Road access v poor
We love the location. Such beautiful gardens & stunning views. Bathroom nice & newly modernised. The staff were really obliging as we got lost & arrived after the last orders for meals but they made allowances & still fed us! Good food & large dining area & a courtyard where you can eat outside on a nice evening.
Decor a little dated but adds to the character!
Pleasant country home. slightly faded.
Single track road was awkward.
Great breakfast. Wonderful location though remote. Beautiful views.
The drive is hard on the car.Room rather warm and difficult to open the window.
Lovely old building lovely gardens
The road in is awful with big holes in the road No staff available , we couldn't get the tv to work and no one was about , we phoned reception and never got an answer , we did even leave a message but no one ever helped so we never used it unfortunately
Cooked Breakfast was excellent.
Nothing
The location is stunning, everywhere was clean, quiet but very receptive to dogs. Everyone was very welcoming and accommodating, food was plentiful and nicely cooked. The bedroom was a good size and very clean. There was no rush!
minor crit., shower over bath is not ideal for some older folk and has more hazards than walk-in. Some furniture and fittings in need of upgrade

Breakfast was quite good - would have liked wider range on the buffet. The countryside views were lovely. The king size room was spacious with a good sized shower room. Dinner menus were good value.
Wasn’t keen on the number of dogs staying, especially that they were allowed in the restaurant. Bar prices were a bit high.
A fabulous old building with a lot history of history. Some might say it needs modernising but then it would lose its charm. Cracking views from the lawn, especially on a warm summer evening
Potholes on the Driveway are pretty bad
Beautiful surroundings - excellent service - amazing food! We've stayed a few times & it is always a pleasure.
Nothing
The room was beautiful & spacious with spectacular views .The bathroom was superb with well stocked toiletries.
Very disappointed with our evening meal..We were certain it had been heated up in the microwave & not freshly prepared, There were no specials to chose from and we felt that maybe they were having difficulties obtaining a chef.....however on a good note we were very pleased with the breakfast.
Sehr schöne und ruhige Lage mit tollem Ausblick. Sehr nettes Personal.
.
beautiful outlook
Entrance rd needs resurfacing badly. A smell in room No 5
Clean well maintained. Good value.
Approach road a bit bumpy🙃
We’ve stayed at this hotel a number of times. We know the staff and location very well and always feel like we arrive back home. Hotel has the most amazing views and in the summer the garden is gorgeous
It might not be the most luxurious of hotels but it’s clean and friendly
Lovely breakfast/Location/Food.

Breakfast was excellent, cooked to order. Setting was outstanding, panoramic views and silence - a proper country hotel. Staff welcoming.
Some decor was a little tired (but historic building) and bathroom shower, though clean, needed attention, eg regrouting, removal of some discolouration.
The grounds
The staff were lovely but so under staffed. Food was not good, 7 people for dinner and only two ate a full meal.
Staff very good and very helpful, went out of their way in everything. Food was great, The Steak was wonderful. and my Salmon dish was delicious.
For me, the corridors upstairs were a little tired and needed cheering up. Our room was of good size and perfectly acceptable. The garden was lovely, but the furniture also needed some cushions.
Beautiful location once we arrived. Check in very good.
The road into the hotel is horrendous with potholes. Severely understaffed. Food was poor and service very slow.
Staff very friendly.
Hotel was very tired
Its location.
Confusing policy where dogs can go
The hotel is in a beautiful peaceful location with exceptional views across the open countryside and has a lovely garden with plenty of seating. The meal I had was excellent. All the staff were very friendly and helpful.
Be aware that this property doesn’t have a lift. The accommodation is good although the decor is now looking very tired.
Beautiful setting and really lovely friendly helpful Staff
The room was really hot however they did supply a fan
Fantastische ervaring! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Ikzelf heb niks aan te merken.
Lovely setting
The grounds and the staff were amazing.
The rooms were not value for money as we did not get what we asked for. The wallpaper was hanging off the walls. There were dust everywhere in the room..
Location super - very relaxing Staff great especially Harry. Food very good Room very comfortable
A little nerve racking driving to the Hotel which is quite isolated. Shower cubicle could do with upgrading in room 9
Staff very obliging and helpful. The garden was well maintained although the drive could do with the bushes being cut back. Fascinating history and lovely garden and outlook.
It seemed understaffed with one person waiting on tables and working behind the bar and still smiling!! The place had an air of ruin about it and had a Fawlty Towers vibe. We heard from a local that it had been a lovely venue in the past. We couldn't get the shower to work but was told that it worked fine - there seemed to be a bit missing on the lever and no instructions.
gastvrije ontvangst, mooi gelegen, lekker eten en hondvriendelijke locatie
iets verouderd gebouw maar heel netjes
All good quality food and service. Hot weather, no aircon so uncomfortable at times. Fan supplied (very dusty) Staff wonderful.
Nothing
Very friendly staff
Rooms need bigger fans carpets need replacing
The staff we very helpful and friendly. We had a lovely dinner which was reasonably priced, good quality and generous portions. The hotel is in a lovely location and is a short drive to Exeter.
nothing, but future guests may wish to note that the rooms do not have AC (but there was a fan in the room)
Set in Beautiful surrounds
Outside temperatures were 30 degrees, they did provide fans but the rooms were extremely hot. A lot of stairs, no lift or help offered with cases. Hotel needs need a little TLC, redecorating, new matress on bed
Does it's job. Clean sheets. Clean toilet. Sufficient parking. Staff were good.
It was 30°C and the windows will only open slightly. It was very hot and stuffy. We took two rooms. One room had a fan that didn't work well. They could not replace it with a better one
Peaceful, picturesque location
Room really hot and very noisy day and night. Couldn't have the window open because of the noise. Only 1 small fan provided for 2 beds, they were unable to provide another despite saying they could in the guest information directory. Would not change room either. Unhelpful staff. My daughter ended up sleeping on the bathroom floor, as it was marginally cooler!
Peaceful
No air conditioning ,had fans but blowing hot air out
Friendly helpful staff
Old fashioned restaurant with pub menu. Dated and worn bathroom
friendly staff great location
The drive way into hotel could have pot holes sorted out
Nice and friendly
A little out of town
Good value traditional hotel
Nothing
Staff helpful and friendly
Difficult to get to
The location is absolutely stunning and the staff very friendly
Very hot weather. Fan in the room was not effective at cooling the room.
Staff very helpful and friendly, nice location. Evening meal was fine. Comfy bed , good bathroom . .
Road leading to the hotel could do with a bit of repair.
Views.
Getting there and terrible drive surface.
Short stay only bed and breakfast but one of the best places I've stayed ever. The photos on here dont to the place justice, it amazing with views to match
Friendly and helpful staff. actually, they couldn't have been more helpful - lovely people.
Sunday morning really awful with hotel overrun by massive church group. Car parking nightmare - they had blocked us in and we couldn't leave for 25 minutes. Made us late for our next event. Some apologies from them but really not a good experience. Hotel drive had lots of holes - lucky we weren't in a Ferrari.
Stunning location, absolutely beautiful building and setting. Staff were very friendly and manager was a star ,going above and beyond. Will definitely be back .Very satisfied only wished we had longer ,very clean and tidy .
I liked the grounds very much to walk in and meditate in and do Tai Chi, thank you.
I don’t like Tetley’s tea thank you so I didn’t drink the tea on offer in the room just had a few glasses of water from the bathroom tap. And the downstairs gentleman’s loo was out of order when I arrived, I used the disabled loo and the lock wasn’t working I think.
Surprisingly charming hotel deep in the Devon countryside. It is tucked away and many locals don't know about it. Travel via Ide, and lunch at the Huntsman a real country pub. Very big room and full bathroom. The hotel has a lovely garden, huge old trees and big views across the Devonshire countryside. Helpful staff. Although it is 'dog friendly', dogs are not allowed in the restaurant and can only be in certain guest rooms and there were none during our short visit. This would be a good base for a longer trip - affordable, easy access to Exeter and surrounding areas. Breakfast had a wide variety on offer. Attentive staff.
It is an historic building so no lift, which was difficult with injured foot at the time.
Rust
Route er naar toe
The building was lovely. It was in a very scenic, rural area.
I was disappointed between the difference of the two rooms I booked as I could not book two rooms the same. The standard room was very dated (and felt a bit unloved) and not nearly as well finished off as the other room. The hotel was incredibly hot (and yes it was during the extreme heat wave).
Beautiful location and large room
No air con room was stifling hot, I had to go out and sleep on the lawn for part of the night. It was unbearable.
Perfect.
Location- beautiful Friendly staff
Tv didn’t work and shower was poor
Lovely big rooms, beautiful views, friendly staff. Fans provided which was an added bonus in the current heat.
The drive to the hotel is through narrow country lanes with large hills and hidden bends... not easy when pitch black, wish I'd researched the area a little more before booking.
Staff breakfast and room Was brilliant
Unique local feel and beautiful surroundings.
Quite difficult to get there due to the narrow and dated road, also we stayed there during the summer heat wave, it was quite challenging as one small fan per room didn’t help.
Very old and characterful Out in the country
Rather faded around the edges Looked like it needed a bit more tlc
Belle chambre
Restauration pas très professionnelle
A lovely building in gorgeous gardens.
We had told the hotel we were arrivi g after 10pm. The Sat Nav suggested road was closed and looked like this had been the case for sometime. Where the road was closed, the Sat Nav said 500m to the hotel and there were 3 cars parked on the small rural road. It took us a further 30 mins to navigate the small Devon lanes Why did the hotel not warn us?
Location was very good for the places we wanted to visit. Lovely grounds.
Access to the property was down a narrow badly potholed lane, but that did not spoil our stay.
Location and views were good. Ample parking. Breakfast was good, plenty of options - my wife had salmon I had kippers, should have been served with toast, not a problem in doing our own but shows lack of care. Bed was comfortable and room was big.
Very poor road leading into the hotel, looks like a private road or at least the hotel owners can put pressure on to rebuild. Needs some money spent on the interior too - cleaning the carpets leading to the rooms won't be enough.
Staff was friendly.
Struggling with taking luggage up 3 flights of stairs, the room was hot and the fan was noisy and needs replacing. The food was burnt overcooked and did mention this but nothing was said or done. £30.00 for burnt fish and chips
Paul and Val were charming and thoughtful hosts who made my stay extremely pleasant. The hotel is in a beautiful location with well-kept grounds. Good value for money compared with Exeter town centre accommodation.
The hotel is clearly in need of a refurb. Decor and fixtures are showing their age.
First appearances very positive. Heating in room was off. However, room was hot and stuffy, with limited ventilation from window which had to be covered with blind as night-time illumination of external quad meant room was floodlight led to very sleepless uncomfortable night. Room itself in need of attention as holes in wall by headboard and dirty windows. Organised evening meal for just after 8pm left in in bar where we ordered a light snack of sandwiches in the presence of two members of staff. Along with ourselves there were three other couples waiting to be settled in restaurant. After 50 minutes, we were the only ones left waiting when we were informed our food order had been lost, by which time it was too late for my wife to eat. We were informed it would only take a matter of minutes to prepare, but having waited so long we declined and went to bed hungry. At the much anticipated breakfast, my wife ordered salmon and scrambled egg on toast from the menu. Salmon and egg appeared, and when questioned were informed we had to make our own toast which my wife proceeded to do, by which time the scrambled egg was cold. So, in all conscience we can only award one star.
Location
No lift . Very poor approach roads narrow with many deep potholes. Facilities generally dated.
Mooie locatie, prettig personeel.
Everything
A little off the beaten track!
Wonderful staff, beautiful location and superb room. We didn’t eat in the restaurant so can’t comment about that.
The small lanes to get there 😂.
The gardens were the best part of the stay.
The food was awful, the interior of the hotel was poor and the rooms were in need of a refurb. The carpet in the corridor to the hotel was disgusting and smelt so bad of dogs. This is a dog friendly hotel and we had dogs but I have never experienced such a bad smell of dogs in a hotel.
Excellent property and location and staff are amazing 🤩 so nice and helpful very professional a big thankyou to all
Great staff. Lots of variety.
The shower still had previous guests hair on the wall. Water took ages to warm up so basically had a Luke warm Shower.
Dinner was fair, the garlic bread did not really taste of garlic.
Other guests finished dinner and left, however when we finished I asked if I needed to sign anything or do they just put it on our room bill, Earlier having a drink in the bar I just signed for them and it was put on the room bill. The reply was I'll just check, then he said No you will have to pay now, which I found strange as no one else had paid. I have stayed in many hotels and drinks / food were always put on my room bill which would be paid when I left. Our room was terrible, there was no air-con and the heat was at times unbearable, even with the window wide open, the view from the window was of two large oil tanks which are in an enclosed court yard. The building exterior inside the court yard, was in a very poor state with ivy climbing up drain pipes up to the roof. The curtains had missing rings holding them up. The net curtain was obviously old and at least four inches too short. In the bathroom the toilet roll holder is literally on the wall behind you and level with the bottom of the cistern, so the only place to leave the toilet roll was on the floor. The toilet seat was loose so you had to be careful not to fall off. The wash basin was really small, and the plug was useless. I filled the sink to have a shave and by the time I had applied shaving cream the sink was completely empty! I had to leave the tap running while shaving. The extractor in the bathroom did not work, and there was no window. If I was running the hotel I would never have put a guest in that room! The public areas were fine and looked as the photos on the website, however the room was nothing like the photos, It is in real need of updating, we were glad to leave!
Clean quiet comfortable Wonderful staff Great food - breakdast & dinner Nice big room and bath Really out in the country
No A/C during a very hot spell, not even an offered fan.
Beautiful surroundings Friendly helpful staff Very clean
Room was too hot and fan was too small for room
We received a warm welcome on our arrival at this lovely country hotel situated in pleasant garden parkland. The access road was severely pot-holed and one had to take care. Our room was a superior King room and after climbing some 40 steps we were pleased to find a large bedroom with fine views over the garden. The bed was comfortable a sofa plus two tub chairs allowed for relaxation. The bathroom was astounding, clearly recently remodelled with ceramic tiles the considerable space allowed for a feature bath, toilet, shower and sink. Unfortunately, the design took preference over practicality, the water pressure was insufficient to provide a hot bath without waiting for almost a ¾ an hour and the fantastic shower did not deliver more than a sprinkle. There were no toiletries which had to be requested. Breakfast was very good and well cooked, plenty of choice of pastries, juices and fruit. Coffee from the machine was not to my taste but acceptable none-the less. The evening menu left much to be desired with quite an ordinary menu requiring little cullinary skill. The hotel offers an EV charge point which is a strong feature unfortunately it was a three pin plug point version and I only had the wrong cable!
Poor water pressure spoiled the effect of the bath and shower both of which were of very good quality. Some closer attention to detail regarding provision of toiletries and rooms should be made up (refreshed) daily without having to request such from reception. Also the evening dinner menu needs to be reviewed as both selection and quality left much to be desired
Excellent location for us to break the journey from Cornwall back home. The staff were lovely, plenty of parking space and the grounds were extensive. It was dog friendly and the food was great. Great value for money as we only had the basic rooms.
