We stayed here after our wedding in the Lake District and had a wonderful time. Breakfast is great and staff are so friendly. The bath in the lovely suites is great and the addition of sky tv and ability to cast onto the tv meant we could spend lazy evenings in our room.
Quite simply this didn't hit the mark for me....for a 4* hotel the bar is nothing short of a disaster.....beer out of a tin is simply not what you want or expect..... certainly not at £7 plus a tin. Also ...I know it's dog friendly but there are dog hairs all over the lounge and whilst we were there you were almost tripping over them..... unfortunately not the experience I was looking for
Tastefully furnished
Room quite small, next to road
Excellent breakfast with outstanding service from Alistair. The rooms were quiet and the decor was of a high standard. Beds and pillows were very comfortable and the air con was very welcome! Nicely stocked mini bar as well as tea and coffee facilities. Excellent location with close proximity to Ambleside - 5min walk. There were some helpful walk suggestions (nicely illustrated) in the room as well.
Housekeeping was inconsistent - toiletries were lovely but the extras such as cotton pads/shower cap etc were missing and not replenished if they were there. Bed making was also a bit untidy. Rooms were a little hot in August but thankfully our room had air con, not all rooms do though
Staff were great. All were very helpful and friendly.
Breakfast was good and plentiful
My husband was not a big fan of the porridge oats
Convenient, convivial
A little tired in places
Location, food quality, room space and atmosphere
A bit surprised by the 75£/day for our son stay that was not mentioned on booking and at check in
Nice hotel
Restaurant was disappointing I think the hotel thinks it’s more luxurious than it really is
Exceptional dining experience. Professional and well trained staff. Updated and modern suites and peaceful terrace.
Check in / Check out felt transactional and not personable.
The attention to detail. The staff were brilliant, so friendly and the food was excellent.
Breakfast was excellent- plenty of variety. The staff were lovely and tried to be helpful with everything. The decor is lovely if you prefer old fashioned English design . The only really modern addition they have made is that there are plenty of plugs in the rooms. Wifii was pretty good too. Great spot for sitting out on the lawn and relaxing, which is not my thing.
There was really no assistance with organizing hikes and biking from the hotel. If you plan to hike come prepared with your own maps etc. There is no gym and they do not offer yoga mats . There is no spa- and no spa services. Somehow I missed this when we chose the place.
Very tasteful decor, new, and the location was great, less touristy amberside is quaint and the hotel is near to the town. The breakfast was delicious.
The kettle wasn’t clean.
Very relaxed. Excellent food and service, property is lovely and I will definitely return.
Nothing, all was lovely!
Breakfast was beautifully cooked and presented. The table and setting were both perfect
Tbh I can’t think of anything that could have been better. We stayed in 4 fantastic hotels on our travels, all were excellent and Rothay Manor was the best against some really strong completion
The food was amazing. Delicious. staff well trained
Nothing
Sehr schönes Hotel. Zentrale Lage, sehr sauber. Gutes Frühstück. Kostenlose Parkplätze. Nettes hilfsbereites Personal.
Wir haben einmal das Abendessen im Hotel eingenommen. Das Essen war sehr speziell, sehr kleine Portionen und sehr teuer. Uns hat es nicht gefallen, aber das ist Geschmacksache.
the room was excellent with views across the garden. the bathroom was huge & the shower had plenty of hot water. the staff were both friendly & helpful. the food both in the evening & at breakfast was superb, & the service spot on. free parking. highly recommended.
my trip came to an end !
Amazing place. Peaceful. Great staff. Fantastic breakfast.
The decor the rooms and breakfast

Really pretty property, and lovely staff! There are cheaper accommodations around (where we also stayed) but this was definitely worth the extra spend. Highly recommend.
From the minute we arrived Rothay Manor exceeded our expectations, lovely friendly staff and beautiful grounds and building.
5min walk from Ambleside city center Breakfast room
Noisy bathroom
Extremely accommodating friendly staff Beautiful property, proximity to town Excellent food, bathtub, lawn chairs Sophisticated design
Breakfast was superb! Room was beautiful and spacious, with a great terrace to enjoy the lovely weather. The staff went above and beyond to ensure we had a comfortable stay with our baby. The dinner at Rowan was unbelievable! The vibe of the hotel is so peaceful with stunning grounds. It's a very short drive into town or neighbouring areas.
Great location for Ambleside
Nothing to dislike
Very disappointing stay. I booked Rothay Manor as a birthday treat for my husband and told the hotel in advance, but there was no acknowledgement of the occasion at dinner or during the stay. The room was also disappointing. The view was of the fire escape and extractor pipes, there was noise from downstairs, and the loo made an extremely loud foghorn-like noise when flushed. The main issue was the service. The staff member we dealt with most often was unwelcoming and at times rude, including during our birthday dinner. We were seated next to a loud group, my husband was cramped by a pot plant, and we felt uncomfortable enough after his interaction to leave after one course and not eat or drink at the hotel again. A different staff member was helpful when my husband raised the issue, and two drinks plus the dinner service charge were removed, which we appreciated. However, the overall experience fell well below expectations. I emailed the hotel afterwards. They acknowledged receipt and said someone would respond, but ten days later I have had no substantive reply. Sadly, not the special stay we had hoped for, and we would not return.
The Rothay Manor Hotel is a favourite of ours. The rooms are comfortable and sumptuously decorated and styled from a glorious bygone era. Our room, Colwith, had a large balcony overlooking the glorious gardens and the fells. The staff were friendly, attentive and efficient. They danced the fine line between formal service and familiarity with ease. The chef, Simon Ulph, appeared at your table to sauce the meat dishes. He brought a sense of personality to his exquisite food. We ate both the tasting and à la carte menus. Every dish was carefully crafted and beautifully presented. The array of flavours danced across the tongue and delighted the palate.
The dining experience on Saturday night was slightly tainted by the presence of the restaurant manager and his somewhat brusque and dismissive attitude to the clientele. This was completely at odds with the experience of the previous two evenings.
Food and service ‘amazing’
The attention to detail is quite extraordinary. Everything is good quality especially the food. The decor is lovely and the staff really friendly. We have been going for around 25 years and always so happy t9 gp back.
Zero
Clean and welcoming
Radiator on all night, just preference
We stayed for two nights. A property that felt luxurious from the moment you enter the grounds. However, the real stars of the show that made our stay so special were the staff - the best of any hotel we've stayed at. They were warm and friendly from the get-go and had a genuine desire to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The people who work at Rothay Manor are the real embodiment of the culture the owners have obviously tried to create. Every interaction with the staff left us in a more positive mood. In particular, the level of service provided by Sam on the reception went above and beyond in ensuring a phenomenal stay. We can't wait to come back.
Beautiful and a great location
Probably a bit too expensive for what you get but perhaps Thats just about local pricing.
Beautiful hotel in a lovely location. Excellent service by warm and friendly staff. We really enjoyed our stay and hope to Lord willing come back!
I have a nut and peanut allergy. The complimentary soaps warn that they are not suitable for people with this allergy.
Everything was fantastic. Great location. Wonderful shops walking distance from us.
Everything was great!
The breakfast was great, ample hot and cold food. The mail meals were excellent, good choices and all meals were well served. Staff had good knowledge of food, wine and facilities. The garden was spectacular, a joy to relax in.
There was a light out in the bathroom when we arrived and the was no water in the water jug.

The location the overall high standard of the hotel and the friendly staff.

Excellent location to explore the glorious Lake District. Spent a day with Martyn from Embr.bike exploring the countryside on e-bike. Superb day out on the bike open to all levels, with easy or challenging terrains.
Comfy beds, quiet and loved the styling
Good restaurant and very friendly staff. Lovely rooms. Great location
The food is expensive.
heating control poor bathroom small bed appallingly badly made could not sleep
Good Location
Great to see that standards have been maintained since our last visit. The staff are both welcoming and courteous. The rooms are well appointed and the food is first rate. I can highly recommend the damson soufflé!
Lovely warm feeling to furniture and decor. Restaurant and bar were very pleasant and food good. Staff were all very pleasant and attentive.
WiFi very poor, totally disappeared at times
Excellent location for exploring Ambleside and surroundings. First class service and hotel
Nothing
A warm welcome from the moment we arrived, lovely large room which was pristine and comfy. Food was excellent, especially breakfast. Lots of parking and easy to charge a car.
The drinks were quite expensive compared to the food
The breakfast is excellent with a fantastic choice. Evening meals are of a Michelin star standard.
nothing
Perfect location, peaceful and good access to town. Beautiful garden. The breakfasts are delicious with good produce and excellent choice. Staff are friendly and helpful. Some lovely signature cocktails served in the bar. Nice cheese board on offer via a la carte menu.
Rooms in the old building seem at a stage where they could do with some proper refurbishment for this level of hotel. While the breakfasts are brilliant we felt that the house and a la carte menus weren’t as good an offering as in the past when we’ve stayed.
It’s a nice cosy place
Not a value for money in terms of facilities and amenities
The room size and comfort were very nice. Of particular excellence was the engineering of the lighting. Overall, the food quality was very good. We especially liked the Rosemary ice cream and Tart Cherry sorbet.
The fruit salad at breakfast was below par. We had to ask to have some berries included and even then the amount was limited. The fruit that was included was under-ripe, not well managed. Also, I would have liked a fresh whole grain, cereal type bread option. The sour dough bread was excellent, but I like to use mostly whole grains.
Good position
Not great view
The room was huge and comfortable. Breakfast was delicious. The patio space was comfortable and relaxing.
Not a huge deal for us, but there is no elevator.
Wonderfully presented building and grounds, with a very comfortable bedroom
Our room backed onto a noisy junction so traffic noise could get a little loud, especially as the village got busier, but it didn’t detract too much from the stay.
All the staff were very knowledgeable and couldn’t do enough for you. All the food was excellent quality and would highly recommend going to the restaurant for dinner - the drinks were expertly served, and the food was some of the best meals we’ve ever had! Perfect setting for a relaxing and reset away.
Lovely, comfortable and clean room with beautiful décor. It seemed like every detail had been thought of. Reception staff were very friendly and helpful. Perfect location. Half way between the town centre and the lake so a very short walk to both.
The room we stayed in was incredibly warm but this could have been the time of year. Thankfully there was a large fan provided and we could open the patio doors to allow it to cool down. Also it is situated on quite a busy road. As mentioned before the staff were very friendly but one day at breakfast we could hear a few of the staff talking loudly in the kitchen and there was some loud swearing which was not very professional.
Spacious, comfortable room. Excellent breakfast. Easy parking. Very good restaurant who catered very well for dietary requests.
Charming old setting and beautiful lawn area.
The property is in the middle of a triangle road system which is becoming busier during the summer rush, so vehicle noise does become evident at times. Also I wish there could be some flexibility in check out times. The staff insisted we leave room at 11am when we only arrived the previous evening. Considering check in times are 3pm this gives them plenty of time for cleaning for next guests.
Excellent location on edge of Ambleside - 7 minutes walk to town centre. Beautiful gardens. Excellent service, very comfortable.
The only complaint I had was that the walk in shower had no handrails which was difficult for someone with limited mobility.
The staff were excellent. The location is very good and the gardens and seating area outside are lovely.
It was extremely hot whilst we were there so a fan in the room to get some air movement would have been helpful for sleeping.
Excellent hotel. Warm friendly and efficient staff. Fantastic location. Lovely building and grounds.
Menu a little limited with insufficient variety.
Charming and well situated.
Service a tad slow.
Location, style, peaceful, room, staff, breakfast
The menu choice was comprehensive & food excellent quality. The room was beautiful -decor & furnishings excellent quality. Lots of little finishing touches to make extra special.Spotlessly clean. Everything provided for our dog . Lovely little private seating area outside adjoining the room- which was a pleasant surprise. Location was amazing with wonderful walks in all directions & 5 minutes from Ambleside. Staff were super friendly & accommadating - & great with our dog. Will definatly re-visit
Prices of drinks were rather expensive - especially cocktails -
Our stay at Rothay Manor was perfect. Staff were welcoming and helpful and made us feel right at home, The room was nicely furbished. Bed was super comfortable and the bathroom was spotless. The shower was excellent, lots of flow and great temperature control. Nice fluffy generous towels and soap / shower gel. We also ate at the restaurant. Food, ambience and staff were all excellent. Slept comfortably and peacefully. We were also able to park at an EV charger parking spot and recharge the car overnight at a very reasonable rate for a public charger. Breakfast the next morning was great. Just perfect all round.
Nothing to dislike. We stayed during a mini heatwave so the room was quite warm with no A/C but wouldn't normally be needed in the Lake District.
Lovely welcome upon arrival & shown to our room. The room was spacious with double doors opening onto patio with a gate leading out which enabled us to take the dog out without going thru the hotel. Bathroom was huge with roll top bath & separate shower. Products in bathroom were lovely from liquid soap to hand lotion. Fresh milk in the fridge & homemade biscuits in a jar by the kettle were much appreciated after a long walk. Breakfast offered a variety of choices from sourdough toast to full English. Nothing was too much the staff were fantastic. Louie the dog enjoyed sausages for breakfast & walks in the well kept garden. Beautiful fresh flowers dotted around the hotel added colour. We will be back for sure
Nothing!
Gorgeous place in easy walking distance to Ambleside centre and the bus to take you all around the Lake District. Staff were very friendly and the restaurant was amazing
Lovely property in gorgeous setting. Room very comfortable and breakfast is great. You can also walk to the town centre very easily.
The dinner was excellent. Drinks were pricey. Comfortable bed and beautiful bedroom and bathroom
The TV not working in the bedroom
Breakfast was amazing, staff were exceptional, dinner was sublime (we had the lamb and the cod), our room with its small garden was secluded and beautifully decorated.
Very charming, walkable, and everything you need onsite!
Nothing
Excellent service and high standards . Very comfortable and in a lovely location
Nothing
Perfect location on the edge of Ambleside. The staff were all exceptional. There is a large car park one minute walk from the main reception area, but you can drop off bags and turn right outside. We stayed in the main building because we wanted a proper balcony and we had the largest one. Two sets of double doors opened into the balcony and a lovely view of the quite large garden, which had some nice plants and trees. (In the separate, more modern, building the upstairs rooms have Juliette balconies and the ground floor rooms have dog friendly’ outside areas.) Our bathroom had a bath that filled very quickly and a large, free-standing shower (rainfall and hand-held) with excellent water pressure. Beautiful ‘Bath House’ toiletries were provided. The bed in our room was very big - a super king I think. The sheets were lovely. The restaurant’s ambience was perfect and the food was sublime. YOU MUST GO! The high quality extended to breakfast too.
Despite mentioning a few things here, I would choose to stay at the hotel again in a heartbeat, due to the wonderful staff, location and food. The mattress was on the soft side, but this is personal preference. A couple of new benches are needed in the garden. There was one decent one and the other was rotten. The balcony looked slightly forlorn - a lick of paint on the iron work would have overcome this. There was a lot of banging from the building site across the garden - ongoing since last July apparently.
The hotel is very well presented and the decor is beautiful. The gardens were exceptional.
N/A
The location is excellent for exploring the Lake District.
Aside from the hotel restaurant which is fantastic, the dining options are not so great when compared to nearby towns such as Grasmere.
