Lovely room. Great breakfast. Helpful nice staff
Food was excellent.
Stayed in one of the attic rooms and kept hitting my head on the beams.
Excellent staff and room
the pub is fabulous - The staff, professional, friendly and helpful - the rooms very comfortable and clean - evening meal, and breakfast out of this world - the beers were kept so well - spacious beer garden - plenty of car park space. I will give it 6 out of 5. Thank you so much for our stay - will certainly go again
NOWT
The food was amazing and good value for money. Location good also.
The room could of been more clean, bathroom especially, no hooks for towels
The food was amazing, staff very welcoming and helpful, location very good
Having to park on road
Excellent staff, fantastic food
Nothing
Comfortable stopover for a golf trip. Friendly staff, good selection of beers etc. Plenty of options on the menu.
Very little
Low ceilings poor access to room and bathroom required a thorough cleaning, mould in shower cubicle. Anyone over 5 foot 10” would need to duck whilst gaining access to room and bathroom.
Second time staying, this time with my wife and nearly two year old. The food was absolutely superb again and we all polished it away, and the service was as friendly and welcoming as last time. Our room was set up, clean and had a double sized cot in which was great for her night's sleep. Breakfast was lovely in the morning and set us up nicely for our day, with plenty of choice. Would happily stay and eat here again because of how cosy and child-friendly it was. Thank you very much!
Honestly have nothing to complain about from our stay!
Comfortable and pleasant room with a good shower. Dinner was excellent. Great amount of choice. Booked a garden room and really enjoyed having a cup of tea at the table and chairs in the garden.
Excellent breakfast. Great choice.
Easy and friendly very polite staff and comfortable
None keep up the good work
Great breakfast , great service.

The welcome and the food was outstanding staff where super

Very nice pub just up the hill from town centre. Our room (2) was excellent - huge comfy bed with quality bedding, spotlessly clean bathroom with nice hot shower, strong WiFi. Young man on reception was very professional. Nice walk through the park close by.
Food was a bit hit and miss - starters and wife’s main were very good but chips in my meal were those brittle indigestible things you get in a huge bag from the supermarket freezer. Cereal choice at breakfast was also very poor and had to keep asking for juice, tumblers, etc to be topped up. A couple of tweaks and things could be so much better.
Very nice character property
Old world charm
Friendliness of all the staff. And the breakfast was lovely
I totally understand it’s and old pub and it has character but the cleanliness of the room/bathroom could have been better.would around the bath a big thing for me
Lovely staff good food
Bathroom could do with a good clean round the edges.
The food and the stall were excellent. The bed was comfortable and the room sufficient.
The hotel was a well run, busy place. The property was a 17 century listed building which was bound to be hugely different to modern structures. My wife and I like older buildings but it wouldn’t suite everyone. Stairs steep, corridors narrow and low ceilings
Location, food and staff - all great!
The mattress was of poor quality. When sleeping I was being rolled out of bed on the right hand side. I was not able to sleep on it and had to move to the single bed. 2 packs of biscuits for 2 people staying would be appreciated.
Conveniently location on route to Scotland.
Some details advertised weren’t delivered or had to be requested. Being charged an extra fee for our dog even though we already booked and paid for a dog-friendly room - and this was confirmed prior. It was also just added to our dinner bill without a word so we had to ask. We also didn’t get the dog-welcome pack which wasn’t a deal breaker for us but is another example of detail they ought to be on top of - especially if they’re going to promote it.
Brilliant stay, staff were so helpful and accommodating. Good food too. Couldn't ask for more.
Not bad area to be honest hotel a little scruffy could do with a lick of paint
Door to run down garden struggled to open , bathroom needed a good freshen up
Great menu , comfortable rooms
Nice room and nice food. Stuff could have been more welcoming.
Had to ask for water which they said was not included in the room rate. I had to show them the picture in booking.com which clearly showed water bottles in the room.
Didn't have evening meal there , but it looked very tasty. Super breakfast. Stylish room. The staff were busy, yet still managed to be welcoming and friendly. Liked the information book in the room.
As previously mentioned, the room lighting took a little working out- but it is a historic building! Nothing else (Was not tall enough to be affected by any of the beams).
Evening meal and breakfast was exceptional. Room 7 was perfect for myself and 2 children, we throughly enjoyed it. Team were fantastic. Great location!
That we werent there for longer!
The rooms were clean, and breakfast was nice.
The rooms are in need of some TLC, they are clean but really could do with some love. Some of the staff were very friendly, we called ahead and mentioned we had a wedding and were told me could use the bar area or toilet to get ready, but when we arrived we were quite rudely told to move on. We were given our keys for when we returned later but had to leave our luggage in the car and no one told us we would need a fob to get in after 10.30 or anything detail on check out or what time breakfast was etc. Luckily we returned with someone who had a fob to get in.
the bed
bathroom and extra charges at breakfast
The room opened onto a garden.
We had dinner and breakfast which were excellent. Our room was what we expected and excellent.
Nothing
Comfortable room, good facilities. Staff helpful with bicycle storage and drying some wet clothes
The way the light switches worked in the loft room was weird. What you could switch on depended upon another switch in the room making it difficult to have just one light on rather than several
Excellent choice of breakfast freshly cooked to order. Accommodation easily accessible but close to attractions and amenities. Excellent!
We were very happy with your stay and would book a return visit.
Comfortable and clean
The food wasn’t to our taste . We were driving to Scotland and the breakfast was too late for us as it started at8.30 and we wanted to leave but at least 8.
Lovely hotel and very clean
N/A
The room had access directly to a garden.
Meals stopped at 7:30 pm and as we arrived at 7:45 pm we were unable to get a meal there. I had booked this place for our Anniversary as the food reviews looked good. It's summer time so I would not expect food service to have stopped this early. We were directed by a member of staff to a pub in town still serving meals. Definitely not the type of food we had planned. We arrived back after eating out to enjoy some drinks and to make the most of the evening. At 9:40 pm we were told it was last orders at the bar. This really was the icing on the cake and pretty much ruined our anniversary. Very disappointing! The stair area to the rooms has the most awful smell but fortunately this was not in our room or the bar area.
Very helpful and friendly staff. Bar and restaurant were excellent, very popular and with a good menu. The location was perfect, especially for dog owners with lovely walks close by.
Not much to dislike. However, being an old building, there were clearly some plumbing issues, and we noticed a small leak coming through the ceiling from the room above.
Lovely old pub. Rooms quirky, quaint but spacious and attractive.
Nothing
Very comfortable Olde world pub. Great atmosphere
Due to the old style beams/ceilings, the shower head couldn’t be mounted high enough resulting in having to bend to get your hair/head washed
The room was very comfortable. Staff friendly and very efficient. Food, especially the Specials, excellent
Arrived at 1930 but was still able to enjoy a good evening meal, have stayed here before and was not disappointed.
Excellent staff, good food
No car park
Full of ambiance and character Spacious and comfortable room Location perfect
Lacked a little TLC The shower enclosure would benefit from a deep clean to remove mould from silicone seals.
We had a lovely character room with original beamed ceiling. Dinner was excellent and fantastic value, we recommend going on pie night! Location is perfect for exploring Appleby, especially going up to the castle by the old Roman ford. Also for buses to Penrith the bus stops right outside.
The accommodation was ideal for three cyclists. We stayed in the Oak flat. The food was excellent along with the service.
Delightful staff, excellent food and a large comfortable bed, brilliant breakfast.
Nothing
Wonderful Inn, very quirky and authentic. Great food (breakfast as well as diner), very nice and friendly staff members. We also loves the backyard garden which was very quiet, therefore ideal to read a book in the sunshine.
Not so much. We had room number 8 (Family deluxe room) and it was on the top floor. It was quite warm and a bit difficult to lower the temperature in the evening. If you are taller than 1m80 (like I am) bring a helmet :) Because of all the amazing authentic woodwork it is quite easy to bump your head, regardless of all the signs that are present. Besides that, a wonderful place to stay.
Fabulous and beautiful. The room was charming, the whole place delightful.
All good
We wanted to stay in an old, traditional, friendly, welcoming pub on our first visit to Appleby and this is precisely what we got. From the moment we walked through the door we were welcomed by the extremely helpful Olliana. We had a garden room which had a lot of character, well designed and spacious. There was everything we needed including a large comfortable bed, bath and shower, access to the garden and chocolate chip cookies! The pub is about 15 minutes walk to the Moot hall and it’s on the circular walk so you have a choice of getting in. We ate at the hotel on the two nights we stayed. Tuesday is pie night and there was an amazing choice on the menu. breakfasts were excellent. Staff were fantastic. Thank you Andrew and Jules for being the perfect hosts!
There’s nothing I didn’t like about the property.
Staff were so friendly and hotel was dog friendly
Nothing
Outstanding food and great staff
Nothing
Great location. Very friendly staff and good food
Nothings
The Rooms were nice bed was really comfy Food was really good
great food, friendly staff, beautiful big room, good location
no air conditioning in the room and windows were locked shut, it was a boiling hot night so very uncomfortable
Where it was
The room was far too hot despite there being two fans going
Beautiful area ❤️ lovely accommodation. Staff went over and above.
What's not to like cant fault it
The staff without exception were caring and kind and helpful.
The electricity failed in our bedroom as we were settling to sleep and it took half an hour to fix it.
Very friendly staff, food was very good and comfortable bed
Little bit of road noise
Room was great. Dinner was very good value for money, breakfast good also.
Bathroom extractor - I couldn't find where to turn it off. Garden was untidy and no access to it.
Great location on edge of town
Shower thermostat was faulty
Nice room with large comfortable bed. Staff very friendly and helpful.
A classic english inn. Locals and tourists in the bar/restautant. Staff very welcoming
Fantastic room with great character. Friendly and flexible staff.
We arrived at 8pm, just as the kitchen closed (as did another pair of guests). Reception staff arranged for us to order straight way and get a meal, which was great (and the food was truly excellent). However, it would have been helpful if we had known about the relatively early kitchen closure when booking, as we could have readily arrived a little earlier. Perhaps add this information to the booking confirmation details?
all was good thankyou
bed could have been bigger thats all
Lovely place to stay, very dog friendly and staff were all great
Room was clean and the Bed was comfortable, The young lady on Breakfast was great and sorted any issues quickly and as she was on her own it was a Job well done.
We stayed at the pub as we were attending a 60th birthday we was not able to get a taxi so the owner of the pub drove us which we really appreciated we had a lovely room with a garden very good breakfast would definitely stay again
Interesting, spacious bedroom and en-suite in the eaves. Food good, especially the ice cream. Friendly and helpful staff.
Bedroom was very hot but that was because of the heatwave. They tried, with two fans.
the whole stay
nothing
Breakfast - very nice cooked breakfast Room - very quiet clean and quaint Dinner - catered well for gluten free. Well cooked. Nice room
Breakfast. - did not provide much for gluten free, eg cereal Room - bit of a surprise being on top of the pub as we had to take our cases up many flights of stairs No car park. On the description it said car park but this was for 2 spaces
Friendly
Really nice inn. The staff were very friendly and the food was excellent. The room was well equipped and very clean. I took my dog and the staff made him very welcome (including a sausage at breakfast), so it was 10/10 from him! The location is nice with a lovely short stroll to the river.
I could not fault the service. The only thing I had a challenge with was that the room that we had (family room) was on the top floor under the eaves. The beams were very low, especially on the stairs. Whilst there was fair warning about this, at 5ft 11 I cracked my head against the beams numerous times. Not anyone’s fault - it’s just the design of the historic building. If you are my height or taller though, you may struggle with the upper rooms. Otherwise a very pleasant stay though.
Comfortable bed, staff helpful. Food good.
Some shower issues. Room a bit stuffy in summer heat - could've done with some air con.
Locatie is fantastisch
Wonderfully run, traditional pub with decent accommodation. Despite, being ( understandably very busy, on Father's Day) the friendly staff managed to deliver excellent service, with delicious home cooked meals, delivered in good time. The salmon was beautifully cooked and the key lime pie was superb! The restaurant obviously has a great reputation as it was full of happy customers. There is even a ice cream parlour at the side of the pub!! The beds in the cottage were extremely comfortable and it was a nice bonus to have a small garden, out the back. Dogs are also warmly received and ours was lucky enough to be offered a sausage, at breakfast.
The shower head needs a bit of adjustment but still amazing value.
Good location, friendly staff and good food.
Booked in at the bar reception staff. Show me to my room, explained everything to me. Relaxed atmosphere went down later to the bar area. I could either eat in the bar or in the restaurant. The staff, my friendly and helpful.
Friendly staff and excellent food
Not a lot
Good room, good food and very helpful staff.
The garden room was absolutely perfect for travelling with a pet. Location was excellent with just a short work to the town centre and attractions like the castle and churches. Evening meal and breakfast were both excellent. The Pet package was superb with treats in the room and a cumberland sausage for breakfast.
Parking is roadside outside and could get quite busy.
Great place to stay and eat
Nothing
Nous y sommes venus plusieurs fois Le personnel est accueillant et l’hôtel est bien situé
Perfect location for our needs
Nothing to dislike
Everything! The room was stunning, the building is delightful, the staff were wonderfully welcoming, polite and friendly, the food and beer were great and the atmosphere in the pub was good. It was a wonderful place for tired, muddy walkers to stay. I'll be going back.
Absolutely nothing.
Lovely little inn with friendly staff and delicious food, and perfect as a jumping off point for exploring the greater area. Even if you don't decide to spend a night or two here, I still highly recommend stopping by the pub to enjoy its kitchen. Will happily recommend and stay again.
Nothing, but worth noting that it is a working pub/restaurant below, so can be a little noisy later into the evening, but this didn't bother us. Also as it is a bit of a remote location, people staying without cars may have some difficulties getting around, but we were able to book some taxis.
Breakfast was ok
Good location, warm and clean. Great breakfast
Nothing not to like, it’s a basic property above a pub
Cosy hotel, super nice staff, and good breakfast
We were unfortunate to get the room at the very top, which meant that knocking your head into beams was a constant. I’m not sure if this particular room we had actually should be a hotel room at all given the clunkiness.
Some parts of the hotel looked a bit tired, a new carpet for the stairs and landing. My bathroom could do with a freshen up but everthing was super clean and comfortable.
Thermostat in my shower was either really hot or really cold but mentioned it to the staff who saod that they would look into it
Lovely friendly staff and great food. Good value for money.
Need to watch your head for the beams/low ceilings in places. Doesn't have its own parking, so have to park on the road.
Staff were super friendly and helpful, room was clean and well-equipped. Private garden at rear for guests only was a vast improvement on the roadside benches out front! Good location for our stopover from Scotland, and handy for driving to the Lakes or Dales.
Breakfast was reasonable but there were two issues that make or break a pub / hotel cooked breakfast for me: no hash browns, and no items within the breakfast could be swapped, which just leads to food waste.
Friendly staff. The salad was actually served with vingarette.
We were walking the Pennine Way & needed to get a taxi from Garrigill to the hotel. I rang them beforehand to ask if they could recommend a taxi service, they said they couldn't. After some pressing I was given a name, who it turned out wasn't working that week! It took an hour & a half to get a taxi the next morning. No fruit was served at breakfast, because we were told there was too much wastage. Strange that almost every other establishment seems to he able to solve this not intraitable problem. The proffered take away lunch was quite parsomonious. No fruit or cake, as other establishments offer & water in a small glass bottle (not much good if your hiking).
Warm welcome as always from the staff especially with my late arrival. Excellent food and nice comfortable bed. I've stayed here 5 times now and its my first choice whenever I stay in the area every easter.
Nothing to dislike
Breakfast was good. Location was quiet.
There was nothing we didn't like.
