The Southern Belle

Location was good. Breakfast had good reviews but our experience was different.Breakfast was cold and definately not served with a smile. Having politely complained that the breakfast was cold twice the response was very passive aggressive from the member in staff in charge and serving. She showed her irritation by slamming an HP sauce bottle on our table when my husband wanted condiments. Room was comfortable but no fridge and windows did not open. Bed was comfy and bathroom was very nice. Best part of the hotel.

The staff . Poor and very young. More interested in chatting amongst themselves or looking at their phones. This hotel desperately needs proper management and staff need customer service training. What was particularly worrying was how a side door was left permanently open to the streets offering easy access to any down and out or criminal to all floors and rooms. Very dangerous especially as this was supposed to be locked with a code and luggage was kept right by the door. The laxidaisical approach to safety was best demonstrated by the female member of staff on duty who just left her handbag permanently hanging on the front of the bar. Bar prices were expensive

Lovely cosy pub, big rooms with big bathrooms and everything well thought of throughout.

Unfortunately we didn’t know there was a function on the night we checked in. The noise til 1am was awful, even with ear plugs. The bed was like a trampoline, if my husband moved, I bounced. We didn’t get much sleep sadly, however the next night was quiet and we slept slightly better.

Affordable, comfortable room within a short walk from the Promenade and about 10 minutes from the main street with restaurants. Staff were very friendly and helpful. They had installed a couple of fans in the rooms in case it was warm which was a welcome touch.

Everything was great, but it should be noted that there wasn't an elevator for anyone with heavy bags or mobility issues.

Ideally located for us because we have 2 dogs, and there was a big grass area about 100 yards from the hotel. Right by the sea front. Hotel was great and breakfast had a great selection, and was delicious

Great location. Rooms are really nice. A great mix of new and historic touches (an old fireplace, etc.). Great shampoo products. The bathroom itself was very nice with a great shower. We also had a Nespresso machine with capsules, sugar, and milk. That's a great touch. And of course, a kettle for tea. Also, very helpful and nice staff.

The bed was way too soft. The shower door was quite narrow in our room. Felt a bit odd. Other than that, great bathroom.

This is a great hotel just yards from the beach and about fifteen minutes walk from Brighton Pier. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the room was clean, with lots of fans available to help with the heatwave. Breakfast was very tasty and there were a range of gluten free options we appreciated.

Everything! Great location, close to the beach and shops. Lovely big bedroom, it was hot but it was well equipped with fans. The breakfast was plentiful and delicious. Would definitely return! ☺️

Es war extrem laut nachts. Das Frühstück gibt es am Sonntag erst ab 9:00 was für Weiterreisende viel zu spät ist. Wir mussten dann noch 45 min warten bis es zubereitet war. Das Frühstück war dann lieblos zubereitet- das Ei fast roh - der Käse hat komplett gefehlt . Der junge Kellner hatte kein Lächeln übrig.

Cet hotel est formidable, confortable, extrêmement bien placé. le personnel est charmant. Le petit dejeuner est exceptionnel, servi dans le pub qui est très beau. La chambre que j'ai eu, la 4 est décorée avec soin, très confortable

Il faut juste savoir que les chambres sont au dessus du pub. J'avais donc la chambre 4. Mais comme Brighton ne donne pas envie de dormir, il est très facile d'attendre la fermeture du pub pour aller se coucher!

Great location and easy to park close by - you can easily walk into town from here. We were upgraded to a large twin room which was fabulous and so comfy and spacious.

Well set out bathroom with roomy shower plenty of towels and shampoo/shower gel, conditioner and hand cream. Good ventilation so no misted up mirror. Big TV, Nespresso coffee maker and pods, regular and oat milk, carafe of water. A couple of good fans to cool the room. Hairdryer. Phone charging USB-A slots either side of the bed. Good pillows. Bar downstairs for a nightcap.

Bag storage only before 11am or after 3pm. The bed was a little too soft for us.

Could see the Beach had a very very comfortable bed and three huge fans and rolled outside was very quiet. I was expecting it to be busy.

Service was a bit haphazard. Couldn’t get in at 3.30 had to ring the EMERGENCY number guy who was working behind the bar and checked me and was a very nice pleasant bloke, but the memory of a sieve that smiled his way through it

The staff were always helpful. For example, they knew the area and could discuss places to visit. Conversations were useful - they never tried to give short, simplistic answers. The breakfast was good - I had the full English breafast which was generous and a real joy. I asked for a quiet room and got one on the second floor. This matters as the hotel is also a pub and a few customers get a little noisy late in the evening. It's well positioned in Brighton - a minute from the sea, near shops and a short bus ride from the centre and the station. The room was well designed, generous in size and a joy to stay in.

It was a great experience. True, a fridge in the room is useful but I found I could manage without one. That's the only change I'd make. I'm not going to invent problems - it's a great place to stay.

För många trappor och fönstren gick inte att öppna samt två fläktar och en skranglig golvfläkt. Kändes kvavt och instängt. Gamla heltäckningsmattor som inte kändes fräscht. Undrar också hur man skulle ta dig därifrån om brand uppstod!

This is an absolute GEM of a find in Brighton and I kind of want to gatekeep it as a little secret. The value for money is insane, the rooms are beautiful and the staff were so lovely! Location is actually perfect and it's just the most adorable place to stay!

This was very much a pub with rooms, not a boutique hotel. The decor was tired. They used polyester sheets very uncomfortable, especially in the hot summer months. Disappointed.

Friendly staff and a great breakfast. Really well situated in a quiet side street. Apart from the sea gulls’ morning chorus and morning bin collection it was a really quiet location. We stay in Brighton quite regularly- usually stay at the Premier Inn in the city centre as our preferred option, but The Southern Belle will now be our go-to accommodation as it is just a 20-30 minute walk to the Brighton Dome, Theatre Royal etc. I wasn’t sure what to expect as it is basically a pub, the room was clean and tidy with a lovely en-suite and all the usual items you would expect in a decent hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the whole place has a nice vibe about it. Didn’t have drink in the bar during this stay - well save that for next time 😊

The chef didn’t turn up to cook breakfast in the morning but the young man in charge was very apologetic and offered various options, including a refund for breakfast while he organised a last-minute replacement. We weren’t on a tight schedule so went for an early morning walk. By the time we got back the chef had arrived and the cooked breakfast was probably one of the best I have had - all cooked to order, served hot and very good quality sausage, bacon and black pudding.

Das ganze Hotel inkl. Pub machte einen ungepflegten Eindruck. Die Fliesen im Bad sind wahrscheinlich noch nie geputzt worden. Im Waschbecken gab es Kalkablagerungen. Von den Fenstern blätterte der Lack ab. Das Zimmer war staubig. Wir haben uns unwohl gefühlt. Beim Frühstück (im Pub) klebten die Tische. Das Frühstück war durchschnittlich.

Nothing at all. If I was being super picky. We happened to really luck out with the weather and it was 30+ degrees. Without AC it was a little uncomfortable although the guys did all they could putting TWO fans in the room for us. On a cooler weekend it would have been faultless!

I did have to wait 20 mins to be checked in as they were so busy when I arrived, anyone I asked to check me in asked me to give them 2 minutes and then disappeared as they were so busy with food and serving behind the bar.

This was a masterclass in customer service from arrival to departure. There was such a relaxed and friendly vibe to the pub that seemed to emanate from the kindness and attention the staff gave. The Sunday lunch was superb and great value too. The included breakfast was also fantastic with proper coffee! The room was surprisingly quiet and we even had the window open all night although it was a Sunday so maybe different in the week. The located just of the main road helped here I think.

Lovely warm welcome. Room was exactly as expected, super bathroom, comfy bed, plenty of space in the room, and warm enough too. Breakfast was excellent!

Only minor issue was noise early in the morning, perhaps bins being emptied/collected? Luck of the draw really.

The initial experience I had with staff when arriving. I had a discussion regarding breakfast, we decided we did not want any breakfast, I ask if the breakfast can be deducted. I was told 'yes, but we could not change our minds in the morning. We agreed to cancel our breakfasts for the duration of our stay. When checking out, we were charged for breakfast. This made no sense to us £18x4, to be told we can cancel breakfast and still be charged for it. Our stay at the Southern Belle and Brighton was a wonderful stay, but this experience changed the mood of a fantastic weekend, and made us question if we would return to the Southern Belle.

Fantastic breakfast, great pub - the room was spacious, with nice touches and amenities plus really well decorated.

Evie and the staff were all great and the breakfast choices and food were excellent. Can not say enough great things about the day crew.

There was a live band and music playing in the pub right below our room until 12:30. People yelling out side also a problem, should been advised of live bands prior to booking.

It was so unbelievably noisy until well after 2am - the person checking us in had said there was going to be a party at the back but that plus the pub’s incredibly loud music until well into night and people shouting and walking between the two and on the stairway meant a completely sleepless night and it was really unpleasant. This was with ear plugs in too. Really disappointing given the cost and I would not say that the hotel is family friendly at all

The room was clean and tidy. The bar has a great atmosphere. Food was delicious. The staff was also very friendly and helpful.

The bar's music plays until 23 and can be heard in your room, at least on the second floor. They provide free ear plugs, but it's still not great.

Staff were amazing nothing to much trouble, me and my sister felt very at home, the room was beautiful and clean, loved the fan, great central location, definitely would come back to this hotel.

In all honesty there is nothing about this hotel I dislike.

The breakfast was amazing and nothing was too much for the staff. When we informed the staff of the issues we had within our room they were very apologetic. Room 3 was very large to accommodate three people, the beds were amazingly comfortable and all the firings and furnishing were very stylish. I think they only thing i could suggest to improve a stay would to make it very clear that room 3 is directly above the bar therefore if the bar is busy or there’s a private party it could be a bit loud for small children trying to sleep. We had a lovely stay and the thoughtful touches of plentiful tea, coffee pods, bottled water and ear plugs were much appreciated.
