Everything! This place has a wonderful community vibe. Lots of activities going on everyday such as village bike ride or yoga or excursions to dambulla and Sigiriya and sunset hikes etc etc. lovely large room with fantastic outdoor shower. Great pool. Mostly the fantastic staff, cooking classes and family style dinners!
WiFi not great in the rooms but works well in common areas.
The people were definitely the highlight, but we loved everything. Great activities, beautiful rooms and great shared facilities. Family dinners every night were incredible.
Nothing.
the hospitality, all the staff were so friendly and every individual is accomodated for
nothing, all perfect
Well thought through and felt luxurious . Like a secret island.
Nothing
It felt like family.
It’s not cheap… also food and drinks aren’t cheap but I can still wholeheartedly recommend the stay.
Awesome place, in a beautiful setting and well located for day trips around Sigirya! Wonderful staff and great activities
Nothing!
Our favourite place to stay on our trip - the bedroom, the team and the food were all fantastic! Worth staying for 3 nights as there’s plenty to do.
I have no words for this place. It’s just perfect. The nicest and humble staff you can imagine. At Roy’s you can a wonderful time while enjoying splendid food and drinks. Roy’s offers you the best activities all around sigiriya. If you come here you can put aside all the planning and just discover this wonderful area. It’s a must when you are in that area.
Literally NOTHING. 10/10
Peaceful location, friendly staff and amazing to have so many activities to do all organised by Roys! Loved the family dinners every evening. Rooms immaculate and spacious.
Amazing experience and great hosts who can’t do enough for you and offer a great range of activities in and outside of the property.
Situated in the picturesque Sigiriya, Roy’s offers a visual relaxing paradise. In addition, the warm and friendly staff who go above and beyond, the delicious cooking, communal dinners, social communal areas and the array of activities make this the perfect stay! Perfect place to meet other travelers. Thank you so much to everyone at Roy’s. We loved our stay and it will forever hold a special place in our hearts!
Nothing, we loved our stay at Roy's
This was an amazing stay! The staff were so friendly and welcoming! So many activities organised! We got a room upgrade also which was lovely! Food was amazing and good serving sizes! Cannot fault at all!!! They help arrange transport to next destination also!
I would absolutely recommend staying at Roy’s villa. The staff were so welcoming and helpful, they arrange all the activities for you. We loved the cooking class for dinner. It’s a very sociable setting, so great if you want to meet new people! The food was amazing. We would stay there again.
Nothing
Amazing staff. All staff great help and so friendly. Whole experience 10/10 HIGHLY recommend 👌🏻
So many activities. Workers were so welcoming and friendly. Food was unreal! felt like I was at a resort. 10/10 come here.
Nothing.
The property was just perfect. Thank you for everything. I did 3 activities a day (safari, sunset at Sigiriya rock, lake swimming, temple, cooking class, sunrise …) all this in a super friendly atmosphere ! Made a lot of new friend and I will definitely come back!
Nothing
One of the best places we stayed in Sri Lanka. The guys running the place are amazing and friendly and really make the experience (Roshan was a highlight)! All of the activities are great and family dinner was delicious. Everything was super clean and we’d love to come back!
This place is a 10/10! You feel welcomed and at home from the moment you arrive. Beautiful rooms, common areas and pool. I personally ended my trip here but it’s a great starting point as you‘ll meet other (solo) travelers to exchange and join plans.
-
Beautiful property with the friendliest staff. They really make an effort to make sure everyone is having a nice time and organise all the activities for you. Very social place with lovely places to chill. Even the dorms were laid out really nicely with your own little booth type bed.
Everything is right at Roys. They have mastered the way of creating a community for the amount of days that you stay. The way the staff feels like family and the guests feel like friends from the start is amazing. This makes Roy’s villa different than any hostel I’ve stayed. And I’ve been to Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia and Malaysia. Roy’s Villa is a MUST visit.
-
The property was really nice and there was a really great social atmosphere. Works well for backpackers and holiday makers and the activities organised by Roy’s were really great and very reasonable. The location is a little off the beaten track which makes it very peaceful
The dorms were very spacious and modern! Super social atmosphere, very friendly staff I like how they organized every activity and made sure everyone had a wonderful time! I couldn’t ask for more 😍👍🏽 The best hostel Ive ever been so far ( globally it’s ranked as one of the best hostels, i guess in 2020 they won the best hostel in the world, i can definitely see why)
Best people! So kind, so helpful. They have created a magical place in the middle of Sigirya. Highlight of traveling through Sri Lanka. Rooms are beautiful and so comfortable. They organise activities who can’t be missed!
Had such an amazing stay at Roy’s, it is a very special place. Rooms are amazing and so clean. Really great atmosphere and a great place to meet other travelers. The family dinner is so great you get to try loads of curries and make one during the cooking class. The trips during the day were great we were able to do everything on our list as Roy’s organise a morning and evening activity which means planing what you want to see/do is easy. Would highly recommend the place and staff are amazing! ✨
Nothing everything ing was great
We loved everything about Roys Villa. Best place ever. Perfect balance of relaxing by the pool and adventuring in the incredible places nearby. Loads of things to do and see around. Firstly the staff were incredible, made our whole trip seamless. Organised everything with local sightseeing. A big special thank you to everyone there, incredible team! There is a great local feel to Roys Villa, which you feel when you are enjoying the local foods, playing the local board games and getting insider tips for your journey. There is a lot of good here, they do a lot of community work and giving back to the community. As locals themselves, they make sure they look after everyone around them. The food was absolutly amazing, so much variety. incredible Si Lankan food. The room was incredible, huge bed that was so comfortable. Air con was great and kept the room perfect temperature. The outdoor shower and bathroom was so nice. Magical ! The balcony was very comfortable with a beautiful view out over the trees. With a net balcony that was so nice to sum lounge and read in. The place is very peaceful. We saw so many birds from the upper balcony, we spent hours watching out, pelicans, storks, eagles, kites and more! Do not miss out on Roys Villa! We would come back to Sri Lanka just to stay here again!
we loved everything.
I really liked the rooms and the food. They also offer free trips and the vibe is really nice. Everyone is like one big family. You also can join for a safari trip, cooking classes and every night there is a family dinner.
It was a bit more pricy than normal hostels in Sri Lanka but still not expensive.
We liked just everything about our stay, Roy and his friends who are running the Villa were absolutely amazing, they did everything to make the most out of everyone's stay. All the activities are great, not only the main sights in Sigiriya, but also things like making coconut bowls or a sunset tour to a small, local temple. They create an incomparable atmosphere and make everyone interact with each other, the family dinner every night is such a great thing to socialize. And the food is so yummy! On top, the whole place is spotlessly clean and the rooms are beautiful (especially the outdoor showers). Everyone who travels to Sri Lanka should visit their place - it is even a reason to come to Sri Lanka ;-) It was the best hostel we ever stayed at - by far.
Nothing! Only that we had to leave (we even extended our stay)
Amazing food, social aspect is amazing, the best staff I’ve ever come across at any accommodation and everything is organised very very well.
Everything was amazing apart from the WiFi not working very well.
Roy’s Villa is by far the best hostel I’ve ever been! Apart from the amazing facilities which you can see on the photos, the staff + other travelers have made my stay here an absolute 10/10! Great atmosphere with very friendly people!
Staying at Roy's was the best hostel experience I've had so far. The hostel is beautiful and the people are amazing. They're so friendly en super helpful. It's a very sociable hostel, ideal for solo travellers, couples or small friend groups. They organise a lot of activities and every night there's a family dinner where all the guests eat together. A bit more pricy than the average hostel but definitely worth the money.
Roys Villa is the best place I have stayed on my travels. From the family dinners at night to the arranged activities during the day. It’s spotless clean and super comfortable. I would recommend Roy’s to all of my friends and family. The people who work there are so friendly and helpful. I really loved the tours given by the staff they were really informative. 10/10, we will be back!
Our experience at Roy’s was incredible- the staff were so friendly and immediately made us feel welcome and even helped us plan the rest of our trip! They offer loads of great activities, would particularly recommend the sunrise hike. Roy has made a lovely atmosphere, feels like a big family :)
That we couldn’t stay for longer !
Best staff, great activities, tasty food! All in all, amazing hostel experience!
Roy's Villa is such a special place - Roy and his friends have created such a beautiful community and I felt so welcomed there. Everyone I met (both staff and other travellers) were so nice. There has been a lot of care and effort put into decorating and landscaping - it feels like such an oasis. I loved the upstairs lounge area where you can just hang out on the beanbags and hammocks while overlooking green fields. The food was great, and quite reasonably priced. I loved the activities they organised, especially the elephant safari trip. It was also nice that there were some free activities you could do. I hope that this becomes the new standard for accommodation - it was just great. Thanks Roy and the whole team for the wonderful work you're doing!
The dorm that I was staying in was a little different to the pictures, however honestly it was still a very nice dorm and I was very comfortable.
Beautiful property in a serene setting. I felt a calmness come over me as soon as I arrived having initially been a bit nervous as a first time solo traveller. Every staff member is kind and attentive, often suggesting additions to your travel route or tips for making life a little easier! Roy and Roshun are open to suggestions and are actively trying to make this the best hostel
The hostel is a little bit more pricey all things considered and it can be a little confusing with all prices in USD but once you’re aware of that it’s fine!
This was definitely the highlight of our trip! Everything at Roy’s was amazing, the room, the staff, the food, the people we met there and all the activities organised by Roy’s team. Thank you for making our time in Sigiriya a memorable one. Bonus: best chai I had in Sri Lanka! Davina & Houmayra
The community, the story behind this amazing place and mostly the people working there
Not always toilet paper 😂
Loved the activities, dorms and of course the pool! Roy and the whole team are so friendly and really take care of you. Family meals are delicious!
Roy and all his crew go beyond their abilities to make you feel at home. They all learn your name from the beginning, which is impressive. The facilities are unparalleled and the dorms are clean and spacious. A true gem in Sri Lanka. Will be back!

We loved it here and will definitely be back. Roy’s villa is so good. Beautiful set up for a hostel style. We stayed in the premium delux (free upgrade from delux) the best open shower, huge room, clean, new, and the nets to chill on outside of room. They plan heaps of activities we didn’t do as we had already paid a private tour guide. The food is great and big portions.
We weren’t able to use our card as they said they preferred cash. So just make sure you have cash and enough for all your meals and activities. For 2 people we had 2 dinners each (burger and curry) 2 breakfast each (Avo on toast / egg) 2 coffees each. Between us 4 beers and 2 cocktails and it cost us $200 AUD. Which we also add to pay cash with and wasn’t expecting that much. So nearly didn’t have that amount. Family dinners are ate together and are all the same, which I loved as it meant you got to meet everyone. But it also means that dinner could be 7pm or it could be at 8:30pm. So have a few snacks with you just incase you’re hungry as they don’t have snacks. :) All in all, these things definitely wouldn’t stop me from coming here, as mentioned I’d be back. But feel others should know before booking.
All the staff were very sweet, and they really made it like a social hostel, were you felt at Home. The Daily activities and the family dinners really made it great!
A bit far from public transport, that’s the only thing
Thank you to Roy, Sonny, Damis and all the staff at Roy's villa for making our first stop in Sri Lanka such a special one. My mum and I stayed for 3 nights. The place is beautiful - there's a lovely rooftop to sit out on and relax, there are yoga mats, there's a swing, a garden and a lovely communal area for breakfast and the family dinner. The rooms were spacious and the bed was comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed doing all of the activities with Roy and his staff - we did the safari, Pidurangala, lions red, dumbala cave. Everything was well organised and reasonable. The free Cookery class was a highlight. We learned a lot about Sri Lankan cuisine, and of course really enjoyed tasting all the delicious food! Thank you again!
Nothing
It felt very homely and comfortable
Nothing
What a wonderful place, but this is becouse the staff is lovely, the best Hostel I have ever satayed. They make your stay unique and that the place keep a special magic for all the travelers who pass by. They make you feel like at home every thing is easy with them. Thank you very much for everything and especially for the surprise you gave me for my birthday, being away from home I felt like I was there. Good Luck for all of you!!
Roy and his team are perfect hosts. They make you feel very welcome, food and drinks are great plus there’s a different activity schedule everyday. Rooms are clean and spacious, loved the outdoor shower. We had a great time!
Best hostel I have stayed at - all the activities organised and daily family dinner were amazing, made it feel like home and met the best people!
Our stay at Roy’s Villa was absolutely amazing. Their kindness, hospitality and the activities they organised were very much appreciated. Would 100% recommend if you like a nice, clean place in nature where you can meet lots of travelers. THANK YOU!
The most AMAZING place to stay!! It was clean, comfortable and well designed. The staff went above and beyond to make it a fantastic experience - they have daily activities organised that you can join in with if you want including safari, sunrise hikes, cooking classes. Perfect for a solo traveller like me. They organise transport to take you to different locations if needed. The place is beautiful! Couldn’t recommend it enough. No where else I’ve stayed in Sri Lanka has come close to this place!!
Nothing
A lovely clean and friendly hotel to start our trip to Sri Lanka.
The property it self is so beautiful and comfortable. The dorm rooms are lovely and private. Family dinners are delicious! Staff is so friendly and make you feel at home.
Overall I found it so expensive. Since you’re isolated away from anything else, they can charge the prices they do (because you have no other choice). If you ate somewhere else or did an activity not provided by them, they became really defensive and question why you did that… haha. This place is not for the budget backpackers!! My wallet was crying by the end of my stay.
Everything was fantastic and everybody should stay here! Great facilities, best food I’ve eaten so far and a brilliant atmosphere to meet great people (inc the staff) and experience great activities organised by the team here.
I am usually not a hostel kind of person but this one came highly recommended so thought I’d give it a go and I’m so glad I did! From arrival to departure the staff were amazing, giving me a free welcome drink and a free snack for my onward journey. The activities were so so good from sunset and sunrise walks to the elephant wildlife safari. The food was amazing and great portion sizes. The beds were comfortable. But what I loved the most was the upstairs lounge area, it had beautiful views and was the perfect spot to relax and read. I would absolutely stay here again.
I loved being surrounded by nature so this wasn’t an issue for me but just be aware if you’re hoping for a walk into sigirya it is quite far out.
Excellent full service hostel in a peaceful, rural area outside of Sigiriya town. The hostel is nicely designed and the staff are so helpful. They organize daily activities and can help with any transportation needs you have. The nightly dinner buffet is outstanding and well worth the money.
Because it is in a secluded area, there isn't much you can walk to from the hostel. Wifi didn't work well in the dorm.
Really nice hostel. 1. Very clean 2. Great staff 3. Activities were good value for money and well organised 4. Family dinner every night (7usd) was a great way to meet people. 5. Big and comfy beds with lots of personal space. I had fun there!
1. The door to the room from the outside and the internal bathroom doors were very heavy and loud (even with earplugs). Roy’s kids are cute but they get up at 7am and make noise. Also building work started at 8am so I didn’t have the best sleep there. 2. I also found the food/drink to be overpriced. For example, the portion of fries for 4USD wasn’t big enough for the price. 3. The top bunks were really hot and stuffy as the aircon didn’t really reach up there. A personal fan would have helped. It cooled down a bit at night but I still woke up hot at 7am. If you can’t handle heat like me I recommend requesting a bottom bed.
One of our favourite stays in Sri Lanka. Roy’s Villa is such a gem. Roy and his team truly understand hospitality and have build something great here. Also, it will be hard to find better food around Sigiriya than at Roy’s. Both room and common areas are wonderful and we really loved chilling at the upstairs lounge and fireplace at night.
Hardly anything. We found the safari slightly expensive.
This was the nicest hostel I have ever stayed at! The staff were wonderful and organised some really fun activities during the day - including a sunrise hike, elephant safari and trip to the ancient city. The food was delicious and they organised a really fun cooking class. The rooms were clean and the social areas were really nice. I met some amazing people here and my time here was one of my highlights of my time in Sri Lanka!
Roy’s place feels like a home away from home. Roy and his staff are incredibly helpful, and the family dinner each night is great way to meet others, but there’s also plenty of space and beautiful hammock views if you like quiet time. Food is amazing too :). Thank you Roy and team!
Nothing
The hosts organized a ton of activities through out the day which was great fun. The common areas are just beautiful.
Food and Drinks are pricy.
The staff was so nice, everything was perfect. The food was also amazing and the activities proposed by the hostel were great, always very arranging and helpful :) definitely the best hostel I’ve ever been We were in a private double room and it was very comfortable, with AC and a small terrace just for us.
Little bit high prices for the food compared to local restaurant but it’s worth it because absolutely delicious
Beautiful hostel, nice stuff and activities
Bad showers, breakfast should be included for that prize
Had a great and comfi stay at Roys. The entire team is super friendly and supportive. I liked the many tour options and the family dinner in the evenings. My dorm room and bed was great with A/C.
Just small improvements I see for the wifi connection, missing trash bins and not really hot shower for the dorm. The location is rather remote so needs transport with tuktuk at all times to get around.
Roy and his team take care of everything, all the activities and outings are arranged for you. great atmosphere created, family dinners in the evening make for a very sociable stay. The cooking class was an unexpected bonus, learnt how to make Veggie dahl and Jackfruit curry from scratch!
Brilliant place, best facilities in any hostel I’ve stayed at. Super friendly staff who know your name after a couple of hours. Great trips, dinners etc. extremely social but also space to chill by yourself.
Everything at the bar is in dollars not local currency but you must pay at the end in local currency.
Roy and all the people from Roys villa are so amazing. Best hostel of sri lanka for us. The activities, the place, the people. It is all perfect. 🙌🏻
This is an amazing hostel. The staff were amazing and there were so many great activities organised every day for all the travellers. The elephant safari is a must! The food/family dinners were incredible! Very sociable but also pretty chilled out vibe. Beautiful wild peacocks roaming the area. The dorm room was comfortable and spacious.
Mosquitos were a real problem (I got eaten alive!) so make sure you have a good repellent. The area is secluded so no proper shops or ATM within walking distance - come with everything you will need. (If not the hostel will gladly arrange a tuktuk for you!)
Roy creates a very social atmosphere by organizing all kind of activities.
-
Roy and his staff were exceptionally welcoming, it was sociable and I felt included instantly. there were activities daily, group meals and arranged hikes to all the places you would consider visiting. Highly recommend.
Probably the best place we have ever stayed. We loved everything! Roy and the team go above and beyond to make it a special experience for everyone. The private room was super comfortable and clean and a mosquito net was provided - air con worked great. The family dinners and excursions were just amazing and the food and drink was delicious. We loved chilling out on the top floor too. We don't often stay in hostels and this was better than most hotels! We will be back!
Nothing!
Great location, great vibe and great people. Probably the best place to stay in Sri Lanka.
Had a great experience at Roy’s Villa. Extremely sociable with friendly staff who go out of their way help guests. Lots of organised activities and the delicious meals are great for bringing people together - as a solo traveller I had no issues meeting people here. The dorms are some of the nicest I’ve stayed in anywhere and are very well thought out. The common areas are also great for relaxing during the day. Thoroughly recommend!
Roy’s is amazing - it’s more of a hotel but with the hostel vibe. Socialable and great for any traveller. Loved having everything organised for us and doing activities as a big group and the shared main area with free cooking class and ‘family dinner’ was lovely. Really nice to meet people at the start of our trip too and the staff were so friendly. Loved the smoothie bowl for breakfast in the morning too and the amazing burger we had. Wish we had stayed longer!
It’s already been mentioned but the soundproofing in the room - we could hear the couple next doors whole conversation which resulted in us getting no sleep when we had to be up for a sunrise trip (although they were being pretty loud so probably fine if you had someone quiet next door) Our bathroom door kept getting stuck also It would also be great to have some mosquito repellent or something to drive them away in the shared dinner area - we came away with about 20 bites each… Only minor things though!
The surrounding fields are peaceful with wild peacocks roaming and the hostel itself is well run and has lush aesthetic, the staff have created a great atmosphere for solo travellers. Overall a good stay. Great Sri Lankan hospitality, and Roy and his team do make every effort for their guests.
Fairly loud at night if you have a private room as it is right next to the kitchen and the social area, and could hear everything from the adjacent room (farts, snores & giggles). Building works are currently underway so it is not as peaceful during the day as it could be right now. Fair warning: it is a hostel so tours are being sold at every opportunity and it is best for meeting young travellers on their first tourist trip abroad. Also, not exactly close to town (10-15mins tuktuk) so make sure to organise transport to have your freedom!
Amazing property, amazing hosts, amazing hostel vibes.
Beautiful property overlooking rice fields just a short distance from Sigiriya town. A really great atmosphere with a good mix of people - from backpackers to couples to more mature travellers. Roy and the rest of the team who work there (special shout out to David!) are all top class - they become your 'family' real quickly and we appreciated their very warm hospitality. The breakfasts, lunches and dinners we had there were all fantastic (I am still dreaming about the delicious kottu!), the free cooking class was great and all the excursions they plan were tops - it made our time in Sigiriya completely stress free as we didn't have to plan much and got to see and do everything we wanted (Sigiriya Rock, Pidurangala Rock, Ancient city of Polonnaruwa, wild elephant safari etc). The team even organised an amazing ayurvedic message for us! I could not recommend Roy's VIlla more!
Our private room was on the neighbouring property and the bathroom was a little dark (no windows), but that was a very minor inconvenience to an otherwise fantastic stay!
Lovely vibe, well designed, community feel.
Nothing it was perfect.
It's almost impossible to describe how warm and welcome this place was. The hostel is beautiful, very clean, organizes good activities for a fair price, provides delicious food, has the nicest people and the staff will always be there for you if you need anything. I could go on and on about why it is the best place to stay but you truly have to experience it for yourself.
No complaints whatsoever
It was best choise to stay in roy’s villa. Amazing owner with his team were very welcoming. The food was best we eat in Sri lanka. We took hike, safari, Roy did the dinner lesson all best quality. So special place.
Nothing
Great friendly staff. Inclusive and took time to advise and organise your stay.
We loved that the property was out in nature and the main building has an upper floor with great views of the rice paddies. Great to kick back and relax with a cocktail or beer after a long day of exploring the area. The team were friendly, helpful and booked excursions for us. We loved the owners sons who kept my partner entertained playing football with him! Food was great also!
We booked a private room but it wasn’t very soundproof and we could hear the conversations of the people in the next room. The bed was also quite small.
