Reviewed Sep 17, 2026Staff absolutely lovely and the place has a really cool vibe to it. We loved the most that not all backpackers are 18-21 but also lots of mature travelers. The tours that you can book at reception are really cool, it's a great place to meet other people, and they have a fair price. On top of that the WiFi is very good and there's AC. The volunteers on site also to a fantastic job in making the stay memorable for everyone.
The in-house restaurant is not the best. It's not bad but also not great. However, that's no issue since there are 2 good restaurants just opposite the street. The bar is really good though. It's best to rent a scooter to get around (which we didn't), since waking to the beach is 30 mins and slightly highly. Also be sure to bring plenty of cash to Cat Ba or have VietQR. There's no non-scam ATMs on the island + card payments at the hostel come with 5% card fee. Best so search a VPBank ATM in a city before. The cleanliness is okay in general. Unfortunately, on two occassions, we had a cockroach in the room - presumably out of the shower drain. Management should definitely look into this! Also if it's unavoidable to some extent in this tropical climate..

De bouwvakkers en jammer dat er geen gordijnen voor het raam in de deur zitten, geeft toch veel licht in de ochtend.

Reviewed Sep 8, 2026Really nice atmosphere, especially in the evenings. The staff were friendly and helpful, the location was good, and the whole place had a relaxed and friendly vibe. It was a nice place to chill and meet other travellers.
The place looks a bit better in the photos than it does in real life and could definitely do with a little refresh. The pool didn’t look very inviting either. Apart from that, nothing major to complain about.

La piscina tenía un color muy muy turbio, no parece que la limpien muy a menudo.

Reviewed Aug 15, 2026Hôtel bien situé dans une rue vivante avec de nombreux bars et petits commerces. Ambiance et décoration très agréable. 15 minutes à pied de CAT BA BEACH ou du port de BAN BEO pour aller au village flottant des pêcheurs et autres visites en bateau. La chambre est fonctionnelle et propre, un bémol sur la literie qui est assez dure. Le petit balcon est un plus. Serviettes de toilette changées tous les jours. Très calme la nuit. Les jeunes à l'accueil sont très sympas et de bon conseil pour découvrir l'île. Même remarque sur la sympathie pour l'ensemble du personnel qui est souriant et bienveillant. Le petit déjeuner est léger mais bon.
La piscine verte, inutisable, quel dommage. L’état de la salle de bain est très dégradé (odeur, insectes...) De plus la douche est située au même niveau que les WC, sans séparation ni dispositif permettant de contenir l’eau. Après chaque douche, une grande quantité d’eau se répand ainsi sur l’ensemble de la salle de bains, rendant rapidement le sol très glissant et augmentant considérablement le risque de chute. Mettre une raclette pour le sol serait une bonne idée pour commencer.

Reviewed Aug 9, 2026⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Secret Garden Hostel in Cat Ba was easily one of the highlights of my time in Vietnam. The atmosphere, the staff, the other travellers and the overall vibe made it feel like so much more than just a place to stay. I loved it so much that I ended up volunteering there as a bartender for two weeks — which probably says everything! 😂 It was honestly one of the best decisions I made on my trip. I met some amazing people, had some unforgettable nights and felt genuinely part of the hostel community. If you’re travelling through Cat Ba, I couldn’t recommend Secret Garden enough. Whether you’re staying for a couple of nights or, like me, accidentally end up staying much longer than planned, you’ll have an amazing time. Thank you to everyone at Secret Garden for making my time in Cat Ba so special. ❤️

Eventually I stayed one more night in a dorm room, which was also comfortable and clean :) They organise a pub quiz night and karaoke night, both very enjoyable, loads of fun. Employees were friendly and helpful, always so polite. The place is cozy with different lounge places, the bathrooms and showers are clean and location is walking distance to the centre. Highly recommend staying here. Booked the boat tour to Ha Long Bay with the hostel as well, was well organized with pick up + drop off at the hostel.

Tienen restaurante ahí mismo, desayuno incluido y clases varias como yoga y otras actividades, karaoke por las noches y mesa de billar. La vibra de la gente es muy buena onda, se puede conocer gente rápidamente y también ofrecen tours. Las camas son cómodas y las habitaciones están limpias y frescas.
La piscina es más pequeña de lo pensado y no estaba limpia.

La habitación individual no tenía ventana, tenía muchísima humedad, la llave iba muy mal y estaba en un edificio adyacente al hotel sin vigilancia, daba miedo. A parte, la piscina estaba permanentemente cerrada. Para terminar había un dinamizador de la zona común, un chico occidental mayor que era muy empalagoso con las chicas jóvenes. Era muy desagradable y nunca había tranquilidad en el "jardín". Jastan en el desayuno estaba por allí molestando. Finalmente decidí irme un día antes y he encontrado un hostal compartiendo habitación mil veces mejor, y con piscina!!! (Hay que decir, que sin yo pedirlo me devolvieron el dinero de la habitación de un día)

Reviewed Jul 16, 2026Auberge peu cher, chambre assez grande, petit déjeuner sympa. Il y a différentes animations tous les soirs, ce qui est vraiment sympa, il y en a pour tous les goûts. Sympa pour rencontrer des gens. Le restaurant de l’auberge est très bon et il y a également un bar.
Le ménage pourrait être fait de manière plus approfondie, notamment dans les salles de bain et le sol du dortoir. La piscine est verte de saleté et ne donne malheureusement pas trop envie de se baigner. Ça mériterait un bon nettoyage.

Ce sont des détails : une paroi de douche permettrait de ne pas salir la salle de bains, les transats de la piscine sont cassés, ils pourraient être remplacés.

They played exclusively AI music in the morning and evening—— strangely, it was AI generated Christian worship music…? Find a better playlist than this please

Personnel non serviable. J’ai été malade et ils ne m’ont pas aidé à ce sujet ! Les chambres sont au dessus des espaces communs, et ne sont pas bien isolées. On entend le karaoké dans notre chambre comme si on y était jusqu’à 23h !

Vì là phòng ktx nên sẽ ko thoải mái như phòng riêng rồi, nhưng bạn cùng phòng lịch sự, giữ trật tự. Có cái cửa ra vào lúc đóng hay gây ra tiếng ồn.
