Room size is great
Stairs are too narrow and no lift. Not friendly to guest wuth heavy luggage
Great location and beautiful garden.
Great central location, lovely comfy bed and great pub dining too
A very comfortable and welcoming hotel/pub, with friendly and helpful staff. Food was excellent, and good value. If it had a car park, I would rate it even higher.
Lack of car park
Everything about the hotel is perfect
Comfortable, welcoming, relaxed, stylish
That on the Saturday night there was an event and I didn’t know about and I was unable to eat at the restaurant and had to walk around Exeter on my own for an hour trying to find a place that had space. I ate dinner there every other night of my stay and I would’ve thought someone would’ve mentioned it to me in advance.
The location is central and on evening and Sundays there is free parking close by or car parks. It is dog friendly. Bed & pillows comfortable and good size.
One of the worst hotel stays I have ever had. The room smelt strongly of cigarettes especially in the bathroom but the windows only opened a small amount so impossible to air out. The noise was awful keeping me awake until 2am and on and off from then and that was with the windows closed, enjoying the cigarette smell. I especially asked for a quiet room due to health condition so this was even more disappointing. The bathroom fan never went off and was so loud through the night. The TV didn’t work. I left exhausted!
Lovely staff and great breakfast . Bed was really comfortable. Perfect location near the station and the cathedral plus all the restaurants and the cinema and shops. Did not realise it was a pub when i booked but that was fine and not noisy. Much better deals through the hotel itself. Definitely would stay again
Room was very small and there was no bath. No dressing gowns or tissues shower caps etc or free bottles of water
Everything was fantastic
Nothing
Great location, good breakfast, comfy and clean rooms and beds.
All good
The rooms were spacious and luxurious Location perfectly situated near the city center and the train station But could be hear any traffic in the bedroom
We asked for eggs Benedict the eggs came out rock hard, the muffin was slightly cold and not enough hollandaise sauce. The breakfast was the only thing that let the stay down ..
Fabulous central location but not noisy (I stayed on a Tues night) Delicious breakfast and really helpful staff.
More choice on tv (ie.options for Netflix etc)
Food was amazing, staff were friendly and helpful, location was good
No lift, no car park at property and felt nearby car park difficult to locate
The place was lovely, in a great location, and the staff were amazing!
There’s no lift, and our room was on the top floor. That was the only issue we had.
From the moment we checked in, everything was absolutely incredible. The staff were so friendly and welcoming, and the whole experience just felt special from start to finish. Our room was delightful – really spacious, modern and beautifully done, with an amazing view. The beds were incredibly comfortable, the bathroom was lovely, and even the toiletries felt really high quality. It was clear that a lot of thought had gone into all the little details. We had drinks in the bar later that evening, which was equally lovely, with great service and such a nice atmosphere. The location was fantastic too. We were also encouraged by the Manager to stay for breakfast the following morning, and I’m so glad we did because it was genuinely one of the best breakfasts we’ve ever had. Everything was incredibly fresh and delicious, and you could really tell how much care had gone into it. Honestly, the whole stay was just amazing. Beautiful property, wonderful staff, fantastic food and so much attention to detail. We absolutely loved it and would come back in a heartbeat!
Nothing to note at all.
Great location , comfy and friendly staff
Comfortable and quiet room. Comfortable bed. Great breakfasts!
A ton of stairs with no elevator. Had to carry suitcases up and down steep stairs. They say they will help with suitcases but the staff member did not show up so we did it ourselves.
Staff, comfortable bed, outside space, roast dinner.
Not enough space next to sink to place toiletries. Need big mirror at dressing table.
Had a meal here with friends, the gluten free fish and chips were amazing! Toby who looked after us was amazing and attentive. Seemed very busy but the staff were all great! We will be back!
Location was very good. Very central. Bedding was comfy and room had everything you needed. Fun decor as well.
There was numerous hairs around the bath and taps and radiator in bathroom were loose. Carpets were also a little stained. Noise in morning from I assume barrels made for several wake ups
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Everyone very friendly. Everything under one roof. The pub and lovely restaurant. Thought it could be noisy, but it wasn't. Had an extremely restful night. Only one minor problem as the AC was a little noisy. I wanted to open the window, but I was unable to do so. I would definitely stay there again.
I was not keen on the AC as it was a little noisy.
Small and beautiful hotel few minutes away from the magnificent Cathedral and from a convenient car park. Nice and helpful Staff. The room was silent and comfortable, coffee and tee available. We had a delicious dinner at the restaurant inside the hotel. There is a nice garden and a beautiful pub area. No lift, as often in England!:)
Emplacement très sympa petit dej très chouette personnel agréable
Les fenêtres.
It was a lovely to see the hotel was as good as the facebook pictures suggested. A mixture of old comfort nostalgia with modern conservatory & out door area. Some of us were in 2 rooms on the top floor which would be a problem for some as there's no lift, but we managed ok. Other person on 2nd floor in bigger room. The air-conditioning is spot on, like a fridge when we walked in on a hot day & soon got warmer when we adjusted it. Modern, clean bathroom with good shower pressure . There was no noise eventhough the cathedral & high street are a short 5 min walk. Porridge with oatmilk/toasted almonds/berry jam was very nice. We would definitely recommend.
The up keep of the period building was to a high standard. Having breakfast in the lovely conservatory was a great start to the day. Staff were very friendly & helpful.
No lift.
This is a little gem. Rooms were quiet and charming and individual with a really well stocked mini bar and complementary port and flapjack! We didn't eat dinner here but the menu looked very nice, and we would eat in the restaurant if we stayed here again. Breakfast was very tasty with a freshly cooked hot menu or the usual table of cereal, pastries, yogurt. All the staff we met were very friendly and attentive. There is no car park and I didn't fancy the multi-storeys, though they are probably fine. I booked a space at Toppers car park on Richmond Road, via JustPark, which was a 5 minute walk away. I didn't see a lift so if that's important to you, there are three flights of stairs to the top rooms.
Arranged my husband’s surprise 50th, the team went above and beyond , offering a fabulous meal and catering for everyone’s needs, my husband had an amazing time . City gate hotel is such a lovely pub be it for a lunch time pub or arranging a surprise meal , the team are a credit to their brand
This is second time at Citygate Exeter. It is a lovely pub/hotel. The staff are very helpful & friendly. The food is very good. The bathroom is very clean. The rooms & beds are very comfortable. The atmosphere is very calm & peaceful. Would definitely book again & highly recommend.
Great location and service from the staff. Comfortable accommodation.
City Gate was everything we hoped it would be. We visit Exeter frequently but had never stayed here before but will definitely stay here in the future. The attention to detail was very evident, which is sadly lacking in most hotels unfortunately, having stayed in quite a few other hotels in Exeter.
spacious room, great service, excellent location for the town, and the breakfast was perfect - i would definitely stay here again.
Comfortable, clean and staff friendly and helpful
Shower was a little difficult to regulate temperature
It is a great little hotel, close to the city centre. The rooms are very comfortable. The little touches like the flap jack and port were great. The staff were lovely.
Nothing
amazing service.
Characterful cosy room - comfortable bed and nice bathroom
Would be nice to have more milk and English breakfast tea. Windows are in need of repainting. It was pricey though to be fair we stayed at peak time.
good location
No Lift services
Friendly staff. Lovely room and bathroom.
Usual car park no longer exists.
Very clean Family run feeling very pleasant team We loved it
Small rooms but very clean No elevator but not a problem
Great location
Lovely air conditioned room. Very clean. The room was a good size. The bed was big and very comfortable.
Super helpful staff, good food, great garden space and very comfortable bed.
Lots of narrow stairs to take luggage up but that’s because it’s a heritage building, which was lovely.
Room and air con were fab. We didn't eat there but had a few drinks. Nice atmo :-)
Pricing was high considering it was a room above a pub with no extra facilities like a gym etc. But we did stay during Exeter Uni Graduation day/s so they were probably making the most of this!!?
A good size room Comfortable bed Nice big bathroom with a good shower
The information provided by the hotel said parking was at the Harlequin car park - which we found out has been closed for a long time When we arrived we were told the kitchen was having planned maintenance and so there would be no breakfast the next morning - altho a refund was given there were no apologies and no advance notification provided The air conditioning unit kept making a loud buzzing noise every 30 seconds all through the night and it even continued when the AC was switched off ??? I was told that this always happens each year when it gets hot !!!!! The TV didn't work even after the batteries were changed in the remote control TBF - when the I asked for a refund because of the AC noise and TV problems this was given straight away - so thank you for that
Our very short stay was a catalogue of incidents. Arriving in Exeter, trying to find the car park, noted as being the nearest on their own website, proved tricky as it closed several months ago! Not the hotel’s fault but take that info off the website. On checking in, eventually, we were told “no breakfast tomorrow, planned maintenance”. Not only were we not advised of this at any time from booking to arrival, we had been charged for 3 days bed & breakfast! The room was lovely as was the en-suite. The air con (one of the reasons we booked this place) was very noisy, as in a grinding noise, every two minutes, I know it was two minutes because I listened to it for hours! I eventually got up to switch it off, a/c stopped, grinding continued…to top it off, as mentioned by other reviewers, the TV didn’t work. Not a massive issue but the World Cup is on and England were playing the following day. As reception wasn’t manned, we left a note the next morning asking for these things to be fixed, and we went in search of breakfast. We then went shopping afterwards and returned in the afternoon to an unmade room and no response to our note. We spoke to a lady who said she could move us but all the a/c was the same! She couldn’t fix the tv either. We called Hotel Indigo, they had rooms so we packed and left. To their credit the City Gate gave us a full refund without any argument. It’s such a shame. The reasons we booked the hotel were that it wasn’t a chain, helping local business and all that, and the A/C but let down on both points.
Yummy scrambled egg! Warm croissant! Cool air con and mini fridge so good in this heatwave !
Wonderful place and we would love to stay again. They have air conditioning which was God-send after a very hot trip across England.
modern. aircon, comfy bed. great beer garden. breakfast was ok
tv complicated. could be cleaner (cumulated dust on pictures, door frames, bathroom mirror. no parking.
Lovely pub - overall great experience. Food and drink prices were reasonable for the quality. The American bartender Hope was very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend trying out their spritz menu.
With the incredibly hot weather, we were looking for a place to stop overnight on our way down to Cornwall. We were travelling with our golden retriever and needed somewhere that would be dog friendly but also have air conditioning to keep her comfortable. This place was brilliant, the staff were so friendly and accommodating and the room was great with a comfy bed and powerful air conditioning keeping us all comfortable in the heat. They provided us with a late checkout at 1pm and after we sat downstairs in the air conditioned bar whilst waiting for the heat of the day to pass. Overall a really welcoming place to stay and we will definitely visit again. Thank you all!
Perfect location inbetween St Davids station and city centre. Lovely decor, comfy beds, friendly staff, great beer garden and delicious breakfast.
I was clean and comfortable Very convenient for our visit Decor was bit quirky which I really liked
Nothing we really disliked
All good, really enjoyed our stay.
Nothing negative.
The staff were excellent. The food was excellent. The room was excellent. Very enjoyable.
Stayed a few times - always consistently good with some nice touches.
Nothing
The room was clean and well appointed. The complimentary port and flapjack along with the usual tea and coffee was a nice touch. We also had decent air conditioning ! Great given how hot the weather was. We were on the top floor, fine for us but might be a problem if you struggle with stairs. We had both breakfast and dinner in the restaurant. The food was really nice and the service friendly and efficient. We parked about a 10 minute walk away but did pass a smaller car park closer to the Hotel en route. Both were on the Ringo parking App. Will definitely stay again when in Exeter.
We've stayed at various hotels in Exeter and the City Gate is our favorite. All staff are friendly and welcoming. Lovely, relaxed atmosphere and great food.
Comfortable room and delicious breakfast
Only thing I didn't like was climbing stairs to third floor.
The Sunday lunch we had there was fantastic and the staff were great.
Amazing staff, great location and lovely clean rooms
Nothing not to like, top class establishment
The service from Kirsty. Despite all the faults, Kirsty was brilliant in offering quick solutions.
The issues we had in our room, safe not working, no phone, sink plug dirty, no milk.
Fantastic hotel, beautiful decor immaculately clean , huge comfortable bed , luxury shower . Fantastic staff , fantastic breakfast and perfect location. Can not find one fault with city gate will definitely be returning.
Thankyou city gate for a fantastic stay with you. Arrived 24th June for two nights . Your hotel is just the best. Decor , staff , rooms , cleanliness , food and customer service was outstanding. Perfect location for our visit to powderham castle to see Teddy swims. Will definitely come back to you next year. Thankyou all
Ambience , the staff are amazing and just everything was perfect
Posizione e pulizia.camere grandi e ben ammobiliate, fornite di ogni confort.
Wifi scarsa connessione
Wonderful historic property with lovely rooms and an airy open atmosphere.
We loved the property.
Lovely hotel in a central location - the rooms felt luxurious, lots of nice touches including the welcome snack and drink. Very nice pub with a great menu. Would stay here again in a heartbeat.
The staff were wonderful, the rooms were adorable and the location ideal. The outdoor patio was a great place for an evening cocktail and they were having World Cup matches on a big screen. Would certainly come back.
Leaving
The staff and the fights and shouting in the corridor until 2am Moving rooms at 10:30 at night as the Sky tv wasn't working, The dripping shower head all night
From the first time we were introduced to Jon (Events Manager) at City Gate we had every confidence that he would deliver our perfect day and we were not disappointed. The planning meetings we had with Jon were straight forward and nothing was too much trouble. Jon would regularly say to us 'just leave it with me' and 'that's for me to sort out' and he always fixed it! On the day Jon and Luke (General Manager) were waiting to greet us outside and the room was set up beautifully, along with the outdoor games we had dropped off to entertain the children in our party. We had so many compliments on the venue, quality of the food, table lay out and how well we were looked after on the day. We would whole heartedly recommend the City Gate as a wedding venue and we certainly be returning soon! Huge thank you to Jon and the team at the City Gate for making our day so perfect!
Beautiful hotel, cosy pub, great location. Free port a lovely touch!
Location and character. Also excellent restraint.
I have stayed many times and this is the first time I have had anything to complain about. No hot water for shower at 7am. Also no way of controlling AC so I had to switch it off at mains on the wall.
Great location, very friendly and helpful staff , quirky decor , stylish bar . Breakfast was lovely , hot , fresh and good choice on menu .
First room allocated on top floor was very compromised with sloping ceiling , could not walk around the room comfortably . Bed against the wall so not ideal for 2 people . Asked to move , next room better though bathroom was very cramped ( this was explained before we swapped rooms ) . Presume the best rooms are allocated first upon check in even though we booked a while in advance .
Fabulous location for the city, very big room, great to have a fridge and fresh milk!!!!!
The rainfall shower was more like drizzle😂 i think the pressure was low as lots of other people using the hot water at the same time. Didn't spoil our stay though.
Didn't have breakfast.
The blind in the room were very thin & let a lot of light in. With it being June, l woke at 4.40am as super light in the room. Suggest upgrading to black out blind/curtains.
Location is perfect, room was fab and staff super attentive. Hotel & Bar has a great vibe. I would definitely recommend and would go back if I needed to stay in Exeter
Bathroom was a concern because of the steps and the lack of space to manoeuvre. The bedroom was quite satisfactory. Breakfast was good and the meal at dinner was excellent. The staff were helpful and friendly.
No lift making it difficult to transport luggage.
Lovely room great location pub has lovely large garden… v dog friendly … staff friendly too
The ambience, the location, the staff, thw breakfast
Loved the complementary home-made flap jack in a dome and port in a cute glass bottle. Tagged like in Alice and wonderland. Staff very helpful with my ineptitude with the Sky TV remote control. Really lovely boho decor and comfortable bed. Oh and the blissful air con in the heatwave.
I was room 18 at the top, so some steep stairs to go up if you are older. Plus a slanted roof with a beam that I bumped my head into a few times. But I am clumsy!
Room was lovely, spacious, and clean. Lots of amenities in the room, and the pub downstairs was really nice.
No parking onsite, but there was a public car park nearby.
Lovely little hotel, full of character and in a fantastic location. This was our second stay and on the first we also had breakfast and dinner at the hotel which was excellent.
Lovely setting, clean rooms and lovely beer garden
The staff are totally amazing, very friendly & super helpful. The hotel has recently had an excellent revamp & looks & feels very smart but retains its cosiness & welcoming atmosphere.
Absolutely nothing not to like!
Air conditioning, excellent shower, basket of goodies and honesty treats
Great staff, beautiful room, lovely pub garden
Everything was perfect
Central location. Bed was comfortable. Coffee machine was good.
Noisy. A reading light by bed would have been helpful. No lift.
All of the staff were excellent, the food in the restaurant excellent.
The only off putting point was the lack of a lift to the upper floors. It may be my fault for not reading the hotel information, but as both my wife and I are 73 it was a negative factor for us.
Great bed and AC
Staff attitude was extremely poor and left a lot to be desired. Unfortunately every single encounter we had with any member of staff left us feeling like an inconvenience with the exception of a cleaning lady who was extremely helpful and personable and ironically was probably the lowest paid member of staff.
Staff were great and friendly
A lot of noise late evening from streets
