MOYSEION Matera - Real-life experience in the distant past

Amazing location, amazing staff, amazing experience!

The pool was as warm as a jacuzzi and the jacuzzi was as hot as a bowl of soup! Not a deal breaker, since the staff are more than happy to accommodate.

We loved the whole experience. Everyone was exceptional at their roles and those that played instruments were extremely talented. The interactive portions were unique and engaging. The room was well appointed and we had the best night sleep of our trip. The way they hid technology and paid close attention to the authenticity of the distant past was fabulous. The water areas were amazing and were a highlight. The food was interesting and delicious. The opportunity to walk back in time was much appreciated and the attention to detail to get you in that past time head space was impeccable. They did allow us to visit the water area on our check out day after check out which we felt was incredibly kind and took full advantage of. Being in that area was cathartic and healing.

One of the symposiums was in Italian which was very interesting but since we don't speak Italian it was hard to follow along completely. Would be helpful to have a summary of the speech for those who don't speak the language so we can follow along. While it didn't detract from our experience we did note that some other guests left during the symposium because they didn't understand the language. Also this is an interactive, immersive experience but some of the guests during our stay giggled or poked fun at times. I would say that they likely didn't get as much out of the opportunity as those that suspended reality and joined in fully. We just avoided sitting near those folks or being in the water area when they were there.

This place is beyond impressive. It's beautifully decorated. All authentic for thousands of years ago . The staff is amazing and perform beautiful rituals (shows) for apertifs (included in price) The pool is outrageously gorgeous. The breakfast is authentic and unusual and really good. Pomegranate and Barley salads, a variety of cakes with local fruit , olives, nuts and meats. All beautifully displayed. The kind staff that also performs music and rituals make the place what it is. They provided a shuttle with parking . This is an ancient rocky city with many steps.

L accueil est très agréable et original. Le cadre de la piscine est exceptionnel. Tout est très beau à l intérieur de l hôtel.

A very unique place, probably unlike any hotel you've visited before. The performances are fun and not at all kitschy, and the staff clearly take great pride in their work. Our ("neolithic") room was comfortable and spacious, despite its attempts to mimic cave living. The breakfast is fresh and delicious and the pool is truly special. Don't hesitate, this place is great!

Este não é apenas mais um hotel — é o hotel a não perder em Matera. Aqui, mergulhamos no tempo e deixamo-nos embalar pelo murmúrio das pedras antigas. Respira-se a história em cada canto: nos talheres que contam memórias, nos pratos de barro moldados pelo tempo, na cama de madeira maciça que guarda sonhos antigos, nos lençóis e nas toalhas que parecem abraçar-nos com ternura. Os empregados são de uma simpatia rara — atentos, gentis, e tão imersos na alma do lugar que parece que nasceram dentro desta época. Tudo aqui é vivido com alma, tudo aqui é inspiração.

Perfect stay

Fantastic and very unique hotel. Right in the heart and yet very peaceful. The room was quite big and had all the amenities. The unique old-style swimming pool is the best we have seen in a hotel. Breakfast was great, unique, and filling. All the complimentary experiences were designed with a lot of thought and detail.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ An Unforgettable Stay at Moyseion Matera Staying at Moyseion Matera was truly the most unique hotel experience we’ve ever had. From the moment we arrived, it felt like an immersion into another world. Everything, from the rituals to the robes provided, created an atmosphere that was unlike anything we’ve experienced before. The staff arranged seamless taxi service from the parking garage right to the front steps, which made arriving stress-free. We were warmly greeted by Davida, who personally carried our luggage through the winding streets to our room. After the welcome ritual, he gave us a tour of the property, and we were absolutely blown away by its character and uniqueness. The underground cave pools and hot tubs were a highlight—so relaxing with water temps around 100°F, making it the perfect way to unwind. We chose to sleep in and didn’t try breakfast, but everything else exceeded our expectations.

The towels were like table cloths. They were not useful. Could have used a couple more pillows.

The attention to detail to create a historical immersion into the past was incredible. All staff were passionate about history, archaeology, music & were very helpful & friendly. This was a truly unique & unforgettable experience. The underground pool area exceeds expectations looking much larger than the photos & it is such a peaceful escape from the heat.

We enjoyed the experience they had to offer. The swimming pool was very nice in the caves. The staff were very nice and we enjoyed talking to them and learning about the culture of the hotel and the city of Matera.

Beautiful property, excellent staff, safe, clean

Our room flooded because the shower drain did not work properly. Literally an inch of water all over the floor of almost the whole room. Nothing was offered to make up for it, not even a room change or a certificate for a complimentary dinner at a restaurant.

La struttura è meravigliosa, ti fa immergere nel passato e ti aiuta a staccare del tutto dalla quotidianità. Colazione squisita, con prodotti freschi e di qualità. Personale superlativo, molto disponibile, accogliente e simpatico.

This was immersion experience. The hotel was designed exactly like the time period 400 B.C. and prior. The rooms were cave dwellings and every detail(furniture, lighting, linens, etc.)was meticulously created to mimic the era with some minor modern conveniences. It was so unique and stunning at the same time. We got to participate in a ritual theater performance and experience the food, music and life as it was in ancient times. We even had tunics to wear! The underground pool and hot tubs were magical. The staff were lovely and embodied the era. So helpful, so kind and loved to explain everything and answer any questions we had. You have to experience it to believe it.

Absolutely amazing experience - would highly recommend. The staff were incredible and knowledgeable. We had the pleasure of Davide telling us all about his Aulis, and Julia explaining so much about the hotel, the artifacts and the concepts. Location is also perfect.

Staff were really good- friendly and attentive. Pool was lovely as were the jacuzzis. Rituals were interesting! Breakfast was good and plentiful - but may not suit everyone (vegans, dairy intolerant).

Lots of finishing touches to make you feel that you step back in time. The modern amenities were camouflaged. This help created an authentic feel to the room.

There were some stairs to get up to the rooms and the lobby. The hotel staff, however, did help with getting the luggage from the van up to the room and back again. They also provided a lift from the parking garage to the hotel and then back again. This was necessary for us since we had a rental car.

Un'esperienza unica che può regalare momenti memorabili a chi è disposto ad aprire cuore e mente a questo progetto di archeologia viva. Non si soggiorna qui per il posto letto (o almeno , non si dovrebbe): dimentica per una volta il cellulare e riprendi il contatto con te stesso, goditi la bellezza di un mondo antico che ha tanto da raccontare e da insegnare. Consiglio di usare il cellulare solo DOPO aver vissuto a pieno i momenti che regala l'atmosfera, e MAI durante, anche per rispetto del lavoro epico di chi ha reso possibile questa occasione imperdibile, da fare una volta nella vita. Tanto gli angoli e il tempo più adatti per le foto da postare ci sono sempre. 🛌 Le stanze sono sorprendentemente comode. Non manca nulla, è stato fatto un lavoro eccezionale per mantenere la magia di un lontano passato senza rinunciare ai comfort dei giorni nostri: sì ci sono le luci, ci sono prese elettriche, c'è l' asciugacapelli, saponi e tutto ciò che serve. Il letto è alto, massiccio, super comodo. La vista sul centro storico di Matera aggiunge ulteriore valore all' ambientazione. ♥️ Non potete non innamorarvi dell'intero staff, gentilissimo e professionale. Pronto sia per accogliervi con il massimo dell' ospitalità, sia per accompagnarvi in questo viaggio del tempo con tutte le curiosità del caso. 🥞 La colazione più magica che potete provare. Tutto fatto a mano, ogni ricetta è il frutto di studi e di ricerche per consentire all'ospite di gustare sapori di un'altra epoca. Sapori dolci e sapori salati che si adattano ai palati dei giorni nostri 📍Il punto è strategico. A 10 minuti a piedi c'è un parcheggio custodito convenzionato per lasciare la macchina e la possibilità di richiedere una navetta gratuita per raggiungere l'albergo.

What a wonderful way to look back and understand the culture of the day (400 BC) in beautiful Matera. MOYΣEION recreates the experience with the design of the hotel, the people, food, pool, furniture, architecture, right down to the dinner plates, cups and cutlery. The staff are all trained in the fields they love - like archaeology and share the journey. They also demonstrate beautiful music using instruments of the day. It's incredible. On top of this, the chef does an amazing modern interpretation of food from 400BC. It is all very cool. It is totally worth going with the flow and fully embracing and immersing yourself in the experience. We did, and we were rewarded for it. Finally, the staff are exceptional. So kind and attentive. They make it perfect.

Abbiamo molto gradito la gentilezza del personale. Ambientazioni fantastiche, belli anche i rituali. Colazione davvero particolare e buonissima, con alimenti freschi e pieni di sapore. In più abbiamo effettuato un massaggio di coppia veramente splendido. Posizione ottima.

La piscine et l’espace détente sont fabuleux. La chambre extrêmement confortable (matelas fermé et souple), l’accès facilité grâce au shuttle mis à disposition gratuitement depuis le parking Damasco, les petits déjeuners sobres mais très très bons (pas de buffet gargantuesque où la moitié finit à la poubelle, plutôt des produits bien choisis en quantité raisonnable), le personnel très aimable et disponible pour toute demande, certains sont même musiciens et vous offrent des démonstrations d’instruments d époque (magnifique découverte de l’aulos, une double flûte dont un membre du personnel joué formidablement bien grâce à une grande maîtrise technique)

Tutto è stato perfetto!

A relaxing, calming, cool retreat in the middle of hot Matera. The room was spacious and well appointed and the pool is an oasis of calm. The staff were friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and couldn’t do enough to make our stay comfortable. The breakfast was really delicious - lots of very nice home made cakes, died fruits, nuts, cheeses, breads. We only stayed one night due to our schedule but wish we had had a second.

MOYSEION è un luogo unico, andato ben oltre le mie aspettative. Il personale è una vera famiglia – amichevole, coinvolgente e professionale – che ti accoglie nella loro casa. Bellissimi ed emozionanti i riti eseguiti dal personale, artisti a tutti gli effetti (in senso musicale, attoriale e performativo in generale), a cominciare dall'arrivo e proseguendo nei più momenti della giornata. Splendida piscina e vasche idromassaggio sotterranee, dove il tempo sembra fermarsi e da cui non vorresti mai uscire. Ottima colazione (dolce e salata), in cui lo staff è riusciuto a coniugare il gusto moderno ai piatti tipici greci dei tempi passati. Costante cura degli ospiti, che non sono considerati semplici clienti ma abitanti del MOYSEION e parte della famiglia. Sono appena rientrato a casa, ma non vedo l'ora di poterci tornare anche solo per una notte. MOYSEION è un'esperienza da non perdere!

I particolari di una struttura recentemente restaurata, con l’obiettivo di farti vivere i momenti del 1000 aC. con vestiti, profumi e suoni….

Forse potrebbero spingersi di più con questo tipo di rituali, con più spiegazioni. Manca la cena e forse la SPA potrebbe essere valorizzata di più, magari con proposte di massaggi.

Une expérience exceptionnelle vraiment à faire

Une Ambiance théâtrale avec une décoration et une mise en scène antique. C’est plus qu’un hôtel, un voyage dans le passé qui s’accorde avec l’histoire de Matera, une des plus vieilles villes au monde. Séjour de deux nuits formidable. Le personnel est particulièrement agréable !

Un petit coin de terrasse extérieure aurait été un plus.

Incredible stay - perfect balance between a luxury stay in the heart of one of the most beautiful cities, and exceptional experience/immersion which makes it different from all other hotels. You can "dose" it how you like: if you want to use this only as a charming boutique hotel, you can, as the location is incredible, service is excellent (shuttle service to parking lot, adorable staff, delicious breakfast and aperitif, great room, incredible cave thermal pool). If however you want to experience something different and take advantage of the immersive experience (and you are never pushed to do so), it's very well done and gives you a really different "stay" that you will remember.

Nothing - the only suggestion we would make is to have a leaflet, or a way to communicate additional information about the time period and discover all the "efforts" the staff has made to stay true to the period (for example, the mosaic in the pool and at the reception is mirroring the one of an archaeological site, or the link to the Eleusynian mysteries during the water ritual, which we only found out because we asked - when it is amazing enough to be pointed out!).

Emplacement exceptionnel, équipe a l'écoute et très gentille. Le concept est très bien, nous avons passé un moment hors du temps. Les infrastructures sont très réussis, la piscine est formidable. La vue sur la ville etit a couper le souffle. A refaire sans hésiter. Merci.

Un piccolo armadio e un piccolo frigorifero sarebbero una piacevole aggiunta all' esperienza. Forse non rispettano il concetto della struttura ma non sono certo un punto negativo, basta organizzarsi.

Siamo entusiaste della struttura, veramente fantastica, e ancora di più dei ragazzi dello staff, bravi, colti, motivati e di una gentilezza eccezionale. L'ambientazione storica e' stata realizzata in modo fedele con una cura sorprendente dei particolari. La piscina interna e il rito che lí si svolge sono suggestivi ed emozionanti. L'insieme incanta per l'ipnotico viaggio nel tempo e al contempo risveglia nell'ospite il messaggio potente e senza tempo della cultura dell'antica Grecia. Complimenti.

Nulla che non vada. Mi è piaciuto tutto. L'idea innanzitutto e il grande lavoro che si intuisce esserci dietro. La sorpresa di sentire suonare l'aulos e di ritrovare i mosaici di Caulonia. La luce soffusa come quella delle fiaccole e il parlare con lo staff di storia, religione, musica e sogni.

Amamos viver a experiência que o hotel se propõem. Conseguimos entrar no astral de Matera, que é uma cidade divina. O hotel é lindo, cada detalhe nos faz acreditar que estamos no filme "Paixão de Cristo". A equipe é muito gentil e atenciosa.

A cama e os travesseiros poderiam ser mais confortáveis. E achamos o ritual Water Sanctuary uma perda de tempo.
