This property has a lovely layout with attention to detail. The room is ample sized with a comfortable bed and good sized bathroom. The decor is very tasteful and we enjoyed our balcony with a garden view. My husband used the gym which is very large with plenty of up-to-date equipment, honestly worthy of the gym I pay for at home but with a view. Breakfast and dinner were both great with lots of options and we liked swimming in and lounging by the pool. Most of all the staff were super helpful, warm, and friendly, breaking through that tourist experience to make you feel at home. We especially enjoyed chatting with Janani who bursts with personality and curiosity. We highly recommend this property!
The toilet in the bathroom could use a bigger door for more privacy.
Absolutely LOVED!!! our stay here. From the amazing staff, like Janani, who showed her passion for the whole “first women-led hotel in Sri Lanka”, to the attention to detail, the overall hospitality and the amazing food. The location were superb with some outstanding views!!! Love the sustainability of the hotel and its ethos!! The team were all brilliant and we loved our stay here and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to feel special and have a wonderful experience!!! Can’t wait to visit the team again. Special thank you to Janani for taking such a great interest and were soo friendly, professional and clearly very passionate for what she does!!!
Absolutely nothing!!!
After travelling for weeks in Sri Lanka and experiencing mostly male staff at hotels, my wife and I often said to each other. "This hotel just needs a women's touch." When we were booking our hotel to go see Lions Rock, we saw the header "Sri Lanka's first women led hotel" we were SOLD. And it's amazing, from the moment the female security staff wave you through to the magnificent hotel. The difference between this and other hotels is obvious. It's a vibe! It just feels so much more comfortable and friendly to have a nearly entirely (did see a few male gardeners) female staff. The service is some of the best we recieved on our holiday. The food is excellent. The rooms are perfect. The pool is a highlight. And the short walk to the lake was fun when you feel like getting about. Hotel got us tuktuks to Lion Rock and the Cave Temple, both awesome things to do. Would have loved to seen a Loris at the nearby wildlife refuge, ran out of time. Overall, a fantastic experience. A+
Incredible hotel set in a stunningly beautiful mango grove. We travelled around Sri Lanka for a month and this was the best hotel we stayed at. So relaxing after a hot day’s sightseeing in the local area. Good food, lovely friendly staff. Highly recommended.

Beautiful property all around, with excellent food and service.
A minor thing but the bikes could use tune-ups.
We really enjoyed the pool area, the mango garden was very picturesque, the buffet food was fresh, diverse and delicious. We really enjoy the calmness of this place! Rooms were very clean and the stuff friendly.
The service at the pool could be improved. Food and dishes are staying around the whole day, you need to remind them in average 2 times that you ordered something.
The location is nice near the lake, the pool is nice, the staff was helpful
After being in 4 different 5 star hotels in Sri Lanka, this hotel should not be ranked 5 stars, no more than 4 stars. The rooms maintenance is not good, the rooms are not clean enough, the food variety at breakfast and dinner is not great. It is priced as other 5 star hotels I have been but the value for money is lower.
The staff is very kind, all ladies, amazing service. The facilities are impressive. It was a pleasant experience.
Prachtig hotel, lief en veel personeel, heerlijk eten, ruime kamer, ruime badkamer, heerlijke bedden, mooi schoon zwembad, fijne ligstoelen, airco goed, altijd warm water, fijn balkon.

Everything was perfect!
Liked the breakfast - location as well as food choices.
Nothing specific
Everything, was the nicest experience in Whole Srilankian trip
Bit hard to find the location with Waze
Peaceful and very clean. Great food and gym.

It was expected to be very good and it was, The location, room, food and facilities were great. The staff was very friendly and very helpful
The pool was too open to the reception area/ Entrance, Maybe few trees to cover from the front would have had more privacy.
Zeer vriendelijk personeel.
Having stayed in another Thema Collection property (Waraka Hotel in Udawalawe), my wife was looking forward to this stay in a relatively new property in the Dambulla-Sigiriya region. I had read the positive reviews, but WOW. From the moment we walked into the grand lobby with a giant, open, wall-free view of the pool, garden, Kandalama Lake, and hills, we experienced magic. The claim of being "the first women-led hotel in Sri Lanka" is absolutely true. You notice immediately that, except for the gardeners, every staff member is a woman. And that probably explains why the property is managed so efficiently. ;-) Every person you meet greets you with a smile and is quick on her feet. The room is spacious and comfortable, the amenities are great, and the food is good. The pool is pleasant too. The two highlights of our stay: - Nature and birds, throughout the garden and by the lake, especially at sunrise. We photographer many small species we didn't see elsewhere. - The room technology. We're from the US, but I'm going to look for fixtures I saw in our hotel room when I return home. For example, the shower fixture is awesome. Also, the blinds are genius. Nearby Dambulla Cave Temple is a must-see for Buddhists and archaeology buffs. And Pidurangala Rock offers breathtaking views at the end of a rugged but interesting trail.
I can't think of a single thing.
The food was amazing with several courses for both breakfast and dinner. The staff were incredible from first greetings to arrival to goodbyes. They all adored our daughter and even had a private tour with the hotel's naturalist to a cocktail making course for my wife. The balcony spa baths were also great.
The double beds could be improved which were 2 single beds joined.
This is an exceptionally enjoyable place to stay. A peaceful and very attractive setting, spacious modern rooms with very good facilities, large and very well-positioned pool, excellent dining area and food options, and friendly and efficient staff who are readily available. We greatly enjoyed the two excursions arranged for us by the resident naturalist Sithumi, who was a very well-informed and sensitive guide. Julian and Carolyn
Nothing.
My stay at Amba Yaal was truly amazing. The atmosphere was peaceful, relaxing, and beautifully maintained. The hospitality was exceptional, and the staff made us feel comfortable and welcomed throughout our stay. The rooms were clean, spacious, and thoughtfully designed, giving a perfect blend of comfort and elegance. The food was delicious, with authentic flavors and excellent service. The surroundings added a special charm, making the experience even more memorable. Overall, Amba Yaal is a wonderful place to unwind and enjoy quality time with family and friends. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a calm, comfortable, and memorable stay.
Amazing place!! Had a lovely time. Building is very modern and well decorated, with beautiful surroundings and pool view. Very kind and helpful staff and comfortable rooms.

Beautiful location close to Danbulla, Sigirya and next to three parks, from the pool garden we could spot egrets, peacocks, kingfishers and so many other birds and animals. The food was excellent and the spa treatments were some of the best I ever had. But above all, what makes this place truly special is the women who run it. Their kindness and attention to detail is truly exceptional and made our first stay in Sri Lanka unforgettable. Thank you Ishani, Samadhi, Dammika, the resident naturalist and every single one of the staff who looked after us.
All was perfect
We had an absolutely wonderful stay at Amba Yalu in Sigiriya. The staff were incredibly attentive and genuinely friendly, making us feel welcome from the very first moment. Both the breakfast and dinner were outstanding. The Sri Lankan cuisine in particular was exceptional—clearly prepared with great care and attention to detail. The location is truly breathtaking. The hotel is set right by a lake and features a beautiful open reception area that blends perfectly with the surroundings. The garden is lush, well-maintained, and filled with numerous mango trees, creating a peaceful and unique atmosphere. The pool, located in the middle of this garden, is simply stunning. We also had a fantastic yoga experience and truly enjoyed the Ayurvedic treatments, which added an extra level of relaxation to our stay. Our room was very comfortable and pleasant, providing the perfect space to unwind after a day of exploring. From the hotel, all major sights in the area are easily accessible by car, which makes it a perfect base for exploring Sigiriya. We had a fantastic time at Amba Yalu and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the region

Service wad excellent
The Ayurvedic massage was too soft. Think they should train their masseurs to be a bit more professional and attentive
- incredibly friendly staff all time long and very personal atmosphere - very attractively situated for decent experiences around Sigiria - great spot with kids (4/1 yr old) - perfect relaxation and activity - very cool design architecture and cineastic style around the building

The hotel is nicely designed and the room was lovely but there was a problem with mosquitos Very nice pool area & good massage, but the gym equipment is ancient and the aircon there doesn't work properly I asked for a vegan afternoon tea and was served a cake with with dairy products. But after this the chefs were pretty good at explaining the options at dinner and breakfast. The "extras" advertised amount to very little so they are quite misleading!
See above
The location is superb, quietly tucked away in a mango orchard on the edge of the lake. Far away from the road, it’s extremely tranquil. The ladies are all very smiley and the whole place was pristine. The design was cool and quite funky, it’s very stylish, but not at all flash.
Only the terrible coffee and the not very effective blinds on the bedroom windows. The food was good but not superb.
Peaceful & relaxing boutique hotel

What a well managed property! We loved our stay at Amba Yaalu - the staff and management at the property are so kind and made such an effort to make our stay special. A very special shout out to Sachini, Rehani, Shehara, Hansika, Reshani, Champika and all others who went out of their way to make us comfortable. The property is beautiful, its location is amazing and the food was delicious. 10/10 - would highly recommend Amba Yaalu to everyone.
all stuff is friendly ,helping ,smile all the time ..very kind Tea tree house was fantastic.. Welcome drink was delicious 😋

Wonderful experience! Staff is very attentive, clean and well maintained hotel. The surrounding is stunning, it is peaceful and relaxing to wake up to the sound of birds. Special thank you to both Ishara and Agid, our therapists at the Spa. We highly recommend! Both were very professional and well trained!

Amba Yaalu is an Oasis by Kandalama Lake, not to be missed. My female friend and I found the hotel safe, clean and we felt we could relax here much more than other hotels, because it is women run. No major worries of being stared at by the pool in shorts or swimsuit. No creepy questions from male staff (yes this has happened in top rated hotels in Sri Lanka, and other countries). For women travellers, we wanted to experience this hotel and the absolute truth is we wish more hotels were women only staffed. The room was beyond what I imagined with a wonderful view of the mango garden and lake and a bathtub on the balcony! We stayed for 2 days and didn’t have time to use the bath but we’ll just have to return. The lobby is quirky and gives a nod to the cinematic history of Sri Lanka and is a peaceful area to sit as you have a clear view and access to the pool and garden. The boutique shop is well stocked, we bought a few presents at reasonable prices- worth it! The garden is a short walk from the lake and you are likely to see elephants in the distance, at the other side of the lake. Who needs a safari tour when they are in your back garden - even just to glimpse these mammals without the fuss of safari trucks, it’s worth a stay here. All the staff are welcoming and ready to assist. The managers were always onsite and accessible and we enjoyed seeing the women’s uniform of saris but also formal trouser and shirt. All the facilities were clean and lovely designs. The hotel is super new so it’s worth going soon! :) Lastly, the spa was fantastic! I usually do not like massages at hotels as they are not high quality but the staff knew how to find pressure points and use the correct (deep) pressure. No silly light strokes of the back. We got head massage, neck back legs and feet, and I almost fell asleep the treatments were so relaxing. We highly recommend and hope the owners invest more in this hotel and alike and the women staff. Thank you to all the staff.
Sadly the food and drink options were limited, but we suspect this is due to trailing this new hotel with a women only model. The food is good but could become limiting if staying for more than 3/4 days, we look forward to seeing more options next time. The breakfast wasn’t a buffet, you order from a menu and you can get one of everything. I prefer a buffet but again, I suspect it’s too early for this hotel. But the more people that stay there, I believe the more accommodating it will become. The positives of the hotel far outweigh this personal issue. The location of the hotel is by the lake so it requires organising transport to and from town/sightseeing, but I think that’s what a lot of people now have organised for their travels around SL, for this reason it’s just a mention but I don’t think it’s a huge restriction for coming to stay at this hotel.
Excellent management and staff. Located within Mango fields! Very picturesque.
Too many insects. Average facilities!
Everything! The view from the room was incredible. The area is very peaceful, you're surrounded by trees and wake to the sound of nature. The hotel itself is very stylish, with great food, cocktails, very friendly staff and a lovely spa.
Kandalama is a little far from the main town and sights in Sigiriya but it was easy to arrange transport.
Die ruhige Lage in der Natur. Das Nachaltigkeitskonzept. Die Architektur, Ausstattung und Dekoration.
Versprochene Vogelbeobachtungstour hat es nicht gegeben (keine Erklärung), Kein Hinweis auf A Lage Carte Option im Restaurant. Cappuccino zum Frühstück wurde extra berechnet.
The hospitality
Nothing actually
Chathuni was fantastic and a credit to the hotel. She made us feel every welcome on our special 40th wedding anniversary !
Not a lot
Very friendly staff, beautiful location off the beaten path, building with high ceiling, surprisingly great gym
A water dispenser would be nice
Personnel was very friendly and attentive to details. Rooms were spacious, clean and nicely decorated. Swimming pool and the mango trees surrounding the hotel, beautiful views of the mountains really made us feel relaxed. Spa facilities were great too.
Travelling with a small child, we found the dinner start time (7:30pm) too late for what we are used to. Further nothing really negative.
Being a hotel only run by women, I truly appreciate the concept behind this establishment. It also adds more meaning and empowering touch to the whole experience. The staff was warm, attentive and genuinely accommodating throughout our stay. The manager personally checked in with us daily and the housekeeping did an excellent job keeping our room spotless everyday. On our last day, the team went above and beyond to arrange a lovely dinner by the pool for my partner and me which was truly memorable.
My experience at the spa wasn’t quite what I expected. The masseuse spoke continuously throughout the treatment, venting about her personal life and low pay, despite several cues from my side indicating that I would have preferred a quiet, relaxing experience.
Staff were extremely friendly and helpful, especially Dilani from reception. The environment was calm, peaceful, and truly relaxing. Definitely worth the money. Highly recommended!
However, the bathroom floor was a little slippery, and the Yaka Bar was not functioning during our stay
Heerlijke plek aan het meer. Zeer sfeervol ingericht.
We loved our stay here. The grounds were beautiful, our room was incredibly clean with a gorgeous balcony looking across the mango orchard, and the pool was absolutely lovely. The hotel is designed so that it’s very open to the outside, so you feel like you’re in the middle of nature. We loved the decorative touches, like the wall of masks and the display of colourful bangles behind the reception desk. The whole concept of the hotel, as a women-led enterprise, is unique. This was our first hotel in Sri Lanka and it was only later that we realised how unusual it is to have so many women in these roles. It gives the hotel a calming atmosphere as all of the staff were so kind and welcoming from the moment we arrived (and lit the ceremonial peacock oil lamp!). I didn’t try the spa but my mum booked a treatment and, although a bit pricey, she loved it. The buffet breakfast was delicious, with a lot of vegan and vegetarian choices, although the dinner menu was a bit limited for vegans. We stayed two nights and wished we’d booked another, as we were so comfortable here.
A very minor thing, but the service could be quite slow - particularly when using the sun loungers or sitting outside by the pool. It felt at times that we were a bit forgotten, as no one came to take drinks orders and we had to get up and go to the bar. Not really a big deal but it would have been nice if staff had been more attentive here.
A charming hotel with beautiful interiors and warm hospitality. Every detail feels thoughtfully curated, from the rooms to the exceptional service. can’t wait to return! 🌟
Everything the staff and concept Design and atmosphere Luxurious rooms for price. What I ordered had run out at restaurant they went beyond my expectations gave free desert and made sure they made next day
The location and view is magical, one of the best stays i had in Srilanka
The staff was absolutely fantastic. You can sense how important this establishment is to change the way women see themselves and are seen in Sri Lanka.
Nothing really!
This place and its concept is just amazing. We travelled with two teens and we were all stunned. The unique female stuff was so outstanding helpful and we got so much information on the place, its concept, the idea of the hotel and how they feel. We stayed for 3 nights and had breakfast and dinner at the hotel. The food was exquisit. We were travelling off season, so there were less people at the hotel than normal. We've had the pool most of the time just for us. As we were travelling with our driver friend, the hotel was not out of reach for us. Thus, at the hotel, they provide driver (a female driver of course) as well. The connected SPA Ayurvie was also amazing and is a good opportunity to relax even more. Chathuni, our guest relation manager was a bliss and we were all sad when leaving. Therefore, we sure come back to this women-led-juwel! We were really impressed by the empowering spirit that reigns at this place.

Struttura e posizione
A magical place in the middle of a mango plantation, with a truly beautiful property and great attention to detail. The staff were incredibly kind, and the cuisine was excellent. We especially loved the unique atmosphere — we would have happily spent a few more days here in total relaxation!
nothing
