that authentic mountain onsen experience

Exactly as advertised, the room where really spacious, clean and quiet. Dinner and breakfast were both really good. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Really enjoyed the private onsen and the music entertainment. Would definitely go again
Un personnel adorable et le lieu magique.
Incredible ambience, gracious hosts, spacious rooms, excellent cuisine, professional service (from the shuttle driver to bar staff), onsen experience, etc.! Loved all the thoughtful details for my kiddo: Amenities and dinner service.
We loved our dinner, unable to finish all the dishes. Felt bad leaving it unfinished when so much care was put into our meals.
Dinner and the breakfast buffet were great. We were greeted at the dinner table by English speaking staff, who guided us through the menu. Non-alcoholic drinks were available for free. The open air onsen was great.
Our room was relatively dated, with a rattling A/C unit but outside our window.

The hotel’s location on the side of the valley, and the view from our bedroom window was beautiful. The food was absolutely incredible, every dish was perfectly presented and so flavoursome! The thing I loved the most though was the amazing and helpful staff, in all areas - the front reception desk team and the dining room staff and the shuttle bus drivers, and the staff member who brought us hot water to our room in the mornings - thank you!
Nothing
Amazing traditional ryokan, very aesthetic. Staff were nice, rooms were spacious and great with a kotatsu as well. Slept on a futon with this bead like pillow which I didn’t think I would like as I get migraines a lot from hard surfaces but I didn’t have any issues after waking up.
Not major but the wifi was a bit weak, half the room had a weak connection and low bars from time to time. Seems like the ap is in the basement or something as even parts of the ground floor had a very weak connection and would drop out sometimes. It’s very rural so there’s nothing else to do outside of the ryokan but again it’s nothing major as it was still usable.
private open air bath

Traditional hotel in a beautiful setting, meals were excellent, staff attentive and welcoming.
Beds a little uncomfortable

Ambience.... the evening performances... great onsen!

Absolument rien
The hotel offers excellent facilities and impressive design that blends perfectly with its surroundings. The room was spacious, spotless, and very comfortable. The staff were exceptionally helpful throughout the stay, making everything smooth and welcoming. The food was delicious, and the setting—nestled in nature—made the experience even more relaxing. A highlight was the option to reserve a private onsen for 40 minutes at a very reasonable price, adding a touch of luxury and privacy to an already wonderful stay.
Located in the mountain area (you would ideally need a car)

It was so peaceful
The outdoor onsen was very beautiful!! Our room with the window overlooking the river also had a great view and was the right size for us 3 girls. The food was tasty and our server was amazingly helpful to us! Overall a wonderful and peaceful stay
Our room didn't have AC - we solved this by opening the window

Everything
The property address on the booking.com app is wrong. As a result we missed a private onsen I had booked as we were late and they could not reschedule due it being booked out. Very annoyed at the incorrect address.
Beautiful views and osens. You can book a private onsen for you and partner.
It’s very commercialized.
We wanted to visit the so-called Demon Slayer castle hotel. It’s out of the way so we rented a car rather than take transit. The drive itself was four hours from Tokyo. From the parking lot staff, to front desk, housekeeping and everyone there… the staff were all amazingly kind and patient. Not everyone speaks English, but there are a few. The rooms are spacious, clean, and very ryokan style (tatami) and the onsen was super clean. We had Kaiseki dinner and it was quite the experience. Food was delicious at dinner and the buffet lunch was traditionally Japanese. The stand out for us was the AIZU yogurt and AIZU maple syrup made from local chestnut trees. If anyone at Ookawaso reads this, please accept our thank you. You were all wonderful and we hope to visit from Canada again someday. Thank you for your patience with my eight year old son and our horrible Japanese.
We had an incredible stay here: the ryokan is impressive (especially the arrival with the person playing the shamisen), very beautiful, the food excellent and adaptable (we took vegetarian meals), the establishment is child-friendly (e.g. yukata at their sizes, arrival kits, high chairs and adapted cutlery), the room is magnificent and very suitable for a family. A bookable shuttle service is in place and works very well, allowing us to leave and arrive from Aizu Wakamatsu station. We also reserved the outdoor bath for private use: incredible! The staff is adorable and helpful: thank you very much!
Nothing :)
Cleanliness, Decoration, Dinner choice, Amenities
Breakfast choice is not much
Ookawaso was a great stay. The kaiseki dinner is fantastic and the shamisen performance in the evening is great as well. There is a sake bar where you can fill your own glass of sake in exchange for coins which was very convenient when drinking lots of it. One of the staff members can speak perfect english since she was born in the Philippines and she was really lovely and made sure we had a great time. The onsen facility is great but the private outdoor onsen is not worth it - super hot so we couldn't get in it after booking it for an hour. no option to mix cool water into the pools which was a real bummer. They provide a free shuttle directly to aizu wakamatsu station which was great for us. Overall great stay
Private onsen is way too hot and you can't adjust the temperature
property is very comfortable and staff can speak english
breakfast was good with quite a bit of choices. Was very surprised at how good the croissants were, as good as those I had before in Paris. Something different was the 'Egg fried rice' which was whipped egg whites on yummy rice and a raw yolk. Definitely should try the Outdoor bath, its beautiful.
the trains and buses were not very frequent so need to time your activities well, otherwise taking the taxi can be quite expensive. But the hotel makes up for it by offering free shuttles and transfers at Aizu-wakamatsu and Ashinomaki onsen stations, reservations required though
The staff were extremely friendly and very customer service oriented. The room and facilities were of extremely high quality - I felt as if I was in a 5 star hotel. The dinner was perfect. Hot springs are very pleasant.
The breakfast, though high quality, was not to my taste - It was traditionally Japanese and there were no other choices available. The buses were not easily available, and I had to take a rather expensive taxi from Aizuwakamatsu as it was getting late when we arrived via train there.
Nice hotel with nice onsen facing the forest. Dinner and breakfast were both good
Nothing
In the dinner, you gave me a narrow, shaking, extra table in a small Conner, while the other got a bigger table even though the number of people was the same. The location is so so.
Koto player during our stay. Was very traditional and super cool!

To make it simple, everything! The staff is very careful, we feel the will to do well and the Japanese know-how! The room was just amazing, the view breathtaking! The dinner was amazing too, the dishes scroll non-stop for 1 hour, special mention to the waitress who took care of us she was more than perfect! We ended our evening with a private onsen, as a couple, it was perfect Thanks to the staff for doing such a good job
Nothing
Great Onsen Hotel. Great Dinner and Breakfast. Car Park is very convenient.
No Yukata for 2XL.
Simpy WOW! It is really an amazing place. We stayed there for one night just to get the experience in staying in a ryokan with onsen. We like anime so we chose this one as it has some features of Demon Slayer anime :) Room was amazing, sleeping on futons was really comfortable. Room was spacious. We were wearing yukatas during our stay and it was just amazing! Onsen was wonderful! And the dinner - OMG - super tasty! we felt really welcomed there and taken care of. One staff member who spoke English very well was explaining us what we were eating, how to cook different parts of the meal etc. It was so lovely. We really appreciate that! If we ever come to Japan again we will go there for sure.
Beautiful location by the river, lovely Japanese style room, wonderfully relaxing private outdoor onsen which you can book for 45 minutes, amazing kaiseki evening meal. The evening shamisen performance was a nice touch. The staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome, spoke English to us, and catered for my husband’s food allergy. Thanks so much for a delightful stay!

The onsen part of the bathhouse were really pleasant. The outer bath could make you really relaxed.
In the public bathhouse there was always hair on the floor of the changing room. The food was okay, the ingredients weren't as high quality. I expected a little bit more care for the food.
Nice location, great food, great onsen, have private onsen but too little time table for reserve.
It’s a beautiful hotel nestled into the hillside by the river. The reception area is amazing, especially with the Shamisen lady is playing. The traditional rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable.
Nothing.
A stunning onsen. Absolutely top class. Wonderful anbience. Greeted by a beautiful japanese woman playing the shamisen in the lobby - fantastic - with the sound of rushing water surrounding her. Staff all delightful. Rooms large and comfy with fabulous views. This was truly an only in Japan experience!
The location is a little out of the way but we had a car so not too much of a problem.
Staff where really helpful and friendly. Great location with fabulous views with good shuttle bus services back into Aizu-Wakamatsu.
We stayed in the traditional Japanese rooms which was a good experience but the bathrooms would benefit from a refresh and upgrade.
I came here as a Demon Slayer fan as the hotel is said to have inspired the Infinity Castle in the series. I absolutely loved the grand lobby with the traditional performance! As a vegan guest, the staff went above and beyond to help me make sure everything I eat is safe. I must say the short haired lady with glasses (sorry forgot her name) who speaks fluent English made me feel really at home. Thank you for the lovely experience.
Maybe more vegan friendly options for breakfast buffet with clearly labeled ingredients list would be helpful for guests with dietary restrictions.
Beautiful ryokan, there's traditional music performance at the centre of the lobby from 4pm-6pm. The manga/anime Demon Slayer infinity castle based on this hotel. Well presented and tasty kaiseki dinner, good selection of breast buffet and great customer service. Available yukata that fit all sizes including baby/toddler (very cute). Spacious Japanese room with river view, although the facilities/furnitures are quite old. Interesting public bath with three tiers open bath with river/mountains view. Not so convenient to travel on public transport, but great with rental car to get there.
Outdated facilities/furniture, selection of amenities can be improved.
This is an impressive onsen hotel. All rooms face the natural mountain side above a fast moving river. The lobby is exceptional with live traditional shamisen music played nightly before the dinner hour. A river of water cascades through the ground floor of the lobby which adds the sound of rustling water. Guests may have (optional reserved) dinner meals in rooms near the moving water. All in all the lobby, onsen, food, and staff make for a relaxing location. The river views in any season are amazing.
All rooms have not been refreshed and we found ourselves in a room the first night which was dated. The following day I convinced the hotel to move us to a different room which was really impressive and all amenities were new. The view was nearly identical since all rooms face the same mountain.
Hotel Lobby.

Clean and well prepared, especially they have the special servers who speak English very well so my husband and I were very pleased and enjoyed every moment at our stay.
None
Beautiful property with traditional Japanese rooms. Hotel staff were extremely friendly and accommodating.
As a first time Onsen user, it would have been helpful to have someone review the proper way to use the baths.
The staff at the reception were very helpful and were able to communicate patiently due to the limited English. The valley views from the room was nice. Room heating was good for the cold winter. The food and service at dinner was splendid. They assigned an English speaking staff member who took care of our needs meticulously.
