The property needs a lot of maintenance and cleaning. The skirting around the floor was rotten. The latches on the window from the bathroom were broken. The Air-conditioning unit outside the bathroom window was very noisy. Regrettably, as a tourist from overseas, I didn’t do enough research and it’s not really a location for feeling safe to go walking around at night or down to the shops but yet again that is generally South Africa more my fault than the Hotels. I think it’s a good option for people that are travelling throughout Africa and are used to the sort of location of Int’l tourist. I wouldn’t recommend it.

I was not offered breakfast, in which my booking had. My booking had an iron, it was no there in my room. The receptionist lady was not friendly. Certain plugs and light were no working.

Reviewed Jul 9, 2026The staff were friendly, Precious (Reception), Albert (Maintenance), Sam (Parking), Ayanda (Bar). Unfortunately I don't recall the names of a few of the other staff members we met, but all the staff at the hotel were generally good. Not so much at the in-house Wimpy.
We requested a twin room when making the booking but was given a double and had to ask to be moved. In the 2nd room, The bedside pedestal had a broken leg, resulting in it falling over and a glass breaking. 30 minutes after reporting it, a cleaner came to the room to clean, but there was still pieces of glass all over the floor, which we had to deal with until the next morning when we got to move to a 3rd room. 1st rooom, the tv was not working. 2nd room, the tv had no sound and it had to be replaced. The booking we made included a 'full english breakfast', however instead, we were given vouchers for the Wimpy in the same building, which is by far the worst Wimpy I have ever been to. The menu is very limited, the service is agonizingly slow, and the food is far below the expected standards. The onion rings was actually the crumbs scooped up from the bottom of the deep fryer, chicken schnitzel and burger was drenched in oil, and the half chicken was completely raw inside. Honestly, this Wimpy should just close down.

Reviewed Jun 15, 2026Bayside Hotel has the perfect location in Durban CBD. It was about 300 m from the Comrades start line and about 350 m from a Superspar. We also visited the Wimpy next door that is open 24 hours a day. The Wimpy's service was excellent and the food amazing. The staff at Bayside Hotel were lovely and so helpful. Thank you so much for making our stay so memorable.
