Lovely stay
we had a lovely room and terrace , food was good and staff attentive.
couple of hicups,no hot water one morning ,showers in spa out of action , ice maker not working .could have been a bit mote attention to areas such as cutting grass. But nice stay overall.
The locaties and the garden
My wife and I stayed in this hotel for two nights. This was our worst hotel experience ever, and we have been to hundreds of them. The personnel was friendly but not very experienced. When, for the first time ever, we found no toilet brush in the bathroom, I complained at the front desk and was told that toilet cleaning was a housekeeping task. But they gave me a toilet brush and holder. The room was clean but looked a bit dilapidated. The wooden window frame was rotting and the mirrors on the sidetables were weathered. We could get absolutely no warm water, let alone hot water. We were staying at the second floor and even after letting run the hot tap for 5 minutes the water stayed cold. After about 7 minuten it became lukewarm, but two minutes later it turned cold again. So no warm, let alone hot shower was possible and I had to shave with cold water. The matron that ruled over the dining room would not allow anyone to sit in the dining room before 1800 hours, even with a before dinner drink. After being seated she would bring some drinks and the menu, but when you wanted to order something from the menu you could only order something from the dinner menu, not from the rest of the menu. If you wanted something from the rest of the menu you had to go to the lounge or the terras and order there. While we were sitting in the dining room three couples came in and were taken to a table. When they wanted to order and found out that they could not eat their preferred meal in the dining room they left again. So in the end only one other couple joined us in the dining room. The next evening we ate at a country inn and had a very nice experience. The matron also seemed to have some racist issues and let clearly non british people wait longer for their orders.
The room was large and the beds comfortable. The room also had a private terrace with a seating area which was nice as the weather was good.
To use any of the leisure facilities there was an extra charge of £25 per person which wasn't too clear on the Booking.com details. Even to play tennis was £25 to hire the equipment which is very expensive compared to other hotels.
Clean and easy
Bar and restaurant service poor
Perfect Location, great breakfasts and wonderful friendly staff..comfortable lounge and bar area.
Our room
It was nice but worn around the edges. It definitely wasn’t worth the money we paid for a 3 night break. Breakfast was ok but not exceptional.
Bit worn around the edges. Wasn’t worth what we paid. Didn’t realise when i booked my son who is 7 cannot ise the pool facilities. Was really annoyed.
Comfortable room, friendly and helpful staff. Spa treatments great.
Could do with a bigger pool. I would like to be able to swim.
The staff were excellent and worked very hard
Noisy room on road side - sounds of running water constantly
Great location
Property & rooms in need of refurbishment.
Amazing staff, beautiful place was upgraded on arrival with no added charge.
Food was delicious
I asked for a quiet room and had total silence and an upgrade to a balcony. I was personally shown to my room. Lovely caring staff.
Avocado was under ripe and poached eggs over cooked but I feel that was unlucky. Breakfast room was lovely as were staff.
Location and staff
Building is getting tired and needs some work to justify the prices
The location
The hotel needs same decoration but the room was comfortable
Excellent choice for breakfast
Food was good but had tummy pains afterwards and spent night in the bathroom
Posizione e camere di atmosfera
La nuova gestione non sa fare hotellerie. La struttura e’ sporca e trascurata. Triste. Potrebbe essere un posto bellissimo.
Spa, breakfast, parking and location.
NA
Location great for visiting Bath and events at the showground. Pool and spa was great addition
No blind in the bathroom, wasn't a problem as it has Privacy glass however made the bathroom hot at times. One part of the sauna not working.
NOT MUCH REALLY! Could be a magnificent hotel, but it not! Damp room, mould and cracked tiles in the bathroom, swollen doors due to moisture, hot tub not working. Service not great, breakfast let just not go there. An expensive mistake £336 waisted which is such a shame as we needed a relaxing nice break. I urge you to read the google reviews and scroll down the page I am not the only one!!!! Feel completely ripped of and in my view not worth even listing on this website......go stay in the travel lodge it will be better!
All of the above and so much more
The location was lovely and the building. Spa facilities
Some of the areas could have done with sprucing up but not too bothered it is an old building
Staff very friendly. Lunch, evening meal were good. Breakfast larger that expected. Location good for what we needed it to be. EV charging Comfy bed and pillows
Food and drink, although good, were expensive and they put a 10% surcharge on the bill which we were not aware of beforehand. Th room we booked was very tired. Needed painting internally and also more deep level cleaning as lots of dust on pictures and floor corners. Hot tub cover was very worn and had seen better days... looked shabby when you went onto the patio. Tea/coffee station - not near any plugs so had to move kettle across the room to make a drink. Where roll top bath was situated there was a window but the curtains could not be drawn foe privacy so had to make a makeshift cover. Could be overlooked in hot tub by the carpark and walkway at the side of the patio area.
2nd stay such comfy beds, lovely breakfast and great staff 👍
Could have done with comfy garden furniture on lawn as there were no cushions.
The Spa was great!
No air con in room
Nice grounds
No AC at +38 was a nightmare. Very weak fan could not do much. Food is overpriced, breakfast is very basic. The swimming pool is around 4x4 meters, more like an oversized jacuzzi. Overpriced in my view.
Most amazing staff and really care about customers
That we needed to leave was amazing
The location was nice and the use of the spa facilities was a nice addition to our stay. Most of the staff were friendly.
Our room appeared to have a lot of cheap fixes such as poorly filled and painted sections. Random wires around the room and our shower would not go cold. Just seemed to get constantly hotter. There were weeds all over the place and it all felt in need of a little TLC and did not give us the “luxury resorts vibe” it claimed to be.
We were very happy with our entire stay. Room and food were fabulous.
The only small point of note was the water temperatures in the spa - too warm in the pool and cold in the jacuzzi. There appeared to be a problem with the system.
Absolument fantastic
Beautiful.
That I had to leave.
Fabulous hotel, highly recommend
Nothing
The house and grounds are lovely. The staff were great and very helpful. Very clean
Lovely old building
Needs a coat of paint in the room really and a bit of a detailed clean.
Lovely generous sized room with direct access to the grounds. Country House atmosphere. Spacious pool.
Food was very poor and overpriced.
Rooms/service wonderful spa
We’ve been lots of times and love it here, although we were disappointed by the breakfast as its buffet style at the weekends.
Good location.
Staff were so rude. We had no hot water for the whole of our stay. Freezing cold shower and taps. Not even warm water. When I contacted reception they said it was my fault. When I've tried to ring at home to speak to someone they keep hanging up on me. AVOID
Nice location, well furnished
A little tired in places
Loved the vibe, interiors and friendly staff.
Nothing, maybe breakfast could have been a little better.
Nice property in a green setting. Nice garden area.
We were greeted by the front of house receptionist who was very friendly and polite, he checked us in and took us to our room. He made sure we had everything we needed. The bar staff were very attentive and our waiter Sandy (we think was his name) went above and beyond to ensure we had great service. The facilities were really good and we enjoyed the spa so much we paid for late check out so we could take full advantage! :)
If there is anything to say was that the evening menu, didn't have many options,it was a set menu. However, what we chose was very nice and we could not complain about the food.
Staff all good been going for year and glad to see the ownership has not take the heart of this special property and you can still just "chill" and decompress. A great little hideaway when needed...
The fact we got there later than planned to unwind !
The location, the staff ,the service and the food.
There was nothing that we didn't like
This was my second visit to Charlton House (first time as a Montigo) Had a great experience, loved the hydropool and spent many hours there and the water was constantly warm. The room was really good and the bed was comfortable in which I fell asleep within two minutes. Staff were really friendly from when I arrived until when I departed. Hope to be back when im next in the area!
The road crossing (Charlton Road) at the front of the resort is a bit unsafe for pedestrians (although this is a local authority issue to fix)
Room and main areas, bar, etc. were clean and well maintained. Staff were pleasant. Breakfast was good. Noticed some poor reviews but they do reflect my personal experience.
Some areas showing wear and tear, but overall good.
We had a very nice room very clean the staff we amazing very helpful.
Beautiful room and bathroom , gorgeous garden with huge copper beech tree and small orchard. Good spa facilities Lovely staff Great food
Lovely hotel - large and comfortable room and lovely spa. Staff were all very friendly.
Sadly the restaurant let the standard of the hotel down.
Spa , was very good,
Did not like the old fashion lighting switch's.
Breakfast is great, booked to order, (if not many people in ). Help yourself tea, coffee, cereals, etc.
If you want a walk in shower, be prepared for a disabled shower and low toilet and sink. On the ground floor, plus side is you have a rear entrance to the outdoor pool, spa
The facilities are great and the evening meal was very good
The breakfast buffet was awful Cold bacon no sausages and the toaster broke !
Location is ok , but hotel Is just shabby and unloved and needs investment and an upgrade is really required It could be great but just isn’t But you sort of get what you pay for these days Bonus for Me is the rapid EV charging in car park from 3rd party company
Decor is awful , nothing matches everything is at end of life , every painted corner in common areas is chipped or worn No Netflix or prime on old outdated TVs rooms are comfortable but need updating Breakfast was bear minimum, it could do with some very easy fixes and updates , It’s a sort of funny place , a list of meals in room for room service but no phone in room to call room service lol
Nice location, peaceful. Friendly staff. Good breakfast though less impressive on the Sunday.
Spa pool was very cold. Gym is underwhelming, some machines broken. Room small. Pillows uncomfy! Very hot. A lot of money for what is there.
The Hotel is in a good location, very quiet area with nice interiors and spacious rooms. The staff is very friendly and helpful- we had a great welcome at the reception and general nice experience during our stay. Spa facilities were included in the price which was an extra bonus, the facilities are superb with a pool , hot tub, 3 different saunas and a well-equipped gym. A local pub is only 5-min walk but there is a hotel bar and a lovely sitting area available, the garden is spacious and very peaceful especially on a sunny day. We are already thinking about coming back.
Breakfast was unfortunately not up to a standard. Not much to choose from, it was cold and the containers were empty most of the time even though it wasn't busy. Only filtered coffee available, tasted more like water rather than a good coffee. I am happy it was included in our stay rate as it is not worth any money otherwise. There is a lot to improve here.
The room was delightful and extremely comfortable, had everything you needed. The spa was amazing, especially after 3 days hiking! Just what the body needed. Breakfast was really good, but no real thought for Vegans as one of our party was a vegan.
Definitely need to look at food both in the restaurant in the evening and for breakfast as the vegan option was really really poor.
Room was basic but the bed was very comfortable
Breakfast was not great, it was very basic. The hot food wasn't hot, bacon was undercooked, scrambled egg was like it had come out of tin.
This is no longer Ballantyne and has become rather tired and in need of some tlc. But we enjoyed our stay which was comfortable. Food was good though few vegan options.
Quite a lot in need of repair in the spa area.
slaap comfort
Spa wasn't bad
Very very tired hotel, short staffed and generally feels like its being run into the ground. Breakfast was terrible (never seen green eggs).
Loved the building and room. Private garden and pool were fantastic and spa was lovely.
Nothing.
Everything was wonderful especially the staff
Nothing
Lovely welcome and room size great Spa was so good and clean Breakfast was really nice And the whole stay was good value
Bathroom needed a tidy up and refresh, and stain on the carpet Was disappointed that the spa didn't open til 9 and breakfast finished at 945, this has been 7am opening at other hotels we have stayed meaning a sauna and steam before showering before breakfast, please consider this in the future
Staff friendly and helpful, room very lovely.
More staff needed, road into hotel very rough with pot holes.
Lovely suite room. Huge his and hers showers, heavy blackout curtains. Nice gardens and boutique feel to sitting area and spa area. The food at dinner service was a good standard.
The service was hit and miss. Very very slow with drinks orders, young staff that seemed like they'd rather not be there . At dinner/bar no music no ambience. Felt like an old people's retirement home . "Restaurant" is a drafty conservatory that could do with a good clean. The breakfast service was pretty poor, there was no hot food when we sat down at 930 we had to wait a good 10 mins for some to appear. Only scrambled eggs . No sign of bread or toast nor were we offered any . Nor were we offered a menu for a la carte choices . Croissants available but only with jam. No butter portions. Tea and coffee available. But sugar bowl empty. Tables not wiped down from previous guests..Sounds picky but when you are a 4 star charging nearly £300 a night these little things shouldn't be an issue. they're very basic and easy to get right it's just attention to detail, cleaning and wiping down, making everything is refilled and available, offering menus and serving drinks promptly.
Beautiful rooms. Friendly staff.
Not enough staff. Very slow service.
Immaculately clean and very welcoming
It is a lovely gesture to provide a complementary drink on arrival and I’m sure the tea drinkers were very happy but the lack of coffee as an option was slightly disappointing
The staf were really welcoming and generally very helpful. SPA was nice and relaxing.
The stay was ruined by the fact that we booked in for dinner, but as we went to the restaurant we were told that they were only serving room service menu. The choice of food quite unacceptable !! That meant that we had to go out of the hotel for dinner.
Good location, easily accessible for walking into town. Value for money. Friendly service .
Noisy feather pillows, mattress a bit too soft - felt like I was going to roll out of bed. Car parking for residents the furthest away. Day visitors get to park directly outside of the reception
Our room was perfect. Just what we needed to have a relaxing quiet couple of days. The staff were very friendly and polite. Especially the receptionist who was on when we arrived on Sunday at about 2.30. She went over and above to accommodate our requirements. Thank you. The hydro pool was brilliant and it was great seeing the stars from the outside part of the pool. We had 2 very good and nicely cooked breakfasts. All in all a great stay.
There were a few spots that could have done with a better clean.
Spacious room and bathroom , warm, very comfortable bed. Powerful shower complimentary toiletries, tea coffee and water in room. Breakfast adequate for our taste, cooked breakfast very nicely presented . Dinner on first evening was delicious. Hotel is a very old building and full of character. Spa was good, complimentary robes provided steam room and sauna was great. Jacuzzi and hot tub also enjoyable. Beautiful gardens which we enjoyed walking around despite it being March. I brought some fresh flowers with me and asked the lady on reception for a vase. She brought it to our room within minutes.
Pot holes in the car park and access road could be filled in. One shower and the spin dryer for wet swimming costume in ladies changing room was out of order. This however did not affect our enjoyment of the facilities.
The room was lovely, love the patio area, I had a great night's sleep, breakfast was delicious, the spa was delightful and relaxing, thats why we keep coming back, can't wait to stay again, thankyou to a great team 😀
Nothing
Really comfortable bed, wonderfully decorat3d rooms and a powerful shower! Always a plus The complementary bottle.of water was a lovely touch aswell.
There was a window that wouldnt close fully, this was just that there was a small brass fitting missing so the window was closed but slightly adjar at all times.
The staff were great, room was stunning, spa was so relaxing and clean. Unbelievable value for money. Will definitely be back.
Restful
A bit shabby. Needs redecorating almost everywhere.
Nice spa
The breakfast and staff weren't up to standard.
The spa has been refurbished and is nice
I have been coming here for years and used to be a member of the spa and gym. It has been getting very tatty and I was hopeful that when it was taken over by Montigo Resorts it would go back to its former quality. Unfortunately not. There was a leak in the roof of the restaurant with buckets catching the water, the room was a bit tatty and the photos for the “Junior Suite” were of two different rooms- if you want the one with the free-standing bath in the bedroom you have to specify this on booking- I was very disappointed to not get the room I was expecting. The water ran cold then finally got (there are notices saying you have to run the water for a while) - this wasn’t a problem but it went cold again and never went hot, not enough for a full bath, had to top up with kettles of water. I got a discount with Booking but it was still grossly overpriced for what it was, I won’t be staying here again. Such a shame, as it has the potential to be a fabulous country house hotel. Very disappointed.
Location and comfortable rooms
The pool was freezing cold and staff did not inform us of this neither did they offer any compensation such as a complimentary drink. This is the second time in a row we have stayed here and this has happened! Spa was overcrowded and people found it impossible to use what facilities were available such as the hot tub or sauna rooms as they were overcrowded! As people found the pool too cold there was limits to what you could do
Country House feel. Loved outdoor spa but for some reason they wouldn't take cover off outdoor section of pool which was disappointing. Limited seating around pool for relaxing and all facilities quite small so filled up quickly when more people around. Lunch and dinner were delicious but breakfast mediocre. All staff were helpful and friendly. Bedroom spacious.
Very clean enjoyed the spa facilities and treat ments that I had booked
Lovely settings and enjoyed the spa and treatments
we paid a lot of money for a top room, but this is quite tired needs updating, only freeview no other tv channels
the hotel was a bit tired needs updating, there is no food served in restaurant for dinner you only have room service which is not acceptable, not a lot of food choice, booked this trip for my husbands birthday and to have a relax. We went out during the day and when we got back our room had not been cleaned which considering there were not may guests this was not good. The breakfast was nice although if you had a full english you could not have porridge unless you paid extra!! otherwise only cornflakes. I feel this hotel is trying to be something it is not. The jacuzzi which was outside did not have lights on which is quite dangerous, the light6 come on if you move, not a good hotel and would not recommend to anyone steer clear, i feel sorry for any bride getting married here!!! we shall not be going back thats for sure. Very disappointing stay.
Amazing Staff, one of them - Leo going above and beyond even though they were short staffed. Hotel rooms creatively named , good decorations too.
State that the complimentary drink is either tea or coffee prior to leading guests to a bar to prevent disappointment, though hardly anything that shattered the experience
Beautiful room and spa
The pipes occasionally ran cold so couldn’t use the bath when we wanted to. The older staff members were lovely and very helpful. But lots of 16 year olds who were really unhelpful and also wouldn’t answer the phone on reception when they were stood there at the desk so I had to keep going down to order food / ask about the water.
Room. Facilities. Lovely grounds.
Limited available menu for room service. Not all facilities were operational at time of stay. Main jacuzzi pool not working at time of stay. Breakfast on the second day of stay. Long wait for order while other guests were served, only for order to be wrong.
Nice location
We stayed for one night and the experience fell well below expectations. Check-in was disorganised, and we weren’t given any orientation to the room or facilities. We ordered dinner via the hotel app at around 8.30pm, which didn’t arrive until approximately 10pm. When it did arrive, it was served in takeaway boxes with no cutlery, napkins, or condiments. A request for chips resulted in crisps instead. The room itself was uncomfortably hot, and breakfast the following morning was very limited. Hot drinks were served from flasks, hot water was only lukewarm, and the continental offering was sparse and poorly presented. What’s most disappointing is that we raised these issues directly with the hotel in writing after our stay and have not received any response or acknowledgement. Overall, this did not reflect the standard or service we expected
Our room.was lovely and comfortable We could of used some additional pillows
We waited over a hour fir our breakfast the following morning Very long wait
Lovely character building
Breakfast could've been better No toast, very small choice of continental
Lovely spacious room with comfortable bed, huge roll top bath, Elemis products and fluffy towels. Breakfast was excellent - great food and friendly, efficient, professional service
Nothing
All of it. Also the fast way they willing corrected a mistake on room booked. Very efficient service.
