The Market Retreat

We loved our stay - great location near local bars and cafes and a lovely beautiful room.

Notre séjour s’est super bien passé, David s’est super bien occupé de nous. L’établissement est top, bien placé, il y a plein d’endroits sympas dans les alentours.

The location was perfect and the apartment had everything we needed

Leaving 😫

Excellet location, close to the Tram, Metro, multiple tourist places and restaurants. We were able to do most things by foot. Even though the apartment is just above the Albert Cuyp Markt, the noise didn't bother us at all. The host was very kind and helpful. He was already there to welcome us, always available to answer questions and help us have the best experience!

The apartment is in the first floor with some steep stairs - for us it wasn't a problem, but might be something to consider.

Great location, easy to get around

Stairs were steep but manageable.

Great location to the museumplein, no.4 tramline that takes you to Central Station, eating spots. Just above the Albert Cuypstraat Market. David, our host, is excellent and helped us with luggage up the stairs. He also gave good suggestions for day trips. Unseasonally warm and the fan certainly helped!! Very comfortable bed and I liked the modern art and furnishings. Lots of books to browse. Amazing coffee (sumatran).

Noise early in the morning with setting up of market. Not a problem as we rose early.

Great area. Right above the market.

-

The location is brilliant for walking, eating and generally hanging out. Great bars, restaurants and parks within easy walking distance

Nothing, this is our second visit and while the steep stairs are a bit daunting at first, we were very comfortable with them quickly.

A great property with everything you need. It's in an ideal location, with a lot of things in walking distance. David the host was excellent and made check in easy. He also kindly gave us a hand with our case up the steep stairs. The bath was a great to relax in, especially after been on your feet all day. We really enjoyed our say at the Market Retreat.

The accommodation is slightly noisy with the market set up outside and also the trams going past. If you are a light sleeper, I would recommend ear plugs.

Location was perfect and the room was comfortable and clean.

Nothing

Centraal gelegen. Vriendelijke begeleiding Behulpzaam management

Host is very friendly and helpfull

Het onthaal Topkerel!!!!!!

Niets!

The location was excellent. The tram was close so it was easy to get around.on Saturday, the market was open and we were able to try a lot of different foods.

The stairs are 38 steps, very narrow and steep. So keep in mind if that may be a problem for you. The only thing I can say about the room, is there is no place to hang clothes or drawers so we could not keep as tidy as we like while traveling.

We loved our stay! Studio is spacious and has everything you need, including a coffee machine and mini fridge Location is absolutely perfect - tram and trains right at your doorstep The market is fabulous and we never heard boo from them! Great location, facilities and David is super friendly Yes, there are traditional Dutch stairs to get to the studio, but we loved that! Really felt like you were experiencing Amsterdam for all it's beautiful glory

It was a great location. The bed was very comfortable. Very clean. A large space. We loved the table and chairs to set our stuff up. The open window was nice to cool off. Market convenient - also laundromat just across the way. Also tram stop right across street.

It was a challenging flight of STEEP stairs to climb (length of 3 US fights). Narrow and dark. Too much “stuff”. That wooden chair needs a new home. Definitely need to get a luggage rack. Better lighting by the beds for reading.

The bed is so comfortable, the place is neat and well done, and David is an awesome guy.

Very convenient location, 10 minutes by tram from the central station and walkable distance to the convention center. It's also close to any other attractions you want to visit if that's your first visit to Amsterdam. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was clean..

There's a fridge, but no microwave if you need to warm something up. No curtains in the shower.

Gute Lage

Kein Platz für Kleider versorgen.Wir lebten aus dem Koffer! Schrank oder Kommode wäre eine Anschaffung wert. Balkon klein, aber fein! Auch da empfehle ich kleiner Tisch und 2 Klappstühle👍

Amsterdam was lovely but I wouldn’t suggest staying here

Would be nice for the owner to advise that the markets pictured get set up every morning and it’s extremely noisy.

Amazing location, lovely apartment. David was very hospitable. Perfect place for a long weekend in Amsterdam!

My friend and I had no issue with the stairs but the description of the property could have maybe stated how steep they were (pictures may help). Would not be ideal if you had any mobility problems

Great place. Host David was very nice. Would stay here again.

Really enjoyed staying at this place! Great location, beautiful room, very responsive host. Sun on the balcony in the afternoon! And a great bathtub 😄

David was a great host

Great location, much bigger space for the value compared to other European places I looked at. The tub was also lovely. Yes, the stairs are steep but if you’re active (and I hope you are going to such a walkable city!) you’ll be fine. However, if you’re drinking or partaking in other Amsterdam offerings… be mindful. David was also an excellent host, it’s always nice to have a friendly face welcoming you upon arrival to a new city!

As a few others mentioned, the art was a bit more of a hinderance than enjoyable for the space. It would have been nice to have a luggage rack, closet with hangers, or a cozy chair. Also, the bed is normal for a European king with two twins pushed together, but they do concave inward a bit. After a few days our backs were feeling that.

Cosy and modern furnishings, the bed was so comfortable and being able to stream from phone onto the TV is always a plus! Very warm welcome from the Host, would definitely return!

Our vacation in Amsterdam was perfect, thanks to David's superb apartment and service. Situated above the Albert Cuyp market in a central and safe neighborhood, it's within easy walking distance to Rembrandt Square and the metro, surrounded by excellent dining and shopping options. The apartment is beautifully designed, offering a warm and cozy retreat with efficient heating, even in zero-degree weather. It features separate toilet and shower rooms for added privacy and a well-equipped bathroom with both a shower and a bathtub that provides strong, hot water—a luxury in European apartments. David was exceptionally accommodating with our check-in and check-out times, adjusting them according to our flight schedules, which saved us from the rain on our departure day. The apartment includes a charming balcony overlooking the market where smoking is allowed. Even during our two-day trip to Paris, David arranged for cleaning services, refreshing the apartment for our return. He is a discreet yet attentive property manager. He provided excellent tips for local eateries and coffeeshops, all of which were spot on. The apartment is worth every penny, providing ample space and comfort for a couple. In conclusion, a personal note to the owner: David is an invaluable asset. Take good care of him; he is kind, reliable, and truly the best at what he does. Thank you for a perfect vacation!

There are no bad things I can say about the apartment. And yet if you really insist: Leading to the apartment are typical Dutch stairs, long, steep and narrow. Less convenient with a large suitcase, but it's really not a big tragedy. Another small thing - the apartment is located above a market, so there may be noise in the morning when the market is being set up and in the evening when the market is being dismantled. Personally, it didn't bother me at all, but if you are light sleepers, you might want to consider earplugs. But all this is nonsense - the apartment is perfect.

Simply everything about this place is gorgeous. It felt like a home from home. David is a friendly and warm host and keeps a beautiful space here. I haven't slept like I did on my trip in a long time, and that balcony!! We had to prise ourselves out each day and are already thinking of when we can come back!

good location...a bit noisy because of the market but didn't bother me...host was great lots of good info about the area.Good food everywhere around the market

A pleasure staying. Excellent location, clean, functional apartment. David the host was helpful and informative. Close to excellent restaurants.

The location is very good ,should enjoy more with the market downstairs, there are lots of restaurants downstairs and delicious.only one point is in the morning you would be wake up by the noisy of market ,of course if you get up earlier around 7am ,it shouldn’t be problem for you .landlord David and his wife are very nice people ,David always reply message in the first time and try to help you when you need 👍.had good experience with this apartment !

Location was the best part of this unit! We loved waking up each morning to explore the market below before wandering into the rest of the city. The space was also clean, spacious, and perfect for two.

Everything was great! Stairs are steep as other reviews mentioned, but the host helped us to carry our bags upstairs so it was not an issue!

We enjoyed the location in that it was in a very interesting part of the city with lots of restaurants and a wonderful market. The bed was very comfortable and the room was very clean.

There were many decorative items in the room taking up space that we could have used to unpack our suitcases and store food items (for our breakfast) during our six day stay. It would be great if the owner cleared those items out. Guest should also be aware that there is a huge flight of stairs up to the apartment and the market sets up each morning at around 7 AM and there can be noise while that is happening.

The host is just AMAZING! The apartment is so unique and has everything that you need . Although its in the market - super quiet. Highly recommended

The only minus is the stairs that are a bit longer than other apartments we are use to in Amsterdam but definitely worth it

The apartment was clean, comfortable and well appointed. The area is cool, vibrant and easy to navigate. David was an excellent host providing us with the kind of recommendations that only a well informed local can. This was my first trip and won’t be my last. Amsterdam is a wonderful place.

Good accommodation, clean and friendly. Good location, a bit noisy in the morning (market street) stairs to enter steep and high. Very good bed. Balcony !

There could be a microwave. Still waiting for the bill.

The place is nicely designed and is very cozy. You will have to walk the Dutch stairs but it's everywhere. We really enjoyed our stay there.

The noise in the morning form the market...you can literally hear the metal rumbling. If you have earplugs - please use them :)

The location for exploring Amsterdam is great, with plenty of the attractions within walking distance. The bed and pillows were comfy and the studio flat was very stylish. David the host was great at responding and was waiting at the apartment when we arrived to tell us about how everything worked. Lots of great bars and restaurants on your doorstep and a walk down the market is defo worth a visit

The stairs upto the apartment look more of a challenge than they actually are and I have been in other Amsterdam apartments with worse stairs.

The apartment is via steep stairs but has balcony and good view. Is fairly basic but we loved it. The location is excellent, great neighbourhood and very easy to get to from central station on #4 tram. Property manager David is great, such a helpful and capable guy.

Wonderful interior—loved the art. We’ll appointed with everything we needed.

We needed to have windows open at night to cool off the apartment, and it was very noisy starting at 6:15am when vendor began setting up the metal scaffolding for the booths.

Great location Great little balcony David, the host, was very helpful, especially with our bags & the steep stairs

The roadworks were a shame, but otherwise no complaints!

The apartment was fantastic. The location was excellent as it was only a short walk from the main sights but was far enough away so that evenings were quite. Our host David was excellent and incredibly helpful throughout our trip.

It was exceptionally hot during our stay so we were sleeping with the window open at night. This made the early morning market set up outside quite noisy but we are early risers anyway so it wasn't a problem. If the window was shut you couldn't hear anything and in most circumstances it wouldn't be as hot as it was when we were there.

The room was beautiful and the location was perfect! There’s lots of amazing street food in the market which is right outside the front door.

The stairs up to the apartment were very steep. Was fine for us but might not be suitable for all types of travellers.

Great location, good facility and some coffee in the room too. David was super responsive and helpful with suggestions and getting my suitcase up the stairs.

My experience at The Market Retreat was overall positive. My partner and I arrived to meet the enthusiastic (host) David upon arrival. He assisted us with our luggage and explained the house rules clearly, along with providing us with an information booklet. David also gave us some local tips and was happy to be in contact if we were in need of any help, which is always reassuring. Especially for first time visitors of the city. As for the accommodation, it was exactly how it is described in the advertisement. Spacious, lots of natural light with elegant (& comfortable) furniture and art. The bed was amazing and massive. All the general amenities were fine which was great. The markets in front of the accommodation was cool check out from the balcony as well as on foot. And not too loud either. If you close the window you can barely notice any sound outside. So no noise issues personally. As for the location itself. It is quite close to the heart of the city, so very convenient even if you can't ride a bike. There is really good food within a 5-10min walk radius as well, so keep that in mind. My favourite was the Ladybird Fried Chicken!! Although myself and my partner were fine going up and down the stairs, I can imagine it being difficult for people who need assistance or easy access, so do keep that in mind!! I highly recommend!

The host was excellent, couldn’t find any better. Kind, helpful and always on call if needed

The location, comfortable bed and design

huge comfortable bed, great location, aesthetically pleasing interior

nil

Fantastic location and a very nice/large studio apartment .

Nothing as everything was great.

Our trip was just one of those lovely trips where you have a great host. lovely accommodation. great location and it’s all just so charming. we did not realise we were located above such a popular market and the market was lovely to walk through. It was only on a wine and cheese canal cruise the guide told us to visit a great market and realised we were living on the street. we used the supermarket. The hummus stand forgotten it’s name. bought tulips. lovely meals from the vendors. The bed was so comfortable. Clean room. I love being in a room where you have ‘air’ plentiful from the large window/door to balcony. Great recommendations from host David. we already had one of the places on our list so it was nice to know a local recommended too. Greenwoods for breakfast and visited Coffee & Coconuts for coffee and cake. The market shop owners would greet us as we entered/left the building such a friendly experience for a little hello from shops either side if people saw you. The stairs wow. added to the Dutch charm worth the climb ha! I fell in love with Amsterdam. The Dutch just ooze cool. David you were a delightful to deal with. your energy is refreshing and it was a pleasure to deal with you. prompt check in and out. The message you sent the 2nd day to check if we were ok was a lovely touch. We have travelled the world and once your checked in not many hosts tend to check in via messages if they are not on site themselves. I would definitely stay here.

There is nothing that spoilt our trip we had a fault less stay in this lovely room however if I was to be particular I would need to mention market noise however I am a light sleeper and love my sleep. I did hear the market set up each morning but it didn’t spoil my morning. I still managed to sleep in. It didn’t last long. I would endure the market set up for the overall accommodation. The door once closed blocks out the general noise of the market. Just wonderful I am so glad I experienced Amsterdam in sunshine. during the week to experience it’s true culture before the weekend people arrived. The city is bright, leafy, trendy cafes. Gorgeous food. So many people asked if we were enjoying our time in the city so friendly!!! 11/10.

very clean and cozy , the apartment was confortable and located in the center of Amsterdam. David was responding as soon as we have a question and shares great recommendations to enjoy our stay!

Great place in a great location. Market is just outside front door and so many restaurants just around the corner. Unit very spacious and comfortable.

Stairs to unit very steep - but to be expected. No door on shower/bathtub area.

The perfect location to visit Amsterdam. Tram 4 will go cross main street to the central station, which seats close to everything you want to go. Also, David is a friendly and welcoming host. We feel so warm when he hosted us. He even helped us with carrying heavy luggage and taxi. It is definitely a wise choice to stay here.

No

the appartment was great! david and irene were very helpul, the location was perfect and near the Trum, so you could get anywhere at 10 minutes only.

the steam of water wasn't strong eanogh

Words can't describe how plesent our stay was! the apartment is located on a busy market with so much to offer. easy tram links 2 mins from your door to anywhere in the city. i could go on forever! will defiently be rebooking and staying here many more times in the near future! Very happy overall!

The stairs but I was the one carrying the suitcases lol Not a bad thing to say

The property was close to tram lines that lead to the centre and main land marks. David is also very helpful and friendly and was amazing throughout our stay, would highly recommend staying here it’s very cosy and the bed is very comfortable.

David is very helpful and quick response, the apartment is clean and is just right above Albert Cuypstraat.

Need to be careful when carrying luggage on steep staircase, and will be nice if there’s a full height mirror in room.

Great location, very clean, very comfortable king bed. David the host is very friendly and helpful

David was extremely helpful and always a available

full of art, beautiful to rest and admire the choice of decoration. very clean spaces, very comfortable bed.

neighbor was a noisy, it didn't bother us since we didn't spend a lot of time in the apartment.

Wow! What an incredible, clean apartment! Best location in town since it’s right on top of the local market where you can roam around and shop, have local and international snacks. Very easy to get to the city centre as well (10-15 minutes walk). The host goes the extra mile to tell you where to go for lunch and dinner and his recommendations where spot on! Pictures won’t do the apartment justice. Thank you David!

Nothing

The location was amazing! Gorgeous part of Amsterdam. Right above a street market, so lots of amazing food right on your doorstep. The host, David, was also fantastic - so helpful and had great recommendations for things to see / do / eat while in Amsterdam.

Nothing!

The place is beautiful, located in the heart of the De Pipe, very clean with a small balcony

No AC The stairs to the apartment ( but it's the same in other apartments as well)
