Super freundlich.
Smuk have. Super beliggenhed.
Příjemné a tiché prostředí mimo hlavní turistickou část vesnice Bukit Lawang.
Assnia the and her group of merry guides Budra, Iwan and André made our visit to Bukit Lawang very special. It is a great family lodge with big rooms and comfortable beds. Ceiling fans keep you comfortable and Assnia is a great cook with meals from scratch. She has a lovely garden and one is a small distance from a refreshing swim place on the river. The treks organized by her and her guides in the neighboring National Park are amazing.

We zagen in totaal 12 orang oetans.
Alles was prima!
Friendly staff and very helpful! We loved our stay with 2 children from age 9 to 11 years.

T ligy n 16' v h centrum. Maar voor ons niet belangrijk. Na 3 dagen stappen was n avondje hier top

Unforgettable experience and memories at Magpie. I highly recommend for the stay and the trekking. The place: one of the few homestays I’ve seen with such a lush, colourful garden. The rooms are spacious, very clean, with a mosquito net, towels, fan etc The location: I loved it because it was in the village where you can immerse yourself with the locals and see their day-to-day It’s very close to a river where you can swim Accessibility: Easily accessible to the main village by foot or by tuktuk (close to project wings too). To get to the homestay Asniar was very hands-on and booked a taxi to get us from the airport to her place at a very affordable rate. Food: good portions for breakfast, we also had lunch and dinner there (delicious and affordable). Plates were nicely presented. Trekking: Asniar organised both trekkings for us, the one to see Ourangutans and the giant flower. She provided for us amazing guides. We were able to see very well many Orangutans, even the rarely seen Black Gibon! Best travel experience. The trek included lunch, fruits and rafting. Now to the best part: the team! It was difficult to leave Magpie because everyone was so sweet and friendly. We were welcomed with big smiles and open arms. We stayed up all night just talking, playing guitar, laughing.. sharing great memories. Thank you Asniar for everything, Magpie is a magical place. Our lead guide was Kiteng, so knowledgeable, friendly, helpful with a bright smile. Candra and Andre were great, always making sure we had everything we needed. Book now at Magpie, affordable prices, amazing team and unforgettable authentic experience!

We had an amazing stay at Magpie. Ansia organized everything for us, a private transfer from Medan Airport to Bukit Langwang, 3 days of jungle trekking and a spontaneous decision to go to lake Toba instead of back to Medan. The food was really delicious and she accommodated all our wishes and requests. The trekking was a wonderful experience with our guides Ronnie and Nasir. We saw a lot of animals, even the big male orang utan. Had comfortable mattresses in the camps at night and a lot of great food. All in all a great place to stay in Bukit Lawang and do the jungle trekking with. Everyone had a lot time and we loved talking with everyone. Made us really feel like we’re guest in your home.
We were incredibly warmly welcomed by Asniar — such a kind, caring, and genuinely lovely woman. From the very first moment, we felt at home. The location is absolutely beautiful, surrounded by nature, and everything was spotlessly clean, which made our stay even more comfortable. The food was delicious and freshly prepared by Asniar, and you could truly taste the care and love that went into every meal. We also did a two-day jungle tour, which was a truly unforgettable experience. We saw amazing wildlife in its natural habitat, and it was incredibly special to experience the jungle up close. A huge thank you to our jungle guides, Kitteng and Nasir, who have deep respect for the jungle and its wildlife, as well as to the chef who cooked fantastic meals in the jungle. The tour was challenging at times, but absolutely worth it and an experience we will never forget.
Curtains would have been nice, but this did not take away from the overall experience.
The host, Asniar. The service, the hospitality. The bungalow. The patience with the jungletour from Ronny and Nasir, because of a difficulty with walking. Exceeded the expactations.
For me/us nothing
Very friendly staff , nice and comfortable bungalow. I spend nice time in Magpie Homestay.
Magpie Homestay is amazing. Asnair and her team are honestly the loveliest and made everything so simple for us! Before we arrived I messed up our dates and Asnair kindly made the amendments and couldn't have been more accommodating! Communication was always so quick and nothing was too much trouble. Asnair organised airport transfers for us which were amazing value and the drive was so smooth. The location is a little away from the other hotels/guesthouses but we really loved this element - the walk into town along the river is absolutely beautiful and so easy. The bungalow we stayed in was so pretty and had everything you could possibly need. And the gardens around the bungalow are beautiful. We ate at the homestay multiple times. The breakfast which was included was absolutely delicious and there were so many options and the menu for lunch/dinner was also great. I particularly loved the fish soup and my boyfriend loved the fish and chips (classic Brit abroad 😂). Everything was made fresh to order and was so tasty. We arranged a 2 day 1 night jungle trek through the homestay and both of our guides Ronnie and Nasir were amazing! We saw so many orangutans (including the big male John Cena!!) and so many other types of monkeys. The food on the trek was absolutely delicious and we certainly didn't go hungry! The camping was basic (as is to be expected in the jungle) but so picturesque next to the river where you can swim. The water taxi back was so fun. Special shout-out to Nasir who designed us multiple crowns and hats on the trek which made everyone else we came across in the jungle very jealous 😂 This is a very special place in a very special town and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. Thank you to the whole Magpie team for having us 💖
Everything was perfect.
This was by far our best stay during our whole trip in Indonesia. The bungalows were both very comfortable, we stayed in one before and the other one after the jungle tour. The place is beautifully decorated with a lot of plants and animals to see in the garden. The owner was super friendly and helped us to arrange the 3-day jungle tour, a village tour, transportation to and from Bukit Lawang, the food, and she even gave us medicine when we were ill. There is a restaurant on the property, at which you can order delicious food any hour. Such a lovely stay, this made our time in Bukit Lawang unforgettable! Thank you so much for everything!
The place is even more beautiful than the photos show. The hostess is incredibly welcoming, very helpful, and cooks wonderfully. She even helped me solve an issue during my stay. The jungle trek with the guides Kiteng and Nasir was unforgettable – they are experienced, friendly, and know the best spots to see wildlife. There’s no need to negotiate with the hostess, as the prices are already fair. I truly recommend staying here.
Everything is much more beautiful than in the photos. The hostess is very hospitable, helpful, and an excellent cook. She helped me solve a problem. The trek into the jungle with the guides Kiteng and Nasir was truly magical – they are very experienced and friendly, and they know exactly where it’s most likely to see wildlife. With the hostess, there’s no need to bargain (as others have already mentioned, and I can confirm) – the prices are fair. I highly recommend this place.

Anisa was very kind and helped with everything organizing tours. Cooking was excellent. Food was freshly prepared. It was an amazing tour to the orang utans with brillant guides and again food during jungle tour was excellent.

Fantastic stay for 1 night, wonderful host and meals provided were so tasty. Thank you for having us!
Lovely little bungalow set in pretty garden. Staff excellent especially on our trek where they were very knowledgeable ethical and really great with the children.
Bungalows set in lovely gardens, very peaceful. Our guide for the jungle trekking was knowledgeable, attentive and ethical.
Everything was very pleasant - it is basic but clean so no complaints
Amazing hospitality from Asniar and her family. The traditional built house where we stayed is clean with comfortable beds and an en suite outdoor bathroom. The gardens are serene and peaceful. The pretty walk along the canal to town gives you the opportunity to see local life unfold and chat to the friendly children. We have really loved our stay here but our real highlight was the jungle tour they organized for us with Kiteng and Nasir. What an experience to see so many orangutans in the wild, 6 in total. Our guides were knowledgeable and fun to be with. They even taught us how to carve orangutan faces from clay stones they found in the river. The jungle food was wholesome and delicious, especially our evening meal prepared by the talented Putra. The water rafting back to town was a super addition to an already unforgettable experience. I highly recommend Magpie homestay. Their warm hearted spirit has touched our hearts.
What a wonderful time we had at Magpie Homestay! The bungalow is spacious, clean and had everything we needed, the garden is an amazing green oasis. My daughter loved feeding the fish every morning. Asniar is a fantastic host who took care of all our needs. The trekking with Nangnang, Nasir and Putra was definitive the highlight of our stay. They made sure we had the best time and spoilt us with amazing food. But we also loved visiting the village and talking to the friendly families at the canal, the bat cave (my daughter felt like a little explorer), the village tour, the eco print workshop with Sarah, visiting the Project Wings and having pizza at the Pizza ship - all of these activities are highly recommended. But most of all, we loved getting to know and speaking to the extremely friendly people of the Homestay and of Bukit Lawang. Thank you so much to Asniar, Nangnang, Nasir and Putra for everything! We will be back one day!
Make sure to not leave food somewhere in the house - after all it is in the middle of nature and if you do this same mistake as us, small animals will come. But this would happen anywhere so close to the jungle and is of course not the fault of the host.
We loved everything about this homestay. Asniar is so extremely accommodating and looked after everything from airport pickup to our jungle trek (at such a great price!). The guide Dolak was fantastic and Oleb and Emer who work at the property are so patient and kind always playing with our 4 year old and cooking us the most delicious food. The homestay is comfortable and spacious with two beds, a basic kitchen + utensils (no fridge but you could ask to use the communal fridge), many fans, WiFi, and delicious breakfast (with options) included. There is no hot water but this is welcomed as it can be hot during the day. Dinner and lunch options are also available for a great (additional) price. Some delicious options with plenty of vegetarian friendly dishes also. There is also access to washing machine so you can clean clothes post hike. This is so helpful for families! It's about a 25min walk to the main Bukit Lawang town but the walk is fabulous; straight up the canal and through the village where we got to meet many friendly families. You can also arrange a tuktuk, the driver Asniar uses (Harry) is such a gentleman, for a great price. The homestay is also close to warungs, Indomart and Alfamart, the bus station, and a local market (around 10mins walk) so you have the best of both worlds. The location is very peaceful, the pond was fun as our little one could fish, the garden is beautiful and we personally enjoy the roaming cats who pop by for a cuddle (if you're into that). Overall we cannot fault our week long stay here. Especially as a family with a little one! We would highly recommend and will absolutely come to stay here again when we return to Bukit. Thank you to everyone who made our stay unforgettable. It was hard to leave!
Nothing. Everything was perfect.
I spent 8 nights at Magpie homestay and had a very good time. The place is an excellent base from which many different excursions, shorter or multi days, can be organised. Ansiar linked me with three different guides, all very good and personable. She also helped with the transfers from Medan, to Batu Katak, and to Tangkahan. The wifi connection was good and so was breakfast and dinner. I explored a couple of nearby places but the homecooked evening meals were much nicer and I also got a little cooking lesson in the small kitchen. There is a washing machine one can use for a very small fee. I highly recommend Magpie.
Nothing
Our stay at Magpie Homestay was amazing. It was better than I had expected. Our host, Asnir, was so lovely, very accommodating and helpful. She even took us out for a BBQ picnic for my birthday. I highly recommend staying here. Thank you for looking after us and making our holiday so special.
Nothing, our stay was perfect
The bungalow is basic with fans, running water, a toilet, a shower and a sink. Even a cooking area, if required. This is simple but adequate and traditional. Most importantly, it’s clean. The kind lady and her brother are both very helpful in offering advice and directions. She also organised our jungle trekking to see orangutans and the total price was slightly cheaper than elsewhere. No need to worry about being ripped-off. The jungle trekking was really excellent, very professional and the guides took good care of my children and me. Here at Magpie homestay, the lady’s cooking is excellent and the price is not expensive. Do try her food! I hope to return again next year. There is also a washing machine for washing laundry.
What an amazing oasis it is ❤️. Asniar the owner is a great host too. Will definitely go back
Basic but clean and comfortable 2 bedroom bungalow with a small kitchen, set in a picturesque garden with its own fish ponds. The bungalow is on a dirt track on the outskirts of town, which in my opinion is a positive, especially if you have your own transport, as it gets you away from the traffic noise and the call to prayers from the mosques. Asnair, the friendly owner, is very knowledgeable about arranging local hikes into the jungle as well as cooking up a variety of tasty local dishes. A mention too for Asnairs brother, Nasir, who accompanied me and made sure I did not get into too much trouble when I went off to scout a couple of trails outside the national park.
There was nothing to dislike.
- Bungalow about 60 square meters. It is a small house with 2 rooms and 2 beds. - Quiet There is only one bungalow. Located outside and not near the noisy center or a noisy mosque. - Comfortable double bed -Friendly female manager organized the 5-day private jungle tour, advised me (group or private) and answered all my questions. I didn't have to do anything. - Small kitchen with good food in a beautiful location by a small pond. - Drinking water available - Female manager went on a short hike with me on the first day. - Female manager speaks good English and can organize a private taxi to Medan. - Breakfast at 5:30 a.m. is possible if you ordered a private taxi to Medan at 6 a.m. - Good 5-day private jungle tour If you want to do something that will stay in your memory for the rest of your life, you should do the jungle tour. The longer the better, but exhausting. On the 2nd, 3rd and 4th day I didn't see any other tourists. If you are not a 25 year old strong young man, I recommend the private jungle tour. Then you can go at your own pace and don't have to adjust to others about speed, route or breaks. - Good food on the jungle tour, I didn't get any stomach problems. - Friendly guide and 2 friendly guide assistants - Guide spoke good English. - You should bring: Waterproof shoes if you are doing it for more than 3 days. You can buy them up to size 42 in Bukit Lawang. I walked along the river for 2 days with my sturdy flip-flops. Most importantly: You should walk with 2 sticks. The guide gave me 2 bamboo sticks. Without these sticks I would have fallen in the river several times a day (very slippery stones, strong current). Rain poncho, which the guide can buy for you in Bukit Lawang. Sun hat Closed shoes: sneakers or hiking boots Thin long pants (no heavy, tight and thick blue jeans) Any medication you might need (diarrhea, antibiotics for infected wounds, insect repellent, paracetamol, Micropur Forte for drinking water to be on the safe side, ...
- Problem with a guide assistant on the first night One of the two guide assistants (smoker) had been coughing the whole first night so I couldn't sleep. The next morning, I was pretty upset. The following nights this guide assistant didn't sleep near me anymore and I could sleep well. If there hadn't been a problem with the coughing guide assistant on the first night, I would have given a rating of 10. - No shop nearby where you can buy something. - One night there was no WiFi, another day it was terribly slow. But luckily, I had an Indonesian SIM card for my tablet PC (hotspot) so this wasn't a problem for me.

5 stars is not enough to rate our experience! We had a really great time at Magpie homestay. The accomodation is pretty, comfortable, clean, and surrounded by a very beautiful and private tropical garden. The host will cater to your every need, from transportation to local activities and offers delicious homemade meals. We also booked a day-long trek with them and it was perfect, the guide and his assistant did everything they could for us to have the best experience in the forest (and we did!). If you want to discover a bit more the tourist part of the village you will have to walk a little to reach it (or use a tuktuk), the path is easy to follow and you'll be able to get a good view of the area. The entrance of the park is a short walk from Magpie.
Nothing
We have been travelling through Asia for 5 months and this was our favourite place. The owner Asniar is such a nice person and a superb cook. Anything we asked for she could help us with. Our kids helped her with cooking and she also took the time to bake a cake with them. We liked it so much, we decided come back a week later and stay there again for 5 nights. I would highly recommend.
The area looks like a botanical garden or park: many trees, flowers, plants, a small lake. I had at my disposal a house with a private cooking area, a shower/toilet, a large room and a bedroom. The kitchen had the necessary utensils and a gas stove. The rooms have a wardrobe, a table, a coffee table, a sofa and two beds. There was a lot of space for me. There was also a table outside the house in front of the entrance. The hosts are very friendly and helped with many of my questions regarding the organization of my trip. While I lived there I ordered breakfast, lunch, tea, coffee there. In my opinion, this is a great place to stay, one of the best places I have ever lived while traveling.
This is a MUST STAY if you come to Bukit Lawang, especially if you’re here long term! I stayed here for two weeks (WITH A ONE YEAR OLD BABY) and these are the things I love about this place! : 1. This has been the most comfortable stay I’ve had in my many years of travelling. Room is cleaned very often, laundry room (fully equipped up to detergent) is available at all times, cooking facilities is clean and equipped, food made freshly and upon request and delivered to room (if required)… it’s much better than home! Haha 2. The owner is a very lovely lady who has travelled and worked abroad quite a bit, so she is very understanding about the needs and requirement of her guests. I came here with a friend with a baby. Our mealtimes and food (Very delicious by the way) requests were sometimes different but she managed to cater to us with a smile always. Even my baby loves her food! She always took an extra step to care for us. Whenever we mentioned something wrong with our health, she would immediately suggest or bring some medicine. Very important ; She NEVER forced or pushed us to take any touristy trip from her, not even trekking. She was also VERY HONEST about how things are done here, and suggested various other cafes or accommodations when requested. She didn’t sell her place or activity and she made us feel so free - truly like a family member who just wanted us to have a good time - something you rarely find when travelling to touristy areas. 3. The location is right in the middle of the village. My one year old always has something to do here. Everyday we see geese, cows, birds, squirrels and other animals within walking distance to this accomodation. There are a few fish ponds and we’re allowed to feed the fishes as well. The house is set in the midst of a garden, so our view from the window is always green and you hear and see birds chirping All the time. The river is also within walking distance and you have a few choices to go to.
Nothing
The host is an amazing cook and offers delicious breakfast to order and other meals for purchase. The grounds are beautiful, and it was helpful to have cooking facilities and a washing machine.
Some might find the distance from town inconvenient, but it makes for better scenery and is not a problem if you like to walk.
Magpie Homestay was a wonderful accommodation for visiting Bukit Lawang. The host was exceptionally kind and caring. She prioritized our comfort and enjoyment. The food offered at the Homestay was very good. They also offer orangutang trekking, rafting, and other fun activities. Overall we highly recommend Magpie Homestay if you are looking for a local accommodation that is comfortable and a great value.
