Provider-sourced guest reviews.
The hotel is very cute and cozy so are the rooms! Amazing views (especially in a golden hour), felt like a novel character while staying there😁 the bar staff was very helpful, got a nice food suggestion for my drink and enjoyed a lovely evening at the bar. Nice breakfast menu. Thank you for everything!
Everything was great.
Excellent value for money Good food Well looked after
Nothing
The check in staff were good. The breakfast was good.
We have stayed before in main building and been very pleased. This time we had 2 rooms in the annex ( Country House) and was a little disappointed. The rooms are in need of painting, stains on carpets and overall felt a little grubby. I shared photos of my concerns with staff on checkout.
Staff friendly and helpful, beautiful building and features in a lovely location. Breakfast was excellent and plenty of space to park. Lots of areas to sit and enjoy a drink.
location quirkiness and excellent fish and chips
our request on booking.com for twin ground floor room had not been received which led to a catalogue of disappointment and inconvenience, which all the staff acknowledged and were helpful but I was made to feel it was my fault?
This is the second time we have stayed at the Bear and we can't wait to stay again. The staff are lovely and friendly. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The rooms are made up every day without requesting it to be, so always plenty of tea coffee and milk. Also appreciate the biscuits! The toiletries are very good quality. The breakfast is good value and good quality. Plenty of choice. This time we ate in the bar and the food was really good and again good value. The view from our room was stunning!
There is nothing not to like.
Comfortable room - friendly staff - great food and outside bar.
Lovely spacious bedroom and although the bathroom was small it had everything we needed. Fabulous rainfall shower, plenty of hot water, space for toiletries etc. Molton Brown products and big fluffy towels which were changed every day. Plenty of tea and coffee and an espresso coffee machine (pods replaced when used). The shortbread biscuits packaged with a Bear of Rodborough sticker ( homemade by the chef) was a lovely touch. Loved watching the antics of the cows who roam freely on the common. Plenty of parking!
Dinner menu was a bit limited for choice which we didn’t mind as we were on a b and b basis so only had dinner on 2 nights as we were visiting friends. It was lovely to have small bottles of milk on the hospitality tray but unfortunately it was sterilised milk which spoilt my early morning cuppa!
Colazione eccezionale, staff sorridente. Puro stile campagna inglese.
Service in the Restaurant was very good. The food was well-prepared and the Starter and Main were tasty. We did not have a Dessert as we were “full”! The breakfast selection was excellent with freshly prepared Mains and a superb range of Cold dishes and cereals etc
The bedroom was a little warm and we could not find a way to access the Opening window via the sliding Secondary Double Glazing. This was not a major problem as the comfortable bed ensured a good night’s sleep!
Okay for single night. Would have appreciated greater variation.
Position of room which was also tired looking.
Location and room were excellent. It is an inn full of character. Very good breakfast.
Shower room a bit small and dinner not good. Don't have dinner here. Find somewhere else unless you are there Thursday evening and go for the Fish and Chips with a class on wine included.
Food , location and historic charm
One of the beds needed replacing room 41 Room a little tired , stains on seat and bathroom
Not a great deal I think the problem with the hotel is that is set up for weddings funerals parties and whatever and every room that you come against It is fitted with facilities for large parties so there is no intimacy for the private client who wishes to stay in the Cotswolds for a few days or the weekend.
Some lounge which is not set up for large parties with tables full of glasses and tablecloths for the next coming large reception
Grande chambre . Bon petit déjeuner
Manque de prises dans la chambre
lovely rooms very nice choice of breakfast , extensive menus and service
nothing
Lugar muy agradable, el personal muy atento y educado. El desayuno una maravilla.
one of the best breakfast i had room was good - only issue was the basin has two seprate taps so could not mix water
the basin has two seprate taps so could not mix water
Service at breakfast and dinner was excellent, good menu, good food and plenty of choice. Room was excellent size with everything you need for a stay and everything was in working order, neat, tidy and clean. Would stay again if in the area. Also lucky enough to be staying there when the cows were allowed to roam free on the common so could see them all around the hotel, lovely.
nothing
The staff were friendly and the food was excellent.
very small bathroom
The staff were lovely and breakfast was really good.
When on earth was this last refurbished? Shocking.
Camera Letto molto grande Colazione Prima anche la cena
Lovely spacious room (got an upgrade!) and the restaurant is really good. Great for long walks to other towns like Stroud, Nailsworth (check out yellow lighted bookshop) and Minchinhampton (Henry’s Bakery!)
The road next to the hotel. Not too much noise but it takes a bit of the magic
Very pleasant room, great helpful staff, lovely breakfast.
Room over a busy road, double glazing not good enough.
Breakfast was excellent. The location is ideal for my purposes and the bar is well presented with all the right products.
The room was okay but a bit poky. The bathroom was excellent as was the shower.
2nd visit and like the Hotel, its facilities friendly staff and the outside bar/restaurent area. Good location as well
Rooms dont have AirCon although the stand fan did a reasonably good job at keeping the room cool expecially overnight
Really enjoyed my recent stay at the Bear. Room lovely with all facilities including a large fan which was so needed during the recent hot spell. My 2 dogs were catered for with bowls, dog beds and blankets. Great location ... love to return and experience a very green natural landscape next time :)
Nothing comes to mind
Location
Staff and service
Lovely old building - very interesting staff were lovely and very welcoming - really great Coffee machine in room and great choice of teas etc good bottle of mineral water - some really nice touches
Next to a very busy road - (not the hotels fault of course!) wasn’t expecting the noise Run out of wine at dinner so the choice on red was limited - that was hugely disappointing when having a not inexpensive meal Bed was very hard- no give at all so didn’t sleep well - the room I stayed in could do with a refresh cobwebs in bathroom.
Room was lovely and quirky, views of the surrounding area were gorgeous, room and bathroom clean and tidy. All in all would recommend the hotel to others.
Everything, from the happy, friendly staff, good food, brilliant service, and just all-around a place to go when one needs to reset and be pampered.
I can't think of one thing i did not like.
Comfortable and clean,
Good location
Clean rooms great decor
L’accueil Le bâtiment très chaleureux et très bien décoré , dans un style très « british » Le petit déjeuner
Pas de mini frigo dans les chambres Impossible d’ouvrir les fenêtres pour rafraîchir la chambre où il faisait très chaud
Everything was first class
The breakfast was nice and the receptionists were all great! The corner room was particularly nice also. Bed was comfortable and they were very understanding with all our needs.
The fact that we ordered once at 9 and the other time we were told we can not order, after speaking to reception they allowed us to order. Furthermore we ordered a wine which never arrived and were charged for it, after drawing their attention to it they refunded us.
Excellent breakfast
They didn’t adjust the rooms with the heat wave. A fan and lighter bedding would have been helpful.
This is a lovely hotel, staff were great. Will highly recommend.
Nothing
Comfortable well equipped room. Great breakfast options.
We stayed in the country house. Would have preferred a room in hotel.
Quaint and individual Spacious
Nothing
Lovely hotel and staff were very friendly
The hotel is in a lovely location with great views. A hotel full of character and kept spotlessly clean. The staff are friendly and quietly efficient. A great choice of breakfast. This is definitely a hotel we will return to when we visit Stroud again.
I cannot fault the hotel.
Superb location. Evening meal outside as visited during hot weather and had a fantastic evening. Lovely room. Will return to experience hotel in autumn/winter to experience different seasons.
Nothing. Everything was fine and as expected having stayed at another hotel in same group.
Excellent location for the area with comfortable rooms. Lovely quality food for dinner and breakfast served by a friendly welcoming team.
Full of character, good quality furnishings, lovely staff and in a great setting.
Just a superb stay all round the bar outside the outside seating was perfect for the sunny day we had
La décoration et le personnel très sympathique et serviable
Rien
Evening meal - very nice
Location. The suite itself. Not the bathroom which had a grubby base and the sink had poor drainage.
No aircon which was advertised on booking.com at the time we booked. We complained at reception and it now says a fan! If that had been made clear at booking we would never have booked! . As it has been a very hot summer that was one of our main search criteria. It made for a miserable stay especially as the windows had restrictions on them that only allowed about an inch! The bathroom was shabby and the bath was very grubby so I could only have shower. Not 4 star.
Lovely location but should have looked into it more as there were steps everywhere. Shower was over the bath which was ok for me but my husband could not access the bath due to problems with his mobility.
See above
Quiet location Room was immaculate Food was excellent Staff were courteous and friendly Loads of parking
There was nothing to not like
Bell'atmosfera, colazione ottima. Stanza molto bella.
Letto matrimoniale un pò stretto, e purtroppo al posto della doccia era presente la vasca
Superb location and lovely building. Great rooms. Quiet and clean. Great coffee machine.
Lovely building, pleasant staff
We were put in rather a hot room at the top— I do not recommend this for summer. We spent too much money on the food— the pork was excellent but the Sunday roast was tasteless, with chewy fatty beef, surprising considering all the cows wondering around
nice terras, good restaurant
much people on the terras and no more place for the people of the hotel
The location and the staff were fantastic. Especially Nicky who sorted us a gorgeous roo m and was super welcoming and friendly.
Very comfy
Nothing
The staff are very helpful nothing is too much trouble. The location is beautiful!
The noise from the room next door! So not soundproof
The building had a lot of character. Lovely staff. Lovely atmosphere, plenty of parking spaces.
The bed didn’t have a useable socket near the bed (plenty in the rest of the room). But I needed to use a CPAP machine and had to move the bed to be able to do this
The staff are always exceptional and are to be commended for their good service and patience.
The Bear shuts down early. All is done by 11pm. But that is just me as a Londoner.
The Bear of Rodborough hotel has great character inside and a peaceful outside sitting area to enjoy an alfresco drink. The food in the restaurant was excellent. Situated in beautiful Cotswold countryside the hotel offers a relaxing space for couples and is also a perfect setting for larger family gatherings or weddings
The drinks prices were a little high. £30 for two G&Ts and £20 for two medium glasses of wine is excessive in my view. If the location had not been so perfect I would have gone elsewhere for an aperitif. Suggest adding a couple of wine choices at below £30 per bottle.
Friendly staff and excellent breakfast choices.
£20 charge for early check in, (1.5 hr earlier)-when rooms were already cleaned along our corridor, was outrageous. Food service from outside bar on lawn area once ordered at the bar was very slow.
Went for open air theatre in garden. Worth the money
EV chargers a nightmare kept dropping off. Eventually worked
Staff are good. Restaurant food is decent
Very small room for the price
Room, toiletries
Restaurant - quality of food. Hotel was quite busy but lacked atmosphere and staff were scarce. Reception wasn’t manned on arrival.
Location and the room
The shower
We have stayed here several times now and highly recommend it to others. We stayed in the Country House rooms and enjoyed the wonderful views and comfort. Breakfast was outstanding. We booked dinner and that was very good too. A lovely stay.
Comfortable and well equipped room, excellent beer garden, nice atmosphere
Restaurant was stressed in the evening - I was sent to the bar instead
Overall the stay was as expected. We used to stay at this hotel a few years ago. So, we woul visit again. Breakfast need some improvment as on our table we always had opend jam jars and never filled up in a proper way.
For every item they served they asked a service fee of over 4 pounds, so that made the stay even more expensive. For example, ordering at the bar two drink plus twice the service fee. Ordering food at the bar, aswell twice the service fee. Actually, we used to give a tip to every person but after finding out of this serving fee we stopped tipping.
Great location and views, good size rooms and lovely service from staff, would stay again and recommend to friends!
Lovely hotel in beautiful surrounds of Rodborough Common - a short distance from Stroud and Nailsworth. Lovely walks immediately outside the hotel, lovely rooms which have comfortable beds, decent bathrooms, and lovely view. Breakfast was plentiful and lots of choices. Evening meal was very good but pricey. We liked the hotel and its location so much we booked for another night on our return journey. Nice grounds with lots of seating, lovely interiors too. The Olive Tree restaurant in Nailsworth was good as an alternative nearby place to eat and explore with independent shops. Cattle roam freely on the common during summer months so drive slowly!
Beautiful building, beautiful location. Staff were excellent.
Uncomfortable bed, food not great.
The Bear is an old building with tons of character a great garden and stunning views. The staff where ultra friendly and helpful.
We stayed in the new extension in which the rooms were tastefully decorated and clean. The big downside in this heatwave, was that the first floor windows had safety features which meant that there was very little air flow in the room - consquently it was very difficult to sleep. Breakfast was tasty and plentiful but I wouldn’t recommend staying for an evening meal.
This is the third time I have stayed at The Bear and it was very good as always. The food was very good and the staff excellent. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
The installation of Air conditioning would be good but understand this is difficult in an old building.
The staff were just so amazing, Laura was absolutely fab, she was running the dinner service on night! And the young lady on reception, sadly I've forgotten her name but she was a brunette, quite long hair!
The only downfall, was the walls in the single room, they could of done with a bit of wipe or repaint as they looked a bit mucky and kinda off putting. Facilities for a single room were fab though! The bed was alright but a bit too soft...
Beautiful hotel in a stunning area of the Cotswolds. Staff very efficient, friendly and helpful. Breakfast was delicious.
No air conditioning. Did have a fan and open windows. Bed uncomfortable so did not sleep well. Noisy with the windows open. Pipe plumbing noises. Very expensive and very poor value for money
Staff were unbelievably helpful particularly the receptionist who gave me the details of 5 can companies within two minutes of speaking to her.
Bacon could have been crispier
We loved everything about the hotel. Beautiful location, wonderful views. The garden area was gorgeous, lovely comfortable tables & chairs, the outside bar was wonderful in this hot weather. We stayed in the Country House right next door to the main hotel, rooms were of a high standard, very clean, bed was so comfortable, with a lovely view over the valley. Had a fan which was very welcome in the hot weather. The hotel itself had beautiful quirky old rooms,to drink in, just sit & relax or meet up with friends if the weather wasn’t so good. All Staff were very kind & efficient, nothing was too much trouble. It was my husbands Birthday, when we arrived to our room, a lovely card was waiting & a card for a complimentary drink to choose from the bar, such a lovely touch, thank you for that, meant a lot. The Library Restaurant was really lovely, big windows overlooking the common, lovely food in the evening, & a beautiful buffet breakfast, great choices, with a full cooked breakfast served to the table. So relaxing, great staff, will definitely revisit, & recommend to our friends.
Nothing,could not fault.
Lovely as usual.
Not a complaint but have noticed that porridge oats and prunes have disappeared from the breakfast buffet. Which is a pity. Oats also economical as can be used as a base for muesli which means we never order cooked breakfasts!
De tuin en het personeel
Lawaai in de kamer
Beautiful, full of charm and character. Staff were fantastic and nothing too much trouble. The breakfast was great too.
Another amazing stay at the Bear. I stumbled into it years ago and this is now my third visit. I’ve stayed solo, with my wife, and now with my father and each time has been comfortable, beautiful, and relaxing
I stayed in the annex building this time and while it was nice, I do prefer the main building
All very good and very friendly and helpful staff

Everything .The character
Excellent coffee in room. Great service at reception. Plenty of parking. Accommodated 6 extra guests for breakfast with ease.
Bar service on Friday evening was poor. A simple order of a glass of wine & 2 “small plates” took a very long time. It took 2 prompts from 2 different members of staff for the second plate to be delivered - it wasn’t a hot meal - only required assembly no cooking.
Location, excellent food
Room on small side, but fine for one night
Rooms beautiful, hotel checking in staff great! Garden/Bar staff helpful and friendly.
Breakfast, £71 for 4 adults and a child. Felt like we were an inconvenience coming for breakfast and portions were tiny! Was really disappointing breakfast experience!
Great hotel and great location. Lovely rooms and facilities and staff were very welcoming.
Breakfast (service) experience was ever so slightly disappointing.
Not special. Pastries poor quality. Charging for breakfast coffee as an extra. Staff helpful and pleasant. We were given a very good room on second night after being in the attic room on arrival
Dogs!!
Excellent all round- comfortable, quiet and very good breakfast.
breakfst was amazing room was amazing location was amazing staff were amazing we got a cheap deal- which was also amazing
nothing
Staff were very good. Outdoor bar and eating were excellent in the heat. Location great for touring the Cotswolds.
When there was a wedding it kind of took over the whole hotel.
Room, breakfast and ambience

Very hot
Great location. Beautiful old English hotel. Excellent breakfast
Unfortunately it was a very hot few days and there is no air conditioning what you would expect at this price. The room only had a very poor fan and the windows could not be opened properly as they had locks on them. Breakfast was a little understaffed but food was excellent Wifi poor.
Breakfast VG room very comfortable restaurant good menu enjoyed our stay would recommend this hotel

The attention to detail, the personal approach of staff, the buildings and gardens, the surrounding scenery. And they even have ev-charging!
