Comfortable beds, clean bathroom. We were in a room over looking the high street, which had a market outside in the morning. Ear plugs were supplied, which didnt fill me with confidence but I didnt need them.
Could do with updating.
Location was fantastic. Clean room. Comfortable beds. Good size rooms. Good food. Good price. Cleaning staff helpful. Friendly bar staff. Lovely hotel and great court yard space. Ear plugs provided just in case of busy noise. Nice touch.
Room not cleaned on second day. Bar guy that evening did help out though with fresh towels and coffee replenishment so all ok. He was very good. Reception team could have been more attentive. Waved us on into the bar while we only wanted to check in. Just assumed without asking. Had to wait with no interaction while doing admin. Reception team did not greet in the morning with a cheery hello. Poor customer service from them, could of been better. Rooms pleasant but wish the shower gels were in complementary bottles or at least nice bottle instead of the hand wash dispensers you see in public bathrooms.
Staff were very friendly, room was large and clean.
Room quite basic, no tea only coffee in room. Some noise from road.
Comfortable and Great Food
Nothing
A lovely quaint hotel
All good
Friendly staff, great location, comfortable bed, nice & clean
Uneven floors & stairs typical of an older property
Location
Rooms very basic, lot of noise from corridors and banging doors . Light and fan not working in bathroom. Wondered why there were ear plugs in the room..
First day breakfast was a buffet style, second morning food cooked to order which was a lot fresher and hotter.staff were brilliant and attentive. This a personal thing and nothing to do with the excellent hotel but we sleep with the windows open and we where awoken by the market sellers setting up at 5am
Clean and tidy but a bit dated
Bit dated
The hotel is very central for exploring the North Riding. The restaurant was excellent value and food was delicious. We found the hotel staff were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We shall certainly stay here again on our next visit to Northallerton.
If you’re at the front of the hotel you do get a little noise from traffic.
Great location and free parking/car park behind the hotel. Main bar was nice. Receptionist was helpful.
Rooms were very old fashioned - saggy old bed and the whole place was a little faulty towers like - long dark corridors, keys to get in rooms and very out dated, basic rooms and bathrooms. You wouldn’t stay here for a ‘nice’ break - it was all very ‘functional’ and very ‘no frills’.
Simple booking in procedure with friendly, welcoming reception staff.
Nice location, clean and the staff were friendly
We were not told there were workmen working right outside our window so it was a shock when we opened our curtains We asked for a room nearest the ground due to mobility issues but our room was one of the furthest away, not sure if this was due to the hotel being full or the message just got lost.
All of it as always a beautiful old hotel with lovely staff.
There wasnt anythig we didnt like.
Location couldn't have been better for our event. Literally through a gap in the wall.
The window didn't open and despite a fan been provided the heat was unbearable.
Location and parking was good. In the centre of town with bars and restaurants close by.
Nothing g to say here.
Free parking right behind the hotel Easy access to the town out the front door, and you're there Abd the bar was well stocked
Can't say there was anything we didn't like . Old hotel and a bit of a maze finding your room . Once you get there, it's got everything you need One thing that's come to mind is that the shower was a little slow, so you have to move close to the wall to get.
Staff were so helpful an polite
Great location and friendly helpful receptionist as always. A lovely hotel overall. Thank you
Location
Needs a refurb
Central location, clean with attentive staff
The sash window in the bathroom could not be opened. The sash window in the bedroom was very heavy to open a lady would find it impossible to. The sign to the car park does not say Golden Lion which makes it difficult to spot.
We went to see the Haley Sisters playing at the hotel on Sunday night. We live in Cumbria so needed to stay over. Had a lovely evening with family and their friends, the Haley's were brilliant as ever, the staff were friendly and helpful. We had a nice breakfast did a little shopping in Northallerton then came home via the Dales, Ribble Head Viaduct and White Scar Cave.
A landlord from a pub in the town and friends talking loudly when they should have been listening, I think it is called giving a bit of order, a quiet word with the bar man sorted that, well done him.
Access to the rooms was a challenge. Very steep and shallow stairs-so take if you have mobility issues
Central location and cleanliness Very helpful and friendly staff
Dated decor and furniture in the bedroom and the bathroom
only that it was in city centrte
Unfortunately, my experience at Golden Lion Hotel Northallerton was quite disappointing, especially considering the price we paid. Firstly, the room was far too small for the price, and there were barely any basic amenities provided. There was no complimentary drinking water and no tea or coffee sachets in the room, which I would normally expect as a basic standard in a hotel at this price point. The pedestal fan provided in the room was extremely noisy, which made it difficult to have a comfortable and peaceful night’s sleep. Another issue was the breakfast information. When I arrived, i was told that breakfast was not included in our booking and were informed that breakfast is only included when guests book the room directly upon arrival. This was very confusing and did not make much sense, particularly if the same room and booking conditions are being offered differently depending on how the reservation is made. Overall, I feel the price was unreasonable for the size of the room, the lack of basic amenities and the overall experience. Unfortunately, I would not consider this hotel good value for money and would expect much better facilities and service for the price.
Central Location on the High Street, good for shops and services like bus/ train. Train Station only a 15min walk. Bar / Food was ideal with plenty to choose from.
Rooms were sweating. Old building with likely an older style heating system would be braw and cosy in winter, not good for a heatwave. Fan was provided in the room and high street wad quiet enough to have the windows open through the night.
Great location and parking. Breakfast was ok on both days. Room clean and comfortable. Staff were lovely and friendly.
My only issue is the lack of handrails on the upper stairs going to Room 21. I’ve has a hip replacement and I’m currently waiting for the other knee to be done.
Staff friendly, parking available
Very noisy 🙄, wondered why earplugs were supplied.
Very central
Noise from the market
We have stayed many times here and always love it
Nothing
The staff were all very friendly and accommodating. The food was excellent. The location is great for getting around the lovely countryside in North Yorkshire
Only the pillows, too thin and uncomfortable.
Ideal location, yes its old and some areas need attention but for us it was very charming as we like old and original. Bar was excellent, staff really friendly, breakfast was huge. Beds really comfy our room looked over the main street had no problem with noise through the night also market day following morning minimal noise from traders setting up. Will definitely stay again on our next visit.

Very clean hotel and room, everything we needed, staff very helpful, would stay there for longer next time
Nothing
Very central, great price, it was a very hot day so we had a fan in the room and had a large window to open thankfully. Staff pleasant and helpful. Would stay again.
Lots of stairs to get to the room, not a criticism, just was a bit of a faff with the cases.
Just wanted to add to my other review that Room 10, on the 'second' floor, was actually 38 steps in total. Almost three normal internal flights of stairs.
The bedroom and bathroom are both large. The beds are comfortable and it was very quiet during the night. Slept well. Morning breakfast was great, and there was plenty of choice.
Shower was poor
Location and cleanliness
Totally disinterested and robotic receptionist on arrival. Shoebox size room and bed. No hot water on showering in morning following a night of very loud music which we weren't forewarned of. Totally overpriced and unfortunately I paid earlier than I had to or there would of been discussion over payment. A never to be repeated experience
Great place very good value for money
Gorgeous character, the staff were very welcoming, good standards of service and constantly clearing and cleaning. Food and choice on menu was fab. Room was clean, comfortable, included iron, ironing board and hair dryer, kettle, coffee, milk and sugar provided. You are right in the centre of the high street with plenty of shops, pubs and restaurants. Only a 15 minute walk to train station.
All good
Nice buffet breakfast
Great location, good quality rooms, very clean and functional. Good value for money. Nice bar and restaurant.
If you want breakfast, get in there early. Breakfast was advertised as being up to 9am, however it seemed that the food ran out by around 8:30am and there was a reluctance to produce any more. Also, don't expect to be able to get late drinks as the bar shuts early with no resident's facilities
The location and the staff were first class
Everything was excellent
Friendly welcome and great central location with parking
Lovely hotel easy parking great location nice food
Nothing
Proper pub, cosy room. Great location
Location is perfect, centre of town, nice little courtyard and large bar area. Very friendly helpful staff - Zoe in particular goes out of her way to make you feel welcome
No air conditioning and the window didn’t open in our room. Large fan provided but it did get very hot. Stairs are very steep, and plentiful
Location - on the high street
Our first impression wasn’t great. The car park was extremely busy, with no dedicated spaces for hotel guests, making it difficult to find anywhere to park. It also didn’t help that some cars were poorly parked, reducing the number of available spaces. We were allocated a front-facing room, and it quickly became clear why the hotel provides earplugs. We had the window open due to the warm weather, but were woken at around 6am by the market being set up outside. The room itself was on a noticeable slope, which felt particularly unsafe in the bathroom. There was a warning on the door about the step as you entered, but nothing mentioning the sloping floor. Breakfast was disappointing. The hot water for drinks was only lukewarm, and the black pudding was rock hard. The sausages, however, were very nice. The breakfast service also felt quite chaotic, with staff appearing rushed and disorganised. Although breakfast didn’t begin until 8am, we were told we couldn’t wait in the bar and were asked to wait elsewhere. During our stay, we also found there were only two power sockets, both located behind the TV. When we asked for an extension lead, we were initially offered a different room, but it was further away and directly above the function room, where the noise was even louder. We chose to stay where we were, and to the hotel’s credit, they did provide an extension lead. When checking out, I explained the issues we’d experienced. The staff member seemed surprised and said they had never received complaints about these things before, which I found difficult to believe given our experience. Overall, the hotel feels dated and in need of improvement. After a two-night stay, we came home exhausted due to the lack of sleep and discomfort. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t stay here again, and for almost £200, it was one of the most disappointing hotel stays I’ve had.
Location. Lovely welcome given from reception staff, bar staff friendly, lady on breakfast duty very attentive and informative.
Difficult to get the temperature right on the shower.
Staff friendly couldn't do enough for you food excellent and reasonabley priced would definitely stay again
The time we were there went to quick
It all went well. The room was a good size and comfortable. The food was excellent and ALL the staff were helpful with a 'nothing is too much trouble' attitude which was delivered with a smile.

Lovely decor and friendly staff
Charming hotel with friendly and helpful staff. Beautifull recently renovated bathroom and large bedroom with ample power outlets spaced well around the room.
The entire experience could have been improved with a better mattress.
Great location, good parking and the staff are lovely.
Nothing really?
Great location, staff were super friendly ,lunch was lovely.
Room was very warm, but area was experiancing high temps there was a fan.
We visit this hotel once a year. Sunday night is an amazing evening there is a band great atmosphere. Food is good and the staff can't do enough for you. Ideally situated in the high street handy for shops, pubs and restaurants
Some of the bathroom fittings are difficult to use. Ideally certain areas could do with a full refurbishment such as bathrooms etc.
Friendly staff
All good
Beautiful room, comfy bed, great location. Lovely staff.
Comfortable room Very good breakfast Free parking Very good food in the restaurant.
Everything i have sayed a few times when down visiting family.
The rooms food and location is perfect for me.
Nothing in particular
On arrival I was given keys to a pokey room that had not been made up. The barman sorted it out eventually once he had gained access to reception . I was given another room. He was pleasant and helpful and offered a complimentary beverage while I waited. He was having to deal with someone else’s error.
Didn't eat at all at the Hotel. Location is perfect being in the middle of the High Street. Reception and check out handled by Laura who couldn't have been more helpful nor more fun. Receptionist on Saturday was just about the opposite.
Our room was right at the top which meant a lot of steps and having to avoid low ceilings. The recent heatwave had obviously made the room very stuffy and we had to run the fan for the whole time we were there.
Hotel is lovely, very old but fab character...room nice and comfy bed..we will certainly be returning in the near future.
Nothing
Our room needs a better shower. Water flow not strong enough. Only 2 tea bags in complimentary offering which isn’t enough for when two people are staying in the ten room.
Great location friendly staff
Very old fashioned no usb ports air conditioning dated decor
The young man (with pen behind his ear) in the bar area was friendly and good at his job. My evening meal was very enjoyable - sizzler with chicken. Great location.
USB in room doesn't work. No toiletries, bathroom needs updating especially the floor, breakfast poor - no pastries, cooked items look like been there a long time, no oat milk - I was told I should have requested before arrival, food and drink areas at breakfast not stocked - no glasses, one cup, no clean spoons, no plates, no fruit tea and bowl of fresh fruit very small and not very well presented - think one member of staff not enough at breakfast - 9.10am when I visited. Receptionist on evening I arrived was ok but in the morning I got the feeling, she was too busy to speak or answer my questions and the fact that when she was seated all I could see were here eyes and top of her head didn't help at all.
Friendly staff..a great room in an excellent location
Didn't have breakfast but did use the bar and lounge and had an evening meal. Thankfully a fan in the room as requested as temperature was 30 deg!
Noise at night from people in the room above us which was a shame though not the fault of the hotel.
Everything-the staff especially
Didnt stay long enough
Location. Clean. And exceptional staff especially Laura at front desk!!!
Nothing at all. The shower could have been better a bit higher!!
Friendly
Wing mirror on my car got broken off in car park
Lovely staff. Lovely room, clean, spacious and good facilities, central location.
Central location, good parking, reception changed our room with no fuss when I wanted a window that opened.
Rooms are dated and the bed a little lumpy
Great location. Friendly staff and a clean and comfortable room.
Very little.
Very helpful staff Great location on the high street
A very quirky old coaching inn on Northallerton high street. A few different lounges, bars and restaurant. Very good breakfast. Free parking.
Nothing.
Great central Northallerton location
Booked this for my mum and dad, they enjoyed their stay, but unfortunately when they moved a chair to watch the Northallerton 10k race from their window, they found a dirty item of clothing behind it and the manager wouldn't accept that the room wasn't as cleaned as it could/should be. Shame as a good stay otherwise.
Nice room, good restaurant, fine beer
Location was great Did not book breakfast
Bed was quite hard and uncomfortable Shower was overhead mixer … difficult to get a comfortable temperature and very difficult to turn off
Brilliant hotel , great staff everyone very helpful. Will definitely be coming back . Sue
Very helpful & friendly reception staff. Comfy room.
Could have done with info prior to arrival regarding details of parking area.
Sunday roast lovely as allways. Entertainment on the night . Lovely breakfast. Staff allways lovely.
I asked for 1st floor room but didn't get one we were on the 2nd floor with 5 flights of stairs . I have arthritis and it was a struggle to get up to the 2nd floor
I loved everything thing about this beautiful hotel, really friendly and helpful staff. Old building retaining it's authentic feeling. Food was excellent 👌 location was perfect for our visit and we were lucky enough to experience market day on the high street 😀
Staff amazing and friendly and helpful. Request for easy access is impossible in this hotel but we sorted it
I was very impressed by the staff. All of whom I met were friendly and helpful. I had dinner on my first night in the restaurant. The choice on the menu was very comprehensive and my meal was delicious with a very generous portion. My room was comfortable and I slept well. There was a good selection at breakfast of both hot and cold food.
Quick check in, easy parking, great location, excellent food and service
On the whole, clean enough but could have written my name in the dust on the kettle!
Comfortable and clean and conveniently situated for our needs.
Quite a few stairs without handrails which I struggled with after having a replacement knee fairly recently. Also, quite a steep step to get into the bathroom with no handrail.
Staff were so friendly, and did everything they could to sort me a taxi (which is a nightmare in the area). Ended up sorting it out myself but the effort was much appreciated.
Decent breakfast, enough choice. Clean room, good shower and plenty of hot water.
Everything was ok.
Location, Free Parking. Surprisingly the bed was Comfortable! Couldn’t hear any noise from the Street Market; or the setting up of it.
Staff Attitude was Poor! Extremely Dated (but I am Okay with that!). Our toilet was in a very poor state of repair!! The Commode was at quite an Angle!! The toilet floor was Not Even. Everything just covered up to look okay!! It was EXTREMELY HOT in the Bedroom! Windows had Restrictors; so could hardly open them! We could hear the noise of some Motor coming on from time to time; which was Loud!! No Lift! We Struggled taking our Large Suitcases up the stairs from a very long road trip! Had to pay for a family room (for 2 people) in order to get a King Size bed!

Tony here from galway ireland, the hotel staff lovely and helpful and brilliant breakfast as well
No faults
The hotel was well located in the middle of town. The staff were friendly and parking was provided. We had booked room only but breakfast is available extra cost there are also many cafe's and restaurants around. Beds were comfortable room is basic but clean.
The decor is a little tired. Our room shower was fixed and quite low so my partner struggled a little as he is 6ft. However we managed. The price was comparable to the other rooms of the same class in the area and we would stay again.
Bed. Comfy Room clean Small fan in room (weather very hot while there)
Lack of attention to detail of cleanliness eg bottom of mirror in bathroom had ? water splash area. Cheap plastic container in bedroom with tatty note stuck on it saying contains tea/coffee bits. No bedside lamps Breakfast tea coffee area scruffy, no cups, plastic container of Nescafe coffee Table mats looked old and chipped.
Not the hotels fault but the other guests were so loud and at a very unsociable hour. Didnt get yo sleep till after 4am
