Blue on Water

We enjoyed Sullivan’s hospitality and stories. The location was excellent and the restaurant for breakfast was good.

The noise from the bar downstairs at night and having the cupboards above the bed which had sharp edges could easily be hit in the night if your half asleep and needed to go to the washroom.

The Breakfasts were the best and the location of restaurant is front and centre to all the sites. An excellent breakfast before going out for the day of sightseeing.

Location was okay for downtown.

The window was a sky light which is no egress. Check in was poorly done and parking was confusing, distant from hotel and bad signage for direction. The room was dark and felt like a basement.

Cool aesthetic – architecture and decor have plenty of personality. The staff are exceptionally helpful and friendly, shout out to Haley(?) who took the time during her restaurant shift to walk me through the complexities of parking (in a separate building with access control etc.). The Blue on Water restaurant is fantastic with excellent food and service.

We had a room facing Water St., and could hear the music overlapping from 5 different bars/clubs until 2am from Thursday onwards. Not much the hotel can do about it but be aware if you are a light sleeper.

Beautiful. Very nice room with character. Staff is literally top notch. I have not been so impressed in staff at any hotel.

Block party in town and difficult to get around. Not property fault. They had parking down street and staff actually came to the lot to ensure we found our way! Wow!

Booked last minute after a flight cancellation. Staff were fantastic, so friendly and helpful. Booked a superior room and deluxe suite. Both rooms were very big and with huge bathrooms. The suite had a roof terrace (though because of a nesting gull with a chick, the mother gull would try to attack if you went out on the terrace). Great location on the main street. Breakfast was not included in the room rate, but very good!

Missing do not disturb signs for doors, which is a small necessity and meant housekeeping couldn't know i didn’t need them and entered the room while i was in there. Our rooms where on the 2nd and 3rd floor and you could hear the loud music from the bar below and street outside. While this didn't bother me, it may be a deal breaker to others. The superior room (205) had a very small, high up, almost skylight - so no proper window. And this is not mentioned on their website or booking.com. Again, did not bother me as just needed somewhere to sleep, but may be a problem for others.

The staff went over and above. Room was clean and very nicely done.

The bathroom is an odd design due to space. When you stand up from the toilet, you pretty much hit your head on a wall cutting out. I'm only 5'2", so anyone taller would have to be very careful. Also, the floors are VERY slippery when wet.

The room was beautiful. The bathroom was very nice with a very nice bathtub.

Our room was on the 2nd floor facing Water St. and it was very loud into the evening. If the room was facing any other direction I think that it would have been a lot quieter. It was also very loud every time someone took the stairs which were right outside of our room.

Great location! Pubs/restaurants are just outside your hotel!

Cost was a bit steep however understandable as all other hotel prices were in increased due to a concert.

Parking situation and communication regarding it. Conflicting instructions ahead of time--in one communication, it seemed that we should stop at the front of the hotel to drop off our bags and get a parking pass before parking, in another it seemed to indicate we should park first. First, we tried to get to the front of the building, but the street is blocked off (it is a pedestrian area in the summer). Then, we parked in the designated lot/area, only to find the door to enter the building locked. Luckily, a parking attendant happened to be walking by and let me into the building. One of us waited in the car (so we wouldn't be ticketed/towed) while the other went to check in and get the parking pass and key fob to the locked building where the parking is. Not sure what I would have done if I'd been by myself. Same problem on check-out: we had to return the parking building key fob before we had our car. Learning from our earlier experience, we figured this would be the case, so before returning the fob, we positioned one person inside the locked building to open the door after the other person had checked out. Definitely not a situation you want to be dealing with as weary travelers!

The property is located on Water Street in the center of the historic district. It has been lovingly restored and maintained. The rooms are comfortable and beautiful, and the in-house bar and restaurant are five-star establishments.

If I had a rental car, I would not know where to park it. Blue is a small boutique hotel.

your staff is exceptional - super friendly and helpful and kind. I have traveled a great deal and this is the best staff I have encountered. Loved my room and bathroom.

Noise level isn't great. Elevator is peculiar. From the outside, it looks a bit sketchy, but my room was fabulous. Breakfast was delicious but pricey.

I booked this room for my daughter and she was so happy with it and was very clean and the staff were so friendly.

Es ist ein etwas spezielles Haus, wie das schon mal bei Boutique Hotels vorkommt. Man muss auch Einschränkungen lieben. Die Mahlzeiten sind hervorragend und das Personal sehr hilfsbereit. Parken überhaupt kein Problem.

Die erwähnten Einschränkungen bestehen in einem Lift ( kein Aufzug), in unerwarteten Stufen im Zimmer, in einem düsteren Ambiente (mag man vielleicht auch als gemütlich empfinden), in Gardinen, die nicht alle Fenster verdunkeln, in einem Bad, bei dem man nicht einschätzen kann, ob der Boden sauber ist und einem niedrigen Bett, dessen Matratze vielleicht doch nicht so ganz top ist.

The room was wonderfully decorated, and extremely clean. We needed to ask for cream, but it was willingly given to us. Staff spoke to us each time we entered it exited.

We did not appreciated ate needing to walk through the bar to get to and from our room.

Engaging decor; so much more interesting than their corporate competitors. Restaurant downstairs was excellent for both dinner and breakfast. Excellent location; we walked to the Signal Hill trail and followed it up to the lookout which made for a lovely Sunday morning walk.

Sully the mgr was soooo friendly. He went above and beyond. The room was really cool looking ---original exposed brickwall, super comfy bed. Can't find a better central spot. We ate in the bar. Good local food! We wished our travel plans afforded the opportunity to stay longer.

It was conveniently located downtown, beautiful refurbished historical building with modern amenities. Cozy felt like “home”

I would highly recommend Blue on Water. I don't love staying at hotels but thoroughly enjoyed my stay. My room was quite, comfortable and clean and I would definitely stay at Blue again. They also have one of the better restaurants in St John's and the central location is great.

While I love Blue on Water I would not recommend it to anyone with mobility issues. There is a small lift in the building but the rooms are easier to access by the staircase. There's also a small step into the building and the doors are relatively narrow.

Rooms were lovely and massive and very well decorated! Both rooms were stayed in had very large bathrooms with soaker bath and separate shower. The staff were lovely and the restaurant downstairs was great too! Also, the location was great for other pubs, restaurants and wee stores!

J'ai eu deux chambres différentes durant mon séjour, magnifiques! Juste un petit problème technique que j'ai oublié de signaler à l'établissement avant mon départ, dans la première chambre (la 304), le système de chauffage était assez bruyant, j'ai du le couper durant la nuit... Wonderful hotel in the centre of St John’s. Superb friendly staff and lovely room with super sleepy bed and good bathroom with warm floors. Dinner food was excellent and parking was just around the corner. Overall, a great stay!

Loved my stay here! Came for a wedding and it was the perfect central location. Easy to walk out the door and find what you need. Loved the coziness of the room. Was even better than the photos. Loved the dimmable lighting in the room. Great idea. The bed felt luxurious. Having the bar restaurant downstairs was great to come home to. The staff were all super friendly and helpful. Nearby reccommend Cafe Terre for coffee. Anderson's for a great smash burger. Rocket Bakery is cute. Sound salon for hair. Renting a car to go to Signal hill, cape spear, petty harbor and walk the east coast trail all within 20 minutes driving from Blue on Water.

They offer a rooftop lot for parking which was safe and secure. The only thing I was unaware of before arrival was the $20/night parking fee.

Staff was great, had dinner in the bar which was delicious! Great stay, very cozy feel in the room and we will definitly be back again sometime.

I was in room 205 and the noise from the bar/restaurant was terrible. Very noisy until 12 midnight when the bar closed. It was a Friday night so this is understandable but it was very loud, and uncomfortable when one has a 4am start to the airport.

Staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Food was very good. Great location; close to many, many bars and restaurants. We checked in late at night and no problems. Someone waited for us to arrive. Had an issue with our mini-fridge but Sullivan had it changed within 10 minutes. Great service.

I loved everything about the accommodation, the location was excellent, it was spotlessly clean, comfortable bed and crisp linens and the facilities were great. Excellent restaurant/pub on site as well.

It would have been great if the room had a safety deposit box to put passports, iPads etc. especially as there is direct access to rooms from the front door.

The room was beautiful, nice linens and shower. The staff were exceptional: friendly, proactive and helpful whether it was answering questions about the area or guiding us through the parking challenge.

Parking was a bit of a challenge, but certainly not a deal breaker. We had to park in a roof top lot and find our way down through a building and down the street to the hotel. The video and directions sent prior to arrival were helpful, but we arrived after the building was locked for the day. The manager was very responsive coming personally to escort us to check-in where we were welcomed warmly. We understand this is a seasonal parking situation and overall they’ve done a good job mitigating it, however, we didn’t know to check in prior to parking to get the key fob to open the door off the parking lot if it was after hours.

The rooms are wonderful. The location is perfect. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. We would definitely stay at Blue on Water again.

I liked the fact we had an outdoor balcony. The heated bathroom floor was a nice touch. The staff were incredible and very responsive.

The chicken and rib bones thrown off the balcony were gross to look at. Checking into the hotel room by taking our luggage into the bar was weird. Finding parking was difficult but the staff were very helpful assisting us.

Sehr geräumige Zimmer, insb. sehr grosszügiges Bad. Insgesamt hübsch eingerichtet und so wie auf den Fotos auf booking.com dargestellt. Freundliches Personal, guter Hausdienst, gutes Essen im darunterliegenden Restaurant. Sehr schnelles Wifi. Die Lage an der Water st (und auch nahe an der George st) war super… dass es auch mal etwas lauter sein kann, scheint mir an der Lage logisch. Insgesamt eine empfehlenswerte Unterkunft! Das Parking ist sehr einfach zu finden (dort hat es reservierte und entsprechend markierte Hotelparkplätze), zudem wird noch der Link auf ein Video verschickt - damit es auch wirklich alle finden! 😉

Das Parking selber machte einen etwas heruntergekommenen Eindruck; oftmals standen Autos und junge Herren auf der Parkterrasse herum… über deren Aufenthaltsgründe dort oben wollen wir mal nicht spekulieren, aber es hinterliess einen gewissen Beigeschmack. In meinem Zimmer hatte es nur ein winziges (Dach-)Fenster; das fehlende Licht und die fehlende Aussicht ist das einzige, was ich am Zimmer bemängeln konnte.
