A nice traditional pub in a quiet location, close to the M6. The bed was comfortable and the pub food good. Staff were friendly and efficient, especially the young lady on breakfast duty. The pub has its own ample carpark which is good in a small village.
There was a glitch on booking the room, which was booked on this site. When the pub hadn't answered a question that we sent, we rang the pub from the number on the Booking.com app. The number on the Booking.com app was a private number in Manchester. We then went to the website for the pub and rang directly but was told by the new owner that all rooms were fully booked. However, Stuart, the helpful new owner rang back a few minutes later to say there was now a room which we were obviously relieved about. I hope that these were just teething problems for the pub as it deserves to be a success. On Booking.com it said there were tea and coffee making facilities in the room. When I mentioned next morning that there weren't any in our room I was told that we should have been told at check in that they were at the end of the corridor, outside the bedroom. We also had a tiny amount of toilet paper which we didn't realise until the middle of the night - Not a good time to discover that!
Liked the people, the room was small but very comfortable. Liked the arrangements for tea and coffee. Supper was delicious.
Wasn't wild about the noise the loo made after we flushed it, and when we ran the hot water. And the breakfast was not brilliant, but I'm sure that was just teething problems with the new owners only having just taken over.
Good location, plenty of parking and nice food. Hot water urn and tea, coffee and milk supplied next to our room. It was dog-friendly.
Being overcharged for the meal and drinks we had. The twin room (7) is very small - the beds may as well have been a double as there was no space between them. The plumbing is so noisy, impossible not to wake one another up when using the bathroom. The hairdryer didn't work. Our room was next to the fire escape that the staff used to go in and out from so it was noisy at times.
Room was nice, good size Comfy beds Nice location
Breakfast could have been cooked a little more in my opinion Few cobwebs in the room and ensuite and dusty
The beer
Small bed - feet stuck out the end
Perfect location for a wedding we were attending. The owner even gave us a lift home, which was absolutely great.
Nothing it was cancelled because tbey couldnt prrovide food
A phone call the night before to tell us there would be no food and advised us to cancel which i did now i am having a struggle to get a cancellation without paying
Lovely place to stay , lovely staff and great breakfast
Accommodation clean and comfy Ideal placed for our macmillan mighty hikes on the Saturday
Felt the English breakfast didn’t live up to the name
Nice pub
Breakfast disappointing, not good quality ingredients used
Generally clean rooms
Main staff grumpy, made mistakes with bill and generally did not appear to want to be there! Breakfast limited, minimal fruit and slow service
Staff were genuinely friendly and down to earth, especially when travelling with pets - I have 3 dogs! They couldn't have been more welcoming or friendly. Slept like a log considering the mutts treated both single beds as theirs!
Nothing.
Darren was a brilliant host, very personable and extremely helpful trying to assist us to get a taxi to a wedding we were going to.
Nothing
Clean comfortable accommodation ideally located for western lake district. Breakfast and evening meal were freshly cooked and very enjoyable.
Bathroom was a ltlle small.
Best sleep I've had in a long time. I'm a very light sleeper but slept like a log. Beds were fantastic.
I didn't stay longer!
Great location for us - very quiet but easily accessible. Very sorry to learn the landlord & his wife are leaving with no immediate replacement likely to step in. It would be very sad to see this lovely pub with rooms close after over 300 years in business
Staff were courteous and friendly, and the breakfast and evening meal were very good quality. Safe, secure parking. Lovely view of sheep and hills from our room! It was nice to sit outside in the evening sunshine, on the quiet rear decking on first night and in front of the pub with views of the hills on our second.
My mistake, but the bed we booked was a standard double, and we have a supering at home ... so our two nights were very cramped and uncomfortable! These days, I think that more hotels should try to provide king size as standard, especially given the cost per night, which we found to be (typical of the Lakes) very high. No doubt because of the age of the building, the plumbing relies on pumps - it's perfectly efficient, but can be a bit disruptive, especially at night.
Friendly welcome traditional pub with wonderful cosy atmosphere lovely open fire . Quirkey room . Lovely bath and shower room very comfortable beds .. spotless bedding and towels . Good breakfast choice ,filter coffee .
Friendly staff, lovely pub and dog friendly 😀.
Full of old world charm
Bathroom tiny.
Beds comfy. Breakfast nice. Lovely old pub with upgraded rooms.
Nothing
Evening and meal was amazing! Good selection of drinks and the staff were really friendly and helpful. Quite enjoyed the outside facilities as it was a warm evening so we had a few drinks outside.
I personally wasn't a fan of the pillows in the rooms, usually I take my own but forgot. Toilet makes a really loud noise when flushed so was hesitant to flush it during the night in case I woke other guests.
Great staff good food
Nothing
Easy to access, easy to get out early in the morning, land lady was lovely, bedroom was nice and comfy with plenty of plug sockets and shower was powerful. Nice quiet area.
Don’t do food every day but other places locally to visit
breakfast , was excellent, plenty of choice. the room was cosy and comfy with every thing we needed from towels to the drinks facilities
being charged twice for the stay ie booking.com charged, then hotel charged on arrival, but hotel rectified the problem, very under staffed, but didn't affect our stay
Great location to break the journey up from Scotland to Somerset, not far off the M6, good size car park, very comfy room with tea/coffee facilities, shower great, excellent evening meal and breakfast, would definitely stay again.
needs an iron
The room was spotless and the breakfast was delicious . Staff were really nice. Very comfy bed.
Comfortable bed Good location
Heating problem Noisy plumbing Breakfast was disappointing
Breakfast was excellent. Staff were friendly and helpful
Lovely old Inn the building was everything you would expect for a property that old, had a smashing fireplace and looked very festive. Staff were all friendly and helpful, food in evening was very good as it was a Sunday we had the roast beef which was cooked perfectly. Room was clean and had good tea/coffee with fresh milk available.
Nothing overly bad, room was compact for the price, toilet was very noisy (but expected for the type) breakfast was one of everything(1 piece of bacon,1 sausage) hubby was a little disappointed but my eggs were nice. Last little thing is they need to WD40 the sign outside as it's quite squeaky and we were grateful it wasn't windy otherwise it would have kept us awake.

This is a beautiful and quaint country pub, attracting visitors and locals alike. It’s not been spoiled by becoming too commercialised like a lot of country pubs nowadays. I was unsure as it’s under relatively new management but the owners and the rest of the staff were lovely, friendly and helpful. Rooms were clean and good facilities. Would definitely recommend the Queens Head
Nothing that I don’t like. We were staying as the refreshments were being held her for my mums funeral. There was an issue with the water going off on the first night due to some works that had taken place with the plumber the day before. The owner did everything he could though to rectify the problem quickly and water was back on by the following morning so the funeral tea went ahead as planned.
Convenient to motorway
No convenient dog peeing area!!
Breakfast was great. Cooked well.more than enough
Nothing.i liked it all.
Everything, such a beautiful place to stay and everyone is so friendly
The proprietors were super friendly we instantly felt at home, lovely couple 😍 Breakfast was good and great choice.
The room was small
Very welcoming. Catered for all my needs. Good choice of gluten free meals.
Friendly Welcoming Local character
Friendly staff all round. Good breakfast
Very friendly.
Plenty of character
Customers at the bar were very loud and boisterous. Service was a bit slow considering there were two staff .
Great to see this being refurbed with so much effort going into its new operation - highly recommended!
Unique, friendly and quirky. The food and atmosphere was fabulous
The dripping shower (which, apparently, had been ongoing). Even with putting towels in the bath and closing the bathroom door ……the dripping was still annoying.
Breakfast was very appetising and filling. The hotel was well placed for where I wanted to go walking and visits. The staff are very friendly and helpful.
Can’t think of anything at the moment.
Have the availability of a fridge
Good location lovely breakfast
Room was cosy and warm Location suited us for traveling around Staff exceptional
Service and food was excellent
The rooms were excellent and very clean. Staff very friendly and helpful. Very close to ullswater and other sites of interest in the area.
Waste water device in room was pretty noisy.
Breakfast was good and having fresh milk for room. Evening meal was good value.
Room was cramped and toilet mechanism noisy. Lots of stairs/ steps to room.
Location was good for our needs-not far from M6. Breakfast adequate quality but lovely staff . Room decor modern and tastefully furnished. Good parking facilities.
The rest of the pub decor looks very tired. There are so many steps to negotiate to access room. Our room is small for price paid. Nowhere to put any toiletries down in bathroom.
Clean room. Comfortable bed. Good meals at the pub.
Bedroom was cold.
Great food ..
Bedroom small and bathroom noisy .
great position en route to the south - lots of character - very good food - not too busy
nothing
Spotless, friendly staff
Nothing
Staff were all great and the food amazing.
Has a family run / attention to detail vibe about it
Great location. Friendly staff. Good value food.
Room was very small. Bathroom tiny . Could have done with some comfortable chairs in the bar area. For £130 would expect a bit more.
Good food Nice traditional pub feel Easy parking Good access to the North Lakes
The room really was very small with a tiny bathroom. It was therefore quite expensive for what you got. The double bed was squeezed in although it was comfortable.
Staff
No car charging points as advertised on Book.com
Situation in small village
Noisy plumbing
Staff are really attentive, breakfast was outstanding and the room was cosy and clean.
The location was good
There were not clear instructions on what to do when checking out as to where to leave the key etc
breakfast was really lovely
Excellent evening meal and breakfast.
The room size was fine for me and my dog, but it was listed as a double and would have been tight for two adults.
Breakfast was amazing Mandy the waitress was on hand with any questions and portions size was fantastic also had evening meals are well worth it
It was ok very old
Noise in the bathroom from toilet system Small bathroom
Quaint old coaching inn, characterful, small village just right for a short walk before / after dinner. Friendly staff and like-minded guests.
Location
Although well equipped, the room was very small - almost claustrophobic. The access to the room was not easy - narrow steps and several different levels.
very honest
very loud water system
Good basic clean and comfortable room. Excellent for the price.
Shower dripped all the time. Bit annoying
Easy parking, great restaurant, new clean rooms.
Lovely rooms, compact but sufficient size, bed was very, very comfortable.
Nothing.
Lovely place. Lovely staff. Ideal place for exploring the lakes. Amazing food breakfast Lovely.
Nothing place was lovely.
A quaint little pub with lots of character not far off the main motorway. Bedrooms had recently been refurbished and although small were adequate. Our evening meal was good as was breakfast. Beautiful quiet spot.
The noisy macerator for the bathrooms took a bit of getting used to but fortunately none went off during the night.
Everything was just brilliant.
