It’s the most incredible experience i’ve ever had in a hotel! Sleeping in a original cave it’s such amazing that i can’t tell in Words
It maintained the history of the region but added luxury
The steps to reach the room
Our cave exceeded our expectations. It was an experience like no other. We loved the bath setting and the fresh fruit and water.
The humidity was high but the fans did help
Such an incredible experience staying in Sassi Matera at Sextianto Le Grotte Della Civita. We knew that we would be staying in a cave but we were still awestruck by the beauty and authenticity that was upheld from centuries ago. The layout of the room was amazing, the staff were very professional and friendly and the tour guide with our guide Maria Teresa that was recommended to us by the staff was fantastic. I’d highly recommend staying for at least two nights, we only stayed for one night which was not enough. The location is great as well and the shuttle service from the parking lot to the accommodation was smooth and well organised.
Breakfat and dinner is increadible, the quality of linen in the room and general set up is fantastic
We had to fight to get the dinner reservations in the hotel we stayed at. Apparently, there was some private function and part of the restaurant was reserved for it. After we got the table, the service and the food were fantastic so if you want to eat in the hotel, make sure to book in advance
A truly unique property in an extraordinary location. The staff was warm and welcoming, breakfast was very good, and staying in an authentic cave was a fascinating experience that we are glad we had.
For us, one night was more than enough, the cave was extremely humid and, despite the restoration, there appeared to be mold on some walls. Our biggest disappointment, however, was the €460 candlelight dinner: a magical setting, but the food and wine were nowhere near the standard or price, the music stopped after about 80 minutes, and after nearly three hours of waiting we left before dessert. I would strongly recommend experiencing the hotel, but dining elsewhere.
The property is quite extraordinary in its idea about keeping caves as original as possible and we were blown away when we entered our bedroom as it looked very special. Breakfast was outstanding.
It was so damp that I simply could not sleep. The musty smell was so overpowering. It felt very unhealthy. Our clothes and bags were damp the next morning It was too dark and we needed our phone torches to move around. The staff mentioned that this was because the weather was humid. But if I had known the conditions of our room was based on the weather then I would not have chosen to stay there, especially as it is so expensive.
Emplacement
The GREAT: Daniel the porter, as well as the restaurant and breakfast staff - brilliant- thank you so much!!
The mediocre: 1000AUD per night for a “charming” rustic cave experience at a UNESCO site was “interesting” value. No fridge and no safe in the room - not even a toilet-roll holder!! The lighting is mostly provided by candles with some dim hidden lighting. So there is not enough light to read a book. Oh - did I mention? No TV!! So make sure you have some content downloaded onto your phone or tablet. The bad: strong concert piano at breakfast and dinner is not very relaxing. I want to call out the male reception staff member starting with an ‘M’. Mate, you were BRUSQUE to the point of being almost RUDE, when I paid my account. You are “the face of the company” and supposed to provide customer service. You really need to do better. Or perhaps it’s time for a career change?? You really left a poor impression on me. Would I come back to stay?? I am not sure I would. James from Australia
Totally unique experience! Caves converted into hotel rooms. Incredible work was done to preserve the authentic Matera caves. The room, overall hotel facilities, staff were all excellent.
Everything
Lots of steps!
All very nice
Rien . Tout était fluide et harmonieux
The atmosphere and charm of sleeping in a cave was superb
The internet reception in the room was poor, but excellant if you opened the room door.
Desayuno ok
This is an exceptional property. From start to finish the staff were fantastic, friendly and knowledgeable about the property. This really is a once in a lifetime experience. The set up is fantastic. Dining room in the cave is a one off.
Nothing. All was brilliant.
É uma experiência interessante, dormir numa caverna. Valeu a pena !
Should have stayed for more days. The breakfast is truly the best. The whole cave experience is extraordinary.
Rien
Alles was absolute top. Het personeel is uitermate behulpzaam. Dank voor de ondersteuning ! Prachtige omgeving. Kraaknet. Geweldig ontbijt.
Unique property in a stunning location and very sensitively restored to preserve all the amazing history, culture and character. Breakfast spread was exceptional and staff were unobstrusive but ever present. Due to the setting, the rooms are missing a few modern conveniences like air conditioning and standing showers but this was more than offset by the superb character and ambience of the property. Would not hesitate to recommend.
Rooms had air cooling systems but not air-conditioning so we had to adapt as the Materans do, by closing all doors and windows to the sun, and taking refuge in the shade - the steps and rock-hewn nature also meant accessibility is not what you get in a modern hotel, but that is to be expected and we managed well, with the kind assistance of staff.
Alles war Mega. Die Unterkunft, die Ausstattung und das Frühstück. Wahnsinn!!!!
Da gibt es nichts!
Nice experience in a grotto, pleasant staff and eco friendly
Not super luxurious, which we understood (no AC) given they have century old rooms
We loved the romance, history and novelty of this place. Our family played cards by candlelight, perched over the river in a centuries old cave. The breakfasts were delicious. What is not to love? We unplugged and wandered endlessly through Matera at night. It was something out of a dream. Thanks for a wonderful experience!
Our son's bed wasn't attached to the frame and the bed literally ejected him and he flipped out of it. The smell in the cave is pretty dank - but IT'S A CENTURIES OLD CAVE - so take that with a grain of salt.
First of all, this was the most unique experience as we stayed in a "luxury cave" - for real..!!!! You will never know an experience such as this as Matera dates back 9,000 years. Btw, a luxury cave , with all the modern day accoutrements.!!! The breakfast was the best we had in all of our Italian travels.
Absolutely nothing. Everything was as unique as impressive..!!!!
Location and the experience of eating in a cave. Excellent breakfast.
No A/C in room, it is hot in July. it was not too bad because the room is build with sillar and had tall ceilings.
It was not just a place to stay – it was an experience we will never forget. The authenticity of the ancient cave dwellings is beautifully combined with modern comforts, making the stay both unique and exceptionally comfortable. Every detail has been thoughtfully preserved, allowing us to truly feel the spirit and history of Matera without sacrificing comfort. The tasting dinner was another unforgettable part of our stay. It was much more than a meal – it was a journey through the flavors and culinary traditions of the region. Every course was beautifully presented, thoughtfully explained, and paired with excellent local wines, making the entire evening feel intimate and truly special.
Wonderful breakfast
Exceptional experience. Like a time travel. We loved everything
None, we liked everything
Rien
Exceptionally comfortable for a cave, better than many conventional hotels and feels right at home. The staff is very welcoming and do everything they can to help and make your stay comfortable. I arrived sick and needed to go to the doctor's and they helped arrange a taxi and later helped by calling a pharmacy for me. Very nice people and a beautiful place, definitely worth the money. Other reviews mention the dark in the rooms and uneven flooring, not a problem for me at all but if you're having trouble walking or having other physical challenges, this hotel might not be for you as it requires to climb the stairs even if you get a shuttle from the parking lot. Also, other reviews mentioned hot in rooms, for us in the middle of July it was a pleasant 26 degrees inside, not too cold, not too hot, though maybe hotter than average American would find pleasant.
Diferente, hermoso, sorprendente
Location, rooms/caves were beautiful! Breakfast in the caves excellent! The staff were amazing! So helpful and accommodating! Love it!
everything
nothing
It was really cool being in the cave as an experience. The staff were really nice and it’s an excellent restoration project.
As to be expected with a cave, it is quite dark and damp in the rooms. But it is an experience. The biggest issue for me was the value for money. It’s cool to be able to say that we stayed in a cave, but I wouldn’t recommend it to others just because I think it is too expensive for what it is.
Localização, proposta e serviço excelentes! A equipe que trabalha lá é maravilhosa. Café da manhã incrível.
Great location, rich history and you get to sleep in a cave! Nice breakfast spread enjoyed outside overlooking canyon - beautiful view. A unique experience for sure!
The cave was a bit musty but this is probably to be expected. That said it was good for a night but I probably wouldn’t want to stay there for much more time.
A truly amazing experience. The cave rooms are beautiful, so well appointment despite being a cave. The service is excellent and the breakfasts superb.
We slept in caves! That's the first thing we tell people when they ask about our trip to Puglia. The rooms were so unique and beautifully outfitted. It's a real experience that we will remember always. It was also obvious that the history is so important here. The renovations have been painstakingly done to reflect how people lived in the past but definitely to a luxurious standard. Matera is a very special place, and this hotel adds to the experience. And, the breakfast was amazing; many tables of exquisite foods of all kinds. We wished we could have tried it all. We will remember this experience forever.
The cave experience was spectacular. Once you get past the quirkiness, the millions of steps and the candles, this place is unbelievable and well worth the time and money. Excellent location in Old Matera, super friendly staff, insanely good breakfast and the most comfortable beds ever!
This was a unique and very fun property, perfectly located in one of the cave neighborhoods. The staff was wonderfully helpful. The room was well equipped, comfortable, and splendidly strange.
The room was, appropriately, rather dark, and I sometimes struggled to locate items in my suitcase. But really, more lighting would have broken the mood.
It’s just an incredible hotel! The location is amazing and the views and accommodation are incredible.
Matera is beautiful. Cool historic property in great location. Very comfy bed. Incredible views.
Service at restaurant extremely slow. Ate my entire breakfast before receiving my coffee both mornings.. Laundry facility was outside our room and workers were noisy at 2 am. Felt the price was high compared to other equivalent luxury properties we stayed at during our time in the Puglia region. Our initial impression was a "wow", but didn't hold up.
Very unique and historical.
Nothing
Our wedding trip to Puglia was unforgettable, and we are so glad we didn’t skip visiting the Sassi di Matera. Staying at Sextantio Le Grotte Della Civita made the experience even more special. The service was impeccable — truly above and beyond in every way. They had everything we needed, and the location was perfect: just steps away from wonderful dining, breathtaking views, and the magic of Matera itself. Spectacular hardly does it justice. The resort is incredibly unique, blending history, beauty, and comfort in such an unforgettable way. Our visit was far too short, and we only wished we could have stayed longer.
niets!!!
The experience is extraordinary, the service is excellent, the breakfast is excellent, and the experience of staying in the unique rooms is special.
Unique and beautifully put together
A little on display to tourists walking past.
Absolutely everything! It was an absolutely wonderful experience.
Everything
Mucho
Wonderful experience. To do once in a life ! The room (the cave indeed) is awesome, the breakfast room is amazing, the breakfast itself is excellent and the staff is the kind you wish to have everywhere you travel. It's a 10+ for us.
All perfect.
Superb stay. Staff utterly delightful. Rooms very unique. Breakfast wonderful , especially outside in the morning sunshine. Thank you for such a memorable stay in such a beautiful Town ! X
Nothing
The location in Matera
It’s not really a hotel with hotel facilities. It’s a small reception, a cave for breakfast and to sleep in. No bar, coffee area, space for relaxation etc apart from your cave. A lot of money for a cave.
An amazing experience staying in the restored cave suite in the heart of the Sassi of Materia. A unique way to spend some time and imagine what it way have been like - all be it tempered by modern touches like electricity and water! The room was spacious and clean but definitely a cave. The staff friendly and the breakfast authentic and very good. The view across the ravine was exceptional and a great place to have an aperitif. We particularly enjoyed the private Underground Wine & Music Experience guided by Erasmo and Raphael through the historic cave system beneath their family home. The cellist was amazing and the acoustics underground very special. A real treat. The hotels objectives to maintain the heritage of the UNESCO city and to give travellers a unique experience comes at a cost but it was an exceptional experience.
First of all, our overall ranking of 4 ("good") as opposed to 3 ("average"). There is no way one can rate this place as average. But for all its uniqueness . . . . It's not in the middle of things, but the location is sublime for an amazing -- really amazing -- view. Having a vehicle -- car, scooter, bike, etc. -- can be helpful, to say the least. But a willingness to walk a bit is all you actually need. Just checking in invites you to a different world; kind of an apostrophe in time. Where are the elevators/lifts? They won't be installed for another 2500 years or so. In the meantime, challenging stairs -- many -- await you, and that's just to get to the reception desk. Ambulatorily challenged (even just a little)? Not a problem: Stay elsewhere. Our room -- a suite -- was, pictorially, amazing. But actually being there revealed some issues. Example: Just walking safely in the room was difficult. While the well-intentioned ownership strives to maintain the place's authentic troglodytic past, I'm no troglodyte, nor is my wife. Surely it could be possible to lay down some nonpermanent walking pads (have these been invented yet?) to help ensure a safe (or at least a not-so-challenging) passage between the bedroom and bathroom. The bathing area is housed in a separate room. Getting up to it is a bit on the scary side, but not as scary as the descent. (Five steps up and, ideally, five down. The threat of just one down looms.) A conventional showeris not installed; just a hand-held shower head. Getting into the tub is a challenge, because it is so low to the ground. Getting out is far more challenging, given that all surfaces are wet. Overall, we didn't have too much trouble bathing, because the lack of hot water, while in keeping with 500BC, made bathing intolerable. The bed was nice; a good mattress. A lot of lighting was provided, too, although the lack of instruction -- oral or written -- made turning lights on and off -- let alone dimming -- a somewhat drawn-out experience. Lightng also was provided by large, beeswax candles; a romantic touch, but not particularly effective lumenwise in an otherwise dark cave. Missing altogether, some welcoming guidance about what's what and what's where. Example: The night befire we checked out we discovered, accidentally, that the room had a refrigerator and -- uess what! -- a minibar with price list. Were the negative aspects of walking, bathing, et al. outdistanced by the positive aspects of having a room unlike just about any other in the world? I'm unsure, but perhaps the lack of an international Troglo-Inn chain suggests the awe-inspiring arrival is outdone, by the "Aw" of actually staying there. Note that the room includes a daily breakfast. (No resto.) Most of the offerings were OK, but not great. Example: Getting hot scrambled eggs was not easily achieved. No chafing dishes helped ensure the eggs were more than just cool on the mornings we ate there. We ordered coffee each day and usually it took about 15 minutes to arrive; each cup had to be custom-made, even for Amricano. All in all, if we had to do it over, we wouldn't, especially given the $. We may have gone for a tour, assuming we had no vision or ambulation problems, and then let it go at that. True: We can say, somewhat triumphantly, "We did it." But, somehow, "Maybe next time." sounds even better.

Magical experience and highly recommended
Fabulous stay. The rooms are luxurious while still also keeping the raw authenticity of the cave dwellings. Amazing breakfast spread. Staff are lovely and so helpful. Absolutely amazing immersive experience. Highly recommend. Keep in mind there are lots of stairs and the floors are uneven even inside the dwellings. Would not be a good option if you are unsteady on your feet or need a wheelchair.
A really great experience at Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita. The restored property has a lot of character and the staff were very helpful and friendly. The rooms are all unique and well appointed, considering they are in a cave! Great views and the property in in a great location for exploring Matera on foot. We enjoyed the exclusive candle lit dinner in the old church and took part in some activities / tours. Hope to return again one day!
Fabulous experience! Great hotel, unique room which was very comfortable and a smashing big bed. Staff were very friendly and professional, helping us book dinners and tours too. Nothing was too much trouble. The buffet breakfasts set us up nicely for each day. The location is perfect.
Authentic old world. However very overrated compared to another we stayed at for half the price. Lacking in the most basic services and amenities. A lot of damp in the room.
Damo and far to basic. Comparing to other properties it’s very over priced. Felt like a 2 star at the most.
A stunning place, suspended in time. A poetic beauty, curated with reverence down to the smallest detail. Here, stone breathes, light whispers, and silence becomes part of the experience. Every corner feels intentional, untouched yet deeply alive. Absolutely unforgettable
The staff was exceptional. They went out of their way to ensure our stay was amazing!
Wouldn’t change a thing!
Unique Town was unique Facilities and service were exceptional Loved the candles
Shaving mirror I couldn’t get the bath water hot enough
Some places are beautiful, some are luxurious—but very few are truly unforgettable. Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita belongs firmly in the latter. From the moment we arrived, there was a quiet sense of stepping into another time. The caves are not simply rooms, but spaces that carry history, silence, and a kind of rare authenticity. The soft candlelight, the natural textures, the simplicity of the design—all come together to create an atmosphere that is both humbling and deeply calming. There is no excess here, no unnecessary embellishment—just a thoughtful respect for what already existed. And that is precisely what makes the experience so powerful. Waking up in the cave, with the light slowly entering the space, was something we will not forget. And breakfast, served in the rock-hewn church, felt almost timeless—simple, genuine, and beautifully connected to the place. We chose Sextantio to celebrate my fiancée’s 40th birthday, and it proved to be the perfect setting for such a meaningful occasion. It is not the kind of place you visit often—but exactly the kind of place you remember for a lifetime. A heartfelt thank you to the entire team for their warmth and care throughout our stay. We left with the feeling that we had experienced something rare—and with the hope of returning one day.
Excellent cave experience! Beautiful restoration. Staff were extremely attentive and helpful. Wonderful breakfast. Highly recommend this experience.
This hotel exceeded every expectation. The customer service was excellent and everyone was very friendly. They assisted us with any need or requests we had. Our room was very clean and the daily room service kept the it well stocked. It is a cave so we had to get used to the uneven floors and lighting dimmer than what we are accustomed to, but we wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. It was such an authentic experience for us and a very peaceful setting. And as wonderful as the room was, the breakfast was out of this world!! Even though they had to put it in a temporary room due to remodeling the regular breakfast area, the ladies that prepared and served did an AMAZING job! If we are ever able to be back in Matera, I wouldn’t want to stay anywhere else. Thank you Sextantio for helping make our holiday so memorable!
Absolutely fantastic! Everything was perfect ❤️🇮🇹
Una experiencia unica !!!
Nada Hay que adaptarse a esta experiencia !!!
Central location. Superb views. Very helpful and friendly staff.
The hotel is fantastic, the rooms are wonderful, and the staff are extremely polite and kind people. The hotel's location is great. The shuttle service from the parking lot to the hotel was very convenient. The breakfast was amazing. Everything was perfect. I can't say anything bad...
Location is fantastic - wonderful sitting out on the terrace admiring the amazing views
Great unique stay. The only issue was the lack of clarity regarding parking and bag drop off. If you are staying be sure you DO NOT enter toward the hotel. You must go directly to the parking garage and be shuttled, with your bags, to the hotel. We received a steep fine for driving toward the hotel bc we didn’t understand where to park. There is not much to do in the town. Other than that, our stay was great and breakfast was yummy!
O hotel é lindo, a gentileza e cordialidade dos funcionários é impar! O café da manhã delicioso. Uma linda experiência!
SPECTACULAR and a ONE OF A KIND EXPERIENCE! The Sextantio is like stepping back in time! We stayed in a sassi (cave) room and we were SO glad we did! The caves have been renovated to have modern conveniences but without losing the very rustic feel. The room was surprisingly warm and comfortable even in the chill of late February. The views right outside our room were gorgeous. The hotel staff was amazingly friendly and accomodating. The breakfast was delicious!! I can not say enough about Matera (its beautiful) and especially the Sextantio! Book this one of a kind experience, you will not regret it!
