Reviewed Sep 17, 2026It was perfectly located to get to walks and the 2 local food places and handy to the train station if thats what your doing. It was good value for money. Place was nice and warm, heated towel rail was a nice touch and was a spacious area with a decently prepped kitchen to be able to prepare food but be pre warned to bring your groceries. We appreciated the message with the heads up with the lack of groceries and prices available in advance. Super easy self check in. Would happily stay here again and recommend for others.
Beds wasn't the most comfortable and was moving/banging the wall when we moved around a bit. Wasnt the worst bed I have slept in bed and I would still do it again but wouldnt want to for any length of time, a night was fine. You can see the light from the shop through the curtain in the room we were in, it wasnt super bright, I just prefer total darkness to sleep personally.

Reviewed Jun 3, 2026Right in the middle of the Village, great location. Room was spacious and ensuite was nice. Communal kitchen had everything we needed. People tended to stay only 1 night or so and were out during the day so was very quiet.
Didn't quite realise the room was off the communal kitchen, was fine but just good to know. We were really hot in our room which I guess is a good problem!

I hadn’t realised it has a full kitchen in the shared area, again spotless. The location is perfect, esp as it was raining so only a few steps to get food. Will def be back

There was no hanging space at all, not even anywhere for a coat. Nowhere to store clothes if you’re staying a few days. A low score for staff as we didn’t see any (so can’t rate them). It’s self check in and check out. Nobody there at all. Would be nice to have someone at reception. Odd that a place for multiple people sharing doesn’t have a host. It lacked atmosphere because of that. Shame.

Reviewed Apr 17, 2026location in center of town. Owner has nicely converted a former backpacker hostel to comfortable single unit accommodations with shared kitchen facilities. Owner provided a secure location to store our luggage (we came by train) until check in and after checkout (until the train returned). Easy walkable access to Arthur's Pass National Park hiking trails and a short walk to the train station. Local flock of Kea parrots were entertaining.
Given that the Motel and Lodge is located in a Dark Sky environment, the presence of bright, motion activated lights on the premises was a nighttime distraction. Replacing these lights with lower wattage and shielded fixtures would improve the star watching on clear sky evenings without compromising security or walkability.

Wish there would have been different dining options available in the Village. Would be great if the communal kitchen space offered a few spices/seasonings other than salt and pepper along with oil to cook with.
