De Opstal Country Lodge

It was like our home away from home, with added extra's. We felt welcome and comfortable in the space. Our fireplace was lit to warm our cottage before we returned back from dinner. The breakfast was fresh and made on the spot, and we were served like royalty. Dinner at the restaurant was absolutely delicious and massive value for money!

The manager on duty (Michael) is a gem and went out of his way to assist.

Very good location, 10km from Oudtshoorn on a farm. Room and bathroom very spacious and has a patio to enjoy a sundowner. Breakfast and dinner was exceptional. We really enjoyed our 3 night stay. Staff very friendly and helpful.

We were very impressed with the staff the welcome Coffee and cake. It's a pity our stay wasn't longer. Definitely would go back and recommend it to friends and family.

Für mich die schöneste Unterkunft auf unserer Reise durch Südafrika. Es sind vor allem die Zimmer die uns so sehr gefallen. Jeder Zimmer auf dieser Lodge ist anders, einzigartig, gross und sauber. Das Frühstück ist sehr gut und lässt keine Wünsche offen. Der Service ist Einzigartig. Wir bekamen sogar noch Tipp für gute Restaurants in Stellenbosch wo unsere nach Station war.

We were super happy with the location and the hospitality. If you want to get an authentic afrikaans boer experience, de opstal is the place to go. The host welcomed us warmly and even helped us create a special birthday for one of the guys. All in all, very enjoyable stay and surely won‘t be the last one!

A great place to stay. Beautiful property, the staff and owners are all very friendly and helpful. Lovely pool area to relax. Very nice breakfast and dinner. Safe parking on site. Would definitely recommend.

Das Hotel liegt nahe bei den cango caves.

Nicht die gebuchte Zimmerkategorie bekommen, obwohl es bei der Buchung bei Booking bestätigt wurde. Auch die bei booking hinterlegte Option der Halbpension wurde auf Nachfrage von der Direktionsleitung abgelehnt. Wir wurden auf das hoteleigene und deutlich teurere Menü sowie externe Lokalitäten verwiesen. Die Entfernung zum nächsten Lokal war mindestens 4 km entfernt. Der Pool war nicht gereinigt, beim Duschen lief das Wasser aus der Dusche und überschwemmte den Boden (defekte Duschkabine). Ein Bademantel war dreckig, viele braune Flecken. Das Zimmer hatte eine schöne Terrasse, aber leider weder Stühle zum Verweilen. Die Klimaanlage funktionierte auch nicht.

It was a peaceful setting in the countryside. Beautiful, well taken care of property with the most beautiful pool. Really great restaurant that serve the most delicious food. The staff are exceptional as well, they make you feel at home and special and every single guest is treated like this. The owner took the time to talk to all the guests in the restaurant at every meal and she even offered to cook our one year old something for dinner and went ahead and did it. She stole our little girl’s heart and made our stay even more special. This really is a home away from home…such a treat!

Sehr sichere, schöne und großzügig angelegte Lodge mit ungewöhnlichem Garten, Pool und tollen Räumlichkeiten. Die Angestellten sind herzlich und auch wenn mal etwas schief geht sofort zur Stelle. Absolute Empfehlung!

Great location

We drove for hours to find the restaurant was closed so had to get back in the car again the hostess did help us find food at another resort which was kind, but it would have been nice to know it was closed as the property is not near the town .

Large comfortable rooms and great breakfasts

Pool and pool towels were dirty. Very disappointing as the plan was to spend afternoon at the pool. Restaurant was closed with no notice. We specifically travelled to stay at this spot as we loved our times here more than a decade ago! The owners had passion and loved the place! It’s become very run down.

Facilities in the room could have been beter : The single bed had no bedlamp. The floor lamp was not plugged in (no power socket close by). The couches are very low on the ground, older people struggle to sit and get up. The TV didn't work. There can be a table next to the fridge cupboard to put things down. The garden/footpath lights were off the evening and it was difficult to see when walking back to the room

From the moment we drive into OPSTAL we knew we had found a DIAMOND. What a place! From arrival being greeted with a beautiful smile and happy helpful staff. The property is gorgeous and even has a chapel. A gorgeous pool and original Dutch architecture - I highly, highly recommend this jewel - breakfast incredible. Rooms spacious and spectacular!

Es war einfach alles umwerfend, die Herzlichkeit von Albertus und seiner Frau Matilda, das mit so viel Liebe eingerichtete Zimmer, die komplette Anlage, nach unserer Meinung 5 Sterne plus. Wir sind zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt schon fast vier Wochen in SA unterweges und hatten dementsprechend bereits viele Übernachtungen, aber De Opstal Country Lodge hat uns mit Abstand am besten gefallen!!

Die persönliche Betreuung durch die Gastgeber und die private Atmosphäre der Lodge waren herausragend und wir haben uns überaus wohl gefühlt. Die Anlage ist sehr gepflegt, die Ausstattung der Zimmer bzw. Häuser ist traditionell, gemütlich und geschmackvoll. Der Service war in jeder Hinsicht persönlich, aufmerksam und zugewandt. Wir waren auf der Durchreise, wären aber gern länger geblieben. Wir haben auch das Abendessen dort genossen und es war ein sehr stimmungsvoller Abend mit leckeren regionalen Spezialitäten, die hervorragend zubereitet wurden. Besonders hervorzuheben ist die persönliche Betreuung durch Mathilda und Albertes.

The welcome was very sincere and we were made to feel very at home. It has a lovely pool area and a bit of a community feel about the place as there are many buildings, containing the rooms, scattered around the grounds. Breakfast and evening meal was most satisfying and didn't leave us needing anything else to eat. This place hosts weddings and other events as well as the passer through. Very handy for Cango caves.

It was an amazing experience for us, the decorations, the atmosphere and the service by Emily, she is so warm and caring.

Various requests went unserved (let us bring you a appetiser to welcome you, we will bring you wood for the room fire place), the ostrich pate that made this place super well known non existent but on the menu, just feels like the love is gone.

We met Mathilda at another of her properties in in Stellenbosch, in 2018 - and always wanted to stay at Die Opstal, after that. She's a remarkable woman, and we never forgot the effect she had on us then! Die Opstal is a BEAUTIFUL property, run by beautiful people!. We were the only guests on the night we stayed - but they still went out of their way to prepare the most incredible dinner and breakfast for us. It was well worth the big detour on our roadtrip, to finally get to experience Die Opstal... We HIGHLY recommend staying here....

Unsafe, Unhygienic, and Terrible Service – Not Recommended. Our stay at De Opstal was a huge disappointment. Although the room was spacious, there were serious issues that made our stay not only unpleasant but, more importantly, unsafe. Unsafe Baby Cot & No Solution Provided The biggest issue was the baby cot (see attached photo). It was placed on high legs, had low sides, and the base could not be lowered. Our 16-month-old baby, who can stand, was at serious risk of falling out. We immediately raised this concern and remained constructive at all times, requesting either another baby cot or even a different room. Unfortunately, no solution was offered—we simply had to deal with it. Letting our child sleep in a regular bed was not an option for us, which caused a lot of stress. Severe Fly Infestation & Unhygienic Conditions On top of that, the room was infested with an extreme number of flies (see attached photos)—both dead and alive—throughout all areas. This was not just a few annoying flies but a full-blown infestation. The staff offered to spray the room with insect repellent. While we reluctantly agreed, we felt very uncomfortable about it. Our baby had to sleep there shortly after, and my wife is pregnant, so we were deeply concerned about the effects of the toxic spray on her and our unborn child. Untrustworthy & Non-Existent Customer Service Since our daughter’s and unborn baby’s health is our top priority, we immediately decided to leave the accommodation and book another stay elsewhere. We did not spend a single moment in the room. Upon departure, the receptionist assured us that we would receive a full refund. Three days after leaving, I contacted the accommodation to ask about the refund. At first, I received no response. After sending a follow-up message the next day, I was finally told that there would be no refund after all.

Room big and spacious, clean, all the amenities available. Beautiful location. On arrival, Host was very nice and welcoming. Wish we could have stayed longer.

De Opstal Country Lodge is a beautiful, romantic retreat just outside of Oudtshoorn - an ideal location for those seeking peace and quiet. While the city itself didn’t really vibe with us, we did enjoy our stay (& the fantastic Ebony & Ivory restaurant nearby). The lodge has spacious rooms and very good facilities, and while the furnishings are a bit old-school, that’s part of its original charm. If you’re into modern minimalism, this might not be your place, but if you appreciate a warm, character-filled country-style stay, you’ll love it here. A real highlight was the beautiful garden - an oasis of greenery and tranquility with lots of birds in it. But what truly stands out is the dedication of the staff and owners. They are incredibly engaged, friendly, and go out of their way to ensure an exceptional stay, handling even personal matters spontaneously and with care. You can feel that a lot of passion has been put into running this place. The WiFi was okay but sometimes slow, so if you need to work (as we did), you’ll want to have a good mobile data bundle. Overall, a charming and welcoming lodge, made special by its wonderful hospitality, peaceful atmosphere, and lush garden retreat.

As the floor in our accommodation had recently been polished (?), it smelled a little of the product used.

We found ourselves rather isolated as it was very quiet (a long way from town) with hardly any other guests. Very big dining room with only us and another couple in it.

Bed was quite short - my husbands legs went over end of bed There had been a wedding the day before and all the glasses were still piled up and left all day/night. All the staff seemed to have the day off when we arrived. Bar and Restaurant were closed - we did know about the restaurant as they had informed us and booked us a table at Buffelsdrift Game Lodge (which was lovely) but didn't realise the bar would also be shut so couldn't get any drinks. We also had no glasses in our rooms to have our own drinks and had to go searching for glasses at the wedding venue. My personal view is that establishments should be able to cater for the wedding AND provide staffing, facilities for new guests arriving the following day. We are paying guests and should not get a sub standard experience because of someone else's event the day before Breakfast was average and of lower quality than all the other places we stayed at during our 3 weeks in South Africa

It was our second stay at this lovely place and we enjoyed it again. The accommodations are situated amidst a nicely landscaped garden and are complemented by restaurant, bar, wedding chapel and event facilities. The spacious rooms with heritage interior created an invitingly atmosphere and the friendly staff contributed to an overall very pleasant stay.

Staff was amazing! Location is stunning. The pictures don't do the hotel justice, because in real life it is 10x better than in the photos. The food was increíble! Go for the ostrich steak :)

Territory of lodge is large and beautiful.

It was offered a dinner from lodge, in meal plan per person was included bread and ostrich patt, ostrich steak, salad and ice cream, after a long trip we decided to take it, but how we was surprised that dinner price was per person, and the dish is one for everyone, for example just small plate of salad for four persons, it’s really strange for me, same with ice cream. I thing it’s overpriced offer from hotel side.

De Opstal was an amazing place to stay, close to all attractions in Oudtshoorn. The hospitality was amazing, excellent rooms, great breakfast in an amazing setting.

A amazing place to stay, with family history of the area eight generations. Not to missed. We loved the whole experience of staying in De Opstal Country Lodge. Our room was full of character over looking the most beautiful gardens. Breakfast amazing, try the home made marmalade. All staff more than expected.
