This hotel was much more modern than I had expected. Our room felt very new, clean and comfortable. It was compact, but perfectly adequate for two people staying for two nights. The atmosphere of the hotel was another highlight. It felt elegant yet simple, with a friendly and communal atmosphere. The complimentary drinks and snacks available for breakfast were also a very nice touch. The location was excellent—very close to the station and a shopping mall, as well as conveniently located near the start of one of the Nakasendo walking routes. If you don't want to walk all the way to Magome, it is also very easy to take a bus. Everything was well signposted and easy to understand, with information available in English. We loved walking the Nakasendo, especially our walk to Tsumago. On the way back, we simply took the train from Nagiso to Nakatsugawa, which was very convenient.
The only minor inconvenience was that the toilet was on a different floor, which was slightly inconvenient for my husband. For me, however, it was not a problem, as the shared toilet was located right next to our room. Overall, we had a lovely and comfortable stay and would definitely recommend it as a convenient base for exploring the Nakasendo.
Great location, nice design, nice staff
Nicely refurbished historic ryokan building, very clean and trendy. Staff was exceptionally friendly and can easily handle requests/questions in English. Very quiet for a place with such generally young clientele. Less than 5 minute walk to Nakatsugawa Station and several restaurants. The Chinese restaurant just around the corner is especially good! Coin laundry facilities were extremely helpful too. Overall, good value for money, and a good base for buses and trains to tourist attractions like Magome and Tsumago "samurai post towns".
The stairs were quite steep and hard on the knees. This was an issue because men's shower and restroom are on the third floor, while women's are on the second, and that literally hurts if you are older than the average guest, like we are. The Wagyu burger they offer in their first floor restaurant looks great but costs more than a meal for two at a "normal" restaurant. Overall, though, it was a great place to stay!
Recomand.
Everyone is very friendly, price is fair and location is superb

The position.
-When we returned from our excursion at around 7:30 p.m., we needed to have dinner, but all the restaurants were “sold out,” and even the Ryokan’s own restaurant had no availability for us. As we are not locals, we were not aware that it was necessary to make a dinner reservation in advance. Unfortunately, the Ryokan staff were not particularly kind or helpful in suggesting alternative places where we could eat. - very small room - the breakfast was quite disappointing. It was not a proper breakfast, but simply instant coffee or tea and two or three packaged snacks.

Location, friendly staff
Room did not smell fresh- hard to get fresh air in the room. Likely linked to climate.

Great staff, facilities, was clean. I had no problems!
Walls were thin.
Nice and cosy place. Close to the station, so it is easy to get to from Nagoya and easy to get to both Tsumago and Magome. The staff was very sweet and helpful
Friendly service, great location, clean rooms and amenities.
That we only booked for one night!
De ligging
De bedden
The best sleep I’ve had, it made me want to buy tatami back home
Toilets are shared but just keep that in mind before booking, not a problem for me but just need others to be aware
Bel ryokan a Nakatsugawa. Consigliato
Great location, near amenities Nice dinner although a bit pricey
Female toilets on another floor Too many changes of house sandals and also too big, a fall risk Breakfast can be improved as there aren’t many places opened for more substantial meal
Ontbijt matig.
Muy buena ubicación y personal muy amable
People are frienly and the place was clean
This is really an hostel with minimum comfort at the price of a three stars hotel. It does not worth it. Plus because this is also a burger restaurant, the bref smell is everywhere and a bit discusting.
The staff was super friendly. More hostel-style stay. We were only in Nakatsagawa for one night but hung out in the bar area with the staff and enjoyed their company.
Walls are thin so it can be a bit noisy, but this was expected based on the description.

The staff were very helpful, nice and professional! Food is good as well.
Shared facilities are uncomfortably below par. Room was not very comfortable and bathroom got messy by days end. Too many guests for limited facilities.
Posizione perfetta, design moderno, accogliente
The friendly staff and welcoming communal area
Shared toilets
Great, well setup hotel.
Bathroom on separate floor.
Lovely home and great service
Shared bathroom
Convenient, clean, nice staff and just simple. I felt great being there.
The staff were very kind and helpful, it is always very reassuring to me to know there are friendly staff that can help me if I need it. The room was very spacious for a single person which was also wonderful. The painted closet doors and the smell of the tatami were great too. The bathroom and showers were kept very clean despite being shared which was a relief. Also, the atmosphere downstairs in the main area was very relaxing.
While the room itself was wonderful, the futon was quite thin and hard, more than I am used to in a futon. I went on a long hike, so it was not very pleasant to sleep on such a hard surface afterwards. Additionally, the walls were quite thin so the noises of the city were very loud throughout the night, it was easy to hear the drunk people on the street. Luckily I am a deep sleeper, so once I fell asleep it wasn't an issue.
The room was clean.
The location is a 30 minute bus ride to Magome. Facilities were basic. I thought it would have more of a traditional ryokan feel but other than the beds being on the floor and no furniture in the room, that was about it
It's a great place, close to the train station. They give free bread snacks in the morning, and also onigiri for a price. There's a lunch/dinner burger deal too, as well as free coffee and tea. The bathroom was shared, and so was the shower. We used it to hike from Nakatsugawa to Magome, then Tsumago, then Nagisa, which are all quite easily reachable with about 5-6~ hours of walking in about 20km hike. The room itself doesn't have much and you sleep on a Japanese mat, which isn't too bad but you shouldn't expect a feather soft experience. Overall a great experience.
The washing machine room was a bit stinky and the clothes of the drier didn't come out very dry.
Clean and comfortable The dry area of the bathroom was well sealed from the outside, hence it didnt feel very cold stepping out to the dry area to towel dry. Good quality soap, shampoo, face cleanser. Hand rubs provided within the room! Gacha upon check in for a free welcome drink
-
I stayed for 1 night only, but it was a very pleasant experience. Cozy and clean. Breakfast soup and bread is a nice touch, and there´s free coffee/tea and a welcome drink. My room was a spacious traditional Japanese room with a window and view to the street. There´s a shopping mall in the walking distance with a big Daiso and a nice canteen. Very close to Nakatsugawa train station and bus stop to go to Magome-juku if you´re hiking the Nakasendo like I did. A great place to stay!
Cosy and gives the feel of ryokan with all the modern facilities!
Ras
Room was clean, dark during the night, showers clean and good. Shared space at entrance with tea and coffea . All good
The entrance room is nice, and everything is clean
Expensive for what they offer, and description on booking.com does not match reality. We were traveling with two kids (1 and 4), and booked the hotel since it was on our way and it offered a triple room (three futons mentioned explicitly in the description), so we thought we could have a comfortable rest. When we arrived however, they simply told us that only two futons can be prepared since the booking was made for only two adults, and that the misunderstanding is due to booking.com and/or misunderstandings often happening with foreigners. I’ve been living in Japan now for over 7 years, but this is the first time encountering this type of situation.. An additional futon was possible, but only via another upcharge.. Given the already steep price for what it is, I don’t think it is fair.. The fact that nowhere in the description or booking process it was mentioned that not all of the 3 futons would be allocated for us, and afterwards there was no real understanding for the misunderstanding caused by this, was quite sad.. We did not enjoy our stay here.
Friendly staff, great location for hiking the nakasendo, very clean
The name implies traditional Japanese lodging, but in fact it has been renovated to more of a standard hotel and feels like a hostel. Our room was smaller than those pictured and lacked any space for luggage whatsoever. The biggest issue was that the walls are poorly insulated, so we were continually woken up by other guests opening and closing their doors
Very reasonably priced - good value for money. Nice common room on the ground floor. Welcoming staff.
As we were on the third floor, the two women in our group had to go downstairs to the second floor for toilet and shower facilities. Otherwise, all good.
Loved my traditional room in this Inn, lots of space, bed very comfy. The staff were super friendly by looking after me. The showers were communal and were nicely hot with high pressure. Brilliant place to stay before starting the Nakasendo, highly recommend it and also if you are around for dinner make sure to try their Waygu Burger with Wasabi Mayo & Salt. Superb!!
The room was so nice and private. Definitely felt authentic to be staying there while traveling through Japan.
Very clean and comfortable. Staff was friendly. Great location close to the train station.
Great location Easy checking in/ friendly and helpful staff
Our room was big for 4 people. Facilities were very clean. Close to station. Lots of info on the trails. Staff helpful.
Very practical location close to the train station, the extras are great, from a welcome drink, breakfast, and practical luggage storage, even overnight as we went over to the Nakasendo trail and spent a night in Tsumago. I would even stay longer here and come back from the walk if I did it again.
Nothing, everything was perfect. I guess the password for the women's showers is a bit too much, but nothing important.
A traditional Japanese-style futon room with a pleasant scent of fresh straw mats. 5 mins to the railway and bus station.
Friendly staff
Seating at reception area not very comfortable/inviting
The staff is friendly, you can store the luggage near the reception. They provide a little complimentary breakfast.

What guests love
Areas to consider
Cleanliness
8.3/10Multiple guests commented that rooms and shared facilities were tidy and well maintained; however several reviews noted a persistent meat/restaurant odor in rooms and occasional lack of fresh air, which lowers the score slightly.
Service
9.6/10Consistently praised staff — described as friendly, helpful and welcoming, with guests enjoying interaction in the bar area and receiving local/trekking information; reception described as exceptional in several reviews.
Location
9.4/10Very frequently noted as a major positive: short walk to Nakatsugawa station, convenient for transit and access to Magome/Tsumago, near supermarkets and restaurants.
Room Quality
7.6/10Mixed: cosy traditional tatami/futon experience and some spacious clean rooms reported, but multiple guests mention thin walls (noisy), compact rooms with luggage challenges and some discomfort for those not used to floor sleeping.
Amenities
8.4/10Shared baths/toilets are clean and well equipped with good water pressure; there is an on-site bar/restaurant and helpful guest information — minor inconveniences include separate female toilets on another floor and multiple sizes of house sandals.
Value for Money
7.9/10Opinions split: some guests found it good value for location and service, others felt it was priced like a three‑star hotel despite a hostel/ryokan level of comfort, leading to a slightly below-average score.
Food and Beverage
7.6/10Guests enjoyed the dinner options (notably a wagyu burger) but many mentioned the restaurant smell reaching guest floors and that dinner can be pricey; breakfast described as simple (bread and drinks) and could be improved.
Overall Experience
10/10Overall very positive sentiment: many guests describe a great stay, would return (including solo travellers), recommend for transit/trekking, and highlight staff friendliness and convenient location — these strong positives drive a high overall impression.
