Lake Front Yala Safari

Die Unterkunft ist perfekt wenn man eine Safari im Yala Nationalpark machen möchte. Wir waren sehr froh, dass wir diese Unterkunft entdeckt haben und gekoppelt gleich eine Safari mit dem Vater der Familie dazubuchen konnten. Die gesamte Familie ist wahnsinnig lieb und hilfsbereit und kümmert sich um einen.

The location is advertised as "lake front" there is however a main road between the place and the lake. Btw - the lake does not have much water left anyway - which would likely change after the rainy season. The aircon temp could not be raised- so you had the choice between freezing or fighting the mozzies without aircon. The breakfast ( and that was the takeaway box for the Yala Safari) was disappointing. No soap or shampoo was provided in the bathroom. The half day private Safari was good - but no leopard sighting though - I know you can't book those leopards in advance😀. Unfortunately the driver's English skills made it a bit hard to communicate t he basics. Next time I should learn some of the local language ...🤓

Zeer gastvrije mensen! We konden zelfs nog diner bestellen bij hen ‘s avonds en ons ontbijtpakket lag klaar om 5u15 ‘s ochtends voor de safari.

This accommodation is run by a friendly family; it’s clean and lovely, the food is good, the safaris are brilliant, and we even saw elephants in the ‘garden’ at night. Highly recommended.

Voor deze prijs geen zeepje, waterkoker, etc. Wat het verblijf toch net wat aangenaam maakt. Het mist net een beetje extra wat je verder bijna overal merkt.

We only stayed one night but this little homestay was beautiful. The host was amazing and very helpful and very friendly. The host also let us know that we could do a safari tour if we wanted as well. The homestay has beautiful scenery around it and is only a short drive into the main town. We organised breakfast as it was convenient for us and we had amazing fresh fruit with egg hoppers and toast. We had parking for our tuk tuks which was great as well. If you get a chance great little homestay to stay at.

Our stay at lake front yala safari was amazing. The property is right in the beautiful jungle and feels very peaceful. They offer safaris to Yala for a great price. The rooms were clean and tidy, and they offered dinner which was beautiful home cooked Sri Lankan food, really tasty! The family made the stay very special, they are kind and helpful and will do everything to ensure you are comfortable. We even went to a local festival with their daughter who showed us around and gave us lots of insight into the culture. If you are lucky you can see wild elephants on the door as they come through the jungle. A great place to stay if you want to see Yala and would highly recommend.

The hosts were incredibly welcoming, making us feel right at home. This lovely property sits near a serene lake, just 2-3 km from the bus station. They arranged a fantastic full-day jeep safari for us with meal option. We did spot two leopards during our safari.

The host family were friendly and helpful especially with providing breakfast and delicious picnic lunch for the Safari which they also provided. The Safari driver was excellent with finding the animals to view. Lake Front Yala is a good location close to Kataragama town to visit the Temple and the Wild Edge Restaurant next door also very good.

We enjoyed our stay here. Rooms are clean, new, bed was very comfortable and bathroom spacious and clean. The hotel is 5/10 min walking from the sanctuaries. The family took care of us in every detail, we went on a safary with them and we recommended it!! We manage to see a mama leopard with three calves, elefant and enjoyed the calm of the park. They also organised the taxi for our next stop. We definitely recommend the place!!!

Es war alles da, was man benötigt, das Zimmer war sehr groß und sauber. Der Besitzer hat uns dann sogar noch nach Hiritiketiya gebracht. Ich würde auch die Safari empfehlen, wir haben sie leider über einen anderen Anbieter gemacht und waren fast 1,5 Stunden früher zurück als unser Hotelbesitzer mit seiner Gruppe - hat uns im Nachhinein sehr geärgert weil andere Gäste sehr geschwärmt haben von der Safari mit ihm.

Lovely clean spacious rooms, lovely hosts, they organised our safari. Nice outside verandah to have breakfast. Close to Tamarind Lake hotel where you can get a day pass to use the pool and get good, well priced lunch.

No swimming pool. Not much to do around the area if you have a spare day. Very noisy in the early morning so if you like to sleep in, forget it!

A beautiful stay at Lake View! The scenery is absolutely gorgeous and perfect for nature lovers. The beds were incredibly comfortable, and the entire place was clean and tidy. The staff was very friendly and welcoming—highly recommend

The room was very clean and comfortable. The air conditioning worked well, and toiletries were provided upon request. Breakfast was good, and the lady of the house was very friendly—she even offered us fresh guavas, which was a nice touch.

However, our overall experience was somewhat mixed. We had booked a safari with another company, and it seemed this was not very well received by the hosts. Our initial interactions felt a bit awkward, although things improved somewhat afterwards. At the end of our stay, the men of the house offered to drive us to Mirissa for 18,000 LKR. During the trip, he asked us to pay an additional 1,000 LKR for highway tolls and kept the change without returning it to us. Unfortunately, we were also fined for not wearing seat belts, although we had not been informed that this was required -as most of the cars dont even have a seat belts in Sri Lanka.. In total, we paid 19,000 LKR despite originally agreeing on 18,000 LKR. While these issues were relatively minor, the situation was a bit unfortunate and left us with a slightly disappointing final impression of what was otherwise a pleasant stay.

We received a warm welcome. The room was neat and clean. The owners are very friendly and offer tips on things to do in the area. We hope this family gets many more bookings because they deserve it!

Die Familie ist total freundlich und hat uns nett mit Tee begrüßt. Das Zimmer ist sehr geräumig und gut klimatisiert, es gibt warmes Wasser im Badezimmer. Das Abendessen war super lecker und endlich mal etwas spicy. Wir haben eine Halbtags Safari mit einem Bekannten der Familie gemacht und wirklich viel in Yala gesehen, noch besser hat uns allerdings die Nachtsafari mit dem Host gefallen, wo wir einen Leoparden und mehrere Elefanten (auch Babys) gesehen haben. Das war beeindruckend! Danach wurden wir noch auf nette Gespräche und Drinks bei Bekannten eingeladen und hatten einen erinnerungswürdigen Abend. Danke an Nithya und ihre Eltern!

We loved staying here. It was a great choice for our Yala safari. The owners were really warm & welcoming and made us very much at home during our stay. The room was great, with a very comfortable bed and good linens. The bathroom was well equipt with a bud shower and plenty of hot water. We had breakfast & evening meal here. The food was freshly cooked and delicious and plentiful. We booked our safari with the owner and he doubled as our guide. Reasonably priced. We saw 7 leopards on the day, which was a record. On the way back the owner treated us to egg hoppers to celebrate the record sighting. We loved every minute of the day. I have no hesitation in recommending the honestly to others

We hadden een schone ruime kamer. Er stond zelfs een trekker in de badkamer om de vloer droog te trekken. 😃. Nog niet eerder meegemaakt. Er staan 2 jeeps klaar voor de safari. We hebben een fullday safari gedaan. Het ging niet vanzelf maar daddy zorgde ervoor dat we alle dieren waar we voor kwamen gezien hebben. 👍👍 Moeder had een heerlijk ontbijt en lunch meegegeven. 🤗🤗.

The owners are lovely and very accommodating. The room was spotless and the bed very comfy, I would advise ear plugs as it’s near the road, we always take earplugs wherever we go. Would highly recommend this property.

Eine unvergessliche Erfahrung mit einer sehr lieben Familie! Wir wurden von Anfang an sehr herzlich empfangen. Die Familie war jederzeit hilfsbereit und bot uns regelmäßig Tee und Kaffee an. Das Zimmer war sauber, gut ausgestattet und sehr gemütlich. Ein besonderes Highlight war, dass die Familie für uns frische Kokosnüsse von ihrer eigenen Palme geerntet hat – eine tolle Geste! Außerdem haben der Vater und die Tochter spontan eine private Elefanten-Safari mit uns unternommen, die wunderschön und informativ war. Dank der sehr guten Englischkenntnisse der Tochter konnten wir viel über das Land, die Natur und die Kultur erfahren. Am nächsten Tag haben wir mit dem Vater eine Safari im Yala-Nationalpark gemacht, bei der wir unglaublich viele Tiere gesehen haben, darunter Elefanten, Büffel, Krokodile und sogar vier Leoparden! Sein geschultes Auge und seine ruhige, freundliche Art haben die Tour zu einem echten Erlebnis gemacht. Besonders beeindruckt hat uns auch die Hilfsbereitschaft der Familie, als wir später Probleme mit einer verlorenen Tasche in einem Taxi hatten – obwohl wir zu diesem Zeitpunkt gar nicht mehr bei ihnen übernachtet haben, haben sie sich sehr engagiert und uns geholfen, die Tasche wiederzubekommen. Wir haben uns rundum wohl und willkommen gefühlt und würden jederzeit wiederkommen. Eine absolute Empfehlung!

Wir wurden sehr herzlich aufgenommen und willkommen geheißen. Wir hatten ein sehr großes, supersauberes und komfortables Zimmer mit gutem Bad und eigener Veranda. Das Abendessen und auch das Frühstück waren sehr lecker und wurden auf unserer Veranda serviert. Wir konnten mit unserem Gastgeber direkt völlig unkompliziert eine schöne Jeep-Safari im Nationalpark unternehmen. Zudem haben wir noch Tipps zu möglichen Tiersichtungen mit unserem eigenen Auto erhalten, durch die wir weitere Elefanten und sogar einen Leoparden entdeckt haben. Wir haben uns rundum wohl gefühlt und empfehlen diese Unterkunft sehr gerne weiter.

Die Unterkunft liegt zwar in der Nähe des Sees, aber auf der anderen Straßenseite ohne Blick oder Seezugang. Der See ist sowieso kaum zugänglich, weil am Seeufer einfachste private Behausungen aneinandergereiht stehen. Der Name der Unterkunft ist somit etwas irreführend, was aber weiter nichts macht, denn es ist wirklich eine nette Unterkunft!

Przkekochana rodzina, która prowadzi ten biznes. Pokój duży i czysty, dobra klimatyzacja. Właściciel ma swój samochód safari, którym zaproponowal nam wieczorną przejażdżkę za cenę tylko paliwa do samochodu! Było to cudowne przeżycie, zwiedzilismy okolice, odwiedziliśmy jego przyjaciela, który poczęstował nas kokosem proato z drzewa, po czym przejechaliśmy się trasą między blokami parku i udalo nam sie zobaczyć kilka słoni oraz lamparta! Następnego dnia jak byliśmy na safari gospodarze zajęli sie praniem naszych ubrań, tak że po powrocie czekały na nas suche i czyste. Bardzo zachęcam do stołowania się u nich, gdyż posiłki są bardzo duże i przepyszne! Są bardzo pomocni, ale nie nachalni! Idealnie wyważona proporcja, tak że czuliśmy się bardzo komfortowo

Avevamo già prenotato il safari presso di loro prima di partire dall' Italia perché avevamo letto recensioni positive e abbiamo fatto bene. Il safari è stato perfetto, jeep comoda solo per noi 4 , abbiamo visto tantissimi animali leopardo incluso...noi abbiamo scelto di fare il safari tutta la giornata ed è stato molto bello ...lo consiglio

Una famiglia super accogliente che ci ha fatti sentire davvero come a casa! Siamo stati benissimo, la struttura è immersa in un bel giardino, la camera era molto ampia e il letto comodissimo. Tutto molto pulito. Ottima la colazione tipica dello Sri Lanka, preparata sul momento dalla signora con ingredienti genuini. Si trova a solo 15-20 minuti a piedi dal recinto sacro dove ogni sera si tiene la puja serale di Kataragama. Consigliatissimo!

Our stay at Lake Front Yala Safari will definitely remain in our memories for a long time, thanks to the warmth and kindness of the family who runs this place. The atmosphere was genuinely homely and welcoming. The rooms were clean, and the food they served was absolutely delicious and fresh. The safari was professionally organized, and it was clear that our driver was very experienced. We saw a wide variety of animals, and we were lucky enough to spot leopards several times – once from a very close distance. We highly recommend this place and truly regret that we couldn’t stay longer.

This homestay was such a delight! The room was spotless – truly the cleanest we found in Sri Lanka. The lovely family made us feel so welcome, even offering fresh juice from their own trees (the mother literally climbed up to pick the fruit!). We enjoyed great conversations and were especially impressed by their 16-year-old daughter: bright, kind, fluent in English, and full of curiosity about the world. They also arrange safaris, making it the perfect mix of comfort, warmth, and adventure.

This property is located in a lovely atmosphere with a lake in sight and a couple of kilometers away from center of the Kataragama city which was convenient. The room was comfortable, air-conditioned and equipped with adequate amenities. Both the room and bathroom were spotlessly clean. I was able to explore local attractions in Kataragama including the Kiri Vehera Temple, Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Dewalaya and Wadasiti Kanda during the Esala Festival while staying here. The property is managed by a friendly and hospitable family who were quick to accommodate any requests.

The “lake front Yala Safari” enjoys an ideal location, set in lush greenery right in front of the lake. The room was spacious and comfortable. What truly makes this place special is the wonderful family who runs it. The father organized an unforgettable safari for us in Yala National Park, where we were incredibly lucky to spot no fewer than three leopards. The mother is an excellent cook who delighted us with a delicious rice and curry made from the freshest ingredients. She even welcomed us into her kitchen to watch her prepare the dishes. Their daughter is a lovely young woman, fluent in English, who generously shared with us fascinating insights into both Sri Lankan cuisine and culture. We felt genuinely pampered and cared for throughout our stay. A stop here is highly recommended — this family truly makes it a memorable experience.

Lovely and very helpful family, property very clean, the full day safari organised through the hosts was great, location walkable to Kataragama. There was an issue with the lock which was sorted out immediately once we pointed it out

The wifi does not really work - just bear it in mind if you are relying on wifi to book things / download tickets, etc We only had one large towel between two people, no soaps etc (this is fairly standard within Sri Lanka but would be an added bonus)

Though we arrived during the stated check-in time, need to wait for check-in as the previous occupants were out of the property and yet to arrive back from their yala-safari arranged by the property. So we handed over the luggage to the owner and proceeded with our planned visits (without refreshing).

We stayed with this lovely family for two nights in February as part of our honeymoon. They were so friendly and welcoming and made our stay so comfortable. We had beautiful homemade food and the room was perfect. They organised a full day safari for us in Yala national park which we really enjoyed. We cannot recommend staying with them enough ❤️

We spent two nights in the room, which was reasonably priced. The room and lodging area are located within the family compound. The family was very helpful and organised two safaris for us in blocks 1 and 5. The jeep was in good condition, and they even drove us to our next destination, which was a nice gesture.

The hosts were very good and accommodating of all our requests. Room was very big and comfortable, and a great budget stay.

we stayed here for two nights and also did the safari with them. it was a lovely place to stay, very clean room and bathroom with good air con! we were given passion fruit juice when we arrived, my first time having it, and it was delicious! we were cooked dinner both nights which was very yummy, and I was invited to help shape and cook the coconut roti, a lovely memory. for the safari the host also made us packed up breakfast and lunch! which she got up at 2am to do, so grateful and it was delicious. the safari was very good, we saw three leopards, solo elephants and an elephant family! plus crocodiles, many amazing birds, deer and water buffalo! we enjoyed our lunch by the coast. they also collected us from Ella and drove us onto hiriketiya, stopping to get us chai tea which was very sweet! for the final breakfast I requested the coconut sugar pancakes from the mum as they were my favourite!! she made lots and they were delicious and the last time I had them in Sri Lanka, so I was very happy! she also showed us their puppy and kittens which were adorable!! just before we were setting off the host called my partner over and whizzed him off on his moped to show him a giant squirrel that he had spotted, my partner had been wanting to see one the whole trip and we'd let him know on the safari, so he was beyond happy that the host enabled this! thank you so much, we had an amazing stay :)

If you want an all inclusive experience, free of any hassle in Yala area, that’s the place. From breakfast to dinner with obviously a safari between. They are nice people.

Very authentic place with great atmosphere. Staff were extremely kind, we felt like at home. Dinner was delicious. We had to get up very early and they provided us with fresh fruit for our trip.

This property has got to be the best homestay in Sri Lanka. The family are extremely kind and supportive, especially Nithya their daughter, who speaks excellent English. The family will organise a safari trip for you at a very reasonable price. Dinosha the mother is a first class chef and her food is exceptional. The room was extremely clean with A/C , and lovely hot water. The property is very good value for money. I certainly recommend this property.

If you are looking to do the Yala Safari, this is the place to be! The accommodation is very clean, right by the big lake. We did the safari through our hosts and also did one cooking class which we really enjoyed!! (Food was sooo good). They also help with everything you need! Can only recommend

If you're planning a safari, it might be a good idea to check with the hotel about arrangements and compare prices. Since we only spent a few hours there, it's hard to say more, but our short experience was positive!

The main issue we encountered was that the heating system for the shower water didn’t work, which was a bit uncomfortable.

Honestly, it was our worst stay in Sri Lanka. To start, we didn't feel the usual welcoming and hospitality we felt in our other stays in Sri Lanka. We were asked if we had booked a safari (which we did because we didn't know the offer safaris), and the host told us that we need to do the check out at 11:00. When we asked her if we could leave our bag in the common area until we return, she said no. Luckily, our driver didn't mind passing at 11:00 and putting the bag in the car. Also, there wasn't hot water, and we saw stains on the towels and bed sheets. Lots of mosquitos and no mosquito net. The bed was very wide, and my feet were touching the bottom part (I'm not THAT tall). All together, I don't recommend this place. If you plan on spending one night (arrive in the evening) and leave after your safari the next day, go for it cause it's overall cheaper than other places.

- Room was spacious and clean (except for the clothes rack which had a layer of dust on it) - Bed and pillows were comfortable - AC was powerful - Shower pressure was good - Welcome drink - The lady of the house supplied us with a basin and hand soap when we asked for it - Affordable price for the stay

- No hairdryer - No hot shower (but it was okay except for the initial shock as the days in Kataragama are hot) - Cleanliness was not consistent - the clothes rack had a layer of dust on it and we cleaned it ourselves before using the rack - Limited power plugs - Many mosquitoes and insects in the room but this seems to be typical in Kataragama from other travellers we chatted with. The mosquitoes didn’t bother us, but a net for the bed might be good - It was a little hard to communicate with the couple but their daughter spoke better English, so sometimes we asked her to join in the discussions. The lady of the house seemed a little impatient (not smiling and arms akimbo) when we were deliberating whether to go with them for the safari, but she was smiley when she passed us a plate of bananas from their garden at night. The man of the house switched off our electricity from the outside when we were still inside (he thought we had left the room), we thought he could have knocked and checked first if we were still in the room - Drilling works on our outside wall at 9+ am on the day we slept in - perhaps the drilling works could have been done when we were out or after we had checked out

Host is very kind and welcoming. She gave us tea on arrival and bananas from her own garden which tasted amazing. Immaculatley clean room and bathroom. Location is a little away from everything. But we had our tuk tuk so it was not a problem for us to drive to resturaunt for dinner.

The family that run the place are so lovely, they really made our stay! Beautiful spacious room with AC, great breakfast, and a stunning garden with monkeys! We booked a safari through them and it was absolutely incredible. The guide has an incredible eye for wildlife and we saw loads! Highly recommend for a place in Kataragama.

Only cold shower but it was so hot we were okay with it. Also lots of mosquitoes and there wasn't a mess over the ventilation in the bathroom where they seemed to be coming in. A net over the bed would have fixed that

We stayed one night at Lake Front Yala Safari to see the fantastic ceremonies in the temple complex. The room was clean, quite comfortable and the family were friendly. Breakfast, which was extra, was ok. We didn’t do the safari, but they did drive us to Ella and we saw elephants on the road through the park, which was nice.

The property is undergoing renovation, and the owner rushed us out for checkout as the next set of guests had arrived. Booked this place due to the high rating others had provided, but there is on-going construction. And the owner suggested to cancel our booking after we reached the place and i actually had called him an hour before. He could have informed us earlier through message as we were in constant tocuh but chose not to :-( and we reached late around 5 30 pm as it was too late we stayed back. There was a power outage for 1 hr, and I was about to step out and search for another place as my kid was getting cranky, but power came back, and we were too tired to find another place. The owner was courteous, and Safari was slightly overpriced as compared to other vendors (the going rate was 21 to 22k and charged 25k and 14k for Jeep charged 16k) and his jeep had starting issues (battery had concked off, there was a spot where other jeeps were waiting where leopard did a kill and was about to cross the road and our guy couldnt wait as he couldn't swicth off the engine and had to keep moving). The charges would have been fine (I was informed about the pricing earlier and was okay) if the house was not under renovation. Nevertheless, not a bad stay overall as the dinner served was very nice and fresh.

Sweet family run homestay in a great location for a Yala Safari. The room was spacious, comfortable and clean, with AC for a great price. Homemade rice and curry was the best we have had in Sri Lanka so far! The family couldn’t do enough for us, from gifting us fresh fruit from their garden, taking us to our next hotel and offering constant refreshments and snacks. Safari was absolutely brilliant and would recommend to all those coming to Yala to book through this accommodation! Keen eye for the wildlife, informative and ensured we had a wonderful time. We hope to be back and wish we spent another night!

Great room, very clean and spacious. The hosts were so kind, as well as their lovely daughter! We also did the safari with them. It was amazing! We even saw 4 leopards!

We had a great stay! The room is very big and the bed really comfortable! We also had a terrace and get delicious food freshly made from the family. We also booked the safari with them and it was amazing! Especially the experience on the elephant road feeding them 🐘 They also helped to get to the Bus Station or offer Taxi Service! Thank you

It's a very good place, and I recommended it for every traveller to Kataragama

The place is run by a family and it feels like it from the moment you arive. We enjoyed a very warm welcome and were invited to cook dinner with the mother. She was wonderful and cooked (with our help?) one of our best meals in Sri Lanka. They also offer safaris to Yala Nationalpark by entering through the less crowded entrance from Kataragama, which was great. We spotted many elephants as well as leopards. The room is very simple as can be expected at this price point. However, everything was very clean. Highly recommend to stay here to visit Yala and the impressive temples in Kataragama.
