy buen trato por parte del personal.

Como pequeños puntos a mejorar, el suelo de la habitación tenía algunas manchas negras y el colchón estaba un poco deformado. También faltaban enchufes tipo F (Schuko), ya que ninguno de los enchufes de la habitación eran compatibles.

Henkilökunta oli todella ystävällistä ja avuliasta, viihtyisä ja hyvä aamupala puutarhassa. Hotelli rauhallisella alueella muttei liian kaukana keskustasta.

Hotelli ei missään nimessä ole 4 tähden hotelli. Huone oli vanha ja kulahtanut, ei vastannut kuvia. Sängyt olivat todella pehmeät. Huoneessa ei ollut myöskään viinilaseja saati pullonavaajaa.

We chose Hotel Porta San Mamolo because it was located within the old city walls and has private parking. We were not disappointed. The hotel is only a short walk from the city centre which was busy in July with many activities and restaurants/bars to explore. We took an inner city small bus tour and walked to the national art gallery (pinoteca) in the university area which was very interesting. We particularly enjoyed the resaurant Osteria Le Mura right opposite the hotel! Access to the private parking is very tight but hotel staff handle the parking for you.

The breakfast was actually good but the breakfast area was rather busy on the two days we stayed, making it feel crowded and noisy with handling of dishes as well. A minor point really, as our stay was in July!

The hotel was in a good location away from the very centre of town. It was very quiet and had a lovely outdoor area for breakfast which was nice to sit in as it was the coolest part of the day. It was an easy walk into the centre of town and there was a lovely restaurant opposite the hotel. The room was small but comfortable.

Hotel jest cudowny! Niedaleko centrum, pokoje czyste, śniadania obłędne w oranżerii lub ogrodzie. Obsługa pomocna i przemiła. To zdecydowanie więcej niż 4 gwiazdki. Bardzo polecam !

We had a room at first floor, no stairs, just an elevator. We got stucked, but they repaired it next day.

Great location just far enough from main centre. The dining and outdoor space was very pretty. The air conditioning in the room was excellent!

We had issue with noise of plumbing in our room which wasn’t really resolved. It was a Shane as thr room itself was lovely and discos.

Lo staff è stato sempre disponibile, cordiale e pronto ad aiutare per qualsiasi esigenza. Inoltre, la posizione della struttura è ottima, comoda da raggiungere e ideale per gli spostamenti di lavoro, con servizi e collegamenti facilmente accessibili.

L'arredamento delle stanze è funzionale, ma potrebbe essere rinnovato per rendere l'ambiente più accogliente.

Ha una buona posizione, è pulita e ben tenuta in generale. Il giardino interno è molto bello.

Das Frühstück war abwechslungsreich, besonders angenehm war das gute Obstangebot. Die Zimmer waren sehr karg eingerichtet. Es gab kaum Staufläche. Der Aufenthalt im Zimmer diente nur dem Schlafen. Das Personal war nicht nur freundlich, sondern immer hilfsbereit und sorgte bei Beschwerden für gute Lösungen. Die Zeit im üppig bepflanzten Garten und im Gartenhaus haben wir sehr genossen. Außerdem hat die zentrumsnahe Lage uns sehr gefallen.

Zimmerausstattung Die Zimmerausstattung war - siehe oben - für einen mehrtägigen Aufenthalt nicht akzeptabel, aber auch während einer Schlechtwetterperiode - von der wir verschont blieben - kann man sich kaum in einem solchen Zimmer aufhalten.

Solo e unicamente la zona colazione esterna immersa nel verde.

La camera era esterna alla struttura e non era specificato, la camera era sporca , trasandata e il bagno piccolissimo con l’acqua del lavandino che scendeva a goccia!… non c’era ristorante. La posizione è buona perché vicina al centro ma l’hotel è in una zona non esattamente raccomandabile a vedere le persone che stazionavano in strada a pochi metri dall’albergo. Ma un hotel 4 stelle non dovrebbe avere determinate caratteristiche!

We were surprised by getting a better room that we booked - looks like it was suite or smth like that - which contained an additional room with a sofa - we were absolutely in love with that. Breakfasts in the garden were also incredible- very cozy and tasty itself. The staff were also very welcoming. Definitely recommend

Second séjour dans ce très bel hôtel. Très calme. Excellente literie. Petit-déjeuner très varié.

Horaire du petit-déjeuner un peu tôt (jusqu'à 10h). Pour ce deuxième séjour, j'étais logé dans la partie annexe de l hôtel. Tout aussi confortable que l'autre. Cependant pas d'ascenseur, aussi je déplore qu'à mon arrivée la personne qui m'ait accueilli et guidé vers la chambre se soit juste excusée que la chambre ne soit pas accessible via un ascenseur (ce qui en soi n est pas un problème dans un bâtiment ancien) mais qu'il ne m'ait pas apporté son aide pour monter mes lourds bagages. Pas très aidant, ni correct pour un hôtel 4 etoiles. Service de chambre un peu bruyant le matin.

Décoration très sympa, déjeuner très complet et délicieux, emplacement idéal pour visiter la ville à pied.

Nous avons eu chaud pendant la nuit, la clim me fonctionnait pas assez bien pour rafraîchir la chambre.

Que no tuviera ascensor, por lo menos para acceder a la habitación que nos asignaron (al llevar carrito de bebé se nos complicó), pero por lo demás todo perfecto.

The location was superb. Quiet but easy walking to the main square. Loved the gorgeous garden which was a delight to come back to after a day of sightseeing.

Our room was a little on the dark side as the window was slightly hidden behind a wardrobe.

We enjoyed our two-night stay at Hotel Porta San Mamola. It is located on a quiet street within easy walking distance of the Piazza Maggiore and all sites. There are good restaurants close by, and a valet parking option is available. We took advantage of the lovely, shaded courtyard as it was quite hot during our stay in Bologna. The breakfast buffet offers a lot of fresh options. Our room was a spacious suite a few doors down from the main hotel, which was no problem. We arrived early and our bags were stored and later delivered to our room. All staff were friendly and helpful. Overall a good hotel choice.

We liked everything

Quirky building. Individual rooms with lovely bathrooms. A peaceful and cool outside seating area.

I didn’t dislike anything. It is not in the centre of town (which I liked) but some people might prefer to be a bit closer. It was only a 10-15 slow walk.

Location was about 10-11 minutes from Piazza Maggiore. There is a restaurant just outside the hotel on the opposite side of the street and it was very good! Room was clean and a decent size.

The air conditioner was a bit noisy.

Super gelegenes kleineres Hotel, ruhige Lage und trotzdem zentral. Toller Innenhof mit Orangerie zum Frühstücken. Ausgezeichnete Auswahl beim Frühstück. Ca 500 m zum Parkplatz und auch in die Innenstadt. Alles in allem perfekt für einen Städtetrip. Kann ich nur weiterempfehlen.
