I will wax lyrical about this beautiful hotel for months to come! Everything was exceptional. I would have gladly paid double for my gorgeous room. The food is first class. Take my advice, and use this hotel as a base if you have a car. Don't pay the expensive room rates for Portpatrick for a sub standard hotel, when you can have this luxury nearby.
Everything was wonderful. The young lady with the dark hair in the restaurant deserves an extra compliment. She was so warm and friendly and professional, which is just the icing on the cake for me as a sole traveller.
Did not have breakfast or dinner as restaurant was closed. But appreciated David's helpful recommendations. Room was comfortable and well equipped. We especially loved the beautiful soft water!
A lot of stairs!
Clean and comfortable, very friendly and helpful owners and staff, meals in the restaurant were excellent and great value, beautifully decorated
Nothing, loved it all
Breakfast not included
A little noisy untill the bar closed
The staff where very professional and friendly. We had a super clean and modern room. Had and evening meal here and the food was of a very high standard and very tasty. It was amazing value too. Thank you so much for a great stay.
Nothing to not like
Perfect location and all the staff were very friendly and helpful
Only had two nights and could have done with a few more days
Clean, comfortable, very good value. Great location for the ferries, and very helpful staff.
Room on third floor, no lift. Not really a problem though as hotel staff carried our bags up for us.
Lovely welcome from host , very clean appt , a little noisy outside , just one night , great for getting an early ferry

Andrea world class cleaning
This hotel was simply fabulous . I was very impressed with the cleanliness and size if room. Very comfortable bed. Shannon and staff were so welcoming and helpful. The food was delicious and I'm coming back to taste more puddings Thank you 😊
The room was clean , spacious and nicely decorated, good value for the cost . Had a very nice beer garden too
Not that we didnt like it , but the music in the small bar was very loud for us. We sat in the beer garden
A very warm welcome. Lovely room. Spotlessly clean. Very quiet.
Staff were brilliant. Room was comfortable and all amenities were provided. This was ideal for us getting the ferry the next day.
We arrived late in the evening so was somewhat difficult to gain access. The phone number is on the side of the building however so if you end up in a similar situation just phone that.
We just stayed for one night and had everything we needed. All the staff we met were very kind and welcoming!
Everything they are very kind and so welcoming nice room good hospitality
Nothing everything was perfect
Great room above the pub. Landlord(s) were absolutely brilliant and welcoming. The rooms are clean and spacious. There are enough place to eat nearby (Pub restaurant only open on certain days in the week, check up front).
Very central to Stranraer so easy to walk around town, rooms were immaculate and clean, nice decor etc very modern,
Nothing really, we were there when the weather was very warm so room was quite warm at night but this is not anything the hotel could have done to prevent we slept with windows open.
Excellent staff , very friendly and helpfull, great atmosphere , very clean , the food in the restaurant amazing , large portions ,value for money, would highly recommend this hotel !
As above
Recently modernized. Very good value for money.
Great value for money. The staff are very friendly and welcoming too. The only thing that could make this even better, is if they did breakfast😁
Derek the owner met us on arrival, and could not be more welcoming. My son has additional needs and he and his staff went above and beyond to do everything and anything to help make our stay comfortable. I highly recommend if staying going to the Royal Hotel's restaurant. The food and presentation of the food was superb. An excellent menu and everything was delicious. One of the best meals we had on our trip to Scotland. The rooms were so comfortable and we both slept excellently. It was the perfect location for getting in only few minutes to our ferry. Highly recommend
Comfy, very convenient for the ferry, owner was super friendly and helpful, easy check in/out, could park really close by
Bit of noise from the road but that’s to be expected
Managed to check us in early as we were wedding guests which allowed us plenty time to get freshened up and ready after travelling. Perfect location, spotless and lovely staff - will recommend to all friends/family and will definitely be back. Thank you!
On check-in I was made very welcome by the owner Janet. She couldn’t have done enough for me. I found the hotel exceptionally clean, my bedroom was really nice and the bed very comfortable and cosy. I would certainly recommend this hotel.
I couldn’t leave my window open due to traffic noise but it wasn’t really a major issue and bearing in mind where the hotel is situated, it’s not something that can be changed.
Amazing
Lovely stay at a friendly, clean and comfortable hotel. Food was lovely. Excellent for an overnight before catching the Ferry.
Nothing. Everything was excellent.
Central location. Room was clean, fresh and has everything we could need. Staff were very friendly snd helpful.
Nothing
Central handy location, great for ferry, nice restaurant for evening meal, good motorbike parking.
Owner was very friendly and helpful, advised we could bring food back and sit in his bar to consume if we wanted. parking was nearby and free in the area
It was all good 👍
The staff were proper friendly. Made you feel really welcome. Couldn’t do enough for you.
No Parking but I knew this before I booked. So nothing really. It was great.
great bar and restaurant fabulous owner (Janet) and staff
not staying longer..........
All good and very clean
Clean, friendly staff
Parking, not the hotels fault though
Great bar and garden areas to relax in.
Lovely friendly staff. Very clean comfortable
I liked the very central location and the very friendly staff. The room was very modern and very clean. There was a restaurant to have your evening meal. There was no breakfast available but in my case it did not matter.
The room was on the second floor and no lift. It was okay as did not have much luggage but had I had there would have been a lot of steps.
Room nice and clean, food was lovely so was the staff
No parking, had to try an park on main street which was difficult as everywhere had double yellow lines. Also did not do breakfast.
The staff member who greeted me on arrival at thr pub was friendly. The room was clean and comfortable. Easy to find in the middle of Stranraer.
I can't say I enjoyed my stay, for a few reasons. There was a heat wave, and no fan or air conditioning in the room. It was unbearably hot. I know there are very rarely heat waves in Scotland, but would suggest the hotel purchases some fans! The other things I didn't enjoy were the location, in terms of having to enter and check in through a quite depressing pub. As it was a hot day, people were quite drunk and lary when I arrived to check in. Finally, a smaller thing but the shower was so small it was quite hard to not nudge the tap when you turned around. And nobody cleaned and replaced the towels, which I would really have benefitted from.
The room was bright & airy. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom had a nice clean shower.
The seagulls were a nuisance.
A little gem of a place! Super staff too!!
Handy for everything

Very clean and very friendly and helpful staff
Nothing to say
Spacious rooms in a great location, with restaurants, grocery stores and public transport just a short walk away. The beds were comfortable, everything was spotless, and the staff were incredibly friendly!
There was some street traffic noise, but it quieted down considerably after 11 p.m.
I slept real good, that is the main thing. Also the food at the restaurant was very good. It was very conveniant to get a bus from there to the ferry.
Very clean tidy hotel. Great value for money. Comfortable nights sleep. What more could you ask for. Will definitely be back.
The staff were great, both for the hotel and the restaurant. Highly recommend making a reservation for dinner, the food was great and the staff were super friendly. The room was recently renovated and spacious with a spacious ensuite. Check-In was easy and swift. Great location and value for money if you are catching the ferry.
Parking was on-street, we found a spot without issues but mindful it could be harder during busy times.
Everything about the stay was lovely no faults with location staff and cleanliness
The shower was the only down side with not a lot of pressure
Clean tidy, good bar , great meal. Kept informed of all available.
I had trouble walking and didn’t earlier there was 4 flights of stairs. That was my fault not Royal.
Everything was perfect Very clean and comfortable
Nothing
What a fantastic little find, right on the centre of Stranraer, although not noisy, despite Scotland playing a World Cup game that night with kick off at 11pm. The rooms (5 of them) are on the second floor of the building and have clearly recently been renovated to a high standard. Fresh and modern, spotlessly clean. The room was a good size too as was the shower room. We were welcomed to the property by a lovely friendly young girl who gave us tips on where to find something to eat as, unfortunately, on the evening of our arrival there was a wedding party going on in the restaurant. Being in the centre of town, it was easy for us to find something to eat: we had a Chinese take away from the restaurant just on the opposite side of the road.
We drove around a few times to find the best place to park as close by all the parking spots are restricted. We did easily find a parking ( unrestricted) spot opposite Morrisons car park entrance but it was about a 4 mins walk to the hotel. Not a problem for us as we’d packed light so only had a bag to carry, but could be an issue if you had lots of luggage you needed to bring to the hotel ( coupled with the fact the rooms are on the second floor and there’s no lift)
We stayed overnight for an early morning ferry crossing to Ireland. Royal Hotel is one of,if not the cleanest hotels, we’ve stayed in worldwide. Excellent staff, facilities. Everything you would need for a stopover.
Nothing.
The view of the sea from our window was lovely….the tea/coffee facilities were good & we enjoyed them quite often :)
The shower had very poor pressure which was disappointing!!
Brilliant restaurant, excellent food, helpful and very pleasant staff. Nicely appointrd room, very clean and comfortable.
Quite difficult to find,despite directions.
Great location close to the ferry port. Really lovely friendly staff and clean room with everything you could need.
No lift
great hosts. nice clean room good location
bar shut too early
Sehr zuvorkommendes Personal
Clean room with first class decor, really nice bathroom and a comfortable bed Staff were friendly and helpful
Nothing to dislike
Dat je achteraf moest reserveren om de motors veilig op het terrein te stallen. Niet zien staan op de site
Wonderful staff, clean rooms, cotton sheets, comfy mattress, black put blinds
It did get noisy from the bar two floors down on Saturday night
The on site restaurant was very good in both food and service
Nothing
The staff were very helpful and waited for us when we got delayed in arriving after hours.
Our room was absolutely gorgeous - with really good views of the town centre. Our room had a huge walk in shower which was fabulous and we found our stay very comfortable.
Friendly staff, clean and comfortable accommodation loo
Lovely room with super comfy beds. Shug and all the staff were amazingly friendly and accommodating. Dinner in the restaurant was amazing. High end dining at a very reasonable price.
Lack of nearby parking. Lots of stairs but staff helped with luggage.
We had dinner and it was exceptionally good the staff where the friendliest we have came across in a long time
Everything was perfect
An absolute gem of a budget stay! The hotel didn't even advertise the free services of their tour guide, Lee Rutherford. I don't know how much you pay him, Royal, but he's worth every penny. Glad that you enjoyed the beer I gave you, Lee. 🤗 Andy S&P Brewery
Having to leave at 0600. The pic shows the view from our room just before we left for the Cairnryan ferry at 0600
Easy access to local facilities. Secure motorbike parking. Great accommodation and the staff/owner are great.
Nothing
Room was large and well equiped on suite.
Bike parking could have been better organised. Lack of communication on my part I suppose. However all good.
Comfort. Valuw. Location.
Loose toilet seat.
Lovely clean, bright and comfortable bedroom and bathroom and spent time people watching from the 2 large window seats.. Ate in the dining room and the food was excellent.
The bed though comfortable was quite high for me at 5'3" Our stay was on a busy Saturday and unfortunately you could hear the outside noise till the wee hours. For those travelling by car please make sure to take care on the one way system.
The staff and the locals make what is already an excellent establishment even better and the little touches just make the difference
No private parking but there are public parking facilities near by
Very nice room, clean, friendly staff and nice location. Excellent value for money.
Very accommodating and helpful. Everything clean and fresh for a one-night stopover. Couldn’t have been more welcoming when we arrived off the ferry at 10.15 on Sunday night. Breakfast at Morrisons round the corner. Good car parking locally.
Quite emphatic about 8pm check-in deadline on Sunday night. A warning that rooms are up two flights of stairs would be helpful. No breakfast. Location in narrow streets in old part of town.
Central location and friendly staff
Double bed was small and uncomfortable. Snoring from next door was noisy.
great location for the ferry. Enjoyed my stay, the owners were super helpful with everything. Everything was really clean and a comfy bed. Would gladly stay again.
Super clean and friendly helpful staff
The shower power wasnt the strongest
Very clean
The hotel is spotless and located in the centre of town. No parking at the hotel but there is free parking nearby.
There is no lift so folk with mobility problems may struggle.
The staff were awesome, helpful, kind. We had our best meal of our trip in the restaurant on site. The meal and service were great. The rooms were clean and comfortable.
A little more water pressure in the shower would be nice.
Friendly welcome. No evening meal available but we were helped to find a good alternative.
Bed too small for us.
A very clean, newly refurbished large room. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Lack of packing on site but we knew this before we went. No lift s lots of steepish stairs to climb.
Lovely room with big enough bathroom. Had dinner and it was lovely.
Great location, friendly staff, really nice stay.
Everything was grand.
Staff been helpful.
