Nice big room. Very clean. Good sized bathroom & shower. Location fine, not far from Metro station.
Room was too noisy, with bar and restaurant downstairs playing loud music until 10.30 - 11pm
staff are always friendly and helpful i stay there a few times a year great location everything within walking distance - shops cafe merro
Location is good
Our room smelt of sewage as did the landing on the top floor , also another room in our party smelt very strong. We informed the hotel but offered to move us but at 11. Pm at night
GREAT HOTEL, COMFORTABLE
Nothing
Never seen anyone at the hotel no meet and greet no receptionist no one no grab rail in the shower the holtelwas cold and barren
Location was good. Staff friendly and helpful.
The cleanliness in the room and bathroom was very, very poor. We had to go to the nearby supermarket to buy cloths and spray to clean the bathroom sink, toilet and floor before we could use it. The bedroom floor had not been cleaned/hoovered.
Good location. Pleasant walk or easy bus into the city centre so can avoid all the traffic problems there at the moment. Helpful staff.
the room was spacious, the location was in the middle of the jesmond near the supermarket and manhattan pizza which was very delicious .
the hotel was not having lift ,the was not in the same building as shown in the picture, it was very noisy, i can hearing any body moving in the hall, the telephone was not operating.
Simple et correct
Ce serait plus logique d'annoncer la collaboration avec l'Hôtel Carlton dès le départ et pas seulement après la réservation.
Breakfast ,downstairs decor
Steps in room 215 border line dangerous
Location is great in jesmond, The staff were friendly.
The room was very dirty and in need of a good refurb. Every surface was thick with dust, Stained furniture and broken light fittings. The bath room was full of mold. Very noisy from inside and outside the hotel. Do not stay here unless you just need a pillow to pass out on for a night out.
Made you feel welcome We stayed at this property for nearly 3 weeks on and off days due to my passing a way, the hotel staff was lovely can’t thank this hotel enough
Grt location, friendly staff and good breakfast
Our room was spacious and comfortable. However, the decor is a little tired. Also, this was the second stay when drain smells were noticeable in the room - I’m unclear whether there’s a need for hardware measures or better cleansing of the wastewater systems. This is a shame as it detracts from an otherwise good offering
Very Little!!! BORE NO RESEMBLANCE TO PHOTOS OR DESCRIPTION ON YOUR SITE !!!! PLACE WAS VERY RUN DOWN AND NOT VALUE FOR MONEY!!!
EVERYTHING!!!!! I stayed in a hotel in Paris last year near the Champs Elysee which cost less and was lovely!!!!!!!!
It wasn’t this property . They put us in different building
The room was quiet smelly
Everything
Nothing
Nice towels, plenty of hot water, car parked safely. The score out of 10 is for these three things only.
We didn't realise we would be staying at the sister hotel across the road and the person on reception did allocate us a different room because of the amount of stairs. We paid a budget price but expected a minimum standard which was not provided. You are greeted at the sister hotel with weeds and two unpleasant tables. The mattress and pillows did not have protectors and when I checked the mattress before sleeping we found it very badly stained and in need of a thorough steam clean (I informed the reception staff the day after). The shower bar was broken and the tv remote needed to be replaced. There was no blinds in the bathroom and the room itself was not clean. No glasses provided either. I am sure we would have had a better experience at the main hotel where we thought we had booked but we only found out on arrival at the hotel. Would we stay here again? - absolutely NOT. I have taken time to read a lot of reviews with guests telling you how bad the sister hotel is so why are you not listening and making any improvements? Its obvious you really do not care and the best thing about the sister hotel was shutting the bedroom door and handing the card keys in.
Location
Hotel wasn't what i expected wallpaper wripped in room not worth the money
The location was excellent and the staff were helpful and friendly. The breakfast was good and freshly cooked
The hotel had contacted me asking if I wanted to possibly upgrade they said I would be advised on arrival, when we checked in it wasn't mentioned, when I raised it the member of staff had no record of it, once I showed her the email she said we could have the upgrade, so she changed us from a cosy double to a superior double, I dread to think what a cosy double was like as the superior was small except for the bathroom which was nearly as big as the room itself. Also the lack of a lift made getting to the second floor a real chore
Nothing at all.
We booked Cairn, were put in the hotel across the road- it was dirty with empty water bottle on the windowsill, sheets that were threadbare and marked so could not sleep in the bed. Kettle, cups tray was covered in dust and dirt.
Location in the heart of Jesmond, off-street parking, friendly staff.
Great location and good value for money
The king sized room overlooked the external AHU, which in turn was loud and woke up our occupant both nights. Some of the rooms were in a separate building but not clearly advertised until after booking.
I got a fantastic deal on a room which was situated in the Carlton Hotel across the street. The room was pretty clean and comfortable with a large bed and had all the necessary facilities. I liked the card swipe function in the hallway for security.
For the price and location I couldn't really fault it, I was staying alone and felt very safe. As a slight niggle there could have been a couple of glasses in the room and the tv would not work but for what I was using the room for it was ideal.
Really clean, cosy and comfortable ♡ safe
It was kinda hot,but they're having a heat wave an ditsy usually cold so they wouldnt have aircon ♡ but over all was perfect
Locality
Heat
Great location, many shops and restaurants nearby. 30 minutes walk to Newcastle town centre. Free parking and great staff.
Parking can be a bit troublesome but it's ok.
Fresh food and friendly service
Entrance, staircase and carpet very dirty and grimy. No lift for my disability.
Location, quiet room.
All fine
Everything no complaints
Nothing
Been staying here at least once a year for the last 10 years. Love the location and the atmosphere
Smelly towels and bed linen Noise from bar Noise from other guests This is the first time it didn’t meet expectations
Great location
I would not book again as rooms over the spy bar which is not clear when booking. Wasn't able to cancel on this basis. Didn't end up having an issue with noise as booked when students were away and were kindly allocated a room to the back of the building but I wouldn't risk this again. Parking options very limited and had to block someone in, had to park round the back of the building down an alley way. Didn't feel safe.
Nice room great for a family of 3,
Too many stairs to get to the room
Very clean and comfortable 👌
Good location
Lack of lift Black mould in bathroom
Situation On the bus route Plenty places for food & drink close by
Great location if you like bars and cafes, opposite a supermarket and quite easy to get into the city centre from there. V close to the beautiful Jesmond Dene
Room was pretty small and had a strange smell. Location not so great if you like sleep, as was right above a bar with thumping music that went on until 11pm, really hot and uncomfortable and hard to sleep
The hotel was located in a great location - close to everything we needed…☺️ The staff were lovely 🙏🏽
The hotel wasn’t very clean in general… NEEDS updating… carpets are awful and smelt musky everywhere - so bad that I had to buy candles… Pillows were absolutely awful- we asked for another pillow but the hotel didn’t even have any spare… Not great! - so uncomfortable.. Had to ask for toilet paper as we were only given one for 2 people and stayed for 4 days….
Location in nice area of Newcastle Bus Stop right outside Comfortable bed Clean room Plenty power points Good shower
Wasn't informed that the room was across road from main building until after booking . Wasn't an issue in the end . Very limited space between bed and wall making it difficult to reach other side of bed.
The staff where very friendly and attentative. The spy bar was fab great music plenty to do and reasonably priced food and drinks all brilliant quality. I always take an ice bucket to hotels and each time requested this was filled to the brim helping us cope with the warm room
Unfortunately, it was a hot weekend and it was very hot in the room
Very conveniently located, has parking, and close to some good shops and cafes
A bit noisy in the evenings at weekends but the loud music stops at 11pm so it’s ok.
Bed was comfortable. Good breakfast. Great location. Staff very friendly. Very good value for money
The room was soooo warm I barely slept (my sleep was recorded as 30 out of 100).
Excellent location..friendly staff
Location
Heat.
Comfortable place to rest our heads at night.
No much staff at base.
Very clean hotel with modern furniture and bedding. Well decorated and spacious room. Large king size bed with nice shower and bathroom. Off-street parking.
Liked it all.
Value for money
Room was very hot and even with the fan it remained very hot
The pillows were amazing and staff were lovely
Could do with lighting by the wardrobe section
Parking is difficult, if you can get it. Checking into one hotel and then walking to another hotel/building around 50 metres away and across a busy road is not "helpful". On the plus side, we were warned about potential parking issues and that the rooms would be in a different hotel/building. Breakfast which was in the hotel we checked in was very good and the place looked nice. The rooms in the hotel/building we stayed in looked/felt old and in need of TLC
Location
Nothing
It was next door to a very nice pub the spy bar
Our sheets weren’t clean and not disabled friendly no lifts only stairs
Staff always lovely I've stayed there many times
I had a couple with a new born next door and the baby cried from 4am both mornings. The walls were thin and I was absolutely shattered with the lack of sleep.
Beautiful downstairs in the bar area and outside very pretty with lights
Room very dated ripped curtains poor furniture looked like the bed and draws were hand painted was ment to be the best room !
Location was very good Quiet and good transport links
Back yard areas ( rear car park where there was the back entrance ) were filthy and unkempt … not cleaned for a long time Items found under the bed Cracked sink in en suite Hairs found in shower Pinch point in room between bed and wardrobe very awkward Strip light on right side was out Overall lighting was dull
Reasonably priced, good location, good room
Having to walk up the street and across the road to sister hotel for breakfast ( if raining you would be soaked for breakfast) also breakfast wasn't the best
Fantastic staff, nice, clean room, great location.
I liked everything.
Nothing much
Rooms were dirty .tatty mine was cold and my sons was too warm .breakfast was not great not much selection 8
My room have a small window and was too hot , should have put an air conditioner cuz of the size of the window
The location was good as it was near to local restaurants and bars. Our rooms were above the Spy bar which did cause me concern due to the noise but this stopped at 12am so it was quiet after this. The rooms were adequate for what we needed
The rooms are tired and need updating but I knew this from previous reviews. Apart from that they did the job
Close to metro
Prices for drinks you should get a discount so u drink in hotel instead of going out
Good location and good value.
Room doors are really noisy when closing - especially with the heavy handed prat in the room next door!
Have stayed here for work about six times now. Only place I have found that makes taking work in Newcastle financially viable. Fridge in room always useful. I like the location
As always could be cleaner. Last guest's shower gel left in shower. Generally dusty. Ever though I have stayed six times not a glimmer of recognition or acknowledgement. Room was v warm and stuffy and weather wasn't even warm this week. It's an old building though so not surprising. (Some rooms do have ac if I remember correctly )
The location was fine.
The room was excruciatingly hot. Also the corridors were even worse. This was on a warm day. Around 16 degrees outside. On other 25 degree plus days the room would have been dangerous. There was a small fan in the room so I feel as though the proprietor knows there is a serious problem here. This review relates to the "sister" hotel just down the road. Pretty much any standard booking and you will end up on this secondary site. It's definitely not worth it. If you can't get a superior offering or some room that guarantees you will be in the main hotel advertised on here you should not risk it. The small print here is a bit disingenuous. Any standard room here is for effectively a completely different hotel unrelated to the pictures shown
The room was clean
There was a smell in the bathroom
The staff were very friendly and helpful.
The room was like a sauna. I had to ask staff to release the window clips so I could open them completely. In addition the fridge didn't work even after a nice member of staff tried to sort it. There was some sort of leaking pipe in the bathroom with made the bedroom carpet soaking wet and also made the room smell very unpleasant the whole night. There is limited parking on site but you need to be aware that if you arrive early you risk your car being blocked in until 7am. Not an issue for some but I needed to be on the road early(3am) but couldn't get out until 540am when the van blocking me in left.
Stayed here a few times. Always a good stay. Never have any need to interact with staff except for check in/out. But always friendly
unable to sleep our room was next to stairs and we can hear peoples footsteps even in the middle of the night
Air conditioning in the room Good value for money
Bathroom smelled and floor not too clean Over a bar that thumped loud music Only got a warning about loud music and some rooms being at another location after making a non-refundable booking
The location and the staff. The room was comfortable.
Nobody's fault but the room was very hot ( though a fan was provided). Also no proper bedside lamps. The light switch by the bed controlled the side lights and the main light. You couldn't just have one of the side lights on.
It was ok. Reception were OK on check in, not as friendly in manner as thought would be from the polite emails.
Front Looks nothing like picture, taken with wide angle lens. Although knew standard room in hotel 1mins walk, didn't know across and down road, thought in annexe of hotel. Car park rammed full. Room was soo hot even carpet was warm to touch. People slamming doors late at night. Ihad requested a quiet area of hotel, room was next to a door 🤔
Location
Issues with breakfast: Cold bacon, cold eggs, cold beans, luke warm sausage! Lack of fruit, no yoghurt, no butter! Issues with room 400: Fire exit door opposite our bedroom left open on numerous occasions with us having to keep shutting it! The first night in particular we could hear people either using the door to either enter or exit this which we immediately reported to reception the following morning who were going to check cctv. To date we had not had any feedback on this!! leaving us feeling insecure & unable to sleep in that room!! Lastly bites to neck & upper arm received during my stay at the CairnHotel!!! We had booked for three nights but felt that we could no longer stay at the Cairn Hotel & checked out after the second night, having to find alternative accommodation for our third night!! We feel very let down by the Cairn Hotel & feel that our complaints have been disregarded!! All in all a very unsatisfactory stay.....we will not be returning nor recommending to other people via reviews!!
The Cairn Hotel was great value for money. The staff were lovely and our room was immaculate. It was warm on the 3rd floor due to it being 24 degrees outside but the large fan provided really helped keep us cool. There is an outside bar that plays good tunes until about 10pm and we enjoyed the atmosphere. Breakfast was delicious and the staff were very accommodating to a dairy free diet. We will definitely be staying again anf recommending The Cairn Hotel to friends and family!
Nothing.
We paid for an upgraded room with a double and single. We were invited by email to upgrade and were shown a photo of a large spacious room. What we got with our upgrade was a standard sized room with a single bed squeezed in. Felt we had been deceived. Also, parking is unacceptable, cars having to block each other in. No free on street parking.
Lovely size room, plenty of towels, clean facilities
The mattress was quite firm
nice place spacious rooms
rooms were very hot. even with the window open and the fan on me and my partner were sweating
Great location, close to the city centre and near everything you would need.
Tiny room, the TV was hard to see from any chair in the room. Fan was old, broken and dusty. Staff wasn't at the second location to talk to if needed. People constantly slamming doors and windows didn't open much which was really difficult in the heat wave. The bathroom also had a transparent door....you could see the person inside using the bathroom when the light was on so little to no privacy.
We were attending a tennis tournament at the Northumberland Club and the Cairn Hotel was perfectly positioned. We were also very grateful to the flexibility of the staff in the restaurant who got us a meal quickly ordered and delivered when we were late arriving from the tournament. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the local amenities of cafes and bars made the trip really lovely in total.
Not much
The hotel felt like a bit of a maze, and we had to walk around trying to find where our room was. If it hadn't been for one of the receptionists helping us, we might still be looking for it today, especially as the hotel consisted of two separate buildings some distance apart. Unfortunately, the fridge in our room wasn't working either, so we ended up having to keep the things we had brought with us warm, rather than chilled, as we had expected there to be a working fridge in the room when we arrived. One of the tables was also dirty, which wasn't particularly pleasant. As for the food, I have to say it was a long way from being good. All in all, we did enjoy discovering Newcastle, which was something new for us and a very beautiful city. Unfortunately, the stay at the hotel itself was a complete disappointment and rather spoiled the experience.

Bed was comfy, pillows comfy.
Room 325. Noisy from people walking up and down stairs. Noise from outside people at the bins . Didn't like the fire door in the room.
Was a nice hotel, good location, very clean. The bed and pillows were really uncomfortable. We barely slept a wink but that could just be us. Everyones different. Breakfast wasn't nice and wasn't organised considering it was really quiet too.
Easy to walk to from the station. Friendly staff
No biscuits!
Staff friendly and helpful , but having complained about the thick layer of dust in the skirting board corners and lower parts of bedside tables, receptionist promised action, but none forthcoming !! Room lighting poor, and no bedside lamps provided, although there were power sockets nearby !
See comments above !!!
The staff are just amazing, nothing is too much trouble, friendly and helpful. The location is excellent, the rooms are good value and have everything you would need, including a fan
The property, nothing I didn’t like. The roadworks in the town centre however, made getting to the hotel a whole world of fun.
Everything i like
Nothing
Great location. Comfy bed, good sized room with en-suite.Staff friendly. Good breakfast.
Sadly the first room we were given was not clean! Almost looked like someone had been staying in the room as very dusty on kettle and bathroom radiator! Toilet not clean-looked like it had been used🥺 Chair stained with wet patch! Very dark room. Quickly moved to another room which was brighter but again the bathroom didn’t look great with broken soap dispenser In shower and black mould on grouting and soap holder. Cobwebs in bathroom and room on ceiling. My Mums room was very bright and spacious but sadly had staining on lampshade, curtain falling off rail. Air conditioning in Mums room was great though!
Staff and location. Bathroom was clean and comfy bed. Good value for money.
Room wasn’t as clean as it could be, full of dust, lots of peeling plaster due to damp, smell of weed on corridor.
Ideally located would recommend this hotel
All of it
Haveing to leave a night early and no refund due to a medical issue
It’s a great location. Triple room was a fab size, great stay. Will be back Very reasonable prices
The pillows in the rooms are very poor quality. The gorgeous armchairs in reception at The Carlton building are stained badly and look disgusting
Clean rooms lovely shower bed was very comftorble
Hotel was comfortable, the neighbourhood had many restaurants, cafes, supermarket and everything you could need. You could go to the centre by metro or a 30-40min walk. Room was very comfortable, clean, and breakfast was enough and had variety to choose.
We had the room at the stairs so could hear the noise of people coming up and down the stairs was the only thing i would change
Heating was on in a heatwave n room was unbearable
The property is located well and close to bars and restaurants. The staff were great and acted upon requests promptly.
The bathroom was dirty with hairs in the shower and there was a random wire coming out of the radiator. The rooms were incredibly hot, even when the weather has been a bit colder. They don’t offer many amenities. For example they have a 3 in 1 shampoo, body wash and hand wash.
friendly and helpful staff
only a kettle in rooms, no microwave or stove or any other way to heat or prepare food.
Great staff. Great location! Nicely decorated throughout.
Stayed twice now and there was a horrible smell of blocked drains in the hotel corridor and the rooms (windows couldn’t open).
Great location, great staff
There was mould in the room. But for the price of the room I couldn’t expect 10/10 cleanliness.
