Location to hardknott Pass
The room was spacious and really comfortable The breakfast was excellent - a good selection and perfectly cooked. The dinners were also very good The hotel is near some great walks, and the local bus service connects to lots of buses to other areas in the Lake District
Location.
Breakfast was perfect. Plenty of fresh fruit, juices, yogurt etc and hot drinks available whilst waiting for your Breakfast Order...Service was excellent from the staff.
Great location, friendly caring staff. Lovely room. Plenty of car parking
Liked all of our stay

Great location for walking. Very friendly, helpful staff. Food very good & great selection at breakfast. Room clean & comfortable.
Ideal spot to go walking from
Great setting for walking but most of all staff are amazing
Staff friendly. Food good
Nothing
Everything as expected.
Unpretentious and comfortable. Very efficient and helpful staff. Ample parking for residents and good walks from the hotel itself.
Bumped our heads on the bathroom door in Room 7 (but we know it's a historic building, so what can you do?!?) Breakfast was okay but coffee was not great.
Breakfast was as expected self service for the majority, however cooked breakfast was available if wanted
Needed to walk outside in rain to get from reception to room door. Bathroom had leaking sink and tap making floor unsafe. Needed to manhandle wheelchair down 4 steps to get from reception to bar facilities else walk around outside of hotel
Good location, polite staff with a warm welcome.
No negatives
A tremendous hotel, lovely friendly staff, kind and accommodating with the dog. Food was excellent for both evening meal and breakfast. Lovely location, nice local walks and fabulous scenery, the room was really big, lovely and clean, easy check in and check out process, very efficient, will definitely go back.
Nothing, everything was great.
Fab location, nice rooms, bargain late booking with booking.com
Beautiful location Excellent dinner - the chicken main was superb
Tired fittings Pillows need replacing
Food was excellent in both The Talbot Bar and the hotel
Difficult to open the windows in the room we were in
Location, the building , the room the staff and the food all perfect. Just a great place to stay
There was nothing we didn't like.
Ample parking, good quality well cooked food, value for money and friendly staff for whom nothing was too much trouble. I originally booked for two nights with Booking.com but then booked an extra night as I was enjoying my stay.
There wasn’t anything that spoiled my stay.
Lovely staff and great food
I couldn't say anything bad about the place
Perfect location. The receptionist was lovely and friendly. Food delicious and lovely, plentiful breakfast
Very kind staff, super comfortable
Nothing
The location was excellent. Staff friendly and very hard working to ensure guest were well looked after. Large, clean, comfortable rooms with lots of storage. Excellent cooked to order breakfast- good quality and tasty.
Decoration a little dated and tired.
The hotel is in a lovely location surrounded by stunning scenary
Our room was tiny and totally inadequate for hikers - it was also full of ants and bugs which were actually in the bed - it also had no method of air conditioning at a time when the temperatures were very high - the hotel is tired and in need of major refurbishment- the price of the room was therefore far to high
Breakfast was excellent
Very dated hotel needing renovations very dated bar area had carpet very old
Good location, nice restaurant & bar area. Great food & friendly staff.
Room was dirty with cobwebs on windows, & bugs on ceiling. Asked to change rooms but was fully booked.
Beautiful old building ,very clean basic room.
Needs some instructions on how to operate thr hot water thing in the shower.
Lovely old building in a beautiful setting. Staff were very friendly and helpful, room was very comfortable and a good size. Can't fault it.
The location was fab and the staff were lovely. They were so welcoming, friendly and helpful. Breakfast was fantastic! The rooms could do with being a little more updated, as could the hotel itself. It is a fine hotel and a lot could be done to utilise and modernise each room. However we really enjoyed our stay.
Bit dated. Although this hotel has lots of character and ideal location there are lots of beautiful rooms that could really do with being updated.
Rooms were large and very comfortable. Great spot with nature all around
Nothing
Very friendly staff.
The beds were comfortable
The television didn't work and the bathroom door kept getting stuck
Great staff, very comfortable
The bar shutting early!
The wait staff were friendly to patrons.
The 2 bed mattresses in the Grasmere room were not in the best shape. Replacements are needed. Thank you.
Great location .. very friendly staff .. good clean rooms with view
The bar shut early even though there were 8 of us drinking!
Wunderschöne Lage, Personal sehr freundlich , alle Wünsche wurden beim Frühstück erfüllt
The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. Despite our late arrival just after the kitchen had closed, they graciously reopened it to prepare a meal for us, a gesture we deeply appreciated after a ten-hour drive. Additionally, the hotel is situated in a truly beautiful location. Plenty of parking spots available to park your car too.
All the staff friendly, great location, lovely breakfast. The rooms very basic but comfortable which is all we want after a long day walking
Good location and very good breakfast.
Our room was a little smaller than we would’ve liked, but that’s the only thing.
A comfortable and friendly hotel in a great location. Lots of walks from the door and Chesters on the doorstep. The bar is one of the best places to have a drink on a sunny summer evening. Very clean room. Lovely and quiet. Great breakfast and excellent price.
Perfect option for the price.Hotel decorated according to price bracket.
We opted for the superior room for the extra space and it was great. The extra large bed was very comfortable. The breakfast choice was very satisfactory too with a slice sausage for our little dog Rolo, which was very much appreciated. We had a meal on the Saturday evening which was delicious.
Couldn't fault it.
Excellent hotel 2nd time visiting had a superior double room and it was excellent
Nothing

Great location, pet friendly
Location, yummy breakfast and friendly staff
Parking a bit limited
Good location, nice food, some staff were lovely
Room could’ve been cleaned better, receptionist wasn’t very engaging (too busy on his mobile phone)
Great location for getting to coniston to see the K7 bluebird Friendly staff. Lovely food. Drinks. Quiet at night.
Parking little tight but managed to get parked both nights.
Amazing location, lovely staff, good sized rooms.
Bit tired.
Location is great. Staff are fabulous and it’s always a favourite when walking in the area.
Nice location
Was a bit dated
The Hotel was nice as was the attached bar. We didn't spend a lot of time there to give a full review. Rooms were clean and well presented. The bed was unexpectedly comfortable. There was a lovely smart TV in the room. Breakfast was fine, quick and friendly service, and they even gave us a sausage for the dog.
There was the most annoying floorboard in the bathroom, it was so loud I was worried we would disturb the room next door. The lighting in the room and mirror placement made it difficult to apply make up in the right light when the bathroom was in use. The room we had breakfast in didn't allow dogs in, which is fine, but there wasn't an alternative (other than the benches outdoors, but it was cold and raining). We left our dog in the room which he wasn't happy with (first time away from home) and so it would have been nice to have an option to bring him. Yes we could have taken it in turns to stay with him, so there was a way around it, but an alternative would have been helping, especially with it being a dog friendly hotel.
Good welcome and a well appointed room.
All good, a little noise from outside at night possibly from refrigeration.
Comfortable with friendly staff and good food
Nothing
In a beautiful location, very friendly and personal rather than corporate
Nothing to dislike
We were familiar with this hotel as we used to have a static on Skelwith Fold. Had a drink in the Talbot Bar many times. Love the location with access to many local places. Free car parking and on a bus route if needed. Nice staff at check in and in the dining room. Fabulous breakfast. Big comfy bed. Bath sheets not towels a nice touch.
Minor negative was no info in the room eg WiFi code, local places of interest, example menus. Also the hotel bar shuts before 10pm so no nightcap for us 🙁
Breakfast and dinner
I'm afraid I didn't realise you had to get TWO buses to the hotel. I probably wouldn't have booked the hotel otherwise. So the first bus driver told us we would have to get another bus from Ambleside to the hotel. We got a taxi instead and the next day too. Not convenient for the Coast to Coast.
Really tasty
Friendly staff. Very good breakfast and good dinner.
Not all lights working in bedroom at time of visit. Noisy plumbing.
The staff were exceptional- the help & friendliness was second to none & what makes the hotel amazing. Spotlessly clean Breakfast was amazing Great evening menu
A little dated but would never stop us coming back
Staff were amazing. Room was very comfortable with comfy beds. Lots of coffee, tea and hot chocolate provided. The breakfast was nice with a good selection.
The shower pressure was very poor and it took some fine tuning to not be freezing cold or scolding.
The staff were so friendly and helpful, the place was cosy with a lovely atmosphere, the food was fab , we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be back
The staff where very nice .nice room good breakfast.recommend the smoke haddock.location was good bus stops outside.many thanks Jan and Phil from the Wirral.😄
I minor fault the shower had no water pressure and water was tepured other wise every thing was brilliant.
Location
Needs repairs and upkeep and decorating
Location, comfy spacious room, great breakfast. Genuinely dog-friendly.
Great position
Ideal location
The food and dinning room. The large bar. Friendly staff. The garden.
The room. Bed uncomfortable. Plumbing a bit iffy, shower not hot. Hot water tap on hand basin was very slow to produce hot water. 20 centimetre cobweb hanging off the ceiling next to the bathroom. The tv did not work properly, could not watch news channels.
Great location and setting, very good value and friendly staff.
Finish of rooms getting a little tired and dated.
Good location, room was nice and clean very spacious, breakfast was very good served nice and hot good choice
Would of liked information in room regarding TV instructions ( it was difficult to navigate channels) would of liked a menu in room for choice of room service and restaurant timings
Lovely room, great location for access to the Cumbrian Way. Fab breakfast and good evening menu.
L’hôtel est très bien situé pour faire de la randonnée. La réceptionniste était très accueillante. Nous avons eu une belle chambre avec nos chiens, nous étions très content. Le petit déjeuner était délicieux.
Rien
The location of the hotel is absolutely amazing. The staff were polite and helpful
The hotel decor was extremely dated and the room was not particularly clean. The TV didn't work. The shower was either freezing cold or red hot, there was no in-between. We didn't have a meal but breakfast was a disgrace. Instead of a breakfast my wife and I requested a bacon sandwich. We received 2 rashers in 2 slices of plain white bread.
Location and value for money. Good for solo traveller
Nothing that I did not like
Location
In need of a refurbishment Breakfast was quite poor
Lovely peaceful location, fantastic staff, lovely food and bar. Would definitely recommend.
The roads were scary in places, especially when you met a bus or lorry.
