Breakfast great but would have been better with an egg!
Our stay couldn't have been better! Staff members were genuinely friendly, offered great suggestions on where to dine (really nailed it with The Parrot!) and went out of their to help us. The location is literally the best it could be, built next to the famous cathedral's gate. (The hotel's building is actually older than the gate!). Room was lovely, with a partial view of the cathedral, and breakfast (delivered to room) was fresh and excellent! Killer croissants!
My only regret is that I didn't book directly with the hotel. It is an excellent, historic hotel that deserves to have all our tourist dollars/pounds/euros/etc. Don't make the same mistake I did!
Staff were all fantastic and very accommodating re check-in times, breakfast times etc. Room was comfortable, bathroom a bit small. I don't think they do the full English breakfast any more but the continental is fine. Location couldn't be better - right next to the cathedral gate.
Die Lage und das sehr zuvorkommende Personal. Originelle Unterkunft in einer hervorragenden Lage.
Staying in this historic college was amazing. I couldn’t trade it. The breakfast experience is so special. The staff are incredible. Definitely try to attend Mass!
The guest housing is pretty miserable to be honest. While it’s great to stay at Christ Church, the building is shoved in the rear of the campus, with rooms that leave much to be desired. The view out the window is depressing concrete. The bathroom is the worst offender — super small and water spills everywhere.
Staff was excellent, they were super nice. Easy to find and get to. Room was buggy, bed was good.

unique location
Location was as close to the cathedral as one can get - right outside my window. Friendly and helpful staff gave me a choice of an upgrade to a lower room on the street side but I stayed with my garret. They carried my bag up and down the very steep and narrow stairs.
Old building with uneven floors so head was lower than foot, not comfortable. I switched the bedding around. Be prepared: you’ll be staying in an historic building with many stairs. Fine for me but others may have more difficulty.
We came with Motorcycle and had a great entry into the pedestrian zone Staff was very helpful with tips and arrangements Location is just stunning
Sehr nettes Personal, Möglichkeit Fahrräder abzustellen. Lage ist super.
Room at the front, extremely noisy, garbage truck very early in the morning, also deliveries.
Super freundliches Personal, top Preis Leistungsverhältnis und tolle Lage! Jederzeit wieder!
Centraal gelegen
Kamer was erg warm. Buiten veel lawaai, de gehele nacht
The location is very central, the rooms are very clean and comfortable, the staff very nice and helpful
The streets nearby are very noisy at night so if you need quiet, ask for a room that is not on the street

The walk to the room
Central location, very clean, continental breakfast, full tea tray, stored bag for us
Loud early noise from bin collection etc. Fan ineffective
Fantastic location, right next to cathedral. Very welcoming and helpful staff. Clean, comfortable room in a beautiful old building, full of character. Continental breakfast included. Discounted rate city centre parking via the hotel. Would definitely stay again. Great value for money for such a perfect location. Thank you for a lovely stay.
Mattress was a little soft but this is personal preference. Everything else was excellent!
Super vriendelijk!
Right in the heart of Canterbury. Enjoyed the old architecture of the building. Staff were really friendly and attentive. Cosy room.
Wonderful first stay at the Cathedral Gate Hotel. The location literally could not be better! Quirky and quaint rooms which were just perfect t. Very clean and exceptionally welcoming reception - the lady at the front desk is so lovely. Will definitely be back.
Vynikající místo, skvělý personál.
Location- amazing! And we were in the Joy room with a view of the cathedral out of our window!!!!! The view was worth having a tub versus a standing shower!!! Breakfast- The continental breakfast was great in the very quaint breakfast rooms. Amazing cherry jam! Room- The bed was very comfortable, and it was lovely laying in bed with the breeze coming through the open windows staring at this amazing cathedral and listening to the cooing pigeons and church bells. An experience I will never forget!
Very small bathroom which was actually just fine for me as a very petite person but might not be as pleasant for someone taller. It was very clean and worked great, serving its purpose, although the mirror could be set lower. I couldn't see myself in it at all, not even the top of my head as I'm 5 foot 1 inch. I just used the other mirror over the little table in the room to do my makeup. No biggie!
What a simply superb hotel. Steeped in history (but beautifully furnished to modern standards) this superbly positioned hotel, right by to cathedral gate, was a delight. The staff (all of them) were welcoming, helpful, attentive and efficient. Our room was elegant and well appointed. We parked in the ‘park and ride’ car park, which worked well. And the bus stop was only a short walk to the hotel. I strongly recommend this hotel if you’re visiting Canterbury. One point to note: If you can’t cope with stairs, this is probably not for you, as it’s an old building with lots of stairs to navigate.
Location was excellent. Breakfast had limited choice not really a continental breakfast and the room was very hot and noisy
The room had a tiny toilet and separate tiny shower, the mattress on the bed was uncomfortable and thin, the room was very hot and noisy being at the front of the hotel. The entrance could be made a lot clearer on how to find it. we were given the choice of rooms but we went with the one with the least sets of stairs. The description of the hotel could be more honest. Breakfast was included but basically just cereals toast and fruit.
We were originally booked elsewhere but when we arrived, found the place permanently closed which left us in a it of a bind. We found that Cathedral Gate had two rooms for two nights so gratefully we made our way there. We received the warmest welcome in this delightful quirky place built in 1438. Our room was very well equipped, quiet and comfortable. Stayed for two splendid nights. While there we were given loads of advice and good thoughts on places to visit and restaurants, all turned out to be spot on. We really enjoyed the delicious continental breakfasts too. The hotel was perfectly located, right next to the Cathedral, and convenient for everything. Just loved the unique quirkiness, the crooked walls, the sloping floors, the warm friendly staff. Everything really. Highly recommend.
Very lo£ but comfortable room in a fantastic location
The staff were fabulous. Friendly and helpful. Such an asset. Breakfast was perfect. A cooked breakfast is not needed. The location cannot be beaten for Canterbury. Loved the old building with its quirks. Our room was spacious and super clean.
The bed could have been bigger but this wouldn’t put us off staying again.
Meget hyggelig gammelt hotel. Super beliggenhed.

Stunning location, beautiful quirky accommodation, excellent staff.
Such a great place to stay! Everything was perfect! Especially the friendly and helpful owner. Thanks a lot!
Quaint hotel in a fantastic location
Stairs up to my room were steep with no real handhold. It will be difficult for older people to handle these stairs.
My room was cute, directly facing the cathedral and overlooking the cathedral square. The other side of the hotel faces the town square, so the location is amazing. The continental breakfast was excellent.
I arrived during a heat wave and my room was on the top floor which was like a greenhouse. I was given a fan but there was no a/c and no shower. When I started to overheat, I soaked in cold baths and at night slept covered with wet towels with the fan blowing on me. I wish I'd changed hotels as the heat was dangerous: I'm 79 years old. When checking out I politely suggested to the manager that the temperature could be lowered if they put a blackout shade on the landing window, (there was no covering). He snapped back that he didn't have a problem with the heat! He had a portable a/c unit in the reception area, which would have been nice to have had on the top floor too. My room was like an oven, unfortunately he didn't care. Also, when I arrived, I had to carry my suitcase to my room as the only person on duty was pregnant.
The fact that is was located at the heart of medieval Canterbury and next to the entrance to the cathedral
The bathroom was too small
Ganz entzückendes Hotel direkt neben der Kathedrale, in einem sehr alten Haus, sehr charmant. Sehr aufmerksames Personal, tolles Preis-Leistung-Verhältnis!
Posizione ottima ma un po' rumorosa. Accoglienza fantastica
Amazing location. Friendly staff. Nice room with a view.
It was warm. Breakfast was not a cooked breakfast.

Location and lovely staff
Breakfast a bit limited a cooked option would have been a bonus
Perfecte locatie
The location was literally next to the cathedral and central to all the local shops, lots of pu s and eateries. It's a quirky hotel due to its age but fully functioning, great breakfast. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, who were all exceptional.
There was nothing to dislike
Friendly staff. Courteous, polite and welcoming. My room was peaceful with a partial view of Canterbury Cathedral. The bathroom was beautifully fresh and spotless. I'd definitely stay again.

4th time back, and we love it. Great location, unique rooms and lovely staff. The breakfast is good and all round a great stay.

The quirky hotel layout linking several ancient buildings including a short 'rooftop' walkway to reach our room. Lovely breakfast served at our table.
We liked it all.
This place really feels in the heart of Canterbury and an old and wonky (in a good way) which makes it feel so characterful.
A great little hotel, right next to the cathedral gate, and within walking distance of everything. Had a nice room overlooking the square. The staff is super friendly and helpful.
The street can be a little noisy at night, but it didn’t bother me. The hotel provided earplugs, in the room, in case someone needed them.
Literally next to Cathedral entalrance. Old building and quirky layout. Great view of Cathedral from rear. Lovely staff. Nice breakfast. Good value given location.

The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. The location of the hotel is right in the heart of Canterbury, which is amazing. The room that I stayed in was nice and cosy, and the breakfast options provided by the hotel were lovely.
There wasn't anything that I didn't like, about the hotel
alles was top!
Superb location. Friendly staff. Excellent historic building.
Location couldn’t be better. Nice comfortable room. Staff very helpful
Lots of stairs .
Chose Cathedral Gate Hotel because it was a location for the 1944 film 'A Canterbury Tale' one of my favourite films so could not resist a chance to stay there. Had a great stay thanks to the staff and the building reminding me of my life at The Blue Idol Quaker Meeting House. However, there are a lot of stairs and an uncovered roof terrace walkway so the building is NOT suitable for wheelchair users or other mobility impaired travellers. I stayed in Amity, a twin bed room with shower, toilet, phone, TV and a quirky view from the window. Amity is reached via the roof terrace and a lounge area so I appreciated having my suitcase taken to the room and help with it again when I left. Having breakfast (continental) delivered to my on the first morning felt quite decadent. Chose to use the dining area on the second morning. Beds and room comfy, breakfast plentiful, fresh and delicious and the staff very friendly and helpful. The Cathedral Gate Hotel is a great place for a weekend treat or longer Canterbury based holiday. The hotel is next to the Cathedral's main gate and above the Cathedral shop with bus station (one stop away from Canterbury East Station), shops, NatWest bank, restaurants (like Bill's = edible flower pot desert) and cafés (like Amorino gelato = famous rose flower shaped ice-cream cornets & pots) just a short walk. Glad I chose it.
La situació és excelent.
The location is perfect, next door to the cathedral gate and in the centre of the town so easy walking distance to all the attractions, bars, restaurants and shops. The hotel staff were fantastic, from check-in to the breakfast. Always someone available on reception. The rooftop seating area looking out to the cathedral was a lovely surprise. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Canterbury. I am certainly going to return as my two days stay was not long enough to see everything I wanted.
The location was perfect for being close to Canterbury Cathedral and St Augustine's Abbey. There were places nearby to eat or get a coffee
Central location next to the cathedral. At the centre of the atmospheric city of Canterbury. Easy access to pubs and restaurants. Staff could not be more helpful. Guided us to join evensong at the Cathedral and advised on good restaurants.
A little hot in the heatwave but it will s an old building where A/C is not available/permissible.
Location was excellent. Staff were super friendly and helpful.
If you are staying in a room facing the square, it can be noisy, but earplugs are provided!
Great breakfast. Hotel has a very charming atmosphere.
10 minutes walk to everywhere I wanted to be and view from my window
Nothing loved it
The location is ideal for exploring historic Canterbury! Continental breakfast was good quality food from Tesco.
The street-facing rooms are subject to loud trucking noise at night. There are countless stairs to navigate with your suitcases. It was ungodly hot. The building is very old so all the floors are sloping and uneven.
You could not be more central than at the Cathedral Gate. Breakfast was good, staff very helpful, free water much appreciated in the heat wave.
Literally nothing. The only issue would have been disability access for someone with limited mobility. I think they would struggle, but its a building from medieval times they were short of lifts in those days.
Service, kindness, location, breakfast, ...
Location
Rooms at the front can be noisey.
Great location, history and super friendly staff.
Nothing
We loved the quirkiness of staying in the Cathedral gate wall. The room was comfy and clean and the people who worked at the hotel were amazingly kind and a font of wisdom
We had a bit of trouble figuring out how to get to the place., since we had to drive through the Ballards to pull the car up. Might want to send an email out about this (maybe you did and I missed it.
Position is unsurpassed. I could see the cathedral. It's a collection of very old buildings which once sheltered pilgrims. 24/7 reception were always helpful. Suggestions given for what to see. Nice breakfast, excellent fruit salad. Able to adjust heating to personal preference. Room and bathroom serviced daily.
I was a bit nervous as my room was accessed via the roof and I was concerned about intruders. However rooms have a phone and I was encouraged to contact reception if I needed anything.
All the staff were so welcoming, friendly, and obliging. The hotel is very cosy and quirky, and is ideally located. Breakfast was delicious.
Old interesting building very centrally located.
It is perfectly situated next to the main gate to the cathedral itself. Being a conglomeration of Medieval houses it is quirky inside but charmingly so. It was very quiet and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful.
The only caveat I have is that because it is in the centre of town which is predominantly pedestrian ionised. It is a bit of a challenge to drive to their front door to unload. However, it is not so much a problem as to affect your stay. You just have to be aware.
Location is excellent and some rooms face the cathedral or the main square. Breakfast is great and personnel is really kind. The rooms are clean.
The rooms are quite old and may need some renovation, especially the toilets although this may be challenging since the hotel seems to be in an historic building
Très bien situé. Ambiance atypique, typiquement anglais. On a adoré

Dating back to 1438, Cathedral Gate blends centuries of character with modern comfort in Canterbury’s heart.
Some rooms offer views of Canterbury Cathedral and feature both modern amenities and vintage architectural touches.
Steps from Buttermarket and cathedral precincts, with railway stations a 15-minute walk away for easy exploring.
