Warm welcome. Comfortable room. Friendly staff. Exceptionally interesting location. Lovely to have access to all the rooms, chapels etc from early morning so that we had them to ourselves.
Who wouldn’t love staying at a property steeped in amazing history. The incredible collections, the museum, the chapels, the grounds, there’s so much to experience. The peaceful Ushaw Historic House alone is almost enough reason for a visit, but we also used it as a base to explore Durham and area.
The only thing that could be improved on, were the beds. Our two singles were quite old and gave our backs a few issues.
Ihana miljöö ja mukava henkilökunta 👌🏻
Äänet kuuluivat aika hyvin käytävältä huoneeseen, saattaa haitata herkimpiä, meitä ei kovin häirinnyt. Olisi kiva jos paikassa olisi ravintola.
Super location and stunning chapel.
Pretty much guaranteed quietness here , which is rare in todays world, so the place is worth it for that. The fact that there are no TVs in the room helps this sense of calm. Also the house and grounds are an added bonus if you have time in the morning or evening to look / walk around. 10 minutes or so drive from Durham, which has the best choice of shops / places to eat. Alternatively there is a pub in walking distance which has a restuarant.
Breakfast was continental only which I think reflects that there are probably often not enough guests to cater for to make this practical.
Everything about the place was first class. The facilities were very good and good quality. Loads of little extras in the room l. The breakfast was also top quality
The only slight issue was the room was very hot and the bed to soft for me, but that's a personal issue
It is a beautiful house, soo much to see
Unique place to stay, staff very helpful and friendly. access to the ground and property excellent. So quiet great nights sleep.
Great findnc550
Great place great staff

The Chapels were an unexpected delight.
There was nothing to dislike.
Great location lovely staff clean comfortable rooms

Such an amazing place to stay.

L'atmosfera di altri tempi che si percepiva camminando nei lunghi corridoi. La storia del posto faceva da supporto alla sua bellezza.
Very interesting property with a beautiful landscape. Friendly staff, onsite 24hr bookshop
WiFi very poor, barely any water pressure, breakfast was a bit lacking, bed not particularly comfortable
The house and grounds are absolutely beautiful. Interesting exhibitions and plenty to keep you busy for the day onsite. Breakfast staff are very friendly. Very clean place. Good value for money at £100 a night per room, breakfast and parking included.
A disorganised check-in experience. No TV in the room (might be important for some but we weren't there long enough to affect us). The mattresses are very very soft which isn't my preference but ok for a couple of nights. The library is currently being renovated which is a shame as we were really looking forward to seeing it.
The chapels and exhibition/museum were outstanding.
A million times more interesting than a Premier Inn.
Price, unique setting,
Size of room,
The historicalness the gardens just beautiful Loved the Library and staff were superb
I was very happy was a bit cold with windows not closing but there was heating so was great
Unusual place to stay. Blueberries muffin - delicious!
Not clear about access reception. Can be lost easily.
First class service from start to finish, extremely well looked after with facilities and food exceptional.
Unique and wonderful experience
The staff were so kind and helpful. Rooms were pretty clean. Chapel inside is pretty beautiful.
It is a bit far from city centre and public transport is not really convenient, and when it’s night, atmosphere was a bit scary.
Variable in both quality and what was on offer. Sometimes yoghurts, sometimes not. Sometimes meat and cheese, sometimes not. However, the bread, spreads, cereals and fruit juice were excellent.
Water pressure in our room (West Wing) was abysmally low making showering a frustrating business. Water was certainly hot enough though. And, while adequate, the room was a bit small (but with a great view).
Plenty of choice at breakfast
Can’t wait to see the completion of the other areas
Wonderful building and delightful staff. The room was basic as described but very good value for money. Lovely that b and b guests can look at the chapels and house ''out of hours'. It's an unusual setup for a b and b but we loved it and will come again. Very easy short drive into Durham.
The location was awesome and the chapels were beautiful. Our hotelroom had a nice view. The experience of staying here and exploring the house before opening times was very special. The room was clean and the staff was nice. No issue using the night entrance.
The breakfast options were quite limited (no cooked food) and the shower in our room didn’t drain properly. Since it was a wet room this meant the whole bathroom floor was covered in a layer of water in no time. I couldn’t wash my hair for fear of flooding the actual hotel room. I would hope that this has been fixed by now however, we stayed almost a month ago.
This was a truly unique experience, staying in a historic former seminary/college, with many interesting aspects in visiting the Hall and Gardens. Very memorable - would highly recommend it.
They did not have facilities to produce a cooked breakfast, but they did offer cereals, fruit juices, coffees, and a range of baked goods, from toast to pains au chocolat.
The continental breakfast was good but there seemed to be more choice if you got there early. GF food could be better with cereal provided as an option and not just GF bread.
The main problem is the distance you have to carry your luggage from the car park to the bedrooms . Travel light!
Fantastic location - I’ve never stayed anywhere else quite like it. The house and chapels are really interesting to look around. Excellent value for money
Room was a bit small, although adequate for a couple of nights. Our mattress was uncomfortable, although the housekeeping staff were very helpful and responsive when we mentioned it. They gave us a duvet to put under the bottom sheet which made all the difference for our 2nd night and marked the mattress as needing replacement.
Great price, good rooms considering the price. basic comfort. Pictures are accurate, but oversell the historic of house over the upscaled dorms room reality. Super helpful staff and decent breakfast.
windows are old historical ones and cannot either open or close depending on the room fate allocates you.
Wonderful historic building with beautiful grounds. Lots of Pugin related architecture and items. We could look round before the building opened to the public in the morning - a real treat
We loved everything about this property
The location was fantastic - able to walk around the historic house rooms and grounds after hours. Considering it was a buffet breakfast it was very good- even the toast was tasty. A great place to stay before the Ushaw Historic House parkrun too!
The room was a little small and the shower a bit weak but the location made up for this.
Loved the location and a quirky, memorable place to stay. Staff were lovely and a atmospheric place to unwind in. It was great that you could look around for free before they opened to the public.
The mattresses weren’t very comfortable and the the showers weren’t great.
Limited range but good quality
We liked the chapels, rooms, and grounds. The breakfast was a good buffet choice with good quality dairy produce. Nice that there was a bar open in the evening.
It would have been good to see the main library, but it was closed.
Pleasant but basic.
Something you cannot change... the place feels rather creepy.
We had a comfortable room on a beautiful piece of land. We enjoyed walking around in the evening. Staff accommodated our need to leave early by preparing breakfast to go for us.
Signage for checkin was not helpful. We were scolded for using the wrong entrance, despite there being no clear indication where we should go. It is advertised that you can walk to the nearest restaurant, but it was not recommended. It is about a mile away and the path is rough. Luckily, we had food with us.
Breakfast was just right.Loved the grounds.First time visitor. My late brother trained for the priesthood here in the 1960's so was interesting to see where he studied
Wasn't exactly sure where guests parking was.
Unique property. Full of history, superb staff from start to finish. Rooms perfect, clean, comfortable and super quiet
Nothing
Fabulous location, great to be able to wander after hours. Comfortable and quiet room. And parkrun literally on the doorstep!
Nothing
Beautiful building, quite, lovely views .
Room was very small , no TV, and you could hear people in the next room
Loved the surroundings and being able to walk around and explore from 7 am. St Cuthberts chapel was awesome but the library visit was the highlight.
The wedding dress exhibition that made the chapel and corridors look like something out of a Halloween movie and spoiled all photos.
Wonderful and unique accommodation at a good price. Clean and comfortable. Well worth a stay.
A little difficult to get to without a car.
Manque de diversité pour le petit déjeuner
Lovely old historic place
The bar needs updating
I was very impressed with the architecture and the landscape.
my stay would have been enhanced with an option for a light evening meal, as I had travelled a long way to get there
Historic property being put to good use as accommodation. Access to see the many lovely chapels is included. Comfortable, ensuite accessible twin room with tea, coffee, water etc provided. Generous continental breakfast in lovely dining room.
Nothing to dislike!!
The house the staff and accommodation
Breakfast could have a bit more variation
The grounds and buildings are unbelievable
The history
Wow - what an absolutely fabulous place to stay!!! All of the staff were exceptionally friendly and accommodating of our late arrival time, the bedroom and bathroom were clean and comfortable and the house, chapels and gardens are simply amazing. This is a brilliant place to stay if visiting the area - but equally worth a visit just to see Ushaw itself! Thank you for an excellent visit.
Beautiful location, comfortable, stunning chapels, gorgeous gardens. A continental breakfast, cereals, yogurt, fruit, breads, and pastries which was a great start for the day. Free to walk around the house, chapels, and gardens before the day visitors arrived. Excellent value too
The water pressure wasnt very good, but it is an old building so it was manageable.
La dimora storica è bellissima; i giardini; la tranquillità
Beautiful property house and gardens, huge clean room, lots of teas, coffees and milk. Comfortable big bed. Great breakfast, wonderful staff, the house is mesmerising. Fantastic value for money we will be back.
Only thing was there was a constant knocking sound not sure what it was but we did get used to it and it didn’t spoil out stay. The shower wasn’t very powerful but was nice and hot. It would be good to have a TV in the room as a nice to have but not essential
The location, history, gardens and uniqueness
The lack of water pressure for the shower. The constant beating noise that transmitted into our room(235) from 7am until midnight every night.
Loved the quiet and peaceful location.
I feel the venue is still working on improving facilities.
Amazing combo of architecture, history and beautiful setting.
Limited hot water when demand was high
The location was fab. Staff were attentive and friendly. The rooms were clean and comfy. Continental breakfast was good. Lovely house and gardens to walk round once the day visitors have gone. Great value for money. Would stay again.
Only issues were no hot water as they were having boiler problems.
Everything, the beauty of the estate, the peace, the history and exquisite chapels. Beds very comfortable, rooms spotless. Staff were very kind and access to the grounds, hall and 24hr bookshop felt special out of hours of public access. We will definitely stay again!
Nothing!
A unique historical site / with tranquil gardens and lots to explore
The bedroom - was an accessible room, so bathroom mirror was low and has to be accepted the accommodation was not created as a hotel and therefore not hotel standard. Unfortunately, due to an electrical fault we had no hot water the second day of our stay but were offered another room but water pressure low in that too.
Atmospheric experience of staying in such an historic place, being able to wander around out of hours when it was quiet.
Fire alarm waking us up and having to assemble to find out it was a false alarm!
Staff were absolutely incredible and very helpful even when we arrived late and got lost on the grounds. Breakfast was lovely as was the bar. The building itself was beautiful and the exhibits were brilliant
Unique location, quiet environment and feel.
Lack of directional map to the car park.
The breakfast was fine, it suited our needs perfectly. The place was just a nice quiet, peaceful retreat. Perfect for “winding down” very restful.
The location, the breakfast and the staff.
Uncomfortable bed and a long walk to the car park
Amazing historic place - you must visit the chapels while you are there. Nice big room with comfortable bed. Good continental breakfast. Lovely gardens to relax in.
Long distance to get to room (but there are lifts). There was an annoying dripping noise in the room (could not find what it was) which disturbed our sleep. Some distance to car park - but car parking is free.
Basic but very clean set in beautiful gardens
Total my mistake but it was to far out from Newcastle
We have stayed here before and really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. The staff are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble for them.
The setting
Inside was tired
Beautiful house and grounds. Unique experience. Lovely breakfast
Access to the house and grounds
Amazing to stay and at an old siminary. Beautiful gardens and access to the old buildings fantastic
Basic rooms but very clean
Very good value for money, stunning buildings
Rooms are quite small and basic
Almost everything.
It was a little warm in the room as it was only possible to open the small top window so airflow was not great. Ex
A beautiful venue with wonderful gardens and architecture. Only 10 minutes drive to Durham Centre. A generous included continental breakfast. The room was very basic and looked a little unkempt and tired, but clean and functional with nice toiletries and hot drink selection. The bathroom was immaculate with a lovely shower. Incredibly good value!
Bed/mattress very old. Could do with replacing.
Quietness and peacefulness of the grounds and house. Good clean room and comfortable bed. Basic continental breakfast but was all that was needed.. Good value for money. Entry to tour house and grounds was included in the overnight stay without extra charge. Good value for money. All the staff were lovely and very helpful and informative.
Nothing. Just be aware no TV in bedroom. Not missed.
Nothing
It was very sparse and very basic, rooms were very small, poor ventilation with only a small fan and very little staff. Fire alarm went off around midnight and no member of staff came to assist for quite sometime also power went out about 8am the next morning. Parking was quite far away from the building as well which was totally unnecessary because there was plenty of parking closer to the accommodation.
Amazing place, good location for visiting Durham.
wife would have liked a mirror near a socket.
Beautiful building Very helpful staff
Unusual B & B. Loved the chapels inside and out. Very informative and staying gave a real feel for the Seminary. Great free tour. Loved being able to view the Wedding Dress exhibition without the crowds. Facilities to picnic anytime. Nice cold breakfast. Lovely staff.
No fridge in the room. A bigger fan in the hot room would have been appreciated.
Welcoming Staff. Beautiful gardens. Nice room and great value for money.
No evening dining.
The location , grounds and buildings are stunning . Breakfast staff were superb and so helpful. Volunteers all very friendly and enthusiastic . The New Board Inn was excellent
We expected a better room for the £97 . It was very small , no water pressure in the shower and the mattress was very squashy / soft .
Beautiful grounds and impressive historic building. The hotel had the wow factor from the exterior and the chapel inside was beautiful
Room was very basic and not in keeping with the grandeur of the building. Bathroom was super basic, with the shower floor and bathroom floor as one with evidence of peeling sash windows from previous condensation as there is no extractor fan. Also I had to take a cold shower and couldn’t shave as the hot water didn’t work. Thankfully it was the hottest day of the year so the cold shower wasn’t bad.
Our second stay at Ushaw was even better than the first! All staff, as last time, were extremely helpful and friendly. Our rooms were lovely and our beds very comfortable. The chapels and grounds were beautiful; we enjoyed seeing the wonderful array of flowers and wildlife, especially the rabbits! The continental breakfast was very good. Both nights were very quiet and restful. An amazing B and B!
A fan in the room would have been appreciated.
This is an amazing unique property and it's a privilege to stay in such an incredible building. There really is nowhere else like it I'm sure
We had no hot water in our shower for our entire stay. We reported to the reception desk a number of times but nothing was done. The staff didn't seem to know who to report it to or what to do. I think a lot of people volunteer to work there, and are therefore not as knowledgeable as they might be.
The room was small but comfortable
Very beautiful location, unique stay. The staff were very welcoming and nice. Especially the women who does the flower arrangements, and the people in de breakfast area. Good breakfast too. Very convenient. Also loved the chapel and the second hand book shop, definitely worth visiting!
The rooms were a bit outdated, shower pressure wasn’t fantastic. The mattress has springs in it, and the walls are paper thin. You can hear the people next to you talk, cough, and use the bathroom. The lamp on the nightstand had a lot of dust on it.
Unique building in stunning setting, loved being able to roam around the extensive building. Good breakfast with range of choices on day two, although more limited on day one due to a delivery failure.
Because it is a very old building the water pressure on in my room on the top floor was very low... took a long time to wash my hair under the struggling shower!
The building and grounds were impressive, especially the chapel. We would have liked to walk around the grounds but ran out of time. It wasn't too far from Durham and was ideal as a base for visiting the city. The breakfast was simple and serve yourself.
It was a very long walk from the carpark to the building and then the room. When we arrived, the door was open but we spent a long time finding the reception, which wasn't manned or properly signposted. In the end I had to phone Ushaw so that they could come and attend to us. The person who came was very friendly and welcoming but it was probably 20 minutes from entering the building until we spoke to someone in person. Although it was a double room there was only one chair in the room.
Fantastic historic house and grounds. The chapels were lovely. Brilliant staff.
A really interesting place to stay. The room was clean and comfortable with usual facilities apart from a TV. The staff were very helpful and friendly and clearly enjoyed working there. It's an interesting building with a fascinating history. B&B guests have access to house, chapels, exhibitions and grounds, which are both interesting and highly decorative. This is not your average B&B , but if you like something a little different I really recommend it.
It's quite a trek from the visitors car park, and the house is huge with long corridors. The accessible parking nearer the accommodation had lots of ordinary parking spots and given the small number of guests I wonder why these were unavailable to b&B guests? It would have made life easier when loading/unloading the car.
Good breakfast. We enjoyed the freedom to explore the buildings after hours.
Beautiful surroundings, large and clean rooms.
