Old Mill Lodge, Seasonal Working Ostrich Farm & Restaurant, Oudtshoorn

We loved our stay. The rooms are basic but very clean. There were farm animals right outside the room that the kids loved playing with and location was great.

This is a lovely place to stay, right from the start we were welcomed by Riener then checked in by Anika who showed us to our room and gave us all the information we needed. The room was big, well equipped & spotlessly clean. We used the on site restaurant, the food was delicious, well presented and very reasonably priced. Breakfast is plentiful and tasty. This is a working ostrich farm and we were able to see 11 day old chick's as well as various other animals. The grounds are well kept and its just nice to spend a while walking round.

Reception and check in excellent. Renier took care of everything from laundry to car and trailer wash. Excellent restaurant.

Good large bed. It was quiet, has beautiful gardens with large variety of birds. Breakfast buffet was wide assorted and of good quality. Diner in the restaurant was good.

Hardly any adult ostriches. It looks more like a children's farm.

We really liked the place and facilities, there was a lot to keep the kids busy . The staff were very helpful and friendly.

The lodge is set in a very beautiful location, surrounded by greenery and nature, and conveniently located near the Cango Caves. The setting itself is definitely one of the strongest points of the property.

Unfortunately, the room was in need of significant maintenance and refurbishment. The air conditioning was not working, the refrigerator was clearly old and made a very loud noise, and the shower door was difficult to open and close. The shower head was also inadequate, with such a weak water flow that taking a proper shower was difficult. Another disappointing aspect was the bedding. The sheets were synthetic and, more importantly, there was no top sheet between the fitted sheet covering the mattress and the duvet. We raised this with the reception staff and were told that all duvets are washed after every guest change. We found this explanation rather surprising and, honestly, it left us with some doubts. Breakfast was also disappointing. There was a reasonable variety of food available, but unfortunately the overall quality was quite poor.

Leider hat unser Zimmer fürchterlich gestunken. Uns blieb nur der Umzug in ein anderes Hotel. Natürlich auf unsere Kosten. Wir sind nun seid 2 Wochen in Südafrika unterwegs & hier haben wir uns zum ersten Mal nicht willkommen und unwohl gefühlt.

Die Tiere sind schön für Kinder

Schlafsofa im Familienzimmer ist nicht nutzbar und eine absolute Zumutung. Unser Sohn musste notgedrungen darauf schlafen. Management reagiert nicht auf Anfragen, auch nach Abreise noch immer unbeantwortet , obwohl an der Rezeption zu dieser Jahreszeit nichts los war (Winter)

La struttura è un oasi di verde, ordinata, pulita, organizzata. Siamo stati accolti in modo impeccabile. Avendo prenotato il tour dei suricati al mattino presto, avremmo perso la colazione, invece la struttura ci ha offerto quella a sacco composta da: due uova sode, pancetta e salsicce con due fette di toast con formaggio, una bottiglietta di succo di frutta home made, arancia, yogurt, cereali, biscotti, the e caffè. Inoltre ci hanno dato la possibilità di restare in camera oltre l'orario del check out per consumare la colazione al sacco e darci un'ultima sistemata. La struttura dispone di diverse unità abitative pulitissime e dotate di ogni comfort. Ci sono 3 piscine, un laghetto, il torrente, struzzi, pony e conigli. Adattissimo per famiglie con bambini, ma anche per chi cerca relax. Struttura a soli 20 min dalle Cango Caves. C'è anche la zona tende per il campeggio, davvero ben fatte. Abbiamo deciso di cenare nel ristorante della struttura e abbiamo mangiato dell'ottima carne, cucinata davvero benissimo.

It’s was very cold. The air con (for heat) wasn’t working (although the manager offered 2 electric fans) they were sufficient and only warmed the bedrooms so the kitchen and lounge were very cold

Lighting in our tent could be better. Would have loved the option of a shower, but otherwise perfect facilities.

Good warm blankets .

Air in room came on but didn’t throw out warm air. The neighbour in no 2 had their air con on all night which turned every 45 mins and stayed on for 15 mins. Very loud motor. Lumpy duvet inner. One Bedside lamp not plugged in on arrival. Not a polite man at reception front desk on arrival I’m afraid … he did let us look at the two rooms but actually we took D3 and Petra took the dam room in our place as our 4th guest did not arrive. Over cooked hot breakfast food the next morning.

De kamers waren zeer basis terwijl in de omschrijving een luxe appartement staat! Koud , en ik heb maar 4 struisvogels gezien. Het was wel winter dus misschien dat het daar aan lag.

Het eten in het restaurant was heerlijk.

De cottage 1 was vreselijk. Het bed wiebelde aan alle kanten, gesprongen waterfles in koelkast, heel veel schimmel en zowel dode als levende vliegjes.

Very nice to see the heritage of the farm and restaurant.

The scenery are nice and lots of things to do for children. Breakfast was fair, but the exact same every day.

Our river side tent was not in a good condition. All the window ties were broken and we were unable to open any windows. Carpets smelled damp. It was ice cold inside at night, esp. in the bathroom, which had no insulation from outside. Not recommended for winter. Old basic terrestrial TV: might as well remove it. No barrier to keep pets inside or close to tent.

Qua meubilair en aankleding was het best outdated (maar dat hadden we op de fotos vooraf al geconstateerd)

Los niños se lo pasaron genial con los animales. Las safari tents son divertidas y algunos antílopes bajan a merodear por los alrededores.

La ropa de cama húmeda y vieja. Mi mujer no consintió taparse (y era invierno). Una ropita de cama nueva no cuesta tanto...

The setting is really lovely as are the staff.

The rooms have 100 polyester everything, old blinds let in security lights. The rooms feel like a hospital room couldn’t make them uglier if you tried.

Just as tips: Breakfast seemed substandard… no scrambled egg/ omelet option or mushrooms for example. Bedding seemed used to many times - base sheet pulled off mattress /size issue as corners is tearing. Dust on bedside table. Bugs in drawers of table under TV. Broken knob of drawer found in bedside table - an easy fix. No microwave - difficult with baby. Would like a mug for coffee - small / dated cup&saucer.

L'endroit au calme. Malheureusement il a plu quand nous y étions en juillet et il faisait très froid dans l'hébergement. Les animaux en semi liberté (canards, oies, lapins) ont fait le bonheur des enfants et ado.

Nous pensions voir plus d'autruches, 4 autruches étaient présentes sur la propriété

Very friendly Staff. beautiful location, lovely rooms with nice touches added. fabulous food (we had the smoked Ostrich pizza,which was superb and the Eland, which is the best meat I've eaten, cooked perfectly, melted in my mouth. the rice & veg were also delicious) Lots to do there for guests staying a few days.

Everything was supplied, but things are old and very tired, broken toilets, broken air conditioners, one room was so cold, otherwise clean and tidy

The tent set up was lovely and warm but the bathroom isn’t ideal. Zip to bathroom only closed half way so one of us had to leave the tent while’s the other was in the loo. Breakfast could have more egg options.

Het was een geweldige locatie om met de kinderen te verblijven. Het ontbijt was gevarieerd en lekker. De manager was ontzettend vriendelijk. We zijn ook heel tevreden over de laundry-service.

Een keerborstel in de kamer zou handig geweest zijn. En een elektrisch deken zou een fijne meerwaarde zijn tijdens de koude winternachten. Wij hadden gelukkig onze warmwaterkruiken bij.

The breakfast is amazing. The Old Mill is beautiful and peaceful the nature of the river is outstanding it brings calmness.

Feeding the animals

The property was absolutely beautiful!! My child loved seeing the animals and feeding the bunnies. The fact that we were overlooking the dam was amaizing.

The interior of our room was very basic and the layout not so good. It would be better to have all the bathroom things together and a bit separated from the room. Also the sleeper couch for the kids were a bit hard to sleep on.

We had a fantastic stay at Old Mill Ostrich Farm, just outside Oudtshoorn. The setting is beautiful, with breathtaking mountain views and a peaceful atmosphere. One of the highlights was seeing the farm animals right from our balcony. We enjoyed watching the ostriches, cows, ponies, rabbits, and sheep, and it was such a special experience to feed them and even give them a gentle pat. We also loved having a barbecue on our balcony while taking in the stunning scenery. The swimming pool looked fantastic and would be perfect for cooling off during the summer months. It was a relaxing and memorable stay, and we would happily recommend it to anyone visiting the area. We would definitely love to return!

The space, there is no restrictions to what you can access, the staff is friendly and very welcoming.

Once or twice room service did not being the sugar to the room when we requested and cleaning was not done the day before we left. One of the doors by the balcony doesnt close shut so when it rained water dripped in the house.

Nothing I didn't like. I would just suggest that they add a broom for the room. The grass being wet led to us tracking in a lot of grass cuttings and leaves. I would have liked to sweep te room and not leave it with all the grass and leaves inside.

Lovely farm atmosphere with lot of animals (rabbits, geese, turkeys, ostriches,...). First class restaurant with unique menu.

The room shows signs of ageing but is still comfortable with everything one needs.

Our room smelled like someone smoked in the room. We had a little braai, but with no basic braai tongs. No broom of any kind, not everyone can do room service every day. Blankets in cupboard were dirty, found chips and dirt/food stains on them. Please wash them. Pillows were in very bad condition

Les bébés autruches ne sont pas là l'hiver, nous nous attendions à en voir (juin).

Magnifique, nous étions dans la chambre au bord d un petit lac avec terrasse. La chambre était super sympa, le petit déjeuner parfait et le repas aussi. Si vous êtes avec un enfant c'est l'endroit idéal car avec tout ces animaux c'est le top. Vous pouvez rentrer dans l'enclos où il y a les lapins, dindons et canards, et leurs donner a manger.

Cold evenings in June, air condition does not give off warm air, only cold. Some rooms not equipped well for self catering, no table and chairs indoors, too cold for outside eating.

Nothing as the road to the facility was blocked due to rock fall and flooding I called to try get alternative route or reschedule booking, staff totally unhelpful and could not give alternatives merely referred me to cancellation policy, no refund,no alternative or reschedule even though this was a natural disaster.

Everything about this place as staff were the most unaccommodating and unsympathetic we have experienced even though I called and we had travelled 12 hours already with 2 small kids.

Die Lodge ist sehr weitläufig und schön angelegt. Die sehr vielen Hasen durften frei rumlaufen und das fanden wir sehr schön.

Leider waren zu unserer Zeit nur 6 Strausse auf der Farm. Hier wäre eine Info in der Beschreibung hilfreich. Die Strausse sind nur im SA Sommer auf der Farm.

Beautiful farm between oudtshoorn and the Groot Swartberg Nature Reserve. Excellent food, ostrichs and lots of other animals. Very enjoyable stay!

Wasn't quite clear initially which of the beautiful "Safari Tents" we were staying at, but all sorted out to everyones happiness.
