Location was good for visiting the city. It was clean and comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful

Looked a bit tired, particularly the bathroom needs updating. No bath slip mat or bath mat provided (shower over bath) A tray for tea/coffee cups would be better as nowhere to place dirty spoons etc

Quaint, comfortable, really welcoming, clean and homely. Absolutely excellent breakfast too!

Staff were very friendly towards us and our dog. The guest house provided the option for those of us taking part in the Great North Run to take breakfast much earlier than their usual times which was appreciated and our dog Poppy even got her own bowl of food. Anna also kindly made lemon drizzle cake which was left out for runners together with a range of other snacks, fruit and water. The food at the adjoining Indian restaurant was excellent and the staff friendly and it was nice not to have to go back out to eat. It is only a short 15min walk to Durham station which was convenient for our journey in to Newcastle.

We could hear guests footsteps on the loose floorboards in the room above but fortunately they went to bed early.

Wonderful location and staff were exceptional.

The staff, they make you feel so welcome. The room is really comfortable. Everything is spotlessly clean. Breakfast choices are great. We were there for the Great North Run and Anna made everyone cake (lemon drizzle, the best!) and provided fruit, cereal bars and water. Such a lovely thing to do. Hopefully see you next year

We loved our big, spacious room. Friendly staff and good location. Liked the curry we had in the evening.

Fab breakfast, fab staff, fab location as you can walk into Durham in 10-15 minutes . We didn't use the car at all.

Fabulous location, the Indian restaurant adjacent is out of this world. We are there both evenings, highly recommend. Anna the manager made us feel extremely welcome and works very hard for all her guests.

Good location with great views across Durham, but quiet too. Large comfortable room with good chairs and a small sofa; no need to sit on the bed(s). Very friendly, welcoming staff. Good car-parking space. Very nice on site Indian Restaurant (separate business)

The front door (into reception) isn't that obvious as the way in (even standing in front of it !) Would have been nice to have had decaf options in room for tea & coffee. Breakfasts options are very good, well cooked to order and served quickly but maybe the ingredients could be improved a little (e.g. baked beans & black pudding). I would stress all very minor quibbles, the pluses easily outweighed the minuses.

The property is situated in a quiet location, 20 minutes walk from the city centre and with a very good bus service if you do not wish to walk back up the hill! The staff were helpful and welcoming. The room was much bigger than anticipated and well furnished. The bed was comfortable and I slept well. Breakfast was cooked to order and enjoyable. I would certainly stay here again.

The room had a shower over the bath with a shower curtain and the shower head wouldn't stay in it's holder with the water pressure so made it difficult to wash your hair

The staff were just awesome. She even gave us information about what to look out for in the Cathedral, etc. Really helpful and had time to chat with us. The breakfast was top class. Anything and everything was delicious. I ended up have a full English breakfast.

Old fashioned room, bathroom wasn't great, corner bath with shower over, not able to just use shower as wasn't adjustable. No bath mat. All 3 lamps in room very unstable and light bulbs flickering..Just needs a few adjustments to improve.

Beautiful old building with views across to the cathedral and town centre. Comfortable spacious room. Has its own Indian restaurant Holi and Bhang which was excellent. Breakfast was tasty too.

Nothing really. Parking was a little tight l guess because of the angle in, but we managed. If you are not keen on walking l would recommend a taxi, certainly for coming back from town as the hotel is up quite a steep incline. A lovely area though so we thought it was worth the walk.

Prior to arrival, had good communication with a request. From the moment we arrived the customer service was great and friendly. I can't remember the last time I was shown to my room, nice personal touch! Lovely size room, very quiet, comfy beds, large bathroom. The breakfast was plentiful and very nice. The Indian restaurant is a must if you stay there, the food and the service was fantastic. This will be my go to hotel when I stay in Durham!

Lovely hotel, easy parking, nice comfy room, great breakfast and very friendly staff. Good location for access to city centre on foot in about 10 minutes. The walk back may be up a fair sized hill but is really not too bad and an Uber only costs about £5.

Extractor fan in the bathroom did not seem to be working but it was difficult to tell. Since the shower is over a bath it would have been good to have a non-slip shower mat provided. Although the breakfasts were great ,we don't usually have a big breakfast so it would be nice if a cheaper 'no-breakfast' option was also offered.

We stayed in one of the attic rooms. The description does say sloping ceilings and private bathroom opposite bedroom. You presume that the attic room is the only room so coming out of your room to go opposite to the bathroom will be okay. The bathroom is not opposite, it’s down a hallway and there are 3 other rooms on this floor. It was not made clear enough and it’s not ideal at all.

Anna at breakfast was Wonderful and very friendly. Good choice of breakfast, quick service Parking was a bonus

Our pillowcases were bobbled and we had a roof room. My husband is 6 foot 2 so spent most of the evening hunched over in the room whilst walking round. Staff weren’t to know this when allocating rooms.

I honestly thought we would be disappointed as from the outside it looked a little gloomy but my goodness when we got inside! It was beautiful! I believe some former guests complained about some of the furniture being dated but whilst a few items may have looked that way, it is all top quality furniture, tasteful and absolutely everything was spotlessly clean. We loved it! Anna and her team were absolutely outstanding, really looked after us and the breakfast was phenomenal.

We loved everything…the character of the place, it is very walkable to the town centre, the staff were very friendly, the attached Indian food restaurant was great: very good meal, wonderful service. Really good breakfast!

Located in a quiet leafy suburb only 10-15 mins walk downhill to Durham City Centre. Frequent bus route back up the hill to a nearby bus stop. Large well equipped bedroom. Friendly, helpful staff. Brilliant Indian Restaurant on the premises. Good breakfast with a wide-ranging menu.

Staff were amazing very friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was lovely, plenty of choice. Decor was timeless. I liked reading about the history of the building provided in a brochure, nice added touch.

Some of the decor could do with a freshen up. Located on a bank and no lift so probably wouldn't suit someone with reduced mobility.

Our room was excellent. We were travelling with our border terrier and needed a bit of space so what we were given more than met our needs.

We were here when it was 32 degrees Celsius, so quite extreme temperatures. Our room doesn't have airconditioning and was located directly under the roof, making it very warm. No AC and no fan are normally no issue, but these days were just very hot and it would've been a great thing to have.

Das Frühstück war gut, das Personal freundlich. Es gab Parkplätze direkt vor Ort.

Die Betten waren durchgelegen und die Sauberkeit des Zimmers ließ ein wenig zu wünschen übrig. Das Duschen in der Badewanne war unbequem und eng und es könnten auch mal wieder neue Handtücher angeschafft werden um die alten ausgefranzten zu ersetzen.

It was our fourth stay at Farnley Tower, and as always, we felt very well looked after by Anna and the staff. We keep coming back because we love the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, the city view from the room (nr 11), the location (on a quiet street but still only a short walk from the city centre), the veggie full English breakfast and the Indian restaurant on the ground floor. Farnley Tower is an absolute gem and we will definitely stay there again next time we’re in Durham.

The only downside is that it gets really hot inside when it’s hot outside. The fan in our room didn’t work and we could only open one of the windows, so the first night was a bit tough. But we got a new fan in the morning, as soon as we mentioned it. There was no ventilation in the bathroom (I think there was last summer), but it didn’t really bother us.

Bed was comfortable. Good choice for breakfast. Staff friendly.

The room smelled, possibly the carpet which looked quite dirty. Also a strong odour from the bathroom, quite like cat urine. The bedding did not look fresh, pillowcases were all shades of white! The pillows were cheap and lumpy and need to be replaced as does the rest of the linen!

Super location - city is within walking distance so free parking is very important. Dog friendly. Lovely, friendly, chatty, efficient staff. Beautiful, modern, well equipped room with excellent view.

Price hike across the city for graduation dates feels very unfair and knowing the room usually costs a third of the price we paid, it does not represent value for money.
