A beautiful home with a lovely balcony just outside the two rooms overlooking the road - equipped with 2 hammocks & a table for breakfast/dinner. The family are absolutely lovely & made us feel very very welcome. We came for the jungle trekking - which was incredible - but we could have easily stayed for a few more nights here. The rooms were very clean, the shower warm, good toilets, delicious breakfast. Would recommend to anyone visiting Bukit Lawang.

Nothing negative to say. The rooms are basic but exactly what you need & expect for the price. Occasional from monkeys on the roof just added to our experience.

Emma and yakob were awesome. Treat you very well. Always smiley and funny. We did the 3d2n tour through them. Was amazing!

La gentillesse de Yakup et sa femme, ils ont pu organiser un transport partagé depuis l'aéroport à un prix avantageux et un trek sur 2 jours avec 3 excellents guides ! La chambre est grande et la salle de bain est neuve. L'emplacement proche des commerces et des restaurants. Se lever le matin avec les singes en face de sa chambre 😊

Le souci c'est que la rue est extrêmement passante avec scooter et tuk tuk et que c'est un chalet en bambou juste au-dessus de la boutique des hôtes, donc absolument pas insonorisé. Disons que ce n'est pas une étape pour se reposer si comme moi, vous vous couchez tôt et appréciez pouvoir dormir le matin après 2 longues journées de trek. J'ai trouvé que le petit déjeuner et le prix de la bouteille d'eau étaient élevés par rapport aux prix locaux (la bouteille d'eau est vendue deux fois moins cher à 50 mètres)...

Sama Sama makes you feel at home as soon as you step through the door. It is comfortable, convenient and overall the perfect stay. We opted for the one day trek and our two guides were amazing! Our transportation from the airport and onward was incredibly smooth and easy (thanks Dedek!). If you are planning on visiting Bukit Lawang, stay with Sama Sama!

Meine Zeit bei Ema, Yakup und ihren Kindern war eines der absoluten Highlights meiner Reise durch Sumatra. Vom ersten Moment an wurde ich unglaublich herzlich empfangen. Sie haben dafür gesorgt, dass ich mich rundum wohl und willkommen gefühlt habe. Auch haben sie alles für mich organisiert: Flughafen-Transfer, Dschungel-Trekking, Tagesausflug zur Amorphophallus, Weiterfahrt nach Berastagi.. Ema hat leckeres Frühstück für mich zubereitet und mich zu einem tollen Warung mit lokalen Köstlichkeiten mitgenommen. Ich habe eine 2 Nächte/3 Tages Tour im Dschungel gemacht und fand alles daran toll! Meine Guides Olky und Prem waren großartig, so auch die Gruppe, die unser Essen zubereitet hat. Nächstes Mal würde ich noch länger unterwegs sein wollen.

Yakup and his family were fantastic - we were made to feel at home INSTANTLY! Amazing communication with us as we navigated from Medan to Bukit Lawang and greeted us with warmth. The room looked exactly like the photos and are incredibly good value for money. We did the day tour with Tommy who looked after us well, showed us many orangutans, monkeys and shared his knowledge of the environment with us. I can’t remember the exact price but it was really good value for money and we were able to ride back through the village down the river on the tubes/tires to finish our day and go for a swim. We had a lovely stay here and even got to name the cat, Prince Harry, and keep our key ring for the room (as we mentioned we liked it)!

This has been the best stay we’ve had so far throughout our travels in South East Asia. Yakup and his wife helped us so much and were so kind to us from the start. The jungle trek with Yakup was amazing. We saw so many orangutans as well as other wildlife and was the most incredibly experience. Tubing down the river was so refreshing and included in the price. Before our trek, Yakup’s wife made us a delicious breakfast accompanied by a coffee, which fuelled us for the beginning of the trek, followed by incredible food and fruit throughout the rest of the day. The location is amazing. you’re pretty much in the centre so have a very easy walk to either side of the village. You can visit various caves, cafe’s, bars, as well as relax by the river which is a 30 second walk away. We would highly recommend this place!

Very nice simple wooden room. Bed with mosquito net. The owner is a nice humble guy who supports the local village and nature, e.g. by giving work to people who might otherwise do poaching. He offers great jungle trip to see orangutans. I recommend the room and also the trip, I enjoyed it to the fullest.

Akomodasinya spektakuler, dengan segala yang Anda butuhkan. Sangat bersih. Pemiliknya sangat ramah dan membantu. Selalu memperhatikan untuk membuat masa inap menjadi pengalaman terbaik. Lokasinya fantastis, dekat dengan restoran dan kafe, serta dekat dengan sungai. Kami melakukan trekking seharian bersama pemilik akomodasi dan itu adalah salah satu pengalaman terbaik dalam hidup kami. Dia adalah pemandu bintang 5, menjelaskan segala sesuatu tentang orangutan dan habitat alami mereka, serta hewan lain di hutan. Makan siang dan buah-buahan eksotisnya sangat lezat, dan makan di hutan adalah pengalaman yang unik. Sebagai penutup, perjalanan menuruni lereng adalah puncaknya, dan arung jeram di sungai benar-benar menegangkan. Kami menyukai Bukit Lawang, tetapi bagian terbaiknya adalah menemukan akomodasi ini dan orang-orang bintang 5 ini. Terima kasih banyak untuk semuanya.

Homestay très bien situé dans Bukit Lawang avec plein d'endroits pour manger très local mais j'ai toujours mangé au même (y compris les petits-déjeuners) à 2 min à pied. La chambre a une très belle terrasse avec table pour manger et hamacs. Au calme. La chambre est très simple mais propre et confortable. Eau froide certes mais pas très grave. Les propriétaires sont super accueillants et ont tout organisé pour moi très très bien. Mon arrivée depuis l'aéroport, le trek de 2j /1 nuit dans la jungle (magnifique expérience) et transfert vers Berastagi. Tout s'est très bien passé et je recommande cette homestay à 100%. Merci Ema pour tout !

Tour was great! Plenty of orangutan sightings, guides were perfect and the food was incredible! Trek harder than expected but so worth it. The homestay is also a great location and communication is great. Arranged pick up and drop off from Medan too, appreciated that a lot.

Wir hatten einen tollen Aufenthalt in Sama sama Homestay & Trekking. Wir haben 3 Nächte gebucht und waren davon eine Nacht auf der Djungeltour. Diese haben wir direkt mit Sama sama gebucht. Jakub (unser Guide und Vermieter der Unterkunft) war unglaublich freundlich und immer gut drauf. Wir haben die 2 Tage, eine Nacht Djungeltrekking tour gemacht, welche ein Highlight unserer ganzen Reise war. Der Aufenthalt in Bukit Lawang bei Jakub und Sama sama homestay & Trekking war eine unglaubliche Erfahrung, ich kann die Unterkunft und genauso die Trekking tour von Herzen empfehlen. Wir werden auf jeden Fall wieder kommen.

The owner is very nice. He organised everything: the trek (with a very good agency), a bus ticket to lac Toba and help me to come from Medan. The homestay is in the centre of Bukit lawang. The room has a large terrasse. Very good quality for the price.

オーナーがフレンドリーで優しい。 部屋はファン付きで、4月初旬だと暑くなかった。 トレッキングに行っている間、荷物を預かってくれた。 The owner is very kind and friendly. The room has a fan, which was more than enough for early April. They also offer luggage storage while you're away on a jungle trek.

水シャワーだが気にはならなかった。 It was a cold shower, but I didn't mind it.

Good location, on main street. Very nice host and his wife. Very good contact before travel to Sumatra, good price for transfer from the airport Trekking with Yakup (host), fulfill my expecattions. We met orangutans and few other monkeys, food cooked by Yakup and his friend in camp in the middle of jungle was great. Night without electricity and wifi was nice experience. Also rafting was great experience

The location was ideal. Hosts were nice and kind. Very accessible to village and river. Hiking experience was good. Value of money. There are very good spots and cafes nearby.

There was no hot water (but very clean bathroom and very affordable so not complaining) Hiking was in off season so there were no people to socialise.

The lovely couple leaves me with sufficient personal space while availing themselves readily when I needed assistance. Its location opposite the visitor centre makes for easy navigation, pickup convenience, and ease of mind. Great starting point to explore the surrounding.

Given its prime location, many vehicles especially motorbikes pass by - can be a little noisy.

Exceptional hospitality, guidance, and support from the family made my stay unforgettable. During our animal observations, we explored the jungle in ways no organized tour could offer, while working on a photography project aimed at raising awareness of local species—including the often-overlooked butterflies that play a vital role in maintaining the flora—and promoting sustainable tourism. Thanks to Yakup, I also gained a deep insight into rural life and agriculture beyond Bukit Lawang. The room and facilities are practical and well-equipped, providing everything needed for a safe and comfortable stay. At the same time, they offer a genuine sense of being close to nature. The mosquito net kept insects out, and the property is located near restaurants serving traditional Indonesian food. This place inspires something far deeper than journeys—a sense of responsibility for the forest, as it gives you so much in return.

Thank you again for your kindness and hospitality in your home for my short time in Bukit Lawang. You have been very helpful with the trek information (best experience so far in SE Asia), shuttle service or simply sharing a small talk together room is perfect and you feel at home. My stay was wonderful. I was staying in a room in front of the river and it was quiet at night. The commodity are pretty basic but for the price it was really good and clean. The host help me out to book an awesome jungle trekk 2days/one night for a very good price, and also transport to my next destination, when I came back. Him and his family were lovely. He also brought me to the store a few times on his motorbike to give me an hand with what I needed, and I appreciate it a lot.

I didn’t have internet in the room, because I was a bit further on the river side. Only could get it at the reception. So it depends where your room is located. But then again I was really tired, so not a big deal.

​I couldn't be happier with my choice to stay at Sama Sama Homestay in Bukit Lawang for my first time in Sumatra, Indonesia. The four nights I spent there were filled with genuine warmth and incredibly welcoming hospitality. A huge thank you to Ema and Yakub for making me feel so at home and for being so helpful throughout my stay.

Es wurde alles für mich organisiert, die Fahrt vom Flughafen bis nach Bukit Lawang, die tolle Trekking Tour, das Gepäck könnte währenddessen im Zimmer bleiben, die Weiterfahrt nach Berastagi. Man konnte alles fragen. Konnte sogar ein kleines Frühstück bestellen. Sehr nette Besitzer! Vermittlung der besten Guides für die Dschungel Tour!! Sehr zentral gelegen, alles fußläufig erreichbar. Hat alles super geklappt! Das Zimmer einfach, aber ausreichend, es gab einen Balkon mit einer Hängematte zum Entspannen.

Es war ein wenig laut durch die zentrale Lage. Die Scooter sind immer zu hören.

The pics don’t match reality, I am glad I was upgraded without any charge but on the last day I wanted to stay one more night and they said I had to stay in another room I didn’t really feel comfortable. Plus there was also a mix-up with the transportation.

We hebben bij Sama Sama overnacht omdat we ook via Sama Sama een jungletrekking hadden geboekt. We hebben een geweldige trekking gedaan onder begeleiding van de geweldige lokale gids Irpan. Hij heeft een enorme kennis van de natuur. Yakup is behulpzaam in het vinden van oplossingen: de taxi naar het vliegveld was goed geregeld en het tubben met zijn allen was hilarisch. Gezellig dat de zoon van Yakup ook meeging. Emma bereidt in de ochtend een prima ontbijt. Aan het barretje kan je lekker hangen, koffie drinken en wat kletsen. Omdat het 's nachts warm was en er geen airconditioning aanwezig was, was het ook warm in de slaapkamers. Maar dat wisten we van te voren. Sama Sama is een fijn onderkomen en je kunt ervan op aan dat Yakup een goede lokale gids regelt voor de jungletrekking.

The owners are very friendly and went out of their way to be accommodating to us. We arranged our three day trek through them and it was really amazing (we had udin, Ari and Bess). The rooms are simple but have a fan so it doesn't get hot through the night. There's a nice shared area for the two rooms that has a table, hammocks and view of the monkeys in a nearby tree. It's a close walk to the river and shops/restaurants (1-5 minutes). The family also cooks a very tasty omelette for breakfast too.

Contratamos una excursión de 2 días/1 noche en la selva para ver orangutanes y la experiencia fue increíble, principalmente gracias a nuestro guía Ipul, un auténtico conocedor de la selva.

Habíamos contratado 3 noches en este alojamiento, al margen del trekking. Cuál es mi sorpresa cuándo al llegar nos dicen que nos tenemos que alojar en una habitación de otro establecimiento porque unos de sus clientes han decidido quedarse una noche más. En principio no nos importa porque ellos lo gestionan todo, sin embargo la segunda noche coincidía con nuestra noche en la selva, y queríamos dejar las maletas en la habitación (que habíamos pagado!), pero Yakup nos dijo que mejor dejarlas en su alojamiento (el original, por el que habíamos pagado) PAGÁNDOLES UN EXTRA! Pues para mejorar todo, al volver del trekking de dos días en la selva, tampoco teníamos habitación en su alojamiento, y nos volvió a derivar a otro sitio. Conclusión, contratamos este alojamiento y no dormimos ni un día en él, además no tuvieron la decencia ni de guardarnos las maletas gratis. Una vergüenza.

Yakup the owner of the Homestay is very friendly and helpful. Also his wife helped us a lot. For example breakfast and laundry. If you would like to do a jungle trek I highly recommend this place. Yakup organizes a car from the airport to Burkit Lawang it you want to. He also organized the guide to the Jungle trek. Our guides Josh and Moka were very friendly and experienced. We saw a lot of monkeys and orangutans. Definitely bring your camera for this jungle trek. All in all a very good and heartily enjoyable Homestay. Definitely recommend it!

I had a wonderful stay at Sama Sama Homestay in Bukit Lawang! Jakub and Ema were incredibly welcoming and always happy to help with anything I needed. From the moment I arrived, they made me feel completely at home. The bed was really comfortable, and the WiFi was reliable—perfect for staying connected while relaxing in the jungle. Every morning, Ema prepared a delicious breakfast, which was such a lovely way to start the day. The whole atmosphere was warm and friendly, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Bukit Lawang!

A real surprise find, Sama-Sama Homestay ended up being our favourite space we stayed in during our time in North Sumatra. Yakup and Ema were incredibly kind and gracious hosts, they made themselves available to help with any queries we had and made our time in Bukit Lawang so much nicer. The location was phenomenal, right by the river and made it incredibly easy to access other parts of the town, our stay was comfortable and pleasant. While the room itself is simple, there is a lovely decking area with a table and two hammocks that provided ample relaxation space during the days and evenings, and was definitely made the most of. Yakup helped to arrange a camping trek into the local jungle, which turned out to be a fantastic experience. We did a two day one night excursion (2D1N) and our guides, Kamal and Toni, were a wealth of knowledge on the local flora and fauna but also incredibly kind and conversational. They took us through all kinds of areas to spot orangutans, and the provided fruits and meal were of an incredibly high standard. Definitely raised the bar for what constitutes camping food! The final rafting ride down the river through the village was wonderful fun, would recommend you invest in a waterproof camera to capture that! All in all I would recommend Sama-Sama to anyone and everyone. The kindness and support of the hosts made our stay a breeze, and they were also kind enough to pass on local recommendations for food and laundry, extending our enjoyment to other places too. We'd absolutely look at booking with them if we are in the area again.

Yakup and Ema, and their 2 lovely children Alfa and Ataa (apologies if i got spellings wrong!!) were incredible hosts, super kind, welcoming, helpful and friendly. Loved staying here, Yakup arranged my trek into the jungle and saw orangutans and so much other incredible wildlife. Had an amazing time will def stay again if I make it back to Indonesia, highly reccomend!

What an amazing place! Yakub and his wife Emma are the best hosts you can imagine. We stayed for one night at the homestay and they took care of our airport transfer. Yakub and Emma are really friendly and are nice to chat with at the bar. They also have 2 lovely little sons. We booked the 3 day 2 night jungle trek at the homestay. This was an amazing experience. With a very experienced jungle guide named Tommy Hendrix we did the trek. Everything is arranged for. They make sure there is enough water at the camp, there is fruit, lunch, dinner, coffe, tea and breakfest. We spotted a lot of Orang Utans, Thomas Langurs, Longtail Macaques, Tucans and a turtle. At night we went fishing and hunting for lobsters in the river. The 3 days were too short because we would have loved to stay longer. We will be back!!! Yakub, Emma and Tommy, Thank you so much. All was perfect ! I recommend 100000 % this homestay. Yakup, Emma and their little family are really friendly and welcoming, always with the smile and good conversation. I was like at home. The location is very central and closest to the tourist bus. Emma can cook breakfast also. The owners organize all for you, we did the 3 days/2 nights jungle trek with Yakup and his friend (the cooker) and it was perfect. Yakup knows and explains many things about the jungle, he takes time to walk and look for the orang outans, to give the best experience for the customers. The food was amazing! We were only 2 guests, so it was like a private tour! Terima kasih for all, i will remember this experience for a long time🙏

Room was clean and was next to the jungle so who want to go for jungle trek it is the best where you can stay. Yakup and Ema are the best. They are so kind. Take earplugs if you can because sometimes can be in the morning loudly outside because of animals and bikes but nothings bad because the position is really good.

This homestay was simple, but very clean and is situated directly at the entrance to Bukit Lawang. In the night you can here the rain on the roof for a good sleep and in the morning you can see some macaque monkeys in the trees playing with each other. Good and cheap restaurants are very near as well as a good laundry. We booked a 3 days 2 nights jungle tour at this homestay to a reasonable price and this tour was fantastic. Tommie, our guide, chose a sporty but quiet route for us where only a few other people were around. He is very friendly and is very skilled in finding the different monkey types. He knows the jungle very well. During the trip we were able to see nearly all monkey types that live in the national park. Because of the route he chose, we even had the opportunity to observe an orang-utan mother with its newborn in the trees just by ourselves for a long time.The food our porter cooked for us tasted amazing with a lot of fruit and variety. All in all we liked our stay here a lot and with the owner and his team we had the feeling to buy a trip with people who care for the jungle and its animals.

In the morning Bukit Lawang gets busy, so it can be a little loud. The rooms had no mosquito net.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Sama Sama Homestay. Yakub & Ema were the perfect host's. The room was a good size, the mattress & pillow were both clean & comfortable. The shower wasn't powerful or hot but not many are in Indonesia especially at this price. We had a lovely balcony which we used everyday. Sama Sama homestay is at the main hub of the village & very close to the river. We did a jungle trek with Yakub & Irgi ( sorry for the spelling ) and it was fantastic. Both guides being very kind to us not being the fittest of people & not rushing us. Yakub had a great knowledge of the animals, jungle & Bukit Lawang & it was fascinating to listen to him. The food on the trek was very good & plentiful.

Emma and Jakub are such pleasant and forthcoming hosts. I felt welcomed and well taken care of. Jakub also arranges for jungle trecking, and he really lives for what he does. Very enjoyable.

It is in the village centre and there is traffic noise, which I did not have an issue with. It is directly at the bus drop off so very well located.

The property was really clean and the hosts were lovely! Very helpful when booking our bus to lake toba. It’s a new property so not many reviews yet but it’s worth staying for such a good price!

We loved the time here in sama sama homestay! Yakup, Emma and the kids are so friendly and welcoming. We spent 3 nights there and felt comfortable right from the beginning. It is located in the centre and right next to the river and some nice warungs. They have 2 rooms with a big balcony upstairs and also a space for drinking coffee together downstairs. Everything is very new and clean with some nice personal details. We did the 3 days/2 nights jungle trek with Yakup because he has been a guide for a really long time and knows a lot about the jungle and the animals. We were a small group with 5 people and he tried to avoid the spots where a lot of people were. We also had lots of fun with Dandy (the helping hand of Yakup) who was with us on the trek. We enjoyed every minute of it and can really recommend the trek with Yakup. Thanks for having us and we will definitely come back if we are in Bukit Lawang again.

Great location, right near the tourist bus, close to town for bars and restaurants. They also offer jungle trekking at a good price. And the owner is really lovely. Small and basic room but has everything you need, plus a good quality fan.

The road can get loud.

We really enjoyed our stay at Jakub and Emma's place! We had a really nice and tidy room directly above their own home on a little square in Bukit Lawang. From the first minute on we really felt welcome eventhough we booked so late in the evening and arrived well after 9pm. Since we really felt a good connection to the owner Jakub, be we decided to also do a 2 day 1 night jungle track with him. This was a great experience. We saw many orangutan and other animals and Jakub is a great guide who really tries to fulfill all of our wishes. Jakub and his family were very friendly and welcoming. The house was newly build and is located close to the entrance of the national park. The room and facilities were clean. It's also possible to have delicious home made food like Rice/Noodle dishes for lunch/dinner or eg Omelette for breakfast. We recommend to take the jungle trekking tour together with Jakub to the jungle, it was very good organized and he has good knowledge about the animals and where to spot them. The food provided during the trip was really nice and the rafting back on the river (included in the trekking) was fun as well.

Nothing, it was overall very nice to stay at the homestay.

The family was so kind and helpful with everything ! I did the trek just for the day...amazing, the dad was the guide for the tour and I saw a lot of animals ^^ The mom, Irma, and her sons were sooooo cute, it was really great to be in this hostel :) I'll come back next time ✨️

We had an awesome stay at Sama Sama Homestay. The owners are so welcoming, kind and friendly, so we directly felt comfortable. The brewed us delicious coffee each day and were always up for some nice and interesting smalltalk. The rooms are very comfortable and clean and we especially liked the balcony area to take some coffee and relax. We recommend a stay here!!

As the Homestay just recently newly opened not everything was perfectly finished when we arrived eg no WiFi and problems with toilet flush. But the owners are very attending and tried to fix everything immediately. The location is great and central to everything which also means on some evenings you hear the typical karaoke in the neighbourhood. But nothing to worry about, you will enjoy your stay there :)

Owner is very friendly and helpful. It's very new hostel and clean. I was very happy that I stayed there.

Bit noisy at night but still bearable
