Sails Motel

The motel is a small property of only 5 or 6 rooms. Our room was quite simple, but overall was quiet and clean.

In the two days we were there we never saw a staff member. Our name and room was noted on a white board -with the key being in the door.

Great location, quiet and private. Had Netflix and Chrome cast.

No milk, no blankets, no one at the office, just a whiteboard. Room was freezing cold on arrival and shower was lacking amenities.

Room was well away from any roads, so it was very quiet. Easy walk into the town centre for shopping and dining.

Driveway is not suitable for any vehicle bigger than a corolla. Had to buy some polish to clean the marks off the paint of the rental car that were caused by the plants growing along both sides of the difficult driveway. The room had an odour of being over disinfected. sofa/sofa bed was too low, and you had to lean your head way back to watch the TV, why mount the tv so high?

Comfy bed and very good shower. Had everything we needed for a one night stay. Its a rustic little place.

Entrance is along the waterfront but the motel is down a long, rather overgrown driveway so there is no view. Unfortunately the weather was terrible so everything was a little bleak.

Very private, quiet, quirky location - very fun. Loved the beachy feel. Walking distance to town centre, food and beach. we had everything we needed for our stay in the studio and kitchenette.

Even with the instructions we struggled to work the two remotes for the TV for the longest time but got there in the end.

We were upgraded to a very large suite with good kitchen. Location was very close to the dolphin encounter centre.

The motel is tucked away from the main street so very quiet and also clean, comfortable and well equipped. Very well taken care of. Good value.

Tv a bit limited

The location was good, just over the road from the beach. The manager was very helpful. The bed was very comfortable The patio was nice and the parking was good.

There was a strong smell of carbolic cleaner, which made the room smell like a public loo. Also I did not like the shower, like a wet room with a plastic curtain

I really appreciated the flexibility in check out, which allowed me to do the early morning Albatross Encounter without rushing afterwards

The room had the necessities required and was clean except for the bathroom floor. Free parking and proximity to restaurants etc of the area.

The photos online of the location were very deceptive, yes it was convenient but the motel accommodation was down a skinny driveway not overlooking the coastline as depicted. The grounds were untended, run down, uninviting and that combined with the contactless reception made us wonder if we were actually at a motel. The room was clean but had a stale smell and the bathroom floor needed a thorough scrub.

It was very clean, well equipped, good bathroom and comfy bed! Good location opposite the beach and next to Dolphin Encounter. Lots of space. V helpful host who found us a hot plate when BBQ not working

The bed was very comfortable, the location is very close to the beach and the unit was quite large.

The TV didn’t work and neither did the heated towel rail and a light over the couch. There was no power on one side of the bed for a phone to charge and only a screw on the toilet instead of a button to flush with. It needs an exhaust fan in the bathroom and we couldn’t find out which unit we had or how to get in until I saw a sign lying on a desk in the office.

Nicely decorated, comfortable spacious room just across the street from the beach. Great outdoor patio, large bathroom, comfortable bed.

This motel is absolutely delightful - traditional, quiet, perfectly situated on the esplanade about halfway between the Pier Hotel and the town centre. Units are spacious, comfortable, well-equipped and clean. Highly recommended.

Great location 15 minute walk to restaurants and shops. Motel is down a narrow driveway so vert quiet and secluded. As we had bikes with us the covered porch was useful for housing our bikes.

Access was very tight with a narrow twisting road. Reception staff difficult to locate. Basic laundry facilities. Had a tired appearance.

The beds were the most comfortable I've ever slept in! Very clean and had everything we needed..

The unit is very big, comfortable and clear. The kitchen is super clear and no any odd smear. The lady managing this place is very nice. The 2nd day was running, she bought umbrella for all units.

The Sails Motel is the perfect Kaikoura location if you value a quiet, secure, and convenient location. The rooms are large, equipped with all the basics, and very comfortable. Also super clean! Plenty of hot water and a great bed. Walk out your door, and you're in a private parking area/compound; walk around the corner, and you're in the heart of the Kaikoura waterfront, just a couple of minutes' walk from Kaikoura Seal Swim (don't miss that by the way-- amazing!). The staff is great. Super friendly. There is not in-room laundry or full cooking facilities (there is a well-equipped kitchenette, but no range or oven). The staff helped us to use the property's laundry and the shared gas grill. The beach is lovely, but the highlight of Kaikoura to me was the NZ fur seal colony on the rocky point. We visited it by land and sea (kayaks, and the aforementioned seal swim), and there were great birds and fish to see as well.

If you know and expect that this is a great value, quiet, clean, comfortable, and convenient location, then there's absolutely nothing to dislike. Relax and enjoy. Just don't expect a view of the ocean, and know the vibe is plain, not fancy.

Very quiet down a driveway (quite narrow though, could be challenging for a big car). Excellent location, opposite the beach and a short level walk into town. The unit has a covered patio at the front of the unit which is nice for having a drink and snack after a day of sightseeing.

Nothing really. Of note, the kitchenette does not provide anything in the way of cooking but there is a BBQ.

Sehr freundlicher Empfang. Wir waren 2 Nächte in Kaikoura und für uns war alles perfekt. Eigener Parkplatz vor dem Zimmer. Restaurants und Cafés gut zu Fuß zu erreichen.

Die Heizdecke ist etwas zu schmal für das Bett, sodass auf jeden Fall einer auf dem Plastik Knopf schlafen müsste. Wir haben sie einfach vom Bett genommen für unseren Aufenthalt.

The staff were lovely and very friendly, and the location was amazing. We didn’t spend much time in the room as we were out and about most of the time, so it worked fine as a base. The limited facilities weren’t an issue for us as we didn’t need much

The room felt tired and dated inside. The bed wasn’t comfortable, and the room was far too hot — air conditioning would have made a big difference. Overall, it was fine but a bit tired and uncomfortable.

The motel was comfortable and had everything we needed. Great location to get to the Whale watching and fur seals.

The motels drive was quite narrow if you are driving big car, which we were. We were lucky that nobody was wanting to go the opposite direction. I wouldn’t want to have to reverse especially around the bends.

Location is excellent, not on the main road, but up a driveway. This made it feel very quiet and peaceful with easy secure parking. Nice clean comfortable room with ensuite, couch and table and chairs and two chairs outside to enjoy the sun

Wifi was a bit slow which made using Netflix difficult

At first we thought that the property looked a bit old but it had everything we needed. The shower was amazing. Hot and strong. Staying in there a bit longer than ususal! It was cold, wet and raining when we were in town so were very pleased to find an electric blanket and bathroom heater which both worked wonderfully. Great location for all the sites we wanted to see.

Very comfortable. Well equipped, great bedding, easy access and consistent shower, very peaceful. It exceeded my expectations.
