Reviewed Apr 6, 2026Right next to Arthur’s Pass Cafe so if we needed a quick bite and we’re too lazy to cook, it’s just a few strides over. Every part of the place is warm and cozy and the kitchen doesn’t smell (unlike many shared kitchens across the South Island).
Washer and dryer require coins so do keep cash at hand because there is no manned reception. Or you can pop over next door to the cafe to get change. There is limited parking space so check-in as early as you can.

The shower needed a good scrub and clean in the corners and on ceiling. 2 toilets ran out of toilet paper. Was otherwise clean.

Les mots hargneux des proprio dans la cuisine concernant le vol de nourriture , notre chambre, sûrement anciennement la réception que tout le monde prenait pour la réception et regardait dedans avant de se détourner. Le manque d'humains dans l accueil : suit les instructions et débrouille toi.

Reviewed Mar 30, 2026It was very easy find in the centre of Arthur’s Pass & Tash’s self checkin was very straightforward. The room was comfortable & the bathroom was clean & convenient. Best of all were the well equipped kitchen & the common areas.
It was noisy! The trucks thundered up & down all night. The walls seemed to be thin & the lively conversations of people in the surrounding rooms got rather annoying, especially at 11.30pm. The place could do with some “Please be considerate & keep the noise down after 10pm” signs.

Reviewed Mar 30, 2026I had a really nice stay at mountain house. It’s located right in the centre of Arthur’s pass with easy access to all the good walks. The hostel is clean and the kitchen is well equipped.
The door to my room didn’t close well meaning it was open to the common area and my things were to not secure. However I’ve never worried much about theft in New Zealand so this is only a small point.

Reviewed Mar 11, 2026Location is perfect. I had a very short stay here, but I could walk to the main walks and waterfalls. The view from the upstairs lounge is amazing.
I liked everything. The spiral staircase is a bit small to carry bags, but you can figure it out or pay a little more and stay in one of the ground floor rooms.

It is the only hostel so they can do whatever. No hospitality at all. Check in is at 14, I was not allowed to store my yogurt in the fridge at 12:15. Check out is at 10. The road was closed because of an event (coast to coast) but I was not allowed to stay at 11:15. Strange thing is that they do let strangers that were not guests use the bathroom and cook in the kitchen.. The sheets had blood stains!

Vibe was off, the old reception area had been blocked off and was full of laundry bags visible from the street. A bad look and really messed with the flow of the building.
