The carpet in the room was weirdly damp and didn't smell great.

Reviewed Feb 9, 2026Auf unserer Reise von Johannesburg bis Kapstadt, haben wir im Kowie River Guesthaus eine Nacht Station gemacht, gleich vorweg, das ist zu wenig, es reicht leider nicht für einen Spaziergang am Fluß oder weitere Aktivitäten rund um Port Alfred. Der Tipp des Hausherrn beim Ocean Basket zu Abend zu essen, war ein Volltreffer, ebenso das Frühstück am nächsten Morgen, serviert auf deiner eigenen Terrasse bzw. Balkon. Das Kowie River Guesthaus ist sehr, sehr empfehlenswert.

Reviewed Oct 12, 2025The hospitality and customer service from the host and staff was exceptional . Best for couples or teenagers if you are travelling with family but not young ones or toddlers . The place is beautiful , clean and morden . The host is 1 message away for any help you might need . Loved it 🥰
Not child friendly much ☹️but they were understanding of the fact that we had little ones but as parents we didn't feel free for them to freely play eg with their soccer ball by the garden area as we had to consider other guests and noise they could make . Would definitely come back without the kids.

Reviewed Oct 4, 2025Everything from its location overlooking the Kowie River through to its owners who were excellent hosts, for myself personally I found it to be an absolutely wonderful stay and will without a shred of doubt be visiting again for my next trip to Port Alfred.
Only thing I can mention is the hot water. I had a bath to relax after a long day and following that was going to shower, at which time the water was not hot enough to do so. It’s most likely due to the size of the geyser but this should not be an issue in most instances.

Reiches Vogel-Leben, wunderbare Ruhe, fabelhafter Sonnenuntergang, ein erfrischendes Bad im Fluss, und eine tolle Grillterrasse mit Blick auf den Fluss, die dahinter liegenden Auen und die Uferpromenade. Die Unterkunft ist mit allem erdenklichen Komfort ausgestattet, Alles picobello, der Gastgeber nahm sich viel Zeit uns einzuweisen, und uns mit Tipps und Hinweisen zu versorgen. Das Frühstück wurde auf der Terrasse serviert, individuelle Wünsche wurden berücksichtigt. Alles topp.

Cooling off in the stunning pool was fantastic, after the hot December days. Absolutely delicious breakfast - the fruit salad was so fresh and vibrant! And the hosts are delightful people - friendly and helpful.
My children didn't like that the bathroom door couldn't lock from the inside! But that didn't bother the adults :)

Limited choice of places to eat at night if walking as unfortunately the night we stayed a couple of eating places were shut and others were very quiet. Advised not to walk to other side of river after dark.

Reviewed Mar 21, 2024Beautiful location. Very picturesque and peaceful. Rooms were stunning and well equipped. The host, Ditte, and her husband are just wonderful. Very warm and welcoming and ready to help with anything we needed. The breakfast is phenomenal and was brought to our room to enjoy on our private balcony overlooking the lovely views. We will definitely stay again.
We had 3 rooms with all generations of the family staying. My father in law will always find something to complain about…but this was the first time he didn’t complain! So there was nothing we didn’t like.

Loadshedding is a pain. Most places I’ve stayed in these last 12 weeks have made a plan to combat this. Also breakfast in room is fine when weather is good. It was definitely not easy as it was cold and rainy and nowhere in the bedroom to eat comfortably

Reviewed Jan 24, 2024A really lovely place to stay for a few days and enjoy the town of Port Alfred. Very relaxing with charming hosts who looked after us splendidly. We played golf at Royal Port Alfred and it was a delight. Visited the oldest pub in South Africa, The Pig and Whistle in nearby Bathurst. Magnificent breakfasts.
